four smart steps to avoid the flu Brought to you by Tennova Medical Group Flu season can create anxiety for individuals who are vulnerable to serious complications. As with any illness, it’s important to learn and follow steps that can protect you and your loved ones from contracting the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists four important steps to reduce your risk of infection: • Wash your hands consistently throughout the day. Hand washing is still one of the most effective and easiest ways to prevent infection. • Keep your hands away from your face. Microscopic germs find their way into our bodies most often through hand-to-eye, nose or mouth contact. Door knob and handles, office coffee pots and grocery cart handles can all carry the virus. • Stay away from sick people. Individuals can still be contagious for 24 hours after a fever and other symptoms cease. 6
• Get vaccinated. Even when a vaccine is not a perfect match for a flu strain it still benefits the recipient by decreasing the intensity and duration of the illness and preventing complications. If you do become ill and suspect the flu virus, see your doctor right away. You may receive a prescription for an antiviral medication which can lesson flu symptoms and help you recover faster. This is a critically-important step for those who are at higher risk for flu complications, such as young children, adults age 65-plus, and those with lung disease and compromised immune systems. When you’re ill, you can help stop the spread of viruses by staying home, except for medical care visits, until you have been fever- and symptom-free for 24 hours. Protect others from your sneezes and coughs by turning away from people and bringing your sleeved arm up to sneeze or cough into your elbow. Clarksville Living
Unlike a cold, the flu typically comes on suddenly. It is a contagious respiratory virus adults may unknowingly spread before experiencing symptoms. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu symptoms include fever or feeling feverish/chills (although not everyone with flu will have a fever); cough; sore throat; runny or stuffy nose; muscle or body aches; headaches; fatigue; and vomiting and diarrhea, which are more common in children. If you do become ill this flu season, Tennova Medical Group is here to help. Our family practice office located on Tiny Town Road welcomes new patients of all ages. The D Word: Understanding dyslexia
C
larksville Mayor Joe Pitts recently invited CMCSS's newly appointed Dyslexia Reading Interventionist Sarah McAfee, along with advocates Lori and Ryann Smith, and other families dealing with the disability, to his office for a special proclamation. McAfee began the conversation: “The biggest frustration for these families was not knowing where to go, what to do, or who to talk to. They needed specialized intervention. They also had to convince people that this is not a behavioral problem, but a learning disability. 20% of Americans are affected by Dyslexia.”
to create legislation that addressed the problem. “Our Say Dyslexia bill did three things,” Mayor Pitts said. “The Dyslexia Advisory Council made of professionals, parents and others was formed. A Screening Process for students was created. And, Professional Development was provided to train teachers and educators.” McAfee, a Behavior Consultant, with CMCSS for about six years, became the district's first Dyslexia Reading Interventionist.
For several minutes Mayor Pitts interacted with the students and parents who filled the conference room at his office. He then read a proclamation, naming October 15, 2019 Dyslexia Awareness Day. “Four years ago, Lori approached me about her daughter Ryann, the struggles she was having, and how the state education system was not working for students who exhibited characteristics of Dyslexia,” Mayor Pitts said. “I was shocked to find that one in five are affected by this in some way, and that it can affect students in so many different ways.” Mayor Pitts was a State Representative when he first met Lori and Ryann. They worked together

“I'm now working with kids K – 12,” McAfee said. “About 20% of all students are affected by Dyslexia. Sadly, many are never identified. Identification is the hardest part. These students can slip through the cracks, they're smart, and they've learned to compensate. For response intervention they have to fall below the 25th percentile, and many don't.” McAfee says, it's usually not the teachers who notice the problem. “It generally starts with the parents,” McAfee
said. “They start reading to their kids at home when they're little, and often see problems with letter identification, sound symbol knowledge, and their ability to say the alphabet and remember what a letter 'says'. When they go to school, educators sometimes think, 'well, this may be developmental, they'll catch up'. Sometimes, students don't like reading, because of the difficulty, then it can become a behavior problem, as they might shy away from reading, or act up.”
wait-list for testing, but by now she was half-way through 3rd grade. It took us two years to figure out what was going on.” Smith did a lot of research, it was suggested that she hire an advocate, but she declined. “I said no, that's not necessary, we're in a wonderful school district. This won't be a problem,” Smith said. “But, I realized our district didn't have a strategy. To be fair, no district in Tennessee, or really in the nation, had a strategy
for dealing with Dyslexia. “I talked to the CMCSS leadership at the time. I laid out the research, and how early intervention is key. I didn't get the response I was hoping for. So, I called our State Representative, Joe Pitts, and said, I need to tell you what's going on.” Smith shared information with Representative Pitts about Arkansas and Louisiana and other states beginning to require screening and
Teachers sometimes initiate, but usually parents have to say they want their child screened. Thanks to the Say Dyslexia law, students can now be screened within the school building. The diagnosis still takes place outside the school. McAfee says some cases are mild, others are quite severe. In severe cases, students may see the letters swirling or jumping around on the page. She says about 2% of Dyslexia sufferers actually have Alexia making it almost impossible for them to learn to read. Lori Smith is the local parent and advocate who, with her daughter Ryann, was able to work with Representative Pitts and create the Say Dyslexia law. “When Ryann was in 1st grade, she got all A's for her 1st nine weeks,” Smith said. “After that, suddenly, she was struggling. I found out that at first the teachers were reading the tests, then the students were required to read them on their own. “Ryann would bring her tests home. When I asked her the questions, she could answer them without any help. While reading with her, I noticed that she recognized some words but not others. The school said, 'it's just an adjustment period. She needs some time and she'll figure it out'. That didn't happen. This was about an 18 month process, trying to understand why she was struggling. We finally took her for private testing, and that's when we got the Dyslexia diagnosis.”

Smith describes her daughter as 'smart and insightful'. “But, she couldn't read,” Smith said. “It was bizarre. I thought maybe it was her hearing. is something called the school-to-prison pipeline. Graduating kids who can't read, end up in prison. We need to invest on the front end, or we'll certainly pay for it on the back end.”
“Getting someone like Sarah trained is expensive,” Smith said. “But, 80 % of students is juvenile detention centers are illiterate. The majority of them have a reading disability. There

Individuals in prison who learn to read are 80% less likely to go back to prison. We really do have a literacy crisis.” Smith praised CMCSS, Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Sean Impeartrice. “Our CAO recognizes this problem,” Smith said. “He is amazing. He created the position that Sarah is in. I believe he has a vision to ensure that we help all the students in this district. It's a process. There are teachers who would argue that Dyslexia does not exist. This year we are working on legislation that would require colleges to teach this subject to graduating teachers. “Our district is absolutely moving in the right direction. We need Sarah to design and implement a district-wide program to help train teachers, and get support in place for the students. And, I would share this. We are very blessed. Ryann was always going to have a great future, because we have the money to pay for someone like Sarah to tutor her. But, think about kids whose parents can't advocate on their behalf. In fairness, I still advocate on her behalf, probably weekly. That's not a criticism, just me being an active parent. How do we help the kids who don't have that support in their lives?”

McAfee and Smith say, students with Dyslexia will say things like 'I'm done. I can't do that. I'm not as smart as other kids'. They need someone in their lives who will say, 'no, you have Dyslexia, it's a challenge that you can overcome'. “The overwhelming majority of Dyslexia students are considered average to gifted,”
Smith said. “It's common to be double gifted. She and Ryann cite Stephen Spielberg, and 3 of the 5 sharks on Shark Tank. “We just have to put the right interventions in place. The earlier they are screened the better the results. “Early diagnosis is key. Kids diagnosed in 1st grade can be on level by 3rd grade. Kids diagnosed in 4th grade will take four times the amount of time and resources to catch up. Sadly, some kids aren't diagnosed until high school. In the beginning, if you asked Ryann to spell people, she would say 'p e p l', that's what she heard. Even now, she sometimes mix up her “b and “d. She just doesn't hear the sound.
NOW
for the HOLIDAYS!
Ryann says she would automatically shut down before Sarah came along. “I would know I had to read, and just say, well, okay, I'm dumb. theb and “d are really confusing. I can visualize it more if I can read out loud to someone I'm comfortable with, or if someone reads it to me. “You say “truck, and some kids will hear “ch, they don't hear the “tr sound, that's a common problem, McAfee explains. “Ryann writes the way she hears. We have to go back and say, for example, “consideration. You know the word, you have to talk your way through it.

“It's frustrating, Smith said. “You do the research, you know what the problem is, but you don't have the ability to heal them, and in our case, even the schools didn't have the tools and resources. I can't explain the despair of wanting so desperately to help your child read, but not knowing how. Then, the relief when you find Sarah, and she says, 'this is what we're going to do.' “Kids were picking on Ryann. She didn't want to go to school. We felt like we were losing her, and we didn't know if we would be able to get her back. That's when we found Sarah, and saw the immediate change in Ryann, in her confidence level. We are forever indebted to Sarah. Ryann started to see that she could learn the way Sarah was teaching her. She wants to say to her teachers now, 'if you guys could teach me the way I learn, then all will be good.

Providing Security Through Blankets
it's sew easy to help! By Taylor Lieberstein Since 1995, Project Linus has been a non-profit, national organization with a two-fold mission: To provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, created by volunteers they call "blanketeers".
As the Clarksville Montgomery County community grows so does the demand for blankets. The local chapter is calling on members of the community to help meet that demand. Most children receive a Project Linus blanket through a local hospital, shelter, or other agency. If you know a child in crisis who will not likely get a Project Linus blanket from one of these facilities, you can reach out to the organization. It has always been the mission of Project Linus to donate only handmade blankets. When Project 18
Linus says “handmade” they mean something that is not commercially manufactured or purchased. Of course, home sewing machines and knitting machines are fine. They receive thousands of letters and thank you notes every year from children. Over and over they express how touched they are that a stranger would take the
time to make something for them. They really know the difference. Purchased blankets are nice, but handmade blankets are from the heart.
contribute to their community by providing more blankets to distribute to needy children. No previous blanket-making experience is required, if you can cut a piece of fabric you can be of service to the organization. If you wish to make a blanket outside of the group and donate it to the chapter that is equally as helpful. There are many expenses involved in maintaining Project Linus. Normal expenses for the organization are fabric, batting, yarn, blanket labels, printing, office supplies and shipping to name a few. Doing something that results in meaningful work makes people happy, scientific fact. One study found out that when quilters view their finished product, their brains get saturated with the happy chemicals called dopamine and serotonin. This sense of accomplishment also decreases the stress and anxiety chemicals in the

Friendships and community are essential for keeping us connected and healthy. This has become increasingly challenging with today's sprawling suburbs which tend to distance us from each other and make casual get togethers rare. The problem is further exacerbated by the isolating effects of modern technology that can keep people in their own little digital worlds or at best only connected electronically to acquaintances who remain unseen and unmet in person. november is adopt a senior pet month By Christina Chittenden
The holidays are here and Fall is in the air. Everyone is rushing around to make their plans for family gatherings and visiting friends and families. Unfortunately, this can also be a very difficult time for many. This is especially true for our seniors. Our society has become so self-consumed with their own personal lives, they often forget about those that need us most, our seniors. This holds true for our
22
senior animals as well. November is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Month and Adopt a Senior Pet Month. Our county is now working harder than ever to become a “No Kill” community.
Clarksville Living
Unfortunately, this important decision does not come without consequences. Our shelters are now overwhelmed with stray, homeless and dumped animals. It seems the mindset of many in our society is “animals are disposable, an inconvenience, a burden”. Please understand that, when adopting an animal, they are a lifetime commitment. We as a community can reduce these numbers by becoming more responsible pet owners through education, spaying and neutering, never leaving your pet unattended and following our county ordinances set forth. When faced with re-homing your animals, take the necessary steps and precautions to ensure the safety of your pet’s future.
The local animal shelters work extremely hard helping those that need us most – our seniors and homeless pets. They continue to go that extra mile to assure the family that found will be a loving home for the new pet. Shelters provide peace of mind, reassurance and comfort to the seniors and families of pet owners that are faced with the difficult decision of rehoming. Many seniors in our community face the difficult decisions to find homes for their fur babies. They face health issues, are placed in assisted living facilities or, even worse, death. Both the pets and senior citizens are completely devastated. Often, families do not want to take on the responsibility of the pet or can’t due to their own personal issues. If you are a senior and you own a pet, please make the necessary arrangements to ensure your pet will be placed in a loving home with a friend or family member when needed. If you need assistance, please reach out to a reputable organization like the
Humane Society of Clarksville-Montgomery County, who will ensure that your pet will be placed in a loving home. Please visit the Humane Society of Clarksville-Montgomery County and opt to adopt. When choosing that perfect dog or cat, consider your lifestyle, what best suits your family and home. When you’re ready to adopt, consider a senior fur baby. Unlike puppies, they are well passed the destructive phase, most are housebroken, easily trained, loyal and give unconditional love. They promise to love you unconditionally, will you?
