Publisher’s Message I started this magazine back in 2007 when I wasn’t able to find a job that utilized my graphic design skills. My son wasn’t quite three years old. Fast forward to 2019 and he’s 15 years old, and he will be driving soon! It seems as if he went from baby, to little guy, to this big ol’ tall thing before I’ve barely had time to blink! Of course, I am extremely proud and excited for him, but it’s still shocking at how fast time zips by. I’m sure you all can relate to this with your little ones. Well, regardless of what the calendar says, summer is officially here! It feels like in Tennessee, Mother Nature gives us five months of summer, five months of winter and one month of spring and fall. And sometimes we experience all four seasons in one week! With school finally out and the onset of summer, be sure to check out the calendar (starting on page 26) to see all the camps, concerts, festivals and more that are going on around town. There is plenty to keep you and the kiddos entertained! Just remember to check them out in advance, in case you need to register or sign up early. And if you happened to miss this month’s cover, the Montgomery County Fair is back and it’s bigger than ever! Read more about it on page 8, and in the calendar as well. Here’s to another great summer in Clarksville, and, as always, thank you for picking us up!

Before you head out for fun in the sun, set aside a day to throw out any expired bottles of sunscreen from summers past and buy a new bottle. While you’re at it, you may want to pick up a few bottles, as studies show most Americans don’t apply enough sunscreen. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying a shot glass worth of sunscreen lotion — about 2 tablespoons — to exposed skin every two hours. That means a 10-ounce bottle should last you approximately 10 applications, or 20 hours of beach or pool time. Now’s also a good time to schedule an annual 6

skin check with your primary care doctor. Need a family physician? Tennova Medical Group is here to help. Our family practice office located on Tiny Town Road welcomes new patients of all ages. what moms need to know about CBD By Heather Marcoux You can drizzle it in your coffee, chew an infused candy or swallow a soft gel capsule. CBD is a cannabis compound that is gaining mainstream popularity and national store chains are planning to stock CBD in addition to their vitamins. But what IS CBD? What does it help with? What's the science behind it—and more importantly—how can it help an everyday mom?

Here's what you need to know about CBD:

WE BREAK IT ALL DOWN FOR YOU.

It's used to treat things like anxiety and insomnia,

What is CBD? CBD, or Cannabidiol is one of the two most common compounds found in Cannabis plants, the other is THC or tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is the compound with intoxicating properties, but CBD is not psychoactive.

The World Health Organization notes that CBD isn't addictive and that "to date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD."

and while there has been a ton of research already, there is still more work to be done. Many people are taking CBD because it helps them relax or get a good night's sleep without giving them the "high" that THC produces.

Check us out on Facebook.

Clarksville Living

Does it work?

More and more people are taking CBD as a supplement, and while some doctors suggest it has a place in treating things like pediatric epilepsy, chronic pain and anxiety, the FDA cautions consumers not to believe other overhyped claims. The FDA has approved some seizure drugs containing CBD, but has also sent letters to companies warning them not to make outrageous claims about what CBD can do (there is no evidence that it can stop cancer cells or cure diabetes, for example).

caution against taking it while you are pregnant or breastfeeding. A recent study published in the journal Pediatrics shows that cannabinoids can be passed from a mother to her baby in the womb, as Consumer Reports notes. Bottom line: CBD is something a lot of adults are exploring and finding helpful for managing anxiety, sleep and even boosting a yoga session. For adults,

it could be a non-intoxicating alternative to a glass of wine, but pregnant women should proceed with caution and always talk to their medical care provider before taking any kind of supplement. For any questions about CBD or hemp products stop by Veteran Growns Hemptopia and let one of our associates help you find the perfect CBD treatment for you.

More research in humans is needed, but the anecdotal accounts of CBD's benefits as a treatment for anxiety, sleep issues and other conditions are stacking up. "I think it's really important to listen to these people and to learn what they're saying," Sara Jane Ward, a preclinical researcher who has studied CBD for more than a decade at Temple University's School of Medicine tells the Philly Voice. "There is a lot of enthusiasm from the research community about the therapeutic potential of CBD for the treatment of diseases needing neuroprotection and antiinflammatory effects and things like that." What the laws are: Congress legalized hemp late last year, but more legislation is needed to untangle CBD from marijuana. As long as the CBD was derived from hemp and not THC-containing marijuana, you can legally purchase it in many forms across the United States.

Can kids use CBD?

Many parents are interested in CBD to help kids with conditions ranging from cancer to Autism, but the FDA doesn't want parents to administer CBD to kids, especially without speaking to a doctor first. "With the exception of Epidiolex, Marinol, and Syndros, no product containing cannabis or cannabis-derived compounds (either plant-based or synthetic) has been approved as safe and effective for use in any patient population, whether pediatric or adult," the agency notes on its website.

What about pregnant and breastfeeding moms and CBD?

larksville native Herbert Roake Jr. was recently presented the Eli Lilly Diabetes Journey Award 75-Year Medal, which reads A Celebration of a Life Well Lived. It is a milestone that has been reached by less than 50 people to date.

“I got diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 8 years old,” Roake said. “That was 75 years ago. My parents kept a record of my treatment, and you can see here, the first entry was Monday, April 24, 1944.” Roake's parents noticed he wasn't eating and was losing weight. They went to a Clarksville doctor who referred them to a specialist in Nashville. “What sticks out is when I first met Dr. Derivaux in Nashville,” Roake said. “He had a display case full of needles. One was a horse needle that was this big, and that long.” He held his hands in the air two feet apart. “Dr. Darivaux jokingly said, 'that's the one I draw blood with'. I dove under a sink, locked my arms and legs around it, and kicked a nurse in the stomach. I couldn't see myself getting stuck with that needle. He apologized too late. He had already scared me to death.”

“I was born and raised here,” Roake said. “My dad actually built this house when I was just a kid. I would get my insulin shot and

then go out and play with the other kids in the neighborhood. I had to stick to a diet, and mom and dad were really strict. They wouldn't even let me have a piece of candy. Once in a while we would go out to a place called Maple Inn. They had selfserve ice cream and I loved that.” Roake says that at the time, his parents would have to boil the needles to sanitize them. The needles were glass with metal tips. “You would sterilize them, and use them over and over,” Roake said. “My dad would have to sharpen them so they wouldn't hurt so bad. “At that time, it was once a day. Now I take two to three shots a day. The newer ones are faster acting. I can take a few units when my sugar is high, and just in a matter of minutes it starts to come down. I remember my mom would have to use a Benedict solution to test my sugar levels, it was blue. She would put it in a test tube, add three drops of urine, then boil it on the stove for five minutes. Whatever color it turned would tell me how much sugar I had in my system. Blue was no sugar, green was a little, yellow was medium, and red meant that my levels were high.” When he was being tested his mother would notate the record with a 0, 1+, 2+, or 3+. That information would be entered into the journal every day. His mother Mayzelle actually developed diabetes later in life. His father's mother had it too. “I guess that's where I got it from,” Roake said. Traveling to Nashville for treatment in 1944 wasn't quite as easy as it is today. Roake laughed as he shared some of those memories. “My dad would have to take me to Nashville in his old car,” Roake started. “In those days, it was an all day trip. The radiator would want to boil over. So, he would have to stop and dip some water from a pond at the side of the road to keep us going. Once you were there, you would check in at the office and wait, sometimes for hours, there were no set appointments back then.” The testing and the injections became just an everyday part of life for Roake. By the time he was 12, he was doing the injections himself. “I just got used to it,” Roake said. “I remember when I was still a young man, my doctor called me into his office. He Continued on page 16

said, 'if you want to die young, just start drinking'. That scared me, and I have stayed away from alcohol all my life. Once, out on the golf course at Fort Campbell, I tried a little bit of wine, maybe two to three ounces, and it threw me into a reaction before I could even get around the course. I never touched another drop.” Roake says, as long as he kept a roll of lifesavers on him, he could do what everyone else was doing. “I hunted and fished with my cousin,” Roake said. “He would watch over me just like my mom and dad. But, I never failed to take my medicine. Without it, I would have been dead a long time ago. Even now, if I eat a piece of cake, I can only do about two bites.” Roake made a career at Acme Boot Co. He also worked in a garage, and a grocery store. He pitched softball for about 30 years for his church team. “I went to APSU for a year back in 1956 or so,” Roake said. “I've had so much happen in my life. Juliette and I have been married for 60 years, and we've had three children, Anthony, Elaine and Rebecca Lee. I just cant believe I'm 83 this year.” Modern technology has made things easier, but Roake remains vigilant. “It has always been a part of me, and of my daily routine,” Roake said. “I can't forget about it, not even for a day. The stuff they've got now is amazing. I have a meter here that keeps track, and I don't have to stick my fingers. My normal range is 150 to 180, At night it starts to drop. If it gets below 80 I can start to feel it so I get some candy, or a cookie and milk. It stays pretty stable throughout the night, then begins to drop when the sun comes up. We haven't figured out why.” Roake doesn't think about the cost of insulin over the years. He has taken shots every day, sometimes two to three times a day for 75 years. He is just thankful, for Eli Lilly and his doctors. He is also thankful for his family. “It hasn't all been smooth sailing,” Roake said. Over the years, different medications and doses have caused reactions. Juliette saved 16

my life one time. She was going to work, but came back to the house. I had not had breakfast, and was sinking under the table. She called an ambulance, and put some sugar in my mouth. The paramedics said my sugar was down to 33. They said if she had not come back when she did, I would have been gone.

“I forgot something, and had to come back, Juliette said. “I give credit to the Lord for bringing me back when he did. We've been married about 60 years, and he is a pretty good guy, so I might stick with him. She smiled. “I'm definitely going to keep her, Roake said. “When I was honored recently, they said less than 50 patients have survived for 75 years. Now, they want to put my name on a plaque at the Juvenile Diabetes Museum in Indianapolis, IN. When they brought the medals down and presented them to me in my doctor's office. Dr Carlson and his associates in Nashville made a pretty big deal of it. “I have been saved two or three times in my life. If I would tell diabetes sufferers anything, I would say first trust in the Lord. Believe in him, and the things he can do for you. But, also, take your medications, and listen to your doctors. I'm so thankful for my doctors and nurses. I've been seeing them regularly all my life.

Drive is a funny thing, some people have it, some don't, and some are lucky to be blessed with an abundance of it, so much so that it's impossible to hide. Local gym-owner Kenny Bennett is one of the lucky ones. His 'drive' recently took him all the way to Los Angeles, California, where he appeared on the show Million Dollar Mile. “I've been in sports my whole life,” Bennett said.

“I grew up playing baseball, basketball and football. Unfortunately, I had a disease called Human Growth Hormone Deficiency. I broke a lot of bones; ribs, ankles, fingers, I also messed up my knee a bunch of times. So I didn't get to go play college ball like I had dreamed.” Bennett underwent treatment for his HGH Deficiency when he was in high school. One summer he shot up about a foot, going from 4'-8” to about 5'-10”.

Bennett graduated from Rossview High School in 2009. He then attended MTSU. He wanted to stay in something sports-related, and eventually got his B.S. in exercise physiology in 2013. He completed his Masters degree in 2016. “I came back to Clarksville and opened Train 36ixty about 2-1/2 years ago,” Bennett said. “I was running it out of my parents basement, then a church for a while. Then I found this building and took a risk. Now, we are outgrowing this space, so we just acquired a second space.”

without the massive start up cost!

In the new space, Bennett is offering more aerobic type classes, like yoga and boxing. He has two other trainers working with him, who teach zumba and yoga. There is also a self defense instructor who comes in once a week, and they've begun working with elementary school-age children. “On this side, we do weight training,” Bennett said. “We are a functional fitness gym. You won't see many machines. We focus on movements that you do throughout life. Many of our clients work in factories, so we do kettle bells, weights, and cardio, but in a different way. We push sleds, do bike sprints, and slam medicine balls, all kinds of stuff.

“We work with everyone from elementary school kids to the general population to professional athletes. We also have a lot of college level athletes. It has grown a lot over the past year. I'm extremely blessed and thankful for that.” Bennett puts it this way, “I didn't play college baseball, but God has different plans for everybody.” After opening the gym, Bennett began posting a lot of his calisthenic workouts on Instagram. “I'm good with upper body work on bars, and I do these crazy push-ups, I put up a lot of videos,” Bennett said. “I guess the folks from Million Dollar Mile found my page. They actually e-mailed me, saying, they saw me, liked what I was doing, and wanted me to apply for the show.”

That happened in July or August of 2018. he interviewed on Skype in August. “It was a fast process,” Bennett said. “There was no word in September, then October hit. They called me and said, 'come try out. You fly out in two days'. I was like, ughhh … ok. I would have hoped for more time, but that's cool.

They called him on a Wednesday and said, you have to be here Friday. “They did costumes and wardrobe, went over the contracts, and talked about the process. On the day we got to see the actual obstacles, we got two hours. It was quick, and a lot of info, and then we moved on. I was trying to process it all, and figure out my best options. “Then they had us in a room, for hours. The shooting part of the show took about 5 days. It was really my first time in L.A. We got to venture out. I got to run at Venice Beach. I work with Alex Poythress, he plays for the Atlanta Hawks. They were in town to play the L.A. Lakers, and he called. I got to see the Lakers - Hawks

game. That was fun.” After days in a small room, waiting for his chance, he got the call. It was the middle of the night, he was awakened from a deep sleep and told it was time to go. Bennett didn't do as well as he had hoped. “On the show, it looks like you take 20 steps to the obstacle,” Bennett said. “But, in real life its quite a jog. I should have trained more appropriately, like run a mile then do an exercise, etc. I'm not a distance runner at all. I'm a power athlete. Anything involving jumping, sprinting, upper body power, I'm good at, but distance running, that's not my thing. “Knowing what I know now, I would have trained

differently and made different decisions. I actually train differently now. I want to start doing some Spartan or Tough Mudder competitions.”

Board-certified general surgeon Dr. Matthew Robinson has extensive experience in treating varicose veins using the minimally invasive VNUS ClosureFAST™ procedure, which results in less pain and bruising than traditional vein-stripping surgery and laser treatment.

Bennett is being a little tough on himself. In all fairness, the athletes the contestants competed against were world class. The guy who ran against Bennett is the top Obstacle Course Race athlete in the world.

What stood out about Bennett, as he was being interviewed by Tim Tebow at the Million Dollar Mile start line, was his humility, and the comments he made about his father. “I dedicated my run to my father,” Bennett said. “My dad was diagnosed with prostrate cancer last year, at the age of 48. He is ex-military and works for the post office in Nashville. He is Kelvin Sr., I'm Kelvin Jr., we both go by Kenny. He has always been tough. I was only 4'-8' in the10th grade, but my dad never let me make any excuses, or get down on myself about my size.

Matthew Robinson, MD, FACS

“So, he called my brother and me. He sat here in the gym and told us about his diagnosis. He was calm, and said, this is what I've got. We're going to get through it. I don't want to see anybody getting down. I'm not. We're blessed, and we'll be fine. He left it at that and walked out, that was the whole conversation.” Bennett says, his mom would keep everyone posted about the effects of the radiation, but if you talked to Kenny Sr. you would have though nothing was wrong at all. “Thankfully, they caught it early, and now he is all clear,” Bennett said. “It definitely scared us all. He is our hero. I've never seen him cry, or hurt. It was a shock to me, and a wake-up call. Now, the whole family is trying to get healthier through eating and exercise.”

Since appearing on the show, Bennett's gym is growing like crazy. “I pray it continues,” Bennett said. “We are getting more equipment, and making some changes. I would love to franchise. I get a lot of requests from people in Nashville. I would love to have four or five

of these all over Tennessee, that's my goal.” Bennett's training strategy is a unique hybrid. “I mentored under some great strength coaches,” Bennett said. “I use a training approach that combines fitness and conditioning. We don't want to just make you sweat. We take a scientific approach. I'm a corrective exercise specialist. We watch how you move, if you're compensating or experiencing pain, we give you exercises to help get past that pain.” Bennett wants his clients to look good, and feel good about themselves. But, also move well. “Our older clients have issues with shoulders, knees and hips,” Bennett said. “We try to get them to move well and feel better. We're big on education as well. We're hoping to do more lectures as we move forward. When I talk about things like nutrition, I'm surprised at how many don't really have the right information. In our new space, I want to do some free education lectures on nutrition, home fitness, things like that.” Bennett is currently the strength coach for NEHS Basketball, and also Clarksville Christian School. He has also done speaking events at Rossview Middle School. “We have a program for some elementary schoolage kids,” Bennett said. “We work on movement, but they have fun. I make obstacle courses for them. They watched the TV show, and are excited about that kind of thing. “My advice is, just get started with something. Pick something, that's number 1. We take a habit based approach. We start with one thing and build on it. Maybe, stop drinking soda. Next, get rid of the Little Debbie cakes, then, don't eat after 7 p.m. Once there is a good base, we put together a meal plan. Same with fitness. We can't throw a bunch of stuff at you right away. We encourage you to start with fitness or nutrition, and then add the other. It all works together.” Bennett does a lot of mobility strength work, and along the way, cardiovascular. He says it's all about building muscle. Everything they do has purpose, the sled, bike sprints, ropes. All tax your cardio, but they build muscle, which builds tone and means more fat is being burned. “I'm blessed, Bennett said. “Who would have thought somebody from Clarksville, TN would end up on that show, standing with Tim Tebow. I'm thankful for the parents I have. I wouldn't be here without them. My mom Tamika is my number one supporter. We call her the Facebook Queen. She's always telling everybody everything.”

Board Member at Humane Society June is an amazing month. It marks the beginning of summer, students celebrate the end of their school year and families are planning vacations. Did you know that June is also “Adopt-A-Cat Month”? Unfortunately, kitten season is in full swing. June is one of the busiest months for shelters and local rescues desperately searching to place

hundreds of unwanted kittens and cats left homeless. Marion County is the second largest County in the state of Florida. Unfortunately, this leads way to extremely high numbers of homeless cats and kittens, feral colonies and overcrowding of shelters and rescues. As a community, we must ban together to help reduce these numbers. We can reduce these numbers by simply spaying and neutering our animals.

Marion County has many programs available to assist the community with the high cost of vetting, spaying/ neutering and placing of homeless pets. We have many options to assist our community with the overwhelming task of reducing our enormous cat population: TLC PetSnip, Sheltering Hands, spay/neuter certificates at The Humane Society of Marion County, Neuter Commuter and local veterinarians offering low cost spay and neuter on designated days. Please contact your local veterinarian to find out

the designated dates, prices and financial assistance available.

Be Sweet to Your Skin CHERRY ALMOND BODY WASH & LOTION

June is also the perfect month to adopt a new fur baby into your family. With shelters and rescues overwhelmed with homeless pets, you’re sure to find the perfect match. Visit the Humane Society of Marion County, Marion County Animal Shelter and your local rescues to see what they have available. When you adopt from your local shelter, the pet you choose will already be fully vetted, spayed, neutered and microchipped for a very low adoption fee. They even have reduced adoption fees on designated days.

If you’re ready to adopt a kitty, you may consider adopting two! This will help with the necessary exercise required, mental stimulation and social interaction cats need. Make sure you choose the perfect cat or kitten that suites your personality. Prepare your home prior to adoption. Buy the necessary items to make your kitty’s new home perfect. If you’re adding to your family, remember patience is very important. Cats take longer to adapt and adjust to their new surroundings. You also need to ensure your fur babies are compatible as well. Join us in celebrating the month of June, “Adopt A Cat Month”. Visit the Humane Society of Marion County, Marion County Animal Shelter or your local rescue and open your home and heart to a shelter fur baby in need. You’re sure to find the perfect match.
