Publisher’s Message You don’t need me (or a weather app on your phone) to tell you that summer is finally here. It’s always nice to try and get away during the summer to the beach, or mountains — but isn’t always practical. We decided to seek out some fun, local area summer bucket list items that you can have a blast checking off all summer long. Be sure to check out Taylor Lieberstein’s article, on page 14 to learn more. Though some you may not be reading this until after Independence Day has passed, it’s still important to pause and reflect on its significance— especially on the presence of Fort Campbell and the sacrifices our soldiers and their families make to ensure our freedom. We at Clarksville Living are sincerely thankful and proud of them all. Speaking of Independence Day, you don’t want to miss the free concert and fireworks show that the City of Clarksville puts on every year at McGregor Park. It’s on Wednesday, July 3rd, starting at 6:30 p.m., and it’s a great place to take the family! Of course we have another outstanding issue packed with articles on everything from great local music to health, along with coverage (on page 8) of a new indoor play area that’s here just in time for some cool indoor time with your little ones. You also don’t want to miss Tony Centonze’s article (on page 18) about “American Floyd,” an amazing local Pink Floyd cover band. We hope you enjoy the issue and thank you for picking us up—stay safe. And try to stay cool!

Brought to you by Tennova Medical Group Depending on how you’re using it, the answer might surprise you. Sunscreen can help reduce your risk of skin cancer, which, according to the American Cancer Society, is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in the United States. Although, if you don’t apply your favorite product correctly, your sunscreen may not work as well as it could. This summer, take these five steps to make sure your sunscreen is doing its job:

1. Measure it out. You may have heard the advice to use a shot glass

full of sunscreen — about 1 ounce — to cover your entire body. But it might be easier to think smaller. One way to apply enough, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), is to rub one teaspoon of sunscreen onto your face and scalp, one onto each arm, two onto your stomach and back, and two onto each leg.

2. Spray generously. Spray sunscreens are certainly convenient. However, the AAD warns that with sprays, it can be hard to see how much you’re actually putting on, which could result in inadequate coverage. If you prefer sprays, apply enough so you can see an even sheen on your skin, and always rub it in.

3. Store wisely. If you’re outdoors in the heat, the U.S. Food and Drug

AAD recommends using at least an SPF 30. For full protection against UV damage, however, make sure your product is labeled “broad spectrum,” which means it has been tested to protect against both UVA and UVB rays, advises the FDA.

5. Reapply at least every two hours, no matter the SPF. The AAD

conducted a survey in 2016 and found that a majority of those polled incorrectly believe that high-SPF sunscreens protect them for longer than low-SPF sunscreens. SPF has nothing to do with the length of time you can spend in the sun. It actually defines how much UVB radiation gets blocked, according to the FDA. No sunscreen lasts all day. Always reapply products every two hours or after swimming or sweating heavily. When in doubt, stay inside! The sun is strongest in the middle of the day, and staying indoors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. can help you both avoid a burn and reduce your cancer risk from overexposure to UV radiation, advises the American Cancer Society. Concerned about your risk for skin cancer? Your primary care provider can give you advice and do basic skin checks. Don’t have a doctor? Tennova Medical Group is here to help. Our family practice office located on Tiny Town Road welcomes new patients of all ages. Call 931-502-2423 or visit TennovaMedicalGroup.com. Ask about our same- and next-day appointments.

Administration (FDA) recommends wrapping your sunscreen bottles in a towel or even storing them in a cooler, as these products shouldn’t be left out in the sun or heat. Also, don’t leave bottles in your car for a prolonged For more health and wellness articles like this one, visit our blog at TennovaWellness.com period of time. If you notice a product has changed color or consistency, toss it out, advises the AAD. This publication in no way seeks to diagnose or treat illness or to serve 4. Rely on SPF — but not entirely. A sunscreen’s sun protection factor as a substitute for professional (SPF) relates only to how well it protects against the UVB rays that cause medical care. sunburn, according to the FDA. ichelle Freiling knows how much of a difference a teacher can make in a child’s life. Soon after enrolling her first child in preschool she learned what a big impact a teacher can have in a parent’s life. In her new book, My Superhero, she tells the story of Ms. Mop, a very special preschool teacher that made a lasting impression on her family. The words and illustrations are all her own except for one illustration drawn by her daughter Mary Beth. Freiling says she wrote the book for more than one reason. She wrote it because of her strong love for her children including her son, Thomas, who had the teacher that inspired the book. She also wrote the book for the late Ms. Mop, the family’s first preschool teacher, who taught her and her family many things. “Ms. Mop was a devoted, trusting, kind and lovable woman. She was the family you needed. I feel it’s important to share this information because life goes extremely fast and we all need guidance from teachers,” said Freiling. When Freiling first met Ms. Mop she was the wife of a deployed soldier, far from her hometown and had a young son that she had recently enrolled in preschool at Madison Street United Methodist Church. Since that time, she has had two more children, moved around many times encountering multiple preschools and teachers, whom she says were all wonderful. However, she confesses there will only ever be one Ms. Mop. “How you?” That’s right. Not, how are you Ms. Mop always greeted her with a “How you?” and it felt like visiting her Grandmother. A detail you can see in the book is that Ms. Mop was in a wheelchair. She always had 2 assistants. The year that Thomas had her was her last year working as a preschool teacher. Being a substitute teacher herself Freiling has experienced things from both a teacher’s

side and a parent’s side. She knows the challenges that come along with being a parent, especially one that has been through multiple military moves. Everything is new and it can feel overwhelming at times. For that reason, she tries to mirror the love and guidance she received from Ms. Mop in the classroom by greeting students and parents with smiles and hugs.

The book aims to encourage readers to recognize and show gratitude for all the effort that so many teachers make each day that often goes unnoticed. You can purchase her book, My Superhero, on Amazon or at the Custom’s House Museum gift shop. She plans on having a second book, a Christmas story about Thomas and Ms. Mop, published by the end of the year.

ark Hawkins is well known in Clarksville. His band, American Floyd, is getting to be well known throughout the southeast United States.

The band's current line-up features several

musicians from Clarksville and the surrounding area. Lynne Halliburton on vocals, Tim Seay on drums, Isaac Frost on bass, Jim Scott on saxophone and vocals, Hawkins and John Williams on guitar. There are also some former Clarksvillians, Herman DePriest and Ann Marie Brown, and even some Kentuckians, Lexi Gordon

and Andy Miller from Elkton. Hawkins says the band is from all over the place, and this year, the band seems to be going all over the place. He was traveling when he took a few minutes to talk about the band's upcoming gigs, and changes to the show. “Yeah, I'm back on the road again,” Hawkins laughed. “We're having a good year. We have shows coming up in Pensacola and Destin, Fla in July. We'll be in Raleigh, NC in August. We're returning to the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach. Then, we come back to Clarksville to play Riverfest on Friday, September 6, 2019.” Hawkins is struck by the size of the venues they play now, like the Ritz in North Carolina. Over the course of 11 – 12 years, the band has worked its way into some pretty serious gigs, at some impressive venues, and developed a following a long the way.

“The Ritz is humongous,” Hawkins said. “And, The Vinyl in Pensacola is too. These places feature big national acts all the time. So does the House of Blues, and this will be our 6th time playing there. We'll be back in Florida in November, with shows at Boca Raton and Palm Beach. And, we're headlining another show, but that information hasn't been released yet.”

American Floyd actually has its own tour bus, but Hawkins says it's cost prohibitive. So now, all the musicians drive in to the shows. They take two or three cars and head to the gig, which has added another dimension for some of the

band members. “Andy and Lexi will go down and stay for a week, sometimes,” Hawkins said. “It works out to be like a paid vacation for them. They get to hang out and see places. When we played Homestead, Fla., Andy, Jim Scott and John Williams stayed for a while. We were so close to the Keys, it just made sense.”

“This is our 12th year, I think,” Hawkins said. “We run out of songs every time we play. The fans don't want to leave. I've never seen anything like it. They just keep wanting more. Last time we played House of Blues, we had to do an encore of two numbers that we had already played. And, everywhere we go is packed, every show.

“Pink Floyd is one of the only bands that has a multi-generational fan base. At these shows, we have 9 - 10-year-old kids sitting on the front row. A lot of our shows are all ages, and they are packed with kids. I can't tell you why. Their parents and grandparents grew up on Pink Floyd, I guess they shared the music and it still resonates. I don't know. Why did Dark Side of the Moon stay on the charts for 14 years?”

“I don't know of another band that compares, in that respect,” Hawkins said. “We have these kids every show with Pink Floyd shirts on, sitting with their dads and grand-dads. Our audience has people from 9 to 70. Some of them are enjoying the music just like they did when it came out back in the 1960's and 1970's. It's just great music, but it can be a little moody. I'm not sure it's the lyrics so much as the music itself. All the pieces of the puzzle just fit together.”

The band got its start back in 2008, a tribute to Pink Floyd. Hawkins, like so many, is a huge fan of their work as a band, as well as that of lead-guitarist David Gilmour. efforts of a lot of talented people. “I get so much satisfaction from this,” Hawkins said. “We've had about 30 member changes over the years, and we've had some great line-ups, but, right now, I've got the best band I've ever had. I'm just blessed to work with these musicians. Everyone in the band is a great musician. They all step up to the plate when we play, and they all love Pink Floyd. “There are a lot of musicians on Broadway in Nashville right now. They're performing with an i-pad, playing what they think the audience wants, with no real connection to the music they're playing. They play all night for $50, spend $40 of it, and think they are going to be signed. God bless 'em. That's their time in the sun, but at this point in my life, I'm about quality, not quantity. If we play twice a year, and put on two great shows, I'm satisfied. But, would I like to play every month? Absolutely.”

The core of the band has been together for a couple of years now, and it shows. American Floyd is now gaining some momentum.

“Right now, we're hitting on all cylinders,” Hawkins said. “Our production is being vamped up. We've got a new video wall. We're working on adding some new lasers, so more eye-candy is on the way. And, now it just seems like the booking agents are believing in us. That's why were getting so many bookings. I've got people calling me now, instead of me calling them. That feels good.”

The House of Blues holds about 1,800. The Ritz seats 1,500 – 1,600. For comparison, Nashville's Ryman Theater seats about 3,500. “These bigger venues inspire us,” Hawkins said. “That pushes you right there, you want to

give it your all, and it makes your day. You've got lots of tribute bands out there now, Journey, the Rolling Stones etc. But Pink Floyd is different. We have a lot of fans come back to see us, again and again, and we don't treat those fans like, 'see ya later.' “We always go out and talk to the fans, sign autographs, and take pictures. We do a two-hour show, and the clubs like that because it's good for business. But the fans love it too. It's hard to do a Floyd show in 90 minutes. Oh my gosh, there is so much material. We are working up new songs for this next year, and re-doing our song list.” Hawkins gets excited when he talks about the music. The band is in the process of adding some of the Syd Barrett stuff, that goes back to the earliest days of Pink Floyd. “We're really looking forward to playing these songs,” Hawkins said. “The crowd comes for the hits, and we will always play them, but now we are digging deeper into albums like Animals. We're branching out more, the band, personnelwise, can pull off these deeper cuts. We'll be doing something from Echoes as well.” The goal is to take it to the next level. He keeps improving the show, and says he would love to perform it in California, New York, and Washington. He buys all the Pink Floyd books when he goes to local book stores. During the shows, he'll ask trivia questions, and give out t-shirts and other prizes. He has to study to stay ahead of the fans. He says they even answer the really tough questions, pretty quickly. “I'm not some rock star up there, I'm a fan too,” Hawkins said. “I want the fans to feel like they got their money's worth, and heard some really good Pink Floyd renditions. We try to stay true to everything we do. I'm a fan of David Gilmour too. Gilmour is a hard nut to crack, I've spent years working on it, and I still am, I'll never stop.

“You recognize Gilmour's playing immediately. It's a great thing to have people say to me, 'man, your Gilmour is just spot-on, the tone is incredible'. That drives me to be better, and to keep on. I wish I could rest on my laurels but I can't.”

NATIONAL

is July 31st!

By Christina Chittenden

J

uly is a month to celebrate so much. We celebrate July 4th as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. We are a nation of immigrants, a society of many cultures. We are a society that should see no

color, no race, and we should embrace the fact we are a beautiful nation of mixture. That is what makes us so unique, so beautiful. July also celebrates “National Mutt Day”. A month that encourages us to embrace the mixed breed. We celebrate the beautiful mixture of fur babies by encouraging families to look past the purebred and opt to adopt a mix breed. July 31st and December 2nd are designated as “National Mutt Day”. Many of us with fur babies that are mutts would probably suggest every day is “mutt day”, however, we celebrate this day specifically in hopes to make families aware of just how special they are.

There are so many mutts in our local shelters desperately awaiting and longing for a new home. These shelters are filled with loving and healthy mixed breed dogs waiting for someone to come and adopt them.

Save your bun from the sun.

National Mutt Day provides an excellent opportunity to find the perfect canine companion. Despite the name, a mutt learns, obeys and trains much like purebred animals. While their lineage cannot be traced and their features a bit murky, their companionship will be faithful. This special day was created to be celebrated on two dates per year, to raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters around the nation, as approximately 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds. Most pure breeds that end up in the shelter are generally rescued quickly by either the public wanting a “less expensive” pure bred dog or by a pure breed rescue. The day’s mission is to educate the public about the sea of mixed breed dogs that desperately await new homes and to celebrate the amazing characteristics that the mix of breeds creates in each individual dog. Mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier, better behaved, they live longer and are just as able to perform the duties of purebred dogs - such as search and rescue, emotional support, and service dogs. There are millions of loving and healthy mixed breed dogs sitting in shelters, who are desperately searching for a new home. Please consider opening your home and heart to a fur baby in need. If adopting is not an option, consider volunteering, fostering or donating.
