Publisher’s Message After one of the hottest Julys in history, I think I can safely say I am ready for fall! Or at the very least, cooler temps. I am ready to put my boots and sweaters back into the rotation. There’s no doubt that this month’s cover caught your attention. This amazing photo (more inside) is from a Wife Carrying Contest. Yes, you read that correctly! It’s on August 17th at the Christ Lutheran Church in Clarksville. Read all about it in Karen Parr Moody’s article on page 12. With the end of summer also comes Riverfest. It’s Clarksville’s longest running festival (32 years!) and it just gets better every year. I hope you can make it this year because it’s going to be amazing and there’s always something for everyone of every age. Get all the deets beginning on page 8. We’ve packed a lot into this issue: an interview with local comedian D.J. Pryor, whose adorable video of a “conversation” he and his baby son Kingston had went viral and lead to a national commercial and more. (by Tony Centonze, page 18) Clarksville’s burgeoning craft beer industry, (by Taylor Lieberstein, page 14) And as always, don’t forget to check out the calendar starting on page 26. For those of you that are getting ready for back to school, I hope it’s a smooth and stress free transition! I include myself in this as my fifteen-yearold son just started driving and begins tenth grade this year. I hope you are able to enjoy the rest of your summer and stay as cool as possible. Leaves will be turning soon, and Pumpkin Spice everything will be here before you know it.

Winding Down Winners Consistently falling short on sleep can have a major impact on a person’s physical and mental well-being. For instance, sleep deprivation can negatively affect a teen’s mood, behavior, immune system, driving ability, and both academic and athletic performance.

Teenagers can experience some pretty hectic days jumping between all their school, athletic and social obligations. Balancing busy schedules may make it harder to fall asleep at a decent hour. Share these steps with your teen to help her calm down before bedtime.

Unfortunately, it’s not easy to come up with one main culprit for this generation-wide sleep shortage. Puberty, early school hours, afterschool sports and activities, homework, and social obligations can all play a role. The National Sleep Foundation also reports that a change in biological sleep patterns can shift sleeping and waking times later during adolescence, and it's not uncommon for teens to fall asleep after 11 p.m.

#relationshipgoals: wife carrying competition

C

ouples seeking a unique way to test their mettle can give “wife carrying” a whirl during an eccentric competition at Christ Lutheran Church. Called the Carry-Thee Competition, the contest is based on Finnish folklore that dates to the 1800s. The “wife” to be carried can be one’s wife or some other partner.

Road near McCraw’s Strawberry Ranch, will host the competition in staggered heats from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. The event is free and open to the public, while the Carry-Thee Competition requires a contestants’ fee of $50 per couple, which will include t-shirts for the event.

The Rossview church, located at 2425 Kirkwood

“I think watching will be as fun as participating,”

says Rev. Jeff Lott, the church’s pastor. “Mostly it will be a fun time. And the winner gets their carry partner’s weight in beer.” That will be a lot of cases of beer, considering the minimum weight for the partner to be carried is 108 pounds. Tennessee Valley Brewery Company will provide the beer. Owners Eric and Wendy Brannstrom, who helped the church organize the event, brew a wide variety of beer, from their refreshing Grapefruit Raddler to their richly nuanced Night Stalker Stout. Additionally, beer, soda, pulled pork, bratwurst and frozen treats will be sold during the event. The event will also feature a children’s area with a slip-and-slide and a cool-off area with misting.

The competition is fully sanctioned by the North American Wife-Carrying Association. Lott says there will be various categories to enter, including those for oldest person, heaviest load and most creative costume. “Fort Campbell is full of these young guys and young gals who would probably love a competition like this,” Rev. Lott says. “I think it’s going to be highly competitive.” During the competition, teams will sprint around a 253.5-metre course designed with various obstacles, including a hay bale and a water feature. The partner being carried must be more than 17 years of age and if the carried partner doesn’t weight at least 108 pounds, a rucksack will be added to compensate for the weight. Contestants can choose from various carrying techniques for the course. There’s the classic piggyback, the fireman’s carry (over the shoulder) or the cheerleaderstyle (sitting on the shoulders). Any carrying method is acceptable, but the most common in such competitions is the

resort at no cost. The winning team at the Sunday River competition brings home the wife's weight in beer and five times her weight in cash. The roots of this bizarre competition can be traced to the 1800s, according to Karolyn Castaldo, director of communications at the Sunday River resort.

“The Estonian seems to be the one that works the best,” says Rev. Lott. “I think it must be as hard for the person being carried as the one carrying. You’ve got to hold on tight.”

“The legend behind the North American Wife Carrying Championship is based on 19th century Finnish legend ‘Ronkainen the Robber’,” Castaldo says. “He had high qualifications for the men he accepted into his band. To prove their worth, men had to compete through a difficult course with a heavy sack, or a woman grabbed from neighboring villages, on their back.”

The original wife-carrying competition began in 1992 in Sonkajärvi, Finland, where the annual Wife Carrying World Championships are held each July. Past winners of the Wife Carrying World Championships have hailed from various countries, including Finland, Russia, Estonia and Lithuania. As with the competition to be held at Christ Lutheran Church in Clarksville, the prize for the Finnish competition is the wife’s weight in beer. The Clarksville-based competition is just one of many smaller events that take place in the U.S., where the North American Wife Carrying Championship was founded in 1999. This organization serves as the sanctioning body for the U.S. and Canada. The North American Wife Carrying Championship has been held annually in mid-October at the Sunday River resort in Newry, Maine, where winners have the option of competing in the World Championships (where such contestants have

Castaldo said the competition attracts a wide variety of participants.

placed as high as fifth in the past). Qualifying events for the world championship are also held in Australia, Sweden and Estonia. Since the competition at Christ Lutheran Church has been sanctioned by the North American Wife Carrying Championship, the winning team will gain entry to the competition at the Sunday River

Castaldo says that it is every bit as difficult for the woman to hold on as it is for the man to race through the various obstacles.

“There are serious athletes who have trained and competed for many years, as well as bucketlisters who want to just try it once with little to no preparation,” she says. “We’ve also had a fair share of marriage proposals happen during the event by contestants who are dating. Rev. Lott hopes that in hosting such a unique competition, it will be an out-ofthe-box way to communicate the personality of the Lutheran denomination to guests. Unlike some of the more fundamental denominations in which drinking alcohol is frowned upon, the Lutheran church allows it. “Lutherans are rebels,” Rev. Lott says. In the past, Christ Lutheran Church has hosted events that have associated it with craft beer, for example, including a popular Christmas market and an Oktoberfest. “We try to organize outreach events to show people that all Christians are not the same,” Rev. Lott says. Despite his embrace of the unusual when it comes to event planning, Rev. Lott said he will not participate in the wife-carrying competition on Aug. 17.

HOP ON THIS: Clarksville's Growing craft beer scene By Taylor Lieberstein

Over the last decade, the craft beer industry has seen unparalleled growth. Today, most Americans live within 10 miles of a brewery, unheard of a few years ago. According to Brewer’s Association there are around 99 craft breweries in Tennessee, each one trying to distinguish themselves from other brewers

trying to distinguish themselves. For that reason, it is becoming increasingly easy to find a high-quality and flavorful craft beer in Clarksville. These independent brewers are equally as passionate about enhancing the Clarksville community as the beers they are brewing. As beer drinkers we are looking for new, unique approaches to the flavors. Local breweries are meeting these demands by continuously innovating with different varieties of flavors, hops and fruits such as Star Spangled Brewing’s orange peel and coriander infused brown ale, Cousin Eddie. FEATU R E “I joined CYP when I started at the IDB, five years ago,” Matthews said. “This is a place where people can come and network with other young professionals, and get information about who's who in the community. It's a chance to see how things really work.

ames (J.C.) Matthews, at just 32, is making a name for himself in Clarksville. The Dyersburg, TN native was just honored by the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce with its Clarksville Young Professional of the Year award.

Matthews responded to the Chamber's recognition. “This is an amazing honor, but I don't do this for the fame or fortune,” Matthews said. “I just love doing for, and helping others in, this community.” “When you can help bring new industry into the community, that changes the lives of its citizens, that is very rewarding. We at the Industrial Development Board (IDB) are helping people move out of minimum-wage jobs, and to one of these new companies that pays $15 - $16 an hour, plus benefits. That's a lifestyle change for them, and that is our focus.” Matthews path to the IDB was not direct, or even planned. He came to Clarksville by way of Austin Peay State University. His brother preceded him by one year and played football for the Gov's. “Back in '04 or '05, I just wanted to follow my brother,” Matthews said. “We had played football together growing up, I was hoping to do that in college, but by the time I arrived he had already transferred to MTSU.” Matthews majored in Public Management, his minor was in Criminal Justice. After graduation, he pursued his education at Bethel University,

where he received his Masters in Business Administration. “It was soon after that I saw the posting for this job with the IDB,” Matthews said. “I made the move, that was in 2014, I am about to celebrate my 5-year anniversary here.” “We (IDB) help bring big business to Clarksville-Montgomery County, companies like Hankook, Google, and LG. We also work with tenured legacy companies like Trane Co.. Our goal is to bring industry to this community.” “We will receive a Reference of Information (ROI),” Matthews said, “on companies that have expressed in interest in moving to Tennessee. These agencies will reach out to us with questions about demographics. I’m the guy that answers those questions. “Right now, a lot of companies really want to be in middle Tennessee. One of our advantages is land, a luxury that Nashville doesn't have so readily available anymore. We have been able to pull together large parcels of land, and that has become an advantage for us.” Matthews is a past Chairman of Clarksville Young Professionals, he is still involved in the organization, and talked about its mission. From CYP – “This group strives to create a platform for Young Professionals to build relationships, develop professionally, and contribute to the economic development and high quality of living in our community.” ClarksvilleLivingMag.com

“I encourage people to join CYP, and get involved. You can dialogue directly with the change-makers in this community. It's a great place for professionals who want to aspire to leadership roles, or have political ambitions. They can get mentored and learn about things that are of interest to them. And also, meet like-minded individuals who have similar goals.” Mathews says he's still not where he ultimately wants to be. “I'm still learning,” Matthews said. “You have to have that attitude. You have to want to continuously learn, and get better, always working towards improving the community, and having a voice in what's happening.” “I just take it one day at a time. You never know how things are going to unfold. I wouldn't say I have political aspirations, but I do have an interest in what's going on in that area.” He praises Frank Tate and the rest of his team at IDB. Our community is competing daily with similar markets, inside and outside Tennessee. Matthews explains that Chattanooga and Murfreesboro have the same dynamics as us, and also says that Tennessee is popular with businesses around the country and around the world right now. Lastly, Matthews talked about the requirements of his job, and his approach at the IDB. “This is not just a 40-hour-a-week job,” Matthews said. “You have to be ready to give whatever is needed, you have to have a true love for the community, stay humble, and stay committed.” “We're always looking five to ten years ahead. We're not just courting companies, we're making sure we have what they need. We have to stay ahead of our competition. You never know what opportunities might come.”

#DADLIFE: positively viral A local comedian made a big splash recently when a short video of him talking with his son went viral. DJ Pryor who's about to turn 31, is already a seasoned professional, recently celebrating the 16th anniversary of his first on-stage comedy performance, but, he might have met his match with son Kingston, who at only 18 months old is quite the scene-

stealer. “I got started when I was just 15,” Pryor said. “I knew I had a gift, and I wanted to see where it would take me. I was raised in a violent neighborhood, there were a lot of gangs and drugs, but I wasn't in to that stuff. I knew I was better at being funny.”

As a teenager, Pryor would make the 7-mile walk to a local comedy club, hoping for a chance to share his talent. “One night, the bouncer said, 'I can't let you in here.'” Pryor said.” “I said, 'if I can make you laugh will you let me in.' I did, and he did, of course the owner was upset. I don't remember the joke I told, it was probably something about Michael Jackson, MJ was a big part of my performance back then.” The bouncer talked the owner into letting young Pryor have a shot. “I was supposed to have two minutes,” Pryor said. “But, the performer didn't show up that night. So the owner was in the background signaling me to keep it going. I bet I was on that stage for about 45 minutes.”

That was his first big moment, and it felt right. “I thought, okay, this might be something,” Pryor said. “I'm a storyteller. I pull from my real-life experiences. Most of the comics I look up to do the same. Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy are the tops of my list, but I love comics like Jerry Seinfeld as well. I actually just met a writer who has worked with him for 30 years.

just some unreachable dream. He has been on a path to success for sometime, but it hasn't been easy. “I've always been working in the comedy scene,” Pryor said. I recently did a CBS Showcase. They hired 21 actors to come in and perform sketches. We did a week long show. Scouts and casting directors, all the Hollywood elite came in to see us, and they picked people for different shows that they are writing, producing and directing. That was a big break for me. With that, I felt my career was really beginning to take shape. And then this video hit, and it just took off.”

Pryor says he has several things on the table right now, but wants to be careful moving forward.

“I'm also a big force of energy that wants to give light and positivity, even in my darkest times. I'm heavy in my faith, God has gotten me through every dark day. Even in this moment of victory, I'm very connected to God. I'm just a guy who likes to laugh, I don't take myself too seriously. My house is light. That video gave the world a glimpse into my life. We have serious moments, like everyone, but we find a way to laugh about things.”

As far as him putting God and family first, Pryor credits his upbringing. His biological father is deceased. He speaks fondly of his mom Desiree, and Rodney Pryor, “the man who raised [him].” Pryor is married to Shanieke and they are raising two boys, Kingston and Jabari. “I have had great momentum,” Pryor said, “much of which seems to come from the struggle. It's like a slingshot, you have to pull back before you go forward. There were times I thought, how am I back to this point again, but each step forward surpasses the last one. It's been 16 years of back and forth, steady then low, but always moving forward. I'm comfortable with the low periods, they no longer phase me. I tend to thrive off my failures. The struggle makes you appreciate the success more. Continued on page 20

at my son, and he was looking at me like, 'I get it'. I said, 'do you feel me now', and he went, (Pryor makes baby gibberish sounds), and I said, 'really?' Kingston climbed up on the couch, and Pryor said to his wife, “baby, get the phone”. “It just went from there,” Pryor said. “This is something that happens all the time. Kingston and I always talk like that, but this time it was different because of the pauses. We were talking. He would let me finish, wait for a beat, then chime in, like 'yeah, I agree'. I was like, he is so animated. This is great. Every time my back is against the wall, it just makes me want to try harder.”

is one of the Kings of Comedy, and definitely someone that I look up to.”

While performing in the CBS Showcase, Pryor was approached by Tichina Arnold, one of the stars of the sitcom The Neighborhood. She was impressed by his performance.

On June 4, 2019, Pryor's world began to change, dramatically. His wife posted a video of an intense discussion Pryor was having with his 18-month-old son Kingston, and quickly, tens of millions of people on social media found it to be both heartwarming and humorous.

“I spend about half my time in Los Angeles now,” Pryor said. “Tichina Arnold came up to me at the CBS Showcase, and gave me a hug. She said, 'you're a star'. She loved my sketch, and told Cedric The Entertainer to come see me. After that performance, he gave me some love, which is great. Cedric

“So, we were watching the grand finale of Empire, and I was perplexed,” Pryor said. “I was debating how I felt about it. My wife and I were having this conversation. I looked down

“Kingston was only 18 months old when we shot this. This time there was a new joy, like 'daddy's getting me, oh yeah'. The look on his face was like OMG. He was right there in it. What made me laugh, in the video he is making hand gestures, and it took every muscle in my face not to break, cause that was so hilarious. Our whole family talks with our hands, so he was bound to do this. It's what he sees all the time.” The video is about one minute long. Pryor says it was actually shot on May 2nd, then posted on June 4th. It went viral almost immediately. “I was working on some music, and suddenly everybody was congratulating me,” Pryor said. “After the third message like that, I went online to see what they were talking about. When I looked, the video was already at 500,000 views. I did a video some time ago that did 1.5 million, and I thought well if it goes past that I'll be impressed. “Social media went crazy. Ten hours after posting, it had hit 25 million views. I was like, man this is crazy. I think it's over 100 million now.”

Take the month of August to revive your summer skin

The next day, Pryor's phone was ringing. He said it was cool but overwhelming. “We were like oh my God,” Pryor said. “You don't even know how these people get your number. I was getting calls from all over the world. People called wanting to license the video. I called my agent and manager and said, 'what do we do, we're in the hot seat'?

“By the time my team woke up in Los Angeles, and figured out what was going on, this had already caught fire. They said DJ Pryor needs to keep ownership of the video. We didn't have it watermarked, so it got away from us, in fact someone posted it to Twitter,

and that quickly surpassed the views on Facebook.” Pryor then went on a whirlwind media tour. He and Kingston were asked to do a Denny's commercial for Father's Day, and then flew to New York to appear on NBC's Today Show. “Yep, I did the Today Show,” Pryor said. “My favorite might have been getting the call from Chris Cuomo, and then hearing the news that Will Smith shared the video. I respect Will Smith so much, he does it all. This is one of my idols growing up. When he shared it, I got emotional. I was happy. Not only did he share it, but he gave me credit, and that was deep for me. I went from 1,300 followers to 140,000. Much thanks to Will Smith. “Chris Cuomo said to me after the interview, 'whatever you've got going on, keep me in the loop. I want to be on your side'. That's great. These are guys who are up here (hand raised) to me. It's been humbling and overwhelming. They see a young guy being a dad in a positive way, and they want to help me. That's just amazing to me.” Pryor and Kingston did the Denny's Father's Day commercial. He has been pitching a sitcom based on his life. He just spent a week meeting with production companies. While there, they were pitching him on ideas for shows, and asking him to audition. Now he waits. “The Denny's commercial was big for Kingston and me,” Pryor said. “I think we'll further explore that path at some point. For now, we're just working, and trying to figure it out. I want Kingston to be a normal kid. When he gets a little older he can decide if he wants to do this. I think he's starting to pick up on what's going on. He's looking like, 'I'm royalty now. I'm the most famous baby in all the world', and he is.

“I want us to remember the day that our family made the entire world laugh. Jabari is 8 years old, and he is an actor, he already has an audition to play a lead in a film. A director saw his work and wanted to meet him. He can already cry on cue. So, my competition is my children. But, that's a dad's dream. They have these natural abilities. God gave us all a gift. “The timing on this video is a great boost for my career opportunities. People have seen the video, and now tables I couldn't get invited to before are like, we have to bring DJ Pryor in and look at him. We'll just have to wait and see what's next.”

INDOOR GAMES to help your PUP beat the summer heat!

By Christina Chittenden Summertime usually means “fun in the sun”. However, while spending time outdoors can be healthy for you and your dog, it can also be extremely dangerous. Just as humans can suffer from heat stroke or exhaustion when we spend

too much time in the heat, our dogs can also develop those same conditions. That’s why it is very important to have some fun indoor activities to keep your dog mentally stimulated, even on those hot summer days.

Often times, we think of our pets as having human tendencies, a term known as anthropomorphism. Have you ever thought to yourself, “If I were my dog, I would want…”? It’s important to understand that innate abilities of our dogs as well as the learned behaviors and the differences between the two. Most dogs have specific traits manifested within them and, of course, some have more strong ones than others. Interestingly, it’s easier to tone down a dog’s motivation than it is to build it up. For example, if a dog never shows interest in playing with a ball, it would be difficult to increase that desire. On the other hand, if they were to get excessively excited when presented with a ball, teaching them to “tone down” their enthusiasm would be a far easier task. Learned behaviors are behaviors that are learned inadvertently. For example, gestures we do such as going to the counter where the treats are, that invoke their attention. When our dog sits and waits for us to give them a treat, we can see that this behavior was created by our own actions. Though these behaviors are learned through experience, this doesn’t always equate solely to formal training. Innate behaviors, on the other hand, are genetically hardwired into our dog. When it comes to playing games with our dog, we must first determine their abilities.

22

Clarksville Living

Clarksville Living How long can they stay entertained by that particular game? We never want to push the dog to the point of leaving the game on their own. If their attention span lasts only two minutes, limit the game to a minute and a half. Games you can play inside your home:

halloween costume COVER contest

Hide & Seek

The most important thing to remember with these types of games it to incorporate obedience into them. Using a high-value item (toy, treat, ball), walk over to your sofa and leave the treat on top. Tell your dog to find it. You can even make this more complex by touching multiple spots on the sofa but only leaving the treat in one place. Another variation of this is the “shell game”. Using a Tupperware container or cardboard box, put a hole in the top where you can place a treat inside and then shuffle the container while your dog watches you. Let them determine which box has the treat, and reward them when they do!

Cup & String Process Game

In other words, a self-created Pez dispenser! Cut a whole in the bottom of a cup and place a string through it. Tie the string between two chairs and, while your dog is watching, drop a scoop of food or a couple of treats into the cup. The idea is for your dog to nudge the cup to get the food out. A more complicated version would be to use a 2-liter bottle and a stick.

ScentWorx Jr.

Everything you need to teach your dog how to find ANY scent! This kit has been tried on several dogs who were able to detect odors just like K9 Police dogs within only three weeks.
