Editorial. The racing season has started in the UK and a perfect example of the diversity of the racing scene is the 750 Motor Club. With an aim of providing reasonably priced motorsport for competitors, they also cover many different categories, with saloons, sports cars, prototypes and even single seaters all on the same race programme, it also provides a great days motorsport action for the enthusiast. By the way, it’s my birthday in April and if anyone is looking for a last minute present to get me, then take a look at Page 8. I believe they still have a few left!

Nissan power Hoy attack on 24 Hours title.
Olympic cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy will fulfil his motorsport dreams in June, when he competes in the Le Mans 24 Hour race. This has been made possible through Nissan’s accelerated driver development program which will allow the 2015 LMP3 champion and most successful Olympic cyclist to become the first British gold medallist to compete at Le Mans. The Eleven times World Champion and Six times Gold Medallist in Cycling has been working towards this goal for the last three years and is excited to be competing in the legendary 24 hour race. Hoy started racing with Nissan driving a Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 in the British GT Championship in 2014 and graduated to the European Le Mans series last year in the new Nissan powered Ginetta in the LM P3 prototype class. Hoy and co-driver Charlie Robertson scored victories in three of the four races in the Team LNT Ginetta to clinch the LM P3 driver’s title. This year Hoy will drive for the Algarve Pro Racing team on board a Nissan powered Ligier JS P2 chassis at Le Mans and at the opening two rounds of the European Le Mans Series, driving with Frenchman Andrea Pizzitola and fellow Brit Michael Munemann, who was runner up in the 2015-16 Asian Le Mans Series.

A new event plans to bring Formula 1 action to the streets of Glasgow this summer. Ignition, Festival of Motoring, will run between 5th-7th August 2016 and should see David Coulthard, Red Bull Racing and the Stig in action on a street circuit in Glasgow. The three day motoring festival will take over the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre and SSE Hydro Arena and surrounding streets to create Glasgow’s first ever street circuit. The event will showcase all aspects

of motoring as well as paying homage to some of the World’s finest motor racing heros. Coulthard will drive the Red Bull RB7 and there will be further track action from a selection of race, rally and supercars, plus bikes. Organised by the team behind Top Gear Live, it should be one of the most exciting, ambitious and complex motor shows ever to be staged in Scotland. There will be track action on all 3 days and there will also be iconic cars on static display including a collection of Colin McRae rally cars. Scotland is one of only five countries in the world to have .produced World Champions on two, three and four wheels and this will be celebrated by the Ignition event. The Top Gear live stunt team will add excitement to the Live Action zone, and Top Gear magazine will display some of the finest supercars in the World. There will be a Motor Sport Hall of fame celebrating Scottish success in motorsport, and a motorcycle Hall to display all types of motorbikes from track and road. The Classic Car fan is not forgotten with a Vintage and Classic Hall. Howard to defend Clio Cup title. Mark Howard will remain with Team Pyro to defend his Renault UK Clio Cup Masters class title for the championships older drivers. At the age of 51, he was the first of the ‘Over-38s’ to cross the line in five of last years races, as team mate to the top two drivers in the overall championship. This year he will be team mates with returning BTCC driver Mike Bushell, promising 2015 newcomer Josh Price and rising star Senna Proctor. Mark is no stranger to winning, having won a Renault 5 Turbo title in the early nineties.
Caterham launch Turkish series Oak Racing unveil 2016 livery. The Ligier JS P3s of Oak racing will run in the livery of the Ingenico Group in the 2016 European Le Mans Series. The Ingenico Group are World leaders in the field of integrated payment systems, and will join the teams existing partners Marcassus Sport, the Sathe department and the Francois Vaultier & Co Group. The teams drivers are Erik Maris, Jacques and Pierre Nicolet and Jean-Marc Melin.

Caterham is expanding with the launch of its first ever race series in Turkey, in partnership with Intercity. Twenty cars will compete in thirteen races at the former Turkish Grand Prix circuit Intercity Istanbul Park. The series will offer an arrive and drive format which will give both local and International drivers the opportunity to drive the identical 180 bhp Caterham Superlight R300 cars prepared by Intercity. The series will start in April and consist of 6 two race weekends with a 1 race finale in November. Page 6

UK Slot Car Festival returns to the British Motor Museum. This exciting festival promises to be a fantastic day out for the whole family over the weekend of the 14th and 15th May. All the major manufacturers including Scalextric, Carrera, SCX, Slot.it, NSR, Ninco and many others will be at the event. It aims to showcase all aspects of the slot car world, including collectors, racers and families and will have new for 2016 the Slot Car Wall of Death competition and Stunt Slot Car Shows. There will be plenty of interactive activities to enjoy, including free tracks to try, rally stages, oval Banger racing, a drag strip, HO scale tracks, Digital layouts and a massive retail and trade area with interviews and product launches. Visitors will also have the chance to meet the manufacturers and swap, buy and sell cars, plus play for free on a host of tracks showing some of the latest innovations such as App controlled racing and Arc Air, which is a wireless hand throttle from Scalextric. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the Gaydon Spring Classic Car gathering outside the museum. The Donington Historic Festival, which takes place between the 30th April and the 2nd of May 2016, will bring back the sound of Formula 1 to Donington Park, as historic Formula 1 cars stage a series of spectacular demonstrations on the first two days of the Donington Historic Festival. The latest cars will be the 2002 Jordan EJ12 as driven by Takuma Sato, the ex-Michael Schumacher 1992 Benetton B192 and the 1990 Camel Lotus 102 as originally driven by Derek Warwick, Martin Brundle and Johnny Herbert. Also promised are the 1983 Williams FW08 as originally driven by Keke Rosberg and Jacques Laffite, the 1983 Osella FA1D originally driven by Jean-Pierre Jarier, Piercarlo Ghinzani and Corrado Fabi, and © Janet Wright the ex-Rupert Keegan 1977 Hesketh 308E. It is also hoped that a pair of Tolman Grand Prix cars will be there, with the 1985 TG-185 as driven originally by Teo Fabi and the 1984 TG-184 which was Ayrton Senna’s regular test car throughout 1984. With a mixture of Lamborghini V12, Ford DFV V8 and Hart engines, the sound should be fantastic round the sweeps and bends of the historic Donington Park circuit. Page 7

McLaren 570S Coupe - Best of the Best. The McLaren 570S Coupe has received the highest accolade at the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016, being named ‘Red Dot: Best of the Best’ for design quality and groundbreaking design. Awarded by a jury of 41 independent designers, design professors and specialist journalists, this award celebrates the aerodynamic focus of the 570S Coupe
Alpine hunting for success in 2016 WEC. Signatech-Alpine have revealed that they will be competing in the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship with a pair of Alpine A460 cars with an aim to take LMP2 victory. The cars will be driven by Frenchman Nelson Panciatici and Chinese drivers David Cheng and Ho-Pin Tung in No. 35 and French driver Nicolas Lapierre, American Gustavo Menezes and Monegasque Stephane Richelmi in No. 36. With new LMP2 regulations due in 2017, the Alpine A460 features a new FIA homologated chassis with a closed cockpit for improved driver safety and enhanced aerodynamic efficiency. It is powered by the same Renault-Nissan Alliance 4.5 litre V8 engine as the A450b, which develops 550 HP and drives through a six speed sequential gearbox. The two cars sport a blue and orange livery, the colour scheme chosen by Alpine since its comeback in 2013. Each car will be distinguishable by national flags, the French flag for No. 36 and the Chinese flag for No. 35, which will be entered under the name of Baxi DC Racing Alpine. DC Racing won several Asian Le Mans Series Titles before joining forces for the 2016 season with Signatech-Alpine who will run the programme’s technical, sporting and logistical sides. After winning last year’s 8 Hours of Shanghai, the team is looking to continue to make progress in the WEC. April 2016
Citroen ready to defend WTCC title. For its final season in the series the double World Championship team are entering two Citroen C-Elysee cars for Jose Maria Lopez and Yvan Muller, who between them have claimed six of the last eight titles in the competition. With an aggressive new livery, the cars will begin their defence of the title at Paul Ricard in France. New rules to try and level the playing field mean that the reigning World Champions will carry 80 kg of ballast in the first two meetings of the season before a rebalancing based on results. Other changes include a reverse grid for the opening race and the Manufacturers Against the Clock contest to be held after qualifying. Page 10

RACE RETRO ACQUIRED BY CLARION EVENTS LTD Race Retro, the international historic motorsport show, has been acquired by Clarion Events Ltd from Live Promotions Events Ltd. Clarion will take ownership of the three-day event following on from the 2016 event. Clarion adds Race Retro to it’s motoring portfolio, which already includes the UK’s biggest indoor classic car event The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, the Practical Classics Restoration and Classic Car Show, and the newly launched National Car Club Awards. Daniel Nwaokolo, Event director for Clarion Events, said: “Race Retro is a fantastic event and with many of the clubs that support our existing classic motoring events participating in historic motorsport, the acquisition is a natural progression as Clarion continues to support and develop with the classic movement. “Race Retro comes to us as a well established, well supported show thanks to Live Promotions many years of hard work, and we look forward to building on the excellent foundations in place to further grow and develop the show using the vast experience of the Clarion team.” Live Promotions purchased Race Retro from founder Ian Williamson in 2009, six years after the inaugural event. Colin Ward, Managing Director of Live Promotions Events Ltd, said: “Given our own expanding event portfolio, it is the right time to pass the baton of Race Retro to Clarion Events and we wish them every success for the future.” Race Retro 2017 will take place at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, on Friday 24th to Sunday 26th February. It treated visitors to a truly blistering track performance, shaving almost a second off the Performante’s time. In the hands of precision driver and race car instructor Tim-Marshall Rowe it posted a time of just 62.64 seconds. Jaguar F-Type SVR Fastest Production Jaguar ever! The new Jaguar F-TYPE SVR, the fastest production Jaguar ever, has been put through its first high speed test drive with Fast and Furious star Michelle Rodriguez at the wheel. On a closed highway in the Nevada desert, home to the world’s fastest road race the Silver State Classic Challenge, the actress pushed the car to its top speed with the speedometer indicating 201mph - a personal top speed for Michelle.
In 2015 Porsche won the Le Mans 24 Hour race with a 1-2 victory, they took the Manufacturers World Championship title and Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber became the Drivers’ World Champions, so for this year they will race No1 and the sister car of Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb will carry No 2. For the first time, Porsche fully exploits the WEC regulations by deploying three different aerodynamic packages to make the car best suit each race track. The two energy recovery systems of the hybrid drive have been improved in terms of efficiency and the weight of the four cylinder turbo engine has been reduced. Also the components of the electric drive have become more powerful and efficient including the optimised electric motor at the front axle, the power electronics and the new generation of lithium-ion battery cells in the in-house developed battery. The new front axle allows for more set up options, to go with the tyre development done by Michelin, to give the car a more refined overall setup for the new 919 Hybrid.
Porsche 911 RSR 3rd in Florida By finishing 3rd in the 12 Hours of Sebring in Florida, Porsche has consolidated its strong position in the IMSA Sports Car Championship. In a gripping race, Earl Bamber (NZ), Frederic Makowiecki (F) and Michael Christensen (DK) finished in 3rd place in the GTLM Class. This moves them up to 2nd in the championship.

Bumper entry for World and Euro Rallycross Championships. The 2016 FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy has a total of 17 supercars entered, each having more than 600 bhp. The entry has two Peugeot 208 WRX for nine times WRC Champion Sabastien Loeb and last years runner up Timmy Hansen, a Citroen DS3 for regeining Champion Petter Solberg, a pair of Audi S1 EKSRX quattro for Mattias Ekstrom and Toomas Heikkinen and a pair of Seat Ibiza RX for Rene Munnich and Reinis Nitiss. Johan Krisoffersson and Anton Marklund will be driving Volkswagen Polo RX with Robin Larsson in an Audi A1 and Liam Doran driving a Mini RX. These drivers will fight it out over 12 rounds all across the world. The European Championship is made up of five events in Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Latavia and Germany and has a record breaking 23 full time enties. Subaru has unveiled the all-new 2017 Impreza sedan and hatchback ahead of the New York International Auto Show. The first model to be underpinned by Subaru’s advanced new Global Platform architecture, the new Impreza is engineered to deliver significantly higher levels of driving pleasure, agility, crash protection and ride comfort. The Subaru Global Platform will underpin a variety of upcoming Subaru vehicles, including hybrids and the next generation of Subaru’s supremely capable, all-terrain SUV and crossover models. As before, every Impreza is equipped as standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which maximises driving agility, stability and traction on all surfaces, and gives the car a key advantage over front-wheel drive competitors. The all new 2017 Impreza 5-door hatchback is currently under consideration for the European market.

West returns to Chateau Impney Hill Climb to claim his title after almost 50 years. A Droitwich man who triumphed in the final Chateau Impney sprint in 1967 as a teenager, but never had his win recorded properly, is on a mission to claim his rightful place in the Chateau Impney record books almost 50 years on. David West first competed at Chateau Impney in the last ever Hagley & District Light Car Club sprint event in 1967. He wasn’t meant to be competing but jumped in the car at the last second to replace Fred Jones, a driver for Team Autoquip, who was called away due to an emergency. With no time or thought to inform the organisers, David drove Jones’s 1275cc Morris Mini Cooper S up the old 550-yard course, going up against six other Mini drivers, as well as a more powerful Triumph 1300, and completing the course in an outstanding time of 28.49 seconds. Despite David’s win, it was Fred’s name that was added to the Chateau Impney records. And with no further events held for almost half a century, the wrong remained un-righted. Nearly 50 years later, David was able to put tyres to tarmac at Chateau Impney once again at the inaugural Hill Climb in 2015. Taking on the more challenging course in his own 1967 Austin Mini Cooper S – he was ready to make his mark and earn his rightful place in the venue’s record books. However, he was pipped at the post by Richard Parsons, who competed in a Morris Mini Cooper S, by just a quarter of a second. Although David came a credible second in his class, it wasn’t the result he craved and so he is returning to the 2016 event knowing exactly what he needs to do to get a chance at the top spot: “I’m not going to fluff it on the line, like I did last year!” Rod Spollon, event director of the Chateau Impney Hill Climb, is excited to welcome an original sprint trial competitor back to the Chateau: “Although we can’t rewrite the history books and give David his original title, we are absolutely delighted to give him the opportunity to win it back at the 2016 event. “David’s competition run at the inaugural Hill Climb last year was agonisingly close, and now that he’s had the chance to drive the course, we are excited to see if he can finally claim the class win that he craves at the event in July.” Unsurprisingly, David noticed quite a few changes between the event in 1967 and its revival in 2015 – and not just the length of the course. “Health and safety at today’s events is far superior to what it was in those days,” said David. “We used to be able to get into a car and just put a crash helmet on – you could literally just turn up on the day and drive. Now the records have to show the right names and permit numbers. What happened to me in 1967 couldn’t happen now.” The Chateau Impney Hill Climb takes place on 9 and 10 July in Droitwich, Worcestershire, and will see 200 pre-1967 cars race against the clock to claim victory on one of the UK’s most challenging hill climb courses. The UK’s largest reliability rally for Vintage cars will take place between the 15th and 17th of April 2016. One hundred and ten competitors will set off from Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire on a 700 mile trip to Gleneagles in Scotland, competing in the Flying Scotsman Rally. The Endurance Rally Association (ERA) organised event will travel through Lincolnshire and the Yorkshire Wold, north to Scotland via Northumberland, to take in some of the finest Lochs and Glens before arriving at the Gleneagles Hotel. This is the eighth running of this event, and as usual it has attracted an international entry from all over the world. Regular competitors Bill Ainscough in his 1927 Frazer Nash Sports and David Thomson in his 1936 Talbot 105 Alpine have competed in all seven events so far, while defending champion William Medcalf, a two times winner of the event, will be trying to make it a hat trick of victories in a 1925 Bentley 3 litre.

In its 718 Boxster, Porsche is deliberately revisiting the concept of the legendary 718 mid-engine sports car. With its lightweight construction, strong four-cylinder flat engine and precise chassis, it won numerous international races in the 1950s and 1960s. Today the four-cylinder power unit is water-cooled and turbocharged. From its two litres of displacement, the new machine in the 718 Boxster delivers 220 kW (300 hp). The 718 Boxster S with a 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine takes this figure up to 257 kW (350 hp) thanks to its turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. Compared with previous Boxster models, this corresponds to an increase of 26 kW (35 hp) in each case. Redesigned from scratch, the engines also impress with their efficiency: depending on the model and equipment, the consumption figures are up to 13 per cent lower than the respective predecessor models. The completely retuned chassis, more powerful brakes and not least the emotive tone are designed to convert the especially compelling power development into even more driving fun. The new model line has also undergone comprehensive further development in its design. Only luggage compartment lid, windscreen and convertible hood have been left unchanged.

© Simon Wright As well as individual clubs working on cars, there were several stages and workshop areas where professional restorers demonstrated some of the many techniques involved in restoring classic cars to their showroom finish. This show differs from most other Classic car shows in that it encourages rusty wrecks to be exhibited alongside fully restored classic cars, as a before and after. © Simon Wright others. There were some very unusual vehicles in this display, the earliest being a 1906 Holsman G10, a rare example of a motorised farm buggy. The Holsman Automobile Company of Chicago reckoned that High Wheels travel all roads because all roads are made to be travelled by high 1906 Holsman G10 wheels, and that their cars rode like a carriage. This was probably true at the time, as most roads would have been cart tracks in a lot of the country.They initially proved popular in the mid-west, but the firm did adopt such new items as pneumatic tyres and they ceased production in 1910. The car used a manila driveshaft, the rope was known to slip on wet days. The vehicle did not have a radiator, clutch or brake pedal as Holsman thought that the foot could not © Janet Wright subconsciously act quickly enough in an emergency to stop the vehicle from its top speed of 10 mph. The 1919 Ford Model T was one of the 250,000 that was originally sold in Australia between 1908 and 1927. built cars and non - British Empire goods. Another interesting car in the barn find area was a 1958 Renault 4CV which was © Simon Wright in remarkably good condition, thanks mainly to it never having been driven on salted roads in winter. The only marks on the paintwork were from storage, with it having been off the road for 42 years. The seats are slightly worn but the rest of the car is genuine authentic. The public voted for their favourite Barn Find vehicle, with the award going to a 1953 Aston Martin DB2 owned by Dave Whiting.

There were various competitions and awards presented throughout the show. The Lancaster Insurance ‘Pride of Ownership’ had 20 finalists displayed together and the public voted during the show for a winner. This went to the 1969 Gold coloured Ford Capri of Stuart Turp, who beat Jim Scott’s 1966 Ford Cortina and Martin Healey’s © Janet Wright 1964 Saab 96 2 stroke. The Golden Spanner award and title Restorer of the Year went to James Cribb with his lovely restored 1989 Austin Metro City. under 75 Sqm award went to the Midland Austin 7 Club, and the Best stand over 75 sqm stand award was won by the Midget and Sprite Club. Amongst the many other awards, the Best of the Best category for the National Car Club winners were the Volvo Owners Club. The Sporting Bears raised around £7,500 for charity by offering rides out in the countryside round the NEC in a selection of classic and supercars.

At first glance, this might look like a Triumph 2.5 Estate, but look again, It is a 1972 Del Lines Triumph Stag V8 Estate which was originally Del’s own car. The 2997cc V8 OHC engine produces 145 bhp which gives a top speed of 115 mph, with a 0-60 mph in 11.6 seconds. When new, it cost £3,000.
If you couldn’t afford to buy a real car, there were plenty of models on sale , Here are a selection of racing Porsche 935 models, but you could probably find any car model on the various stands, from racing to classic or supercar.

The classic car sale on Sunday at the Restoration and Classic Car Show saw 69% of the vehicles sold, with a total sales figure of £1.5 million. £174,375. Another vehicle fetching £20,000 more than its lowest estimate was a 1948 Series One Land Rover which sold for £47,250, the highest price for a Series One in recent years. A further Land Rover sold for a new World record price, the historically important and rare 1950 Land Rover Series 1 Station Wagon with coachwork by Tickford sold for £38,250. The cheapest vehicle which sold was a 1983 Rover 2600 SD1 which was in need of recommissioning and a full service as it has been off the road for several years, which sold for £1,237. Another bargain which required some attention was a 1998 BMW 840 Ci Sport, powered by a 4.4 litre V8 engine. The car has been unused since 2011 when the MOT stated it had completed 141,206 miles. It was recommended that some recommissioning work before being restored to road use and sold for £2,813. A couple of Jaguar Sports cars needing restoration work both sold. The 1951 Jaguar XK120 Roadster was in original condition and was ideal for a full restoration programme. It sold for £36,000, while a 1948 Land Rover Series 1 Sold for £47,250

1968 Jaguar E-Type Series II Roadster, which had a lot of the mechanical parts restored after a 20 year storage, and was mainly cosmetic to finish off the paint and bodywork, went for £41,624 Among the more unusual cars was a 1972 Citroen ID ‘DSuper 5’ which looked in very good condition and sold for £16,594. An immaculate 1972 De Tomaso Pantera powered by a 7.3 litre Ford V8 engine failed to sell, along with a 1999 Honda NSX and a classic 1960 Ford Thunderbird Convertible. However, the unusual wedge shaped 1985 Aston Martin Lagonda sold for £73,125 and the not so common 1987 Ferrari 412i sold for £50,625 and the ultimate 50s 1959 American Cadillac 62 Sedan with its large fins and lots of chrome fetched £23,625.

The opening round of the British Rally Championship kicked off on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th March 2016 in the snowy forests of Mid Wales, with HQ based in Newtown. Using stages that form part of Wales Rally GB, the event proved to be a real test to the start of everyone’s campaign this year. On Saturday evening there were two stages in the dark, the snow and ice making a hard challenge to the event and season. Elfyn Evans and Craig Parry, in the R5 Fiesta, leaded with nearly 18 sec ahead on the Friday evening although this was closing as he April 2016

struggled with being the first car on the road in the snow and slush. Fredrik Ahlin, in another R5 Fiesta, pushed Elfyn all the way and started closing the gap on Sweet Lamb, these two had previously battled in WRC2 in Sweden. Tom Cave and David Bogie, in a Skoda R5, were having a battle of their own however Cave managed to secure third place, even dropping to fourth following a puncture, and David Bogie suffered mechanical issues later on in the rally leaving him back in fourth place. The whole event was a success and all crews appeared to enjoy the challenging conditions and spectators flocked to the stages and enjoyed some amazing views especially across Pikes Peak with the wind turbines spinning in the backdrop. A dull day at Donington couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the BTCC grid or the guardians of the place itself. With capacity grids, the 2016 BTCC is officially full and all thirty two TOCA BTCC Licenses taken. Furthermore, new technical partnerships ensures NGTC “2” adopts upgraded control chassis and suspension components from RML Group and engines from Swindon engines. Together with revised weight penalties, a reduction in lap times is the aim across the thirty race programme. Only two chassis and five © Mick Herring engines remain from 2015. Eleven marques are represented and Subaru have chosen to promote their Levorg model (hopefully not an accronym) as a full manufacturer effort alongside Honda and MG. Yuasa Honda welcomed the return of a former longterm sponsor, Halfords, retaining reigning champion Gordon Shedden April 2016
and 2011 winner Matt Neal plus Andy Neate. Many new combinations and car liveries were revealed in the pit lane unveiling, none more spectacular than Yuasa Halfords Racing, with a screen reliving the championships won by Team Dynamics before Matt Neal’s 2006 winning Halfords Honda Integra replica burst through, followed by its three cars, brand new last year and raced before the model was even launched. Their engines are produced by Neil Brown. Five former champions are included for 2016, Subaru Team BMR fielding Jason Plato and Colin Turkington together with team boss Warren Scott and Guitarist/musician James Cole in its four car team. The Subaru was unable to run today due to an engine mounting mis-match but is due to test this week and the Kelvin Fletcher Racing driver who acts remaining cars are nearly complete. Motor racing has always attracted celebrity drivers and, Kelvin Fletcher (of Emmerdale fame) joins Hunter Abbott in the Power Maxed Chevrolet Cruze team. Kelvin, described by commentator Alan Hyde, ” as a racing driver who does a bit of acting”, is no stranger to racing since his 2012 debut in Minis, through Porsche GT3 and VdeV is determined not to just make up the numbers.

Matt Neal in the Honda Civic Type R set the mark at 1m 10.410 seconds just before the final flag, beating Sutton’s time by nearly a tenth of a second. His team mate, Josh Cook took the other MG to fifth spot, an impressive performance considering neither of the young drivers had driven the car previously. Another impressive performance was given by Rob Austin in the Handy Motorsport Toyota, who had initially topped the time sheets before finishing in third place. Proving that the Toyota Avensis is on the pace, Tom Ingram set the fourth fastest time for Speedworks Motorsport. Sixth and seventh fastest times went to the Eurotech Racing pair of Martin Depper and Jeff Smith, while Adam Morgan in the Wix Racing Mercedes was eighth.The final two places in the top ten went to Mat Jackson in the Motorbase Perforce Ford Focus in ninth and Sam Tordoff in the West Surrey Racing BMW was tenth. Reigning Champion Gordon Shedden in the Honda Civic Type R and former champion Andrew Jordon in the Pirtek Racing Ford Focus were both outside the top ten. Page 38

The East Midlands Alfa Romeo Owners Club held a meeting at Millennium Place, outside Coventry Transport Museum, on Easter Sunday. The dry, if slightly overcast day, saw a good turnout of members with an interesting selection of vehicles which drew a lot of attention to the public, many of whom were attending the Coventry Transport Museum as an Easter treat. Many of the cars on display were newer models, which look stylish and still retain that Alfa Romeo elegance of design and all feature the classic Alfa Romeo distinctive radiator grill design. There were several classic gems amongst the more modern saloon and hatchback models, including a 1970 April 2016
Left Hand Drive 1290cc Alfa Romeo Giulia 1300 Ti. This was a more traditional three box design saloon which was common at the time. The traditional front engine, rear wheel drive design featured a 1290cc twin cam engine with a single down draught carburettor which produced 81 HP and was similar to the engine fitted to the sportier GT 1300 Junior Coupe, but with different camshaft timing (but the same camshaft) and different induction systems. With a 5 speed gearbox, the car was capable of achieving 99 mph. Next to it was a 1972 1962cc Alfa Romeo 2000, which although was a similar 3 box design, and showed improvements on the earlier model, with a different designed Page 40
front grill with twin headlights, and of course, the traditional Alfa Romeo Grill design. It is interesting to note that these two Alfa Romeo had the word Milano on the bottom of the Alfa Romeo badge, which none of the other cars on display featured. Alfa Romeo has always built a range of saloons and sports cars, and flanking the main entrance to the museum were a pair of the latest Alfa Romeo 4C sports cars, one in white and the other in traditional Alfa Romeo Italian Red. Both cars on display were roadsters with the soft removable roof section to offer open top driving pleasure, weather permitting. The 4C was introduced in 2013 and is built in Modena at the Maserati plant. It is a 1.75 litre turbocharged sports car with a transverse mid engine, rear wheel drive configuration through a six speed gearbox. It uses a carbon fibre tub with a hybrid front and rear subframe made from mainly aluminium to help reduce weight. It uses double wishbone suspension on the front and April 2016
MacPherson struts at the rear and uses different size wheels front and rear. To save weight and improve feel at high speed, the car is not fitted with power steering. The 4 cylinder aluminium 1.75 litre turbocharged engine produces 240 HP and can propel this pocket rocket to 160 mph, doing 0-62 mph in just 4.5 seconds. If you switch to race mode, it will take just 4.2 seconds. It is the first mass produced Alfa Romeo to enter the American market in recent times. Production is aimed at 2500 vehicles a year. Other notable models on display included a stunning red Alfa Romeo Montreal This 2+2 Coupe designed sportscar was manufactured in Turin by Bertone between 1970 and 1977. Powered by a 2.6 litre dry-sump lubricated V8 fuel injected engine which produced 197 HP. The power goes through a 5 speed ZF gearbox with a limited slip differential on a live rear axle. Double wishbone front suspension with coil spring and dampers enable excellent handling. The car had a top speed of 137 mph and does 0-62 Page 41
mph in just 7.4 seconds. The car has a couple of unusual design features. There are unusual grills above the four headlights, which retract when the lights are activated. The bonnet features a NACA duct which is actually blocked, since its purpose is not to draw air in to the engine, but to hide the power bulge in the bonnet. When launched in the UK at ÂŁ5,077, it cost more than a Jaguar E-Type or a Porsche 911. The Alfa Romeo 164 is a four door executive saloon manufactured between 1987 and 1998 which was designed by Pininfarina. The black model at Coventry was a 1989 model which is fitted with a 3 litre V6 engine which produces around 190 BHP. This gave the car a top speed of 140 mph and a 0-62 mph time of 8.1 seconds. It was interesting looking around the cars on display, to see that apart from the more traditional designs of the early 1970s, Alfa Romeo has in more recent years returned to the companies curved and rounded stylish designs that have been part of the marques design philosophies since the beginning, and looking at the 4C sports Car, the future of Alfa Romeo looks very bright indeed. The 2016 Members’ Meeting featured 12 races in total over the two days of the event. Three of the most iconic periods in motorsport history were also celebrated with high-speed demonstration runs – the Super Touring cars of the 1990s, ground effect Formula 1 cars and Group 5 sports cars of the 1970s. The 74th edition of the sell- out and very memorable Goodwood Members Meeting is over for another year. The 33,000 visitors on-site over the Page 44

Members’ Meeting weekend were treated to some real edge-of-the-seat competition, with close wheel-to-wheel racing. The live Members’ Meeting streaming feed proved especially popular too, with enthusiastic comments being posted from all around the world, including a couple who stayed awake for two consecutive nights to watch the qualifying and racing from their home in New Zealand. Along with the now-established Gerry Marshall Trophy race at the Members’ Meeting for 1970-82 Group 1 saloon cars, the 74th Goodwood meeting introduced a number of new races and competition vehicles to the event. These included the S.F. Edge Trophy for Edwardian specials of a type that raced up

until 1923, with Duncan Pittaway’s tiny 1921 GN Curtiss beating the giant 1923 Delage DH V12 of second-placed Mattias Sielecki. raced between 1970 – was won by Ian Simpson on a 1979 Yamaha TZ350E, with Richard Parker (1981 Spondon Yamaha TZG) taking second, and Dean Stimpson (Harris Yamaha TZG) third. In Sunday’s close-fought Derek Bell Cup race for 1964-70 Formula 3 cars, Andrew Hibbard (1966 Brabham-Ford BT16) took the laurels, followed by Peter Thompson (1968 Brabham- Ford BT21) and Jim Blockley (1970 Chevron-Ford B17) on the podium. James Cottingham won the Graham Hill Trophy for 1960-66 GT cars in a Shelby American Cobra Daytona coupe, chased by Andrew Smith in second in another Cobra Daytona, and Rob Hall in third in an AC Cobra. William Nuthall took victory in the Parnell Cup for Grand Prix, Formula 2 and voiturette cars that raced up to 1953 in a 1953 Cooper-Bristol Mk 2, with Eddie McGuire taking second (1952 Cooper-Bristol Mk 1) and Marc Valverkens (1952 Gordini Type 16) third. Ford Lotus Cortinas took a 1-2-3 in the Whitmore Cup race for sub 2-litre saloons, with Richard Meaden taking a comfortable victory over Mark Sumpter and John Young. The final race of the weekend was the Peter Collins Trophy for 1948-55 drum-braked sports cars, with Sam Hancock taking a decisive win in a

Guests also enjoyed the sight of Group 5 sports cars – including a record gathering of Ferrari 512s and Porsche 917s – plus some of the iconic Super Touring tin-top saloon racers from the halcyon days of BTCC. The official timing partner of the Members’ Meeting - IWC Schaffhausen – also staged a very special celebration display of three significant Mercedes-Benz ‘Silver Arrows’ racer, with F1 legends Mika Hakkinen and Jochen Mass driving demonstrating laps in the W196s.

Jack Coveney leads the Locost field in race 1
The 750 Motor club started their 2016 racing season at home, as their office is based at Donington Park. The two day meeting covered the majority of the racing series organised by the club and gave competitors the opportunity to start the season in style round the national circuit. First out of the starting blocks were the Tegiwa BMW M3 Cup runners which were combined with the Super Cooper Cup Mini’s. Brian Chandler took Pole position in his BMW E46 M3 but it was Adam Shepherd who April 2016
took the first victory from Chandler with Mark Anderson 3rd. Will Sharpe took the Super Cooper victory in 10th overall ahead of Stephen Rose and Caroline Gilbert. They were out again later in the day for race 8 on the programme when Shepherd again took victory ahead of Luke Sedzikowski and Anderson. Sharpe and Rose were 1st and 2nd again in the Super Cooper Cup, while Martyn Rose took 3rd. The Locost Championship offers some of the closest racing in Page 49
However in the first race he was beaten by Matt Rozier in his Peugeot 205 GTi, while Edward Cooper finished 3rd in a Vauxhall Nova Gsi. The second race saw Scott reverse the race one result to beat Rozier by just 0.16 of a second. Matthew Stubington in a Peugeot 205 GTi finished 3rd on the road, but was penalised 10 seconds for jumping the start, which dropped him down to 6th, allowing Andrew Thorpe in a Citroen AX GTi to take 3rd place.
Adam Shepherd BMW E46 M3 won the M3 Cup race

Jack Coveney took pole position but could only manage 6th place in their first race. Ian Allee took victory from Danny Andrew and Richard Bradley. In the second race later in the day, Alee could only manage 3rd while Andrew went one better to take the win while Tim Neat took a very close 2nd, just 0.45 of a second behind Andrew, with all three covered by just 0.72 of a second. The Demon Tweeks Yokohama Classic Stock Hatch championship for retro hatchbacks sold prior to January 1992 with 1400cc multivalve engines or 1600cc 2 valve per cylinder engines, saw Lee Scott on Pole position in his Ford Fiesta XR2i.

The Premier Choice Group 750 Formula Championship for sports-prototype racing cars with an offset driving position and small passenger space. They are powered by the Fiat 1108cc ‘Fire’ engine to keep costs down. Ed Pither grabbed pole position in the PRS 1b and went on to win the first race by nearly 14 seconds from Robin Gearing in a Darvi P88 and Bill Cowley in a Cowley Mk IV. At the start it was (3) which grabbed the lead from (85) with (1) in third, as the first three rounded Redgate as Page 50
out just after the start of the race along with the other Fiestas of David Allen and Alistair Camp. This left the race to Matthew Howarth in his Vauxhall Astra GSi who finished over 8 seconds ahead of Neil Stringfellow in a Peugeot 205 GTi and Paul Jarvis in a Citroen Saxo VTR. The second race on Sunday saw the Fiestas back in action, with Bell winning from Camp with Howarth in 3rd place.

pursued by 3 BMWs. After 30 minutes Marston and Evans were back in front with Neville Anderson and Allan Gibson BMW M3/ Lotus Exige in 2nd and the Honda back to 3rd. At half distance, after an hour, it was Leighton Norris in front, solo driving a Toyota Super GT only 11 seconds ahead of the Caterham 7 of Paul Aram and Rui Ferreira and the Mazda RX8 of Liam Crilly and Jonny Macgregor was in 3rd. At 90 minutes it was Ben Demetriou and Jonathan Evans in a Porsche 968 who were 6 seconds in the lead from the Anderson and Gibson BMW M3 and the Marston and Evans BMW E46 M3 and this remained the pole position in the AHS Dominator and took an eight second victory ahead of Graham Gant in a WEV FV01 in race One. Craig Pollard was 3rd in Bears GAC. Smith was also victorious in race two, but this time ahead of John Hughes in a Scarab Mk5 and James Harridge in a Maverick Vee.
Enduro race winner Demetriou/Evans Porsche 968 leads the Anderson/Gibson BMW M3
order to the chequered flag, with the Porsche opening up a 48 second lead by the end of the two hours. After the endurance race it was time for the single seater racing cars to take centre stage. The Ravenol Formula Vee championship is for single seater racing cars without wings or other aerodynamic aids and powered by the 1300cc air cooled VW type engine which produces around 85 bhp. The cars also use standard VW suspension components. The front is VW axle, hub, stub axle and torsion bar and the rear uses the majority of VW rear suspension components. Paul Smith took April 2016
Sunday saw a few additional fields join the race programme. The Toyota MR2 Championship started proceedings on Sunday, with the first of three races. The first race was won by Kristian White from Pole position, narrowly beating Jim Davies by just 0.73 of a second, with Michael Wells in third place. The second race saw Jim Davies take an even closer win by just 0.34 of a second from Alex White and Cam Walton. The third race was the last race of the day on Sunday and saw White back to his winning ways with a huge 4 second lead at the end over 2nd place Ben Rowe, with Page 52

The Armed Forces Challenge race on Sunday allowed racers from all across the Armed Forces to compete on a level playing field irrespective of car performance by awarding consistency during the race. Andrew Stacey was fastest in practice in his Mini Cooper S, but in the race it was James Williams in a BMW M3 that was awarded the win from Darren Howe in a VW Golf and Ed McKean in a BMW 325i after Stacey retired after just 2 laps of the race.

As if the world's quickest septuagenarian was not enough to deal with, Smith's latest protégé, 21-year-old Tom Alexander from Christchurch, also made his presence felt in his debut races in the F5000 category today. After sitting out both practice/ qualifying sessions on Friday with a migraine, Robson stormed through the 26-strong pack from the back row in the first race to cross the finish line in seventh place behind fellow Melbournite Zazryn and fellow T330 driver Peter Brennan. He then made it from seventh to fourth in the second race…...in a car with its own Ken Smith story. Smith enjoyed considerable success in the car in period and 40 years ago last month scored one of his most memorable victories on Australian soil, beating local hero and former F1 driver Vern Schuppan to victory in the Rothmans International Series round at Adelaide International Raceway. And what about the other storied 73-year-old competing in the MSC F5000 class races at Phillip Island, four-time former Australian Drivers' Champion, Alfredo (Alfie) Costanzo? He qualified the Alan Hamilton-owned McLaren M10B 12th and finished the first race in that position but was a non-starter in the second race after breaking a rocker in the first. With Smith attending to business up front the battle for second Kiwi MSC series regular home in both races was between Lola T332 drivers Russell Greer from Blenheim and Ian Clements from Christchurch. Napier driver Sefton Gibb was also part of a strong mid-field battle pack in his Lola T332 with the three Kiwi Talons MR1s of David Banks, Aaron Burson and Grant Martin. Banks struggled with a gear selection issue in the first race, having to start from pit lane and culminating in a lurid spin at Lukey Heights, while Grant Martin lost control of his car in the second race and grazed the barriers between turns two and three, fortunately only doing superficial damage. The second Class A car home was also a McLaren, the crowd favourite high-wing M10A driven by Kiwi category stalwart Tony Roberts. In the final in the afternoon, a race generally agreed to be one of the best in the 12-year history if the MSC series, the main interest was in whether Tom Tweedie could take back the spot from Berryman. The Sydneysider definitely tried, setting the race's fastest lap (1:28:5277) as he poked and probed for a gap, but Berryman had every option covered, even as - late in the race - the pair encountered lapped traffic. Russell Greer enjoyed another strong run in sixth in front of the mid-field battle pack of Sefton Gibb, David Banks, Peter Brennan, and Ian Clements, then the closely dicing Darcy Russell and Aaron Burson, and Alfie Costanzo and Glenn Richards. Kicking off the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship, the Melvyn Evans Tour of Epynt rally took place on 13th March on the famous and unforgiving Epynt Ranges with HQ based in Llandovery.

To everyone’s relief, the day dawned with dry roads and the prospect of sunshine for most of the day. The days weather was pleasant with intermittent sunshine a contrast to last weeks snow and icy conditions on the Mid Wales Stages not far away. Cole led after stage one but Simpson took the lead after stage two and held it for the rest of the day, despite an engine fire at the finish of the penultimate stage. Cole felt high tyre pressures affected him on stage two and a change of tyres and damper settings improved matters. Mauger also changed tyres after a slippery run on stage two, dropping to third

Adrian Spencer and Mark Hewitt took fourth place in another Subaru Impreza WRC. In fifth place Eian Pritchard with Steve McPhee entered in the Focus WRC that son Jason has won on the Manx National Rally in both 2014 & 2015. A late evening email from SRO promising a world-wide exclusive ensured plenty of photographers populated Snetterton's pit lane early next morning. Unveiling the brand new McLaren 570S ahead of its GT4 debut certainly brightened a cold, overcast day and heralded our first chance to witness a host of new cars, drivers or teams looking to advance their profile and see familiar faces returning. For some, today would be the first opportunity to drive their new cars. Later, in the press conference chaired jointly by MSVR boss Jonathan Palmer and SRO's Stephane Ratel, British GT emphasised the importance of GT4, not only here, but worldwide and McLaren GT managing director, Andrew Kirkaldy, said that McLaren viewed racing as a major part of the April 2016
570S road car’s development platform. With seventeen full-season entries confirmed in GT4, 2016 will see not only the new McLaren but also the very vocal Maserati GT MC (in the hands of Abbie Eaton) and Porsche’s Cayman GT4 Clubsport battling the resident Aston Martin, Ginetta, Lotus and Toyota entries. With eleven manufacturers competing across both classes, GT3 sees © Mick Herring the return of Lamborghini, Bentley, McLaren and Audi.
