Sunday15thJanuaryisexactly110yearssincefounders LionelMartinandRobertBamfordofficiallyformedthe partnershipthatwentontocreatethefirstAstonMartincar. TheMarshalsonthestandwere alsocollectingmoneyforthe ‘RaceAgainstDementia’charity foundedbySirJackieStewart

Ferrarihavecelebratedtheir 30thanniversaryinChina withaone-of-a-kind,tailor madeFerrariRomainspired bytraditionalChinese aesthetics.Thelaunchofthe newtailormadeFerrarimarks 30yearssincethefirstFerrari wasorderedinBeijingin 1992.ItwasforaFerrari 348TS.

whileJade indicatespurity andgentleness. Bothare synonymous withgood wishesand reverence. AbrightanddryNewYearsmorningsawthecrowds descendonStonyStratfordfortheannualVintageStony carshow.Thisyeartheorganisershadenlistedthehelpof theSilverstoneMarshalclubtohelpcontrolthetrafficflow inandaroundthetowncentre.

AsusualtheMarketsquarewastakenoverbyvintagecars andmotorcycles,withamilitaryvehicledisplayonthe outsidecorner.TheHighStreetandshopperscarparks

weregivenovertoclassiccarsandvehiclesofinterest. Therewastheusualoverflowofvehiclesateachendof theHighStreet.

Thevarietyofvehiclesisalwayssurprising,withplentyof carsrepresentingmanufacturersthathavelongago disappearedfromthemarket.Walkingdownthehighstreet isatripdownmemorylanefortheoldergeneration,many seeingcarsthattheirparentsmayhaveownedduringtheir childhood.

1967ChevroletCamaro

ThefirstunusualvehicleontheHighStreetwasaMini Scamp.ThisisaMinibasedkitcarinspiredbytheMini MokeandproducedbyAndrewMacLeanandtheScamp MotorCompanyinWestSussex.TheMk1MiniScampwas builtin1969,justbeforeBMCstoppedproductionofthe MiniMoke.

TheScampbodyandchassisismadefromasteel,square tube,boxsectionframefittedwithaluminiumpanels.An originalMiniisusedtoprovidetheengine,gearboxand runninggear,utilisingthefrontandrearsubframe assemblesfromtheoriginalcar.Thisisavanbutitwas alsoavailableasapickuporestateversion. AMk2versionfollowedin1978whichhadasquarerbody andstrongerchassisanddidnotusetheoriginalMinirear subframe.ThefinalversionwastheMk3whichappearedin 1988.

AlsoknownastheModel40,whichsucceededtheModel A.TheV8enginewasusedfrom1933intheprevious Model18version.IthadthenewflatheadV8engineand theModel18wasthefirstlow-priced,mass-marketedcar tohaveaV8engine.The3.2litre(221cuin)V8engine produced65HP,whichincreasedto75HPby1933witha revisedignitionsystem.Theoverallcardesignwas inspiredbytheEnglishFordModelYincludingthecurved frontgrill.Streamliningwasaccentuatedbyanewbonnet, givingtheimpressionofmorelength.Ithadamore roundedwingsoverthewheelsandabowedbumperon thefrontandrear.Thecaralsofeaturedanewdashboard withinstrumentsinanovalinsertinfrontofthedriver.

PoweredbyaRoverV8engineatthefront,forroaduse.At therearisa1,000bhpRollsRoyceGemjetenginefroma Lynxhelicopter.Withtheafterburnerignited,thetrikeis capableofatheoretical 200mph.However,itis illegaltousethe afterburneronthepublic highway.Whenthe afterburnerisengaged,it consumes5gallonsof fuel;aminuteandshoots flame3feetlongfromthe rear.Ithasthree22inch alloywheelstokeepiton thegroundandalarge rearspoilerfordownforce athigh-speed.

BasedinMilan,Italy,InnocentioriginallybuiltLambretta scooters.Theythenswitchedtobuildingcars.From1961 to1976theybuilttheBMCMiniunderlicense,thenfrom 1973theyincludedtheAllegro,knownastheRegentin Italy.In1972theywereboughtoutbyBritishLeyland. TheInnocentiCwasacoupedesignbasedontheAustin HealeySpritechassisandrunninggear.Itismorethanjust arebodiedSprite.Itisanall-steelbodywhichislowerand widerwithmoreinteriorspace.Thedesign,byAmerican TomTjaarda,washisfirstcompletecardesignafterarriving atGhiaandwasfirstusedontheInnocenti950Spider. SergioSartorellirevisedthedesignwithafixedroofto createtheCmodel.Thiscarhasthe1098ccASeries engineandgearboxbutotherpartsareofItalian manufacture,suchaselectricsbyMarelliandInstruments byVeglia.TheoriginalSpritewheelsandhubcapshave beenreplacedwithwiderMinilitewheels.

BuiltbytheStanleyMotorCarriageCompanyinAmerica between1902and1924.TwinsFrancisE.Stanleyand FreelanOStanleybuilttheirfirstcarin1897.Between 1898and1899theyproducedandsoldover200cars, morethananyotherUScarmaker.

TheearlyStanleycarshadwoodenbodiesmountedona tubularsteelframewithfullellipticsprings.Steamwas producedbyaverticalfiretubeboiler,mountedbeneath theseat,withavaporisinggasolineburnerunderneath. ThiswaslaterreplacedbyaKeroseneburner.Theboilers weresafesincetheywerefittedwithsafetyvalves. Theenginehadtwodoubleactingcylinders,sidebyside withside-valves.Drivewasdirectfromthecrankshafttoa rearmounteddifferentialusingachain.Thismodelhada frontmountedsteamboiler.Theengineproduced10hp, withalargerengineavailablewhichproduced20hp.

AStanleySteamersettheWorldrecordforthefastestmile inanautomobilein1906inatimeof28.2secondsanda speedof127mph.WinneroftheLadiesChoiceaward.

ThiswastheoriginalJaguarMk1thatcompetedinthe 1958RallyeMonte-Carlo,drivenbyFrankBrown,EdwinJ SnusherandGrahamArnold.TheMk1wasthefirstJaguar withunitaryconstructionofthechassisandbody.The3.4 litreenginewasintroducedin1957andproduced190bhp. Thisgaveitatopspeedof120mphandcouldaccelerate from0-60mphin9seconds.Thismadeitpopularfor motorsport.Therewasnodirectworksinvolvementin rallying,butprivateersweresooninvolved.

ThiscarwasorderedbygarageownerFrankBrownto competeinthe1958MonteCarloRally.Itcameequipped withtheoptionaloverdrive,discbrakes,wirewheelsand lead-bronzebottom-endbearingshells.Unfortunatelythe carwasretiredfromtherallyafteranoff-roadexcursion whichdamagedthefrontsuspension.Brownusedthecar inhillclimbsandsprintsthroughout1959beforesellingthe cartoSnusher.Heuseditforthe1960MonteCarloand TulipRallies.

TheFiat850Spiderwasintroducedin1965,thesametime astheCoupeversion.Ithadtheoriginal843ccengine tunedtoproduce49hp.Thisgaveitatopspeedof90 mph.ThebodywasdesignedandbuiltbyBertoneinits Grugliasco,Turinplant.TheBertonedesignfeatures smooth,simplelinesanddetails.Theseincluderecessed headlights,whichoriginallywerebehindaperspexcover. Thefoldingfabrichoodisstoredunderarearmetalbody panel.

In1968itwasrevisedandcalledtheSportSpiderwitha morepowerful903ccenginewhichdeveloped52hp.The headlightsweremovedforwardandlosttheextraglass covers.Theoriginalflushfrontindicatorlightswere replacedwithunitshungbelowthefrontbumper.Two specialeditionswerealsoavailable,theRacerwhich featuredabodycolouredmetalhardtopandtheRacer Berlinettawhichfeaturedablackvinylhardtop.

TheBirminghamSmallArms(BSA)companyisprobably bestknownformakingmotorcycles.Buttheyalsomade over6,6503wheeledTrikesfrom1930to1935.Powered bya1021ccaircooledV-twinenginewhichproduced9hp, itdrovethefronttwowheelswiththetransmissionmounted infrontoftheengine.Thecompanyintroducedmany innovationssuchasreversegear,electricstartandfull weatherprotection.Thetwinrailframehadawoodenbody mountedtoitandcoveredwithleathertokeeptheweight under800pounds.Thisallowedittobetaxedasa motorcycleratherthananautomobile.

WiththelastAutosportInternationalshowtakingplacein 2020,theshowfinallyreturnedtotheNECafteratwoyear breakduetothe pandemic.The showwassmaller thaninprevious years,usingHalls2 and3,withthe Engineeringshow runningonthetwo tradedaysof Thursdayand Friday.The motorsportindustry generatesalotof incomeforthis country,withmany smallandhighly skilledcompanies producing everythingfrom enginesand

gearboxesthroughtosuspensioncomponents,fittingsand fixings,pluseverythingelserequiredtobuildsomeofthe greatestracingandrallycarsintheWorld.

Overtheweekend,theEngineeringshowwasreplacedby grassrootsmotorsport.Thiscoverseverythingfromsmall ovalracing,throughgrasstrackracing,clubrallyingand rallycross,plusmoreobscureeventslikeTractorpulling.

Sotheydecidedtodesignandbuildthereowntransaxle. TheystartedwithFordZephyrMk4gears,aFordV8crown wheelandpinionandFordZephyroutputshafts,Howard rotaryhoequickchangegearsandaMinioilumpto pressurefeedtheoiltothegears.Theyassembleditinto acastaluminiumhousing.

TheCatGenproducesextremelylowemissionsandcan runoncarbonneutralfuels,removingtheneedforfossil fuelsaltogether,thoughitcanrunonanyfuelwithminor modifications.ThedevelopershaveCatGensinstalledin twoFordTransitPHEVsforlongtermtestsandwhilein chargesustainingcycles,they’reseeingNOxemissions only3%oftheEuro6limitsforanICETransitvan.Quite remarkable.

ThefirstCoffee&ChromeCollectivemeetingoftheyear tookplaceoutsidetheChateauImpneyHotelinthe groundsoftheImpneyEstate.Theentryforthiswinter meetingwaslimitedtoaround250vehicles,whichallowed allthevehiclestobeparkedonhardstandingtarmac.The companyhaveinstigatedanewbookinginsystemforthe invitedattendance,whichappearedtoworkverywell.

Theweather wascoldbutdry andcloudyfor themajorityof themeeting, withthesun makingan appearance mid-morning. Asusualfor thesemeetings thevarietyof vehicleswas

impressiveandtherewas aniceselectionoffood anddrinktradestands providingrefreshmentsat reasonableprices. Theearlyarrivalsgotthe primeparkingspotsdown thesideandacrossthe frontofthehotel,which offerssomefantastic photoopportunitiesof includingtheFrench styledChateauImpney hotelinthebackground.

Thisyear,or shouldwenow say,“lastyear”,it wasgoodtosee somanyyounger facesandnew competitorsinthe

noviceclass. Organisers wereveryglad toseethisand commented thatwiththe terrainbeing forgiving,itwas hopedthenew first-time entrantswould soonbecome regularsonthe trialcalendar.

Withthereducedentrynumbersthestarttimefortheevent wasputbackto10.00am,noexcusetonothaveahot drinkandbaconrollfromtheon-sitecatering,awelcome

benefittothevenue.

Onthedaytheweatherwasbrightwiththeoddsunnyspell butacoldwind.Thehillsinthetreesbeingnoticeably colderthansomeoftheothers.Itwaspointedouttous severaltimesbytheteamwhosetupthehillstheday beforehowbadtherainwasforthem,manythanksto them!Apartfromthepuddlesontheflatareasatthetopof thevenue,youwouldnothaveknownithadbeenthatbad. Eachhillwouldbedriventwiceinthemorning,thentwice againintheafternoon.Astop-startbeingaddedtosomeof thehillsfortheafternoonruns.

Itwasinterestinghowseveralofthehillsweremore “technical”,meaningitwasnotacaseofspeedwillgetyou tothefinish.Tightturnsalongthehillmadeforsomevery carefuldrivingbeingrequired,especiallyforthe“bigger” cars.TwothatcometomindbeingtheFordModelAbeing drivenbyRussellWebster,whounfortunatelywithdrew beforethesecondrunsintheafternoon.Theotherbeing

TheenhancedJazze:HEVretainstheresponsiveand

highlyefficientadvancedhybridtechnology.Thelatest generatione:HEVpowertraincomprisesoftwoelectric motors,aneconomicalpetrolengineconnectedtoan automatictransmissionwiththreeintelligentdrivingmodes. Theelectricmotorshavereceiveda10kWincrease,giving itatotaloutputof90kW(120bhp).Thegeneratormotor hasreceivedanincreaseof8kW,takingittoapeakof78 kW(104bhp).Finallythe1.5litreport-injectionenginehas gaineda7kWincreasetoproduceamaximumof105bhp. Torqueremainsat131NmandthehybridCO2emissions arefrom102g/kmwiththeAdvancedSportGradefrom 105g/km.
