NewRadicalSR3XXRlaunched.

Theall-newRadicalSR3XXRimprovesonthecurrentSR3 withimprovedperformance,usabilityanddurabilitywhile retainingtheessenceofwhatmakestheSR3themost successfulprototypesportsracingcarintheWorld.The SR3makesupthemajorityofthegridsinthe12Radical CupchampionshipsaroundtheWorld,withover1,500sold todate.

Themajorchangeistheall-newengine,builtin-houseby RadicalPerformanceEngines(RPE).The1500ccengine produces232bhpandinthelightweightSR3XXRwill produceapowertoweightratioofover350hppertonne.It isalsoabletorunonbiofuel.

IthasbeendesignedtobemoreagileontrackwithaLMPinspiredcentraltail‘sharkfin’whichimprovesaerodynamic stabilityonentryandinmid-corner.Acarbonfibresplitter andreardiffuserareavailableasanoptiontoimprove aerodynamicsontrack.Anewcoolingsetupsignificantly reduceswarminguptime.

SixdrivershavebeenannouncedbyFerrariforthepairofFerrari499PcarsenteredintheFIAWorldEnduranceChampionship (WEC).ReigningLMGTEProWorldChampionsAlessandroPierGuidifromItalyandBritishdriverJamesCaladowillbejoinedby AntonioGiovinazzifromItalyintheNo.51Ferrari.Thesistercar,No.50,willbedrivenbyItalianAntonioFuoco,SpaniardMiguel MolinaandNicklasNielsenfromDenmark.

Hennesseyunveilstrack-focusedVenomF5RevolutionHypercar. TheTexasbasedhypercarmanufacturerhasunveiledanewlighterweight,track-focusedversionoftheHennesseyVenomF5.Ithasbeen comprehensivelyre-engineeredforincreasedagility,improvedhandling andhighdownforce.Theobviousdifferenceistherearmounted,full width,adjustablecarbonfibrewing,whichprovides1,400lbsforceat 249mph.

Itispoweredbyamid-mountedtwin-turbocharged6.6litre‘Fury’V8 powertrain,producing1,817bhp,calibratedforcompetitiveuse.It drivestherearwheelsthroughaautomaticsingleclutchgearbox,again calibratedforcompetitiveuse.Asuiteoftrack-focusedenhancements includeaerodynamicenhancements,retunedsuspension,newwheels, aroofmountedairintakeanddigitaltracktelemetry. EvocarmagazinehasawardeditsprestigiousCarofthe Year2022awardtotheMaseratiMC20sportscar.The expertjudgingpanelfoundtheMaseratifoughtoffstrong competitionandalsowonpraiseforbeinga‘carperson’s car’,deliveringexcitementandemotioninspades,handling atallspeeds,aperfectrecipeforbeingabrilliantdriver’s car.

TheMC20israce-inspiredwithboththeCoupéandCielo poweredbythenewmid-mountedNettuno3litretwinturbo V6enginederivedfromF1.Itproduces630hpand730Nm torque.ItdrivestherearwheelsthroughaDCT8-Speed gearboxwithamechanicalLimited-SlipDifferential (Electronicversionoptional).Thisgivesitatopspeedof over200mph,witha0-62mphaccelerationtimeof2.9 seconds.

TheMarshalsonthestandwere alsocollectingmoneyforthe ‘RaceAgainstDementia’charity foundedbySirJackieStewart

The Romais powered byafront midmounted 3.8litre turbocharged V8 engine which develops 611bhp and561lb-ftoftorque.Itispairedtoan8-Speeddualclutchautomatictransmissiondrivingtherearwheels.It hasatopspeedof199mphandcanacceleratefrom0-60 mphin3.1seconds,withthestanding¼milein11 seconds.

AsusualtheMarketsquarewastakenoverbyvintagecars andmotorcycles,withamilitaryvehicledisplayonthe outsidecorner.TheHighStreetandshopperscarparks

weregivenovertoclassiccarsandvehiclesofinterest. Therewastheusualoverflowofvehiclesateachendof theHighStreet.

Thevarietyofvehiclesisalwayssurprising,withplentyof carsrepresentingmanufacturersthathavelongago disappearedfromthemarket.Walkingdownthehighstreet isatripdownmemorylanefortheoldergeneration,many seeingcarsthattheirparentsmayhaveownedduringtheir childhood.

ThefirstunusualvehicleontheHighStreetwasaMini Scamp.ThisisaMinibasedkitcarinspiredbytheMini MokeandproducedbyAndrewMacLeanandtheScamp MotorCompanyinWestSussex.TheMk1MiniScampwas builtin1969,justbeforeBMCstoppedproductionofthe MiniMoke.

TheScampbodyandchassisismadefromasteel,square tube,boxsectionframefittedwithaluminiumpanels.An originalMiniisusedtoprovidetheengine,gearboxand runninggear,utilisingthefrontandrearsubframe assemblesfromtheoriginalcar.Thisisavanbutitwas alsoavailableasapickuporestateversion. AMk2versionfollowedin1978whichhadasquarerbody andstrongerchassisanddidnotusetheoriginalMinirear subframe.ThefinalversionwastheMk3whichappearedin 1988.

AlsoknownastheModel40,whichsucceededtheModel A.TheV8enginewasusedfrom1933intheprevious Model18version.IthadthenewflatheadV8engineand theModel18wasthefirstlow-priced,mass-marketedcar tohaveaV8engine.The3.2litre(221cuin)V8engine produced65HP,whichincreasedto75HPby1933witha revisedignitionsystem.Theoverallcardesignwas inspiredbytheEnglishFordModelYincludingthecurved frontgrill.Streamliningwasaccentuatedbyanewbonnet, givingtheimpressionofmorelength.Ithadamore roundedwingsoverthewheelsandabowedbumperon thefrontandrear.Thecaralsofeaturedanewdashboard withinstrumentsinanovalinsertinfrontofthedriver.

PoweredbyaRoverV8engineatthefront,forroaduse.At therearisa1,000bhpRollsRoyceGemjetenginefroma Lynxhelicopter.Withtheafterburnerignited,thetrikeis capableofatheoretical 200mph.However,itis illegaltousethe afterburneronthepublic highway.Whenthe afterburnerisengaged,it consumes5gallonsof fuel;aminuteandshoots flame3feetlongfromthe rear.Ithasthree22inch alloywheelstokeepiton thegroundandalarge rearspoilerfordownforce athigh-speed.

BasedinMilan,Italy,InnocentioriginallybuiltLambretta scooters.Theythenswitchedtobuildingcars.From1961 to1976theybuilttheBMCMiniunderlicense,thenfrom 1973theyincludedtheAllegro,knownastheRegentin Italy.In1972theywereboughtoutbyBritishLeyland. TheInnocentiCwasacoupedesignbasedontheAustin HealeySpritechassisandrunninggear.Itismorethanjust arebodiedSprite.Itisanall-steelbodywhichislowerand widerwithmoreinteriorspace.Thedesign,byAmerican TomTjaarda,washisfirstcompletecardesignafterarriving atGhiaandwasfirstusedontheInnocenti950Spider. Thefoldingfabrichoodisstoredunderarearmetalbody panel.

TheBirminghamSmallArms(BSA)companyisprobably bestknownformakingmotorcycles.Buttheyalsomade over6,6503wheeledTrikesfrom1930to1935.Powered bya1021ccaircooledV-twinenginewhichproduced9hp, itdrovethefronttwowheelswiththetransmissionmounted infrontoftheengine.Thecompanyintroducedmany innovationssuchasreversegear,electricstartandfull weatherprotection.Thetwinrailframehadawoodenbody mountedtoitandcoveredwithleathertokeeptheweight under800pounds.Thisallowedittobetaxedasa motorcycleratherthananautomobile.

modifiedcarandajudgingpanelandthepublicselected theVauxhallAstraVXRownedbySimonKelly.ItwonUK’s TopTunedCarcampaignbyasignificantmargin,with massivesupportfromfollowersofhissocialmedia channels(@skellyvxr).HedecidedtoturnhisAstraVXRin toaracecar-likesportscar.Hehasaddedarearspoiler, sideexitexhaust,airsuspensionandaddedarollcage. Themodifiedengineproduces

400+bhp.Thecompetitionwastocelebratethegrowthof theTuningIndustryinthelasttwodecadesandwas supportedbyFastCarmagazine.

ThefirstCoffee&ChromeCollectivemeetingoftheyear tookplaceoutsidetheChateauImpneyHotelinthe groundsoftheImpneyEstate.Theentryforthiswinter meetingwaslimitedtoaround250vehicles,whichallowed allthevehiclestobeparkedonhardstandingtarmac.The companyhaveinstigatedanewbookinginsystemforthe invitedattendance,whichappearedtoworkverywell.

Theweather wascoldbutdry andcloudyfor themajorityof themeeting, withthesun makingan appearance mid-morning. Asusualfor thesemeetings thevarietyof vehicleswas

TheAustinAllegroreplacedtheverypopularAustin 1100/1300rangeasthesmallfamilycarintheAustinMorrisrange.ItwasbuiltatLongbridgebetween1973and 1982.Intenyearsjustover642,000wereproduced,less thana1/3rdofthe100/1300carssoldintheprevious elevenyears.

ItwaspoweredbythesameAseriesengineasthe previous1100/1300,withadditional1500and1750models poweredbytheSOHCE-SeriesenginefromtheAustin Maxi.IthadthenewHydragassuspensionsystem,a developmentoftheHydrolasticsystemusedonthe 1100/1300range.Itwasfrontwheeldrive,butunlikemost competitorsatthetime,ithadaseparatebootandwasnot ahatchbackdesign.Whenlauncheditwasalsoknowfor havingasquaresteeringwheel,whichwassoonreplaced withamoreconventionroundone.

Thisyear,or shouldwenow say,“lastyear”,it wasgoodtosee somanyyounger facesandnew competitorsinthe

noviceclass. Organisers wereveryglad toseethisand commented thatwiththe terrainbeing forgiving,itwas hopedthenew first-time entrantswould soonbecome regularsonthe trialcalendar.

Onthedaytheweatherwasbrightwiththeoddsunnyspell butacoldwind.Thehillsinthetreesbeingnoticeably colderthansomeoftheothers.Itwaspointedouttous severaltimesbytheteamwhosetupthehillstheday beforehowbadtherainwasforthem,manythanksto them!Apartfromthepuddlesontheflatareasatthetopof thevenue,youwouldnothaveknownithadbeenthatbad. Eachhillwouldbedriventwiceinthemorning,thentwice againintheafternoon.Astop-startbeingaddedtosomeof thehillsfortheafternoonruns.

Itwasinterestinghowseveralofthehillsweremore “technical”,meaningitwasnotacaseofspeedwillgetyou tothefinish.Tightturnsalongthehillmadeforsomevery carefuldrivingbeingrequired,especiallyforthe“bigger” cars.TwothatcometomindbeingtheFordModelAbeing drivenbyRussellWebster,whounfortunatelywithdrew beforethesecondrunsintheafternoon.Theotherbeing
