Withover200carsinattendance,therewasgreatvarietyin bothageandtypesofvehicle,fromvintagecarstomodern vansandeverythinginbetween.. Thevehiclesweresplitintodifferentclassesandjudged forbestinclass,withthe Bestinshowawardgoingto a1959AstonMartinDB MKIIIDHCbelongingtoa MrsJeanMoss.Otheraward winnersincludeda1959MG Asportscarwithapatriotic unionjackflagondisplay. TheAstonMartinDBMkIIIDropHeadCoupewitha specialseriesDBDenginewasoneofonly14builttothis specification.TheDBMkIIIwasthelastmodeloftheDB2 seriesthatwasproducedbetween1949and1959.Only 551oftheMkIIIwerebuiltbetweenMarch1957andJuly 1958,ofwhich84wereDropHeadCoupe’sand5were FixedHeadCoupe’s.Theremainingwereallsaloonswith arearhatch.ThisparticularcarisfittedwithtripleSU carburettors,oneofonlyfourteen.Theyarefittedtoa revisedversionoftheTadekMarek2922ccenginefromthe WillieWatson/WOBentleyDoubleoverheadcamshaft (DOC)enginethatwasoriginallyusedinthe2.6litre Lagonda.Theenginewasofferedinthreedifferent configurations,mainlywithWeberDCOcarburettors,but thetopoftherangewastheDBDwithstandardDBAcams withrevisedcamtiming,highercompressionpistonsand threeH61/72”SUCarbswhichproduced180bhp.The optionaltwinexhaustwasclaimedtoaddanadditional16 bhp.ThecarhasbeenusedbyincompetitionwithJean winningseveralsprintandhillclimbtrophiesinthiscar, usuallyatAMOCevents.Thecarpresentlyproduces235 bhpwithmaximumtorqueof230ilbs-ftoftorquewhich giveitanestimatedtopspeedofaround135mph. ©SimonWright ©SimonWright ©SimonWright

17October2022ClassicandCompetitionCar ClassicandCompetitionCar Probablytheoldestcartherewasa1925Chevrolet SuperiorKwhichhadbeenimportedfromAustralia.The Superiorwaslaunchedin1923astheSeriesB,thenin 1924itbecametheSeriesFandin1925itwastheSeries K.ItwastheonlyChevroletsoldwithdifferentbody configurations,openandclosed,allsuppliedbyFisher Body.ThechassiswassharedwithotherGMproductsfrom Cadillac,Buick,Oldsmobile,OaklandandotherGMC products.Itwaspoweredbya2.8litrefourcylinderengine whichproduced26hpat2000rpm.Itwasattachedtoa3Speedmanualgearbox.Thecheapestmodelwasthe SuperiorRoadsterwhichcost$510in1926,whilethemost expensivewastheSuperiorSedanwhichsoldfor$825. During1925atotalofover444,500wereproduced. JumpforwardtenyearsandmoveacrosstheAtlanticand youhavethe1936AustinSherborne.Thiscarwasonly producedbetweenJanuaryandAugust1936at Longbridge,witharound8700built.Itwasbasedonthe Austin10Lichfield,usingthesamechassis,engineand manybodyparts.The1125ccsidevalveengineproduced 10RACHorsepower.Itwasbuiltwithasun-roof,leather seatsandwasalsoequippedwithdirectionindicators,for anoriginalpriceof£178.Itisthoughtthatlessthan40 currentlysurvive.

L-Headengine whichproduced109bhp at3600rpm.Thiswas connectedtotheFluid Drivetransmission,which replacedtheflywheelwith ahydrauliccouplingwhich thenhadaclutchand3Speedmanualgearbox drivingtherearwheels. Theclutchwasstill requiredtochangegear, buttheFluidDrivepreventedthe carfromstallingwhenstarting fromrestandalsomeantthatthe carcouldcometoastopinany gearwithoutusingtheclutchand thenallowthecartostartagain, evenintopgear,without changinggearorusingtheclutch. ItwasbuiltatCowleybetween1982and1984andonlyjust over43,000werebuilt.Accordingtorecordsonly23remain ontheroadtoday.ThepreviousPrincessmodellackeda hatchbackdesign,andalthoughthetwomodelslooked verysimilar,onlythedoorsandtheinnerstructurewere carriedoverfromthePrincess.Poweredbyeithera1.7litre or2litreOSeriesfourcylinderengine.Itwasavailablein threetrimlevels,LHLandHLS.TheHLSandalater VandenPlasversionwerefittedwithtwinSUcarburettors onthe2litreengine.In1983theHLversionwasalso updatedtotwincarburettors.A4-Speedmanualgearbox wasusedonallmodels,withtheoptionofa3-Speed Automatic.Manyothercomponentsweresharedwitheither theMorrisItalortheAustinAllegro,includingmuchofthe interiortrim. 1936HillmanMinx. TherehavebeenmanydifferentversionsoftheHillman Minxoveritsthirtynineyearlifecycle.The1936model wasaredesignofthepreviousmodelwithamorerounded body.ItwasgiventhenametheMinxMagnificent.The enginewasmovedfurtherforwardinthechassistogive morepassengerroom.Itwaspoweredbya1185cc4 cylinderengineproducingaround30bhp.In1935theMinx wasfittedwith4-Speedmanualgearboxwithsynchromesh onallforwardgears,thefirstmassproducedcarwithanall synchromeshgearbox.Therearofthecarwasgivena moreslopingprofile,andanoptionalfoldingluggagegrid wasoffered,fittedtotherearpanel,fortwopoundsseven shillingsandsixpence. ©JanetWright ©SimonWright

Well,itdidn’tneedmuch thinkingaboutandacouple ofdaysafterreturninghome fromRaliBaeCeredigion,I wasofftoHeathrowtomeet RussforaflighttoGeneva andashortdrivetoMorzine forthe59thrunningofthe RallyeMont-BlancMorzine. Oneoftheoldestralliesin France,it’sbeenwonby everytopnameinFrench rallyingexceptSebastien Ogier.
