LONDON & PARIS
Two great cities – one epic family adventure
Page 34
It’s so good to hear your voice. Have you ever surprised someone back home with a phone call while you’re off exploring someplace like the Galápagos or lounging in a Tuscan villa-hotel? The reactions are fun to hear – the startled “where are you?” then the delight that you took the time when you’re so many time zones away. At Classic Journeys, we have those moments constantly, only in reverse. A few days into your trip, one of us calls you wherever in the world you may be to check in and make sure everything is going well. Hearing your voice and listening to your feedback – before, during and after your trip – is the fuel for everything we do. Guest input often inspires itinerary refinements, for example, when we hear that a chance occurrence on one Portugal departure was so memorable that it deserves to be repeated. When parents and grandparents wished out loud for family travel experiences designed to introduce the younger generations to international travel, our London & Paris trip (page 34) was a direct upshot. And now we’ve crowdsourced our family of passionate travelers to bring you Travelers’ Choice – their top picks for 2020’s best experiences (page 10). Their voices come through loud and clear in recommendations you can use to choose your next trip. I hope you will give us a chance to show you what good listeners we are at Classic Journeys. Call us at 833-738-7272, whether you’re in the brainstorming phase or are looking for more details about a particular one of our 100 handcrafted itineraries. We’d love to hear from you and start the conversation that will lead to the trip of a lifetime for you. Best Regards,
– EDWARD PIEGZA President & Founder

Ah, the Creature Comforts FIVE-STAR INNS TO MICHELIN-STARRED RESTAURANTS, WE TREAT YOU TO THE VERY BEST. SUPERIOR HOSPITALITY
ABOVE-AND-BEYOND BENEFITS
When you shop for a trip, the easiest way to compare options is to look at hotels. At Classic Journeys, our accommodations include coveted properties that appear in “World’s Best” and “Top 10” rankings. In most cases, we obtain lower rates than bigger companies thanks to our long relationships with hoteliers. If there’s a fine hotel tucked into an authentic farmhouse, within view of the Taj Mahal or clinging to the cliffs in Santorini, we’ll find it. More often than not, you’ll spend two or more nights in a location for a chance to settle in.
Only Classic Journeys enhances your vacation with a selection of these special amenities you won’t find anywhere else.
UNFORGETTABLE MEALS Food is a foolproof way into the hearts, homes and history of the places you visit, and we prove it with every meal. If we start telling you about the Provençal dinner with endless courses ... the sweet taste of a just-caught trout in Montana ... the homemade spring rolls on our junk in Halong Bay ... we’ll never stop. All of your breakfasts and most dinners are included and many lunches, too. For picnics, we shop local markets and bakeries. We’ll also get you into village cafés and small restaurants that are favorites of our local guides who often know the cooks.

Skálakot Manor Luxury Hotel Seven generations of Icelanders have lived on this family farm, nestled at the intersection of sheep meadows and mountains. The white gales echo the nearby peaks. After a day outdoors, maybe riding one of the farm’s Icelandic horses, nothing is so perfect as a hot-tub soak before a locavore dinner focused on specialties like Arctic char.

Clifftop Pizza
Pinch yourself (but not too hard). It’s really you … this is really your hotel … that is undeniably your whitewashed terrace that overlooks Santorini’s ridiculously blue caldera. The suites are spacious and luxurious, but to be honest you’ll find yourself at every chance out on the terrace – watching the water glitter, the wispy clouds sweep by, and the sunset, chilling with a glass of something chilly at your side.
Just below a monastery on a cliff overlooking the sea, lies the path to the best pizza of your life. Signora Grazia will wave you into her home. In the cave built into the cliff behind the house, there’s a disk of pizza dough for you to stretch, top to your taste, and bake in the wood-fired oven. Lunch on the terrace with a glass of the homemade wine they refer to as “grape juice,” you chat with the family, soak in the view, and discover how blissful pizza can be. This is some kind of heaven.
Lunch in a Rainforest Village You’ve never approached a meal quite like this. Your traditional dugout canoe slides up Panama’s Chagres River, walled in by lush rainforest. Up ahead there’s a clearing, and members of the indigenous Embera tribe wade out to welcome you and pull you to the banks. There, in the thatched village on stilts, lunch is on the fire. The typical fare is tilapia and plantains on banana leaves. And as the villagers share their humble meal with you, you get a taste of a life that you never could have imagined until now.

GUIDES
Welcome to my world Isabelle HOME TURF: PROVENCE PROFESSIONAL GUIDE FOR: 25 YEARS “I want my guests always to have real life moments not just travel moments,” says Isabelle. That extends to her invitation to visit her own farm to taste the award-winning olive oil that she and her chef-husband Jean create. It doesn’t get more real than that!
Isabelle was outstanding! Her knowledge of history, horticulture, culture, etc. was deep and broad and made our trip fun, rewarding and informative. She was a delight to be around with a great sense of humor and flexibility.” — Sherry W. | Kentucky
Atli HOME TURF: ICELAND FUN FACT: CAN TRACE HIS ANCESTRY TO 9TH CENTURY VIKINGS It’s true. Atli’s family heritage includes not only Vikings, but also more than 30 generations of shark fishermen. His favorite way to show Classic Journeys guests Iceland is by super jeep to access places tourists cannot.

Ulisse HOME TURF: AMALFI COAST, PUGLIA, SICILY PROFESSIONAL GUIDE FOR: 17 YEARS "Food defines us in Italy,” Ulisse says, “And we love to share.” Fresh porcini hot from the grill. Adventure Destination: Iceland The descendants of 9th century Vikings know a thing or two about how to get along in the wilds. Lucky you that they are your local guides on this visit to Iceland. (“I want to be with our guide Atli when the zombie apocalypse hits!”) Walks on glaciers and lava flows, exploring ice caves, checking in on puffins, chatting up shark fishermen are just part of it. “We saw tourists taking photos from observation points while we went right into the midst of it all. There’s nothing armchair about this trip!” Though a relaxing soak in hot tub at your luxury hotel is a pretty sweet way to recharge for a new day of adventures tomorrow.

Culture Capital: Prague, Vienna and Budapest
Wine Region: Tuscany
How many capitals can one empire have? For the Habsburgs, three was the magic number. Fueled by immense wealth, they were – and remain – centers of the arts, architecture, history and the good life. That they are close enough together to be perfect grace notes on a casually paced week in the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary makes them all the more appealing. “You feel like you are timetraveling,” which is as good a reason as any to add these three cities to your life list. Well, that and a slice of sacher torte in a sidewalk café.
Walks in ridiculously beautiful vineyards. A glass (or two) from a family’s favorite bottle along with lunch in their 15th century castle. The Tuscan sunset refracted through a ruby-red pour as you watch the spectacle from the terrace of your villa-hotel. “We never had wine for breakfast, but maybe only because we didn’t ask!” Better of course to stick to morning caffé to fuel days that include Florence, Portofino and the perched villages of the Cinque Terre. “And thanks for treating us to complimentary wine at every dinner.” No problemo. What better way to enjoy the wine that runs in the veins of Tuscany?
Family Destination: Morocco
Beach Destination: Costa Rica
“When I was a kid we camped in the backyard, but now my kids have camped in the Sahara. Priceless.” That tent, by the way, is in a luxury Berber encampment. You arrive on a camel, and it’s just one of the reasons this exotic vacation is a huge hit with all generations. With an entourage of local experts, you explore medieval medinas and see both sides of Marrakesh from the souks to a lavish private home. “Everything was new and different, but we never felt outside our comfort zones.” That’s a major win for any family getaway.
If life’s a beach, Costa Rica makes life worth living! Known as the world’s premier eco-destination, it also boasts fantastic sandy strands. Luxurious beachfront lodges make it super easy to split the difference between abundant nature and aquatic fun. “Spotting hummingbirds, crocodiles, macaws and capuchin monkeys is great, but monkeying around on the beach is a blast, too!” Snorkeling, boogie boarding, kayaking, watching for dolphins and sea turtles, or just vegging out, the best of the beach is within easy reach.

Best Island: Cuba
Wildlife Experience: Galápagos
“Nobody believes I snorkeled on the Bay of Pigs, but I have pix to prove it!” You’ll see: Cuba is unexpected and life-changing. Instead of the usual Caribbean lifeis-a-resort experience, you make a deep dive into the real world to meet Cuban people like cigar-rollers, artists, coffee growers, and Afro-Caribbean dancers. You also explore 500 years of history from the sugar plantations of Trinidad to modern Havana where you still ride in mid-century tail-finned cars. Bonus points: While recent regulations shut down cruises and other travel companies, all Classic Journeys trips are good to go with departures through 2020.
The Big Five make Galápagos #1 for wildlife. The giant land tortoises, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, penguins and marine iguanas add up to an experience that had AFAR Magazine naming Classic Journeys island-based trip “The Best Wildlife Encounter in the World.” It’s a “happy shock to get so close to these animals,” an accomplishment made easy by the expert local naturalist/guides who are with you every walking, snorkeling, kayaking inch of the way. Staying in waterfront boutique hotels instead of a cruise ship means “no cabin fever for us!”
Hiking Destination: Chile The test of a good hiking destination is how it keeps bringing you to a dead stop. Yes, you’re booted up and striking out, but in Chile the overwhelming beauty of the place makes you pause to ponder. Patagonia puts you in rolling meadows at the foot of the Torres del Paine crags. The trails lead to Salto Grande waterfall and a lake cluttered with ice floes freshly calved from Grey Glacier. On a working estancia, you’re glad for the appetite you worked up when you sit down to a classic gaucho barbecue. “Hiking in Chile exercised our imaginations like crazy!”
14 • CLASSIC JOURNEYS™ | TOLL FREE: 833-738-7272
Romantic Destination: Amalfi Cue the sighs of contentment. No place is oh-so-easy to love as Italy’s Amalfi Coast. It calls for multiple nights on Capri at the Grand Quisisana, one of the most gorgeous hotels on earth. “After the day-trippers went back to Naples, we had Capri practically to ourselves. Heaven!” And things only get dreamier as you revel in pastel Positano, go limoncello tasting, make your own pizza in a private kitchen in a cliffside home overlooking the sea, and…. Well, you get the idea: it’s easy to give your heart to glorious, glamorous Amalfi.
Most-Awarded Hotels: India “Rajah-worthy is the best way to describe our hotels in India.” Indeed, how can one quibble with a luxury room with a view of the Taj Mahal? Your Relais & Chateaux retreat in Deogarh is a traditional mansion-style haveli at the edge of lake. And the Udaipur Obervilas is extravagantly palatial with a swarm of white domes that reflect in vast pools amid 30-acres of sculpted gardens. The hotels alone are worth the visit. But juxtaposed with your forays into rural villages and the bustling market streets with local guides, these properties elevate your experience beyond every expectation.

BELIZE AND GUATEMALA WILL LEAVE YOU BREATHLESS … AND SPEECHLESS "I climbed two Mayan pyramids. I learned that hand-grinding cacao beans is all in the wrist. I looked a nurse shark in his beady little eyes. I hot-tubbed in my private casita while watching sunset over a rainforest lake. Did I mention that I tasted a termite?” And that, friends, is just a partial list. When you ask Amy Guasch, Classic Journeys guest services manager and uber-frequent traveler, how she whiled away the time on her recent multisport trip to Belize and Guatemala, her answers come fast and furious. “I loved it all,” she raved, and then dished the details. WHY SHE CHOSE BELIZE AND GUATEMALA
I was in a tropical mood, and Central America is easy to get to. I also like to have my passport stamped as often as possible, so getting to both

countries appealed to my trophy-collector side. And then there’s my Indiana Jones alter ego. WHEN SHE KNEW SHE WASN’T IN ‘KANSAS’ ANYMORE
For me, it was Xunantunich. Out in the Belizean countryside, we met a rancher named Santiago who saddled up his horses for us. He led us on an easy trail ride through some forest. At one point, there was a river that we crossed by handcranking a ferry. Then, all of sudden, peeking through and above the trees we started to see El Castillo, a Mayan pyramid that’s 130 feet tall. It was mind-blowing, and yes, we climbed to the top. I was breathless and speechless. Later in the week, we went to Tikal where the ruins are even bigger and more extensive, but the first one made such an impression.
CLASSICJOURNEYS.COM • 21
About the coolest hotel where she’s ever stayed I’d go back to Guatemala tomorrow for Las Lagunas eco-lodge. Decadent doesn’t begin to describe it. The rooms are private bungalows that jut out over a rainforest lagoon with the best view ever of a tropical sunset. I felt like I was a million miles from everywhere. Plus, the hotel is in a private nature preserve. There’s an island in the lake populated by howler monkeys, and we cruised out there on a boat with the local naturalists who care for them. FYI, a little howler monkey sounds as loud as a lion.
And as for that termite snack … Well, I only tried ONE. Our local guide Giselle opened a bit of bark on a tree to show us where the termites nested and to make the point that Mayans included them in their diet. When she asked if anyone wanted to try one, I raised my hand (a little slowly). She said it would taste like a “dirty carrot”, and weird as that sounds, she was right. No termite shaming for those in the group who weren’t interested. But this is a great example of the terrific things our guides did to help us understand local life, past and present. For them, it’s all in the little details, not just the ruins and the resorts.
On an un-Belize-able day Before this trip, I thought Belize was all about the beach. Oops. On one day in Belize, we started at a local women’s cooperative in San Antonio. They showed us how to grind the corn and form tortillas. The ultimate test is how well they bubble up when they get baked on hot stones. Mine passed well enough to be part of our lunch. After that, we visited a village school where we talked to the kids and gave them art supplies and balls for their playground. Like the things we did all week, this was facilitated by our local guide Marlon who translated and helped us really engage with the kids. He’s so great at making everyone – natives and visitors – feel comfortable with each other.
Caribbean Sea? Or pool? Or both. The options are all yours at the luxurious Victoria House Resort & Spa in Belize.
But wait, there’s more! After that, we drove on a rainforest trail to what looked like a swimming hole where teenagers were jumping off cliffs into the water. With local guides, we got into canoes and paddled into a big limestone cavern. It was used by Mayans, and on some ledges, you can even see ancient bones. Such a great combination of adventure and history lesson all in one.

We saw loads of tourists piling onto charter boats that then clustered over parts of the Hol Chan Reserve for some elbowto-elbow snorkeling. We avoided all of that thanks to Classic Journeys local boat captain and guide, Steve. He owns his own catamaran and with his siblings as crew members, they took our Classic Journeys group on board

exclusively for our own private day on the water. Steve took us to his favorite hidden spots until the tourists headed back to shore, so we could have Hol Chan Reserve all to ourselves. When I saw the nurse sharks in the water, I wasn’t sure I was quite ready for snorkeling. But Steve had all the gear we needed and plenty of guidance. I went in, and I was so proud of myself. It was so exhilarating to see the coral forest and the damselfish and spotted eagle rays and turtles. At one point, Steve dove down to gather conch and to spearfish for yellowfin, which minutes later became the freshest reef-to-table meal. Of all the times I’ve been at a beach or on the water, that was the most perfect one of all.
Why she tells her friends to go I’ve never had so much variety on a single trip as in Belize and Guatemala. It’s a little bit rainforest, a little bit beach-y island getaway. I saw a lot, I Iearned a lot. And I had a blast. In the end, how much better than that could any vacation be?
Our friend Steve’s catamaran is the ideal platform for cruising, snorkeling and relaxing at Ambergris Caye.

C A N YO U S T I LL G O T O C U B A? YE S ! There’s a totally legal clause in the U.S. restrictions on travel to Cuba, and you can take advantage of it if you travel with Classic Journeys. Isn’t all travel to Cuba prohibited now? Most, but not all. It’s true that cruises and privately planned travel are no longer allowed. The new rules have also put an end to many people-to-people programs. So how can Classic Journeys still offer trips? Because we responded vigorously and quickly to the evolving regulations, all of our trips are compliant under two license categories — ‘People-to-People’ under a “grandfather” clause and also ‘Support for the Cuban People’. As a result, all of our 2019 and 2020 trips can operate legally, despite restrictions that affect other operators. Are there still commercial flights to Cuba? Yes. The airline will ask for specific information when you reserve. The Classic Journeys team will brief you in advance on how to answer properly and legally. Is it safe to reserve now? Absolutely. All of our Cuba scheduled departure dates for 2019 and 2020 are good to go, and you can even book a private departure if you prefer. If you’ve been hesitating to plan a Cuba trip, this is the moment to do it while space is still available. Want more details? Call us at 833-738-7272

TWO GREAT CITIES. ONE EPIC FAMILY ADVENTURE. Astride an electric bicycle for the first time, feeling agile as she navigated around the reflecting pools and sculpture gardens at the Palace of Versailles, Heather Gandy had a revelation. “I realized that unicorns are real!” she says with a laugh. “I used to think that the ideal family vacation was a total unicorn, some sort of fantasy land where our 7- to 77-year-olds would smile all day. Where I would sip champagne and take high tea and never have to referee or play social director. Where we would explore the world’s great cities and share experiences that we’d reminisce about over Thanksgiving turkeys for years to come. Our family trip to London and Paris with Classic Journeys made me a believer in unicorns!” This epic handcrafted adventure to two of the world’s most famous and beautiful cities has everything going for it. For the younger travelers in your clan, London and Paris are awesome – but also easy to grasp, especially when you’re in the company of expert local guides who become your instant friends and revel in making

their hometowns exciting, accessible and fun to explore. “I think this one week turned my granddaughter into a lifelong traveler,” one recent guest raved. “It was just a wonderful introduction to overseas travel, and she already wants to know where we’re going next.” For those in your family who’ve already been to Paris and London, get ready to see the cities through new eyes thanks to activities like nothing you’ve done on past visits. In London, your local guide leads visits that are something completely different than the typical slog from monument to monument. Whether you’re floating sky-high on the London Eye or standing under St. Paul’s huge dome or learning about the ravens and crown jewels at the Tower of London, you get the story of the city, paced and presented in personal style that speaks to the experiences and attention spans of your whole family. To mix up the tempo and keep things engaging, the itinerary includes events like an elaborate afternoon tea, served Harry Potter-style with drinkable potions. (As one dad admitted to us, “I pretended like it was for my kids. But I’ve read the Harry Potter books. I saw the movies. I loved it.”) At the opposite end of the magical/ mystery spectrum, you also get a private visit to Stonehenge when the site is closed to the public. Think about it. If you’ve ever been to see the legendary circle of standing monoliths, you know what a crowd scene it can be. You and your family, though, will have the site to yourselves – all the better to appreciate the power and let your imaginations run wild. Deep history and over-the-top fun in a single experience is the kind of chemistry that’s not easy to achieve on your own.
Your guide arranges private access to Stonehenge after the site closes to the public. Imagine your family with the awesome megaliths all to yourselves for a sunset you’ll all remember, always.

That kind of exclusivity and lineskipping ease continues in Paris where your guide whisks you past the crowds for instant access to the Louvre. Too many visitors are already worn out
GET READY TO SEE THE CITIES THROUGH NEW EYES THANKS TO ACTIVITIES LIKE NOTHING YOU’VE DONE ON PAST VISITS. before they get a glimpse of the Mona Lisa or Venus de Milo. But not you. Likewise, at Versailles you’ll get a personally guided visit of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette’s palace. Whereas most visitors only look out from the Hall of Mirrors to see the sculpted gardens stretching to near infinity, you all will spend time out in the gardens, too, on the all-time best bicycle ride. The bikes are included, and there are E-bikes for anyone who prefers less manual pedaling. The cool part is that you get to explore the 2,000-acre estate like most tourists never do…and enjoy each others’ company in the process. Just see if you don’t have the kind of I-believe-inunicorns moment that Heather did. You can also expect your family to develop a real appetite for Paris that goes beyond warm croissants for breakfast and the tasting you’ll have at one of the city’s chocolatiers. Your days will be filled with guided strolls on the Left Bank and a nighttime cruise on the Seine to see the skyline twinkle. And here’s a secret you’ll want to pass on: the best way to experience the Eiffel Tower is from the top of Montparnasse Tower where you get never-ending views of the city without an endless wait to ascend to the Eiffel Tower’s over-crowded observation platforms. And as Heather learned firsthand, “I liked our
time on Montparnasse Tower better than when we were on the Eiffel Tower, because on Montparnasse we had amazing views of Eiffel!” When you travel with your family, it’s no time to skimp on hotels. Location matters so that you can step right out the door and be in the thick of things without wasting time or energy to get to the sights. When it’s time to rest and recuperate from busy days, comfort matters just as much. Both luxury hotels on this trip exceed what you hoped for. In London, the Ampersand Hotel is a 5-star boutique property near Hyde Park, Chelsea and Harrod’s. In the City of Light, you’ll be ensconced at Au Manoir Saint Germain, in the heart of the Left Bank. Heather Gandy’s family included 22 people with a 70-year age spread. When she polled them to ask what they liked best, she reports: “Everybody had different favorites. There is NOTHING I would’ve taken out. We all loved it all.” If you’re planning a family getaway – whether there are two of you or 20 – could you hope for better reviews than that?
A Parisian chocolatier welcomes your family for the tasting of a lifetime. Finger-licking magnifique!

As you walk along a Cornish beach straight out of a Daphne du Maurier novel or slather a warm scone with clotted cream, it all feels so … natural. Tuscany SOMEBODY HAS TO SIT ON THE TERRACE OF A TUSCAN VILLA, SIPPING A GLASS OF CHIANTI AS THE SUN SETS OVER A ROLLING SEA OF SILVERY OLIVE TREES. Why shouldn’t it be you? And why shouldn’t life always be like this? Lunch in a 15th century castle. A vineyard walk to San Gimignano. Private kitchens that invite you in to garlic-scented heaven. Famed Portofino and the Cinque Terre — those five impossible villages that lure you down from a clifftop trail to pastel streets that practically spill into the Ligurian Sea. And in Florence, more art treasures per square inch than anywhere on earth (and a jump-to-the-front-of-the-line opportunity to see one of the most famous: Michelangelo’s David). On our Culture + Walking trips and Culinary tours, you’ll discover one of the happiest truths in travel: Tuscany is everything you dreamed it would be, and more.

Italy VISIT ITALY EVERY YEAR FOREVER, AND YOU’D NEVER HAVE TO REPEAT YOURSELF. Each region — sometimes it seems like each village — is its own utterly unique and totally irresistible destination. From the alpine breezes that cool the villas on Lake Como to sun-warmed Sicily, the culture, climate and terrain couldn’t be more different. For something more rustic and off-the-beaten path, head for Puglia in the heel of Italy’s boot. For the flip side of Italian sophistication, our Family trip to Venice, Florence and Rome is a wonderful introduction to the best of the best. Or hobnob with rural shepherds — and the yacht set — on a visit to Sardinia that also includes the nearby French island of Corsica. Your options also include our bestselling trips to Tuscany (pages 42-43) and the Amalfi Coast (pages 44-45).

France THE SEDUCTIVE POWER OF FRANCE IS IRRESISTIBLE. You can try to wave off the lunchtime splash of Bordeaux, but the glass always seems to find your lips. When a maman leans out her window on folded arms and cocks her head in that come-here-and-tell-me-who-you-are way, what can you say but, “Of course.” If a breeze heavy with lavender tugs at your senses, it’s almost impossible not to give in. Our Culture + Walking trips go happily with the French flow, whether we’re on a lazy low-tide walk at Mont Saint-Michel or catching the rays on the ramparts of a clifftop castle overlooking the Dordogne River. The cuisine is remarkable, the hotels are magnifique, and with your local guide you’ll slip easily into la vie française.

UNCORKING PORTUGAL HIP, HISTORIC AND HIGH-ENERGY, PORTUGAL HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES
You could logically expect a wellpreserved, 800-year-old country to feel like a great big museum – all velvet ropes in the king’s bedroom and commemorative plaques. Portugal, though, apparently didn’t get that memo. Ancient as it is, this land is also the master of reinvention, and today the country has a retro-modern vibe that is utterly Portuguese. Susana, our good friend and a Classic Journeys expert local guide, says it’s because “in Portugal, we live with the past all around us, but we absolutely refuse to live in the past.” A day in Évora proves her case, hands down.
Local guide Susana says, “The past is all around
Lording it over the golden plains of the Alentejo, Évora is a beautifully preserved medieval town with everything from cathedral to Roman ruins. But don’t imagine for a second that it’s trapped in amber. It’s a university town too, and the energy is impossible to miss. Fourteenth-century storefronts house art galleries; a restaurant is as likely to specialize in the classics (cozido a portuguesa, anyone?) to 21st century twists. History matters intensely, but the story refuses to end there.
us, but we refused to live in the past!”

Around here cork is seriously cool – an old-as-the-hills trade with plenty of contemporary cachet. Our friend David, who’s the fourth generation to work in his family’s cork factory, leaves no doubt in your mind. By the time David waves you into the workshop, you have seen the region’s picturesque groves of trees with their startling burgundy-red trunks and branches. Those are cork oaks, and their strong blush comes after their bark has been gently peeled away. As David tells you, the bark grows back, making his family’s livelihood
Susana isn’t bragging when she tells you, “Portugal is timeless. Our past and present live so happily together. Everything is here and nowhere else is better!”
sustainable before it was in style. You see how they harvest the bark, treat it, and transform it into everything from furniture to wine corks. In fact, his great-grandfather was designing cork furniture as far back as the ‘50s. He’ll introduce you to his father Joaquim who is the creative force today. You get the story of a family and a personal look at a traditional trade that most of us have never even stopped to think about. The historic-but-hip parallel is alive and well at a nearby organic vineyard as well. There you meet Victor, a winemaker who’s so intense you can practically imagine him willing the grapes to have the perfect sugar content. He’s the kind of guy who tends the cows, and looks after the estate’s own olive grove, and who lives, breathes and dreams wine. For him, biodynamic wine isn’t a marketing ploy; it’s a return to the way grapes have been grown here in his native Alentejo for 2,000 years. True believer that he is, Victor also makes sure you get it that he’s not trying to recreate heritage wines. Instead, he’s returning to the past to create something modern. Later, at a culinary picnic in the shade of a cork tree, you sip wines that taste of the soft clear air and the golden soil and drink to Victor for blurring the lines between past and present.

Lisbon, Douro Valley & Porto Portugal has more regal grandeur than any other country we know. Experience the rich imperial landmarks of Lisbon and Porto, explore 8,000 year old Neolithic stone formations and cruise on the Douro River in a traditional Portuguese Rabelo boat.
The delight of Portugal is that every day is a fresh start. One moment, you stand on Cabo da Roca where the Atlantic surf pounds the westernmost point in all of Europe. There’s that morning in Lisbon when you bite into your first creamy-flaky custard tart, a national obsession if ever there was one. Then, almost without warning, you slip completely out of this millennium as you step into the Neolithic stone circles that pre-date Stonehenge. On the banks of the Douro, you can imagine yourself on a small dock awaiting arrival of a boat to carry your port to Oporto – only you’re on a chaise, by the pool with a ringside view of the river and the endless vineyardcovered hills. Susanna isn’t bragging when she tells you, “Portugal is timeless. Our past and present live so happily together. Everything is here and nowhere else is better!” There’s no time like the present to find out for yourself.

Moorish southern Spain is cinematic. First, suave Seville, Granada and the Alhambra with a local expert. Then, vast plains dotted with ruined fortresses, a luxury five-star hotel in the style of an Andalusian village, gnarled olive groves and spectacular country walks.

From cool Barcelona, this active family vacation heads to the country and a four-star hilltop parador near waterfalls and extinct volcanoes. From a resort overlooking the Costa Brava, go sea kayaking, cave exploring, and walking amid Roman ruins.

The grandeur of Dubrovnik. Footpaths above the Adriatic. Wine-tasting lunches and seafood dinners. Lavender fields, olive oil mills, a two-monk monastery, harborside nights in Hvar. This amazing week is a rich, relaxing cultural experience.
Kids love Croatia. Adriatic waters invite swimming, kayaking and snorkeling. Country walks take you to monasteries and olive mills. And there’s great variety with stays in Dubrovnik, at a seaside resort and on the beautiful isle of Hvar.
Start on the balmy Adriatic coast with palm-lined bays. Ascend into wild mounts with sheer canyons and quiet lakes. And all along the way meet olive growers, grappa-makers, shepherds and artists in this most beautiful and remote Balkan country.

United States WHEN YOU CRAVE A VACATION THAT FEELS FAR AWAY BUT ISN’T, THE GOOD OL’ U.S. OF A. IS IT. There’s a region just right for your mood. Kayak with icebergs and chat up the halibut fishermen of Alaska on a Multisport trip second to none. Down in Charleston, the pace is languid and the culture refined. For mountains’ majesty, Montana’s Glacier Park is unsurpassed. (Alpine meadow walks and meet-ups with cowboys are the icing on the cake.) And the list goes on. Just as much as if you were headed for Morocco or Machu Picchu, the idea of seeing America first with a full time local guide and zero logistical hassles makes great sense. Here’s to home turf … and the adventures in store for you!

Glacier Park is the centerpiece of a fun outdoor week full of snow-capped Rockies, elk and eagles, walks and picnics in wildflower meadows. Meet local Blackfeet natives and ranchers, boats and gondolas and soak in nature at its amazing best.

America’s Finest National Parks
The Antebellum South
Three amazing parks on one easy trip. Bryce’s red rock hoodoos. Sunset from our lodge on the Grand Canyon’s rim. A guided visit to Ancestral Puebloan ruins and the Zion Narrows slot canyon. Great lodges keep you in the heart of the action.
Take your family national parking with total emphasis on fun instead of logistics. This amazing vacation is about so much more than the sights: mountain biking, river tubing, fossil hunting, a cowboy cookout and more will make your three park visit a once-in-alifetime experience.
Think grand city mansions … barrier islands where dolphins romp … villages where Gullah culture from West Africa is still strong. The moss-draped coastal South is one of America’s most distinctive regions with history, culture and a way of life all its own.

PRIVATE TRAVEL
Go Private!
Your group. Your dates. Just for you. DO YOU HAVE A NARROW TRAVEL WINDOW THAT DOESN’T FIT WITH PUBLISHED TOUR DATES? Is your wish list full of activities or destinations you can’t find on anybody’s itinerary? Then go private! You can start any Classic Journeys itinerary on any day you choose ... massage the activities to match your interests … or build in extra days and destinations, whether you’re a party of one or a group of 30. You’ll find that the starting point — the published base price of a Classic Journeys vacation — is lower than what many companies charge for their comparable tours. In some cases, you’ll even get a private vacation for less than what you would pay for other companies’ standard tours.
2 WAY S TO G O
1
YOUR DATES + OUR ITINERARY
Pick any Classic Journeys itinerary you find in the catalog or on the website. Then just name the date when you would like your vacation to begin. It’s the simplest way to arrange a private vacation. Bonus points because you can align your trip to a special occasion. (“We want our private breakfast at Stonehenge to fall on Dad’s 60th birthday.”)
2
YOUR DATES + YOUR WISH LIST
The sky’s the limit with a custom trip. A candlelit dinner in the heart of Angkor Wat. An entire villa-hotel all to yourselves. Two weeks in Peru and the Galápagos, or a summer-long Grand Tour with your extended family. If you can wish it, our team can make it happen.
Start planning your private vacation here. To get the process started, go to ClassicJourneys.com/Request or call us toll-free at 833-738-7272.

Giving Back Pays Back You make a real and positive impact on the lives of the people and places you visit on a Classic Journeys vacation.
KNOWING SHEPHERDS, VILLAGE ELDERS AND CHEFS IS GOOD BUSINESS.
WE HAVE SOFT SPOTS FOR CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND WOMEN’S ECONOMIC ISSUES.
Keeping it local is what we’re all about at Classic Journeys. We put our pesos, dirhams and euros into the pockets of the folks who live where we travel. From tour leaders to glacier guides to truffle hunters, village elders to geishas, llama herders to gelato makers, restaurateurs to hoteliers, we work with the local people to support their livelihoods. It’s your guarantee that you’ll have authentic, up-close experiences on your trip. Best of all, our person-to-person business dealings help sustain their ways of life. These wonderful friends reciprocate by welcoming you into their worlds.
You’ll find that we have a special affection for tiny village schools in regions from the Peruvian Andes to the Mekong Delta. So that you can be a part of the experience, we suggest supplies that will make meaningful and useful presents to the students. As a company, we directly donate resources to the schools. We’re also proud to support community programs and women’s collectives around the world. Many of them work to preserve traditional crafts and folkways as diverse as weaving or the harvest and processing of argan oil in rural Morocco. Your explorations with Classic Journeys help to preserve the past and positively shape the future of women and children in developing countries.

SOLO TRAVEL
Traveling Solo? You’re Not Alone.
YOU’VE JUST FOUND THE COMPANY THAT HAS THE SAME SPIRIT AND INDEPENDENCE YOU LOOK FOR IN YOUR OWN TRAVELS. On average, about a third of Classic Journeys guests are solo travelers. When you join us, you’ll have a singular travel experience in the congenial company of others who see the world just like you do.
YOUR SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS ARE THE LOWEST.
YOU’LL NEVER FEEL LIKE A FIFTH WHEEL.
Admit it. You’ve learned that you can’t get emotionally involved with a trip until you check out the single supplement. Well, here is the news you’ve been hoping for! You’ll be thrilled to find that Classic Journeys has the lowest single supplements anywhere. While some companies boost prices up to 50 percent for single travelers, we keep it to just 15 to 20 percent on average. We only pass along any extra costs that hotels charge us, instead of marking it up to make extra profit from you.
For starters, you already have a friend on the tour. Your expert local guides are with you full-time to watch out for everyone’s needs and interests. At the fine restaurants where you’ll dine, you won’t find yourself at a table for one. And, your accommodations are “doubles for single use” so that you can have as much elbow room as everyone else. “I just feel really comfortable traveling solo with y’all, and I look forward to this trip every single year.” —Susan L.
