Leah and Peter Leah and Peter met while attending UGA and became involved with Athens Young Life. They started dating as a sophomore and junior and never looked back! With both of them going to undergrad at UGA and Peter staying in Athens 4 more years for medical school, Athens is a huge part of their story. It’s where they fell in love and met all the people who have loved and supported them through the years. Leah and Peter knew they wanted to get married in Athens and 255 Milledge was the perfect place! Peter and his family are Nigerian so the couple incorporated a Nigerian ceremony with the Rehearsal Dinner! The bride and groom, along with their families, wore Nigerian Native Attire. Each person picked out the style they wanted and the clothing was custom made in Nigeria. The ceremony was amazing and it was such a fun night! Leah felt it was an honor for Peter’s family to welcome her family into their culture in this way! The couple is now living in Atlanta while Peter completes his residency at Emory. They love any chance to get back to Athens, especially any Saturday in the fall cheering on the Dawgs!

TIPS FROM A PROFESSIONAL

Jolie & Ricky, first dance lesson

Are You Ready For Your Wedding Dance? Business Partner - Ganine Derleth Dancing Gardens Lake Hartwell Now that you’ve said your vows, it’s time for the reception and your first dance together as husband and wife. The D.J. invites you to the dance floor. The room goes quiet and all eyes are on you. It’s a magical moment. Looking into each other’s eyes, you embrace. Your bodies move together in harmony with each other and with the music. You are in the moment, creating a special memory that will last forever. It’s a dream come true. Have you imagined your first dance? What would you like it to be? There’s nothing more intimate than your first dance (well, almost) and unlike your wedding cake your first dance will be there for your first anniversary and your fiftieth. There are many styles of dance to express yourself with, from a beautiful classic slow Waltz (think Disney prince and princess), a tender Foxtrot, a sensual Rumba, a spicy Tango, and more. What’s your style? Do you already have a special song? The song you choose for your wedding dance is special and becomes ‘your song’ so it’s important that it has meaning for you both. What are your favorite songs? What music makes you want to move, makes you stop whatever you’re doing when you hear it and just groove? Or maybe for you it’s the beautiful words in a ballad that touch your heart. Choose a song that really suits you both and reflects your personalities. Music has the ability to stir our memory and bring us back in time. Think of a song from your youth and instantly you remember not only the words, but where you were and people you were with.

Your wedding song will recall your special day. Many years from now you will have a spark of joy when you hear it and your memories will come flooding in. The song you choose will affect the style of dance that suits it. You will need to know the size of your dance floor because it affects what you may do. Brides, think about your dress… can you move in it? Can you raise your arm? Can the dress be bustled? We recommend practicing in shoes similar to the ones you will be wearing on your wedding day because it will affect comfort and your balance while dancing. It’s also a good idea to practice ahead of time in your special wedding shoes. Consider not only lessons for the bride and groom, first dance choreography, but also Father-daughter dance lessons, Mother-son dance lessons, and a wedding party group class. Everyone can learn to dance. It takes a desire to learn, a safe comfortable learning environment and a teacher who ‘breaks it down’ so it makes sense to you. There is only one signal for ‘please turn right’ only one signal for ‘please turn left’ so no matter what speed or style the music is - the signal doesn’t change. It’s basic driver’s-ed for the dance floor. It’s easier than you think and it’s quite fun. Couples smile and laugh when they realize they really can do it. The teacher’s job is to make it so much fun you can’t wait to come back for more. It doesn’t take long to learn some basic dance skills, you just need to learn to move together. Plan on starting two or three months before the wedding, once a

week. Gentle guidance and encouragement from a professional will give you knowledge and confidence in your own abilities. Are you the couple that wants to surprise your family and friends with a unique routine, choreographed just for you to your special song? That may take a little more practice but you’ll be glad you did. Your wedding dance lessons will become a romantic date night you look forward to. The months and weeks building up to your wedding can be stressful but dance becomes your happy place where the rest of the world falls away as you hold each other and move to the music. You may want to start four to six months prior to your wedding. The moves you learn are not just for your first dance, they are for your life together, and dancing brings more fun to life! There are so many reasons to celebrate good times and dance the night away... anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, weddings, great vacations, cruises, parties, and of course your honeymoon! With the skills you learned for your wedding dance you will both be more comfortable and confident on any dance floor. Dancing is great exercise, a wonderful way to build relationships and create memories while learning a new hobby you can share. Now it’s up to you. Take the first step toward a lifetime of romance and learn to dance. You’ll be glad you did.

Sophia & TJ won a dance contest on their honeymoon cruise

Charlsie and Myles

Myles and Charlsie met in high school while they were both working at the Publix and dated while going to UGA together. Myles proposed to Charlsie in Saint Simons on the weekend of the UGA/FL game in 2020. They said “The Dawgs may not have won, but we felt like huge winners that weekend!” Charlsie knew she wanted to get married in the Athens area and indoors (because of, well, the southern August heat). It was kind of a “love at first sight” at The Thompson House and Gardens because the venue had an indoor, air conditioned space that looked old, southern elegant, porches with rocking chairs, and flowers everywhere. It was the exact look she had in mind. One of Myles’s groomsmen loves dinosaurs, and Charlsie knew he owned a T-Rex costume. The bride’s sister thought of an idea to do a fake first look to make Myles laugh. Charlsie asked if he was interested,

and that’s when she found out he owned three dinosaur costumes! She went with the classic T-Rex so that Myles would know it was his friend. After that reveal, they did the real reveal with the bride.

There were lots of sweet touches to their wedding. Since they met while working at Publix, the couple gave out reusable bags at the wedding as a memento. Along with dancing with the T-Rex, Charlsie and her dad decided to do a fun dance after their real one. She was in Perfectly Polished growing up and they would do the Daddy Daughter Dance in the formal. That was such a good memory, they decided it would be a nice touch to add to their new memories. They chose some sentimental songs, like the UGA intro since they are HUGE UGA fans. They wrote the dance together and rehearsed it which gave them great fatherdaughter time before the wedding.

TIPS FROM A PROFESSIONAL

Should your pets be a part of your wedding? Business Partner: Michele Head, Jefferson Civic Center Planning your big day can be stressful and worrying about how to include your best friend— your pet, that is, does not make it easier. As a wedding planner, and a venue manager, I have seen an increase in couples who want to include their best pal in the celebration. How do you decide if you should include your pet and if so, how do you go about incorporating them in your special day? Here are some questions to consider about including your fur baby on your big day. Be honest, does your pet have what it takes to be part of the wedding and/ceremony? Just like children, not all pets act as sweet in public as they do at home. Take into consideration how your pet behaves when you are away from home. Does the venue allow pets? Before being set on having your fur baby be a part of your big day, make sure each venue you have chosen will allow pets. If not, you will need to find a way to incorporate your pet without it being in attendance, or find a new venue. How will your pet be involved now they have passed the test and you have selected a petfriendly venue? As with other friends and relatives, you have to decide what the best way to include them will be. Your pet may be better at being a part of a quieter and calmer setting. If this sounds like your pooch then you may want to have them Studio 30518

only be a part of the ceremony. If your fur-baby is the life of the party, but has a hard time with being still, consider having them be part of the reception only. Either way, it will be a long day for you and for your pet. Make sure you both can enjoy the celebration.

Will your fur baby be dressed for the occasion?

Do you have a designated handler?

Does your fur-baby need pampering before the big day?

You will be busy; your partner will be busy; it is a must to have a designated handler for your pet. You want to focus on your day and your significant other; not on making sure your pup has been outside for a potty break. The last thing you want to be doing on your wedding day is stashing a pooper-scooper behind your bouquet. Have you informed the humans in your wedding that your fur-baby will be part of the festivities? Some people are allergic or even terribly afraid of animals. Just because you love your pooch more than you love most people, does not mean everyone is an animal lover. It is important to be upfront with your wedding party. Have you rehearsed with your pooch as much as you can? Don’t wait until the wedding rehearsal to teach your dog how to walk on a leash. Work on sitting and staying for a long length of time. Introduce them to crowds at a dog friendly restaurant. Make sure they are comfortable around strangers and others when outside your home. Keep treats in your pocket for positive reinforcement.

If you have purchased the most dashing bowtie or the cutest dress for your 4-legged best friend, make sure they are going to wear it down the aisle. A scratchy or whinny dog will outshine the couple in the wedding videos for sure.

A little cut and shampoo may be in need for all members of the wedding party including your best pooch. Make sure your fur-baby is putting its best paw forward. Did you inform your photographer that your fur-baby will be present during wedding party photos? If your pooch will be in the wedding, you need to make sure there are photos to commemorate the occasion. Letting your photographer know ahead gives them adequate time to prepare and bring extra hands if needed. Are there ways to include your pet without them being in attendance? FInd unique and memorable ideas of showing off your 4-legged best friend without them being at the ceremony or reception. Think of things meaningful to you such as a photo of your pet in a prominent place, a pocket square with a picture of your pooch, or a sketch of your fur-baby on your cocktail napkins. Just remember this is your special day— personalize it, make it unique to you and your partner.

TIPS FROM A PROFESSIONAL

Let’s Talk About Cake Business Partner: Sklyer Banks, Citizen Harbor Baking Co. Let’s talk about cake! Cake is a dessert that has marked celebration for centuries. Wedding cakes were once symbols of good luck and prosperity to the bride and groom, made with the finest ingredients to embody the best parts of the couple’s marriage. As with any wedding day decision making, deciding what cake to serve your guests can seem overwhelming and confusing at times. As you embark on your wedding planning journey, you will work with many professionals who will help you decipher what is most important to you and ways you can incorporate those special, sentimental moments into your celebration. If you find yourself wondering what questions to ask your baker, here are a few to keep in mind. 1. WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY WITH YOUR CAKE? When working with your baker, it is very important that you let them know what you are wanting most out of your cake. I have found that couples usually prioritize one of these three things: Price, Design, and Flavor. If your top priority is to stick to a budget, be up front during your consultation with your baker and set that limit to work with. If you want your baker to create a custom work of art for you, ensure they know they have that freedom and give them inspiration to play off of. If you want to have the best tasting cake or multiple flavor options on your big day, talk with your baker about what you or your guests would really love the most. Prioritizing doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on the other aspects of your

cake, but this will help your baker narrow down what matters most to you and how they can meet your expectations best. 2. WHAT KIND OF BUDGET DO YOU HAVE IN MIND? Regardless of if this is your number one priority, always let your baker know what you have to work with. Nowadays, there are many options for couples on a smaller budget. I recommend starting with a small business over a chain retailer because they are more likely to give you creative solutions and options to stay under budget. Mini cupcakes are a great cost saver if you are looking for a way to serve many guests and stay under budget. Donuts, cookie stations, and mini dessert cups are all alternative options as well that are unique ways to feature desserts at your wedding often at lower cost than a tiered cake. No matter your budget size, rest assured there are many small business bakers who would love to serve you on your big day and will accommodate whatever budget you might have! Shopping small is the way to go! 3. WHAT DOES YOUR BAKER SPECIALIZE IN? Cake bakers and artists are exactly that, artists! Each one has a specialized set of talents and abilities unique to themselves and their business. Take time to go through their portfolio and list of provided services to make sure your expectations can align with their skills. Chances are if that baker does not offer what you are looking for, they can refer you to another baker who can!

4. WAYS TO MAKE YOUR CAKE SPECIAL AND MEANINGFUL I find that wedding cakes often get lumped into the category of things that are strictly obligatory on a wedding day. However, there are so many ways you can make your wedding cake something that will be remembered and cherished for years to come. For instance, I have made cakes using recipes from the loved ones who could not make it to the couples wedding. This is such a special way to honor them and share something they loved with your friends and family. If you have pets, add figurines of them to your cake! Incorporate elements of your dress to the design or get a custom groom’s cake that highlights your interests and hobbies! For inspiration ask your baker ways they have added nostalgic touches to cakes in the past. From a baker, trust me when I say we want nothing more than to help make your day exactly what you want it to be. When looking for your wedding cake baker, take the time to find someone who will turn your vision into reality and incorporate all those meaningful details that will leave a lasting impression long after the cake is gone. And remember, the only rule for your wedding cake is that it should only be exactly what you want it to be! Stick to that rule and you will have a cake just as perfect and sweet as the love you share with your partner.

Happy Planning!

Brooklyn & Jakob Brooklyn and Jakob met at a party in 2016 and stayed just friends for a couple of years before they started dating. Once they decided to get married, Brooklyn began planning her dream wedding and wanted to incorporate items that were special and meaningful to her. The couple picked the McDaniel - Tichenor House because it matched perfectly with their vintage garden/tea party vision. The house itself is a beautiful house with antique touches in every room. It was absolutely perfect for them. Brooklyn and Jakob wanted their wedding to feel like one big tea party with all sorts of mismatched vintage items. She had always collected vintage things, especially tea cups. It was something Brooklyn and her grandmother liked to do. Everything used in the wedding reception was from Brooklyn’s personal collection. All of the dishes and drinking glasses were mismatched and picked up here and there at thrift stores and antique stores. They also had a “love wall” which included an antique mirror with “love never fails” on it. The wall included pictures of all the couples in our family on their wedding day. It was a fun touch to see everyone’s wedding pictures and was one of the bride’s favorite memories of her wedding.

Caroline & Jake

Jake & Caroline fell in love as freshmen at the University of Georgia. Caroline played on the volleyball team, and Jake was coming in early to join the football team as a quarterback.

On their first official date, Jake and Caroline watched the sunset at the top of a UGA campus parking deck. Fast forward years later to a beautiful spring day in Athens, when Jake got down on one knee in front of a cross he built just for the occasion, and asked Caroline to be his wife. Caroline & Jake were ready to become husband and wife as soon as possible since Jake was moving to play for the Buffalo Bills. With the help of wedding planner Mary Ellen Baker, owner of Georgia Grace Weddings, they planned a glamorous, timeless, and sentimental celebration in a little over three months. FoxHall Resort’s Legacy Lookout was chosen as the venue as it was a perfect mixture of rustic and elegant, just like the couple.

On the morning of the wedding, the skies were overcast and showers came and went for hours. When it was time for Caroline to walk down the aisle, it was as if there was a blessing from above - the sun came out and surrounded the ceremony site with warmth. There was no sign of rain, no clouds in the sky. Caroline’s father escorted her down the aisle, elegantly lined with white rose petals.

After the heartfelt ceremony where Jake & Caroline shared personal vows to each other, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour complete with His & Hers signature cocktails.

Caroline’s drink was perfectly named “The Sweet Caroline” and for Jake’s drink, we came up with a take on a favorite

fans refer to faithful players as a “DGD” which stands for a “Damn Good Dawg.” Jake chose to name his drink the “DGD” which more politely stood for a “Darn Good Drink.” The personal touches flowed into the reception where the groom gave the welcome speech and the bride led the touches didn’t stop there. The bride & groom’s cakes were a gift from Jake’s aunt, owner of Cakes by Anna. Caroline, having a passion (and talent) for baking, lovingly for each guest. The cookies were wrapped with a custom sticker that read, “Baked with love by the bride”. After hours of celebrating, Caroline & Jake ran through a tunnel of sparklers to their getaway car.
