TIPS FROM A PROFESSIONAL

Mak g the traditi al traditi al

Wedding cakes are usually one of the first things couples think about when planning their weddings. Wedding cakes have been a tradition since medieval times. Different cultures have different versions and flavors of cakes and there are many customs regarding the cake. Do you want to save the top tier for your first anniversary? Many couples decide against this for various reasons and chose to order the same cake from their baker for their first anniversary. I have been recreating a “top tier” for one couple for ten years now.

One tradition that still stands is cutting the cake. Most weddings include the couple cutting the cake with both hands on one knife for their photo album. This represents the first thing they accomplish together in their marriage and feeding each other the first bite of cake can symbolize providing and caring for one another.

Wedding cakes can be naked-iced, rustic, decorated like a tree stump, covered in flowers, designed like a slab of marble, have succulent details, have elaborate/glamorous scrollwork, or elegant stenciling, have a boho theme with pampas grass and dried botanicals, along with many more motifs. More and more cakes have tantalizing flavors like spice cake with browned butter frosting, cookies and cream cake with buttercream infused with sandwich cookies, strawberry lemonade, champagne, orange, key lime, Italian cream, or even something fun like confetti or rainbow colors inside.

Traditionally, the groom’s cake would have a richer flavor such as chocolate, peanut butter, red velvet, or carrot cake. In years past, the groom's cake was a simple layered dessert cake. In a popular movie that came out in the late 80s, the groom’s cake was an armadillo shape with red velvet flavored cake.

There are many options to consider when ordering a groom’s cake. Some couples pick out the design together. It can complement a bride’s cake on the same table or staged somewhere alone. Brides sometimes like to pick out a groom’s cake as a surprise for a wedding gift. The

groom might know the bride is ordering a cake for their special day but not know the design or they could be completely surprised by having a groom’s cake at all. Another idea is to serve the groom’s cake at the rehearsal dinner the day before the wedding. Popular groom’s cake inspiration comes from numerous interests. Some are sports themed or show another interest like gaming playing chess, board games, or billiards. If a groom has a favorite vehicle, whether one he owns or a dream ride, that could be replicated. Musically inclined couples may choose a boom box, guitar pick, or instrument. Many couples wish to include their pets or other beloved animals onto the cake since they often cannot attend the wedding. Additionally favorite foods are represented in some groom’s cakes. Does he like hamburgers, hotdogs or pizza? How about beer, whiskey, wine, cola, or milk and cookies? Professions can also be turned into cake in the way of uniforms, a fire truck, or a stethoscope for a doctor.

Consider other options for your wedding besides just cake. Popular ideas from the past few years would be a cutting cake for pictures and for the couple to share but cupcakes for the guests. Dessert table buffets are a prominent option now. Several ideas would be cake pops, brownies, royal icing decorated sugar cookies, wedding cookies, chocolate chip or sugar sandwich cookies, cookie cakes, dessert cakes, crispy rice treats chocolate covered sandwich cookies, brownie bites, cupcakes, two-bite mini cupcakes, pies, petit fours, or dessert shots. For a brunch wedding, a sweet traditional cake might not be as popular a choice as pastries, donuts, scones, cinnamon rolls, muffins, banana bread or other similar items.

As you can see, couples are now thinking outside the box with a unique spin on their dessert offerings that represent the couple’s interests, history, and flavor preferences. Do not feel pressured to go with traditions if the untraditional seems a better fit for your dream wedding.

Tracey & Caleb

Tracey & Caleb have been together since they were 18. They met at the veterinary clinic where Tracey worked. It was love at first sight for Tracey as the moment she saw him she knew he was “the one”. They got married in July at 9 Oaks Farm in Monroe,Ga. Tracey shared “It was by far one of the best days ever. All of our vendors went above and beyond to make our day so special for not only us but our families and friends as well”.

A unique feature of the wedding was Tracey and Caleb decided to brand a piece of wood for their unity ceremony. The brand was the first initial of each of their names and a heart in the middle. They chose this because it was different from the usual unity ceremony. Tracy rodeos and her parents have a farm and they thought it would be cool to have their own brand. It was quite an interesting task to figure out how to get the brand hot enough to work. Caleb tried several things like a charcoal grill to a blowtorch to get it hot in a timely manner and not catch anything or anyone on fire!

There are so many memories that were so special for the couple from Caleb getting their sweet puppy Sadie as a wedding gift to the special dance they did for Tracey’s uncle and his daughter.....and oh my, the fireworks send off ! They feel truly blessed that God placed each and every person that was a part of the wedding ( vendors, guests, family) into our lives. Tracey will never forget the moment she walked down the aisle to the love of her life and felt it truly was magical. They couple have a handsome little three-year-old together who is their pride and joy.

Jas & Eth

Jasan and Ethan met in high school. Ethan had to move schools halfway through his junior year and met Jasan during his first day at the new high school. They became friends and started dating a few months later. They both attended UGA and worked together at the Olive Garden in Athens during college.

Ethan proposed in December under the big Christmas tree in downtown Athens. Ethan’s sister called in a favor and had a videographer stationed far enough away so Jasan didn’t get suspicious. He also had a group of friends and family hiding around the block so that after she said yes, they came out to celebrate.

Jasan & Ethan tied the knot in June 2022, twice. Her family planned several events prior to the actual wedding that took place over fi ve days: a pre-wedding ceremony called a vatna (where the family puts yogurt on the faces of the couple and acts as kind of a blessing over the rest of the events), a henna ceremony, a preengagement party,a horse and buggy ride through their small town

square, the actual wedding at the Gurdwara in Stone Mountain, a send off, and a reception.

Immediately after, they had the Athens wedding. Instead of a unity candle, the couple decided to build a bench. They built it themselves and put the final screw in during the ceremony. At the reception they used the bench as their guest book, and now the bottom side is covered with signatures that would usually be left unseen in a guest book. The thinking behind the bench was that they wanted something with more utility instead of pure symbolism--something solid that represents their relationship (they had to build it together, literally and figuratively). Ethan also liked the idea of using power tools on stage. The bench now resides in their foyer.

It was a wild ride and everyone was exhausted by the end of it, but it was wonderful to celebrate with the people they love and who love them.

TIPS FROM A PROFESSIONAL

W e d g r wedd g c y?

Through the centuries and across many cultures, wine has been a part of the wedding tradition. Wine and vineyards were considered the source of life, vitality, and love which were precious gifts from Dionysus, the ancient Greek god of wine (also called Bacchus in ancient Rome).

Today, wine ceremonies are becoming more and more popular signifying the joining or blending of families. A wine ritual can be included in the ceremony several different ways.

Like a lovely Bordeaux, your marriage is a beautiful blended representation of families coming together. At the beginning of the ceremony, both sides of the families will choose a bottle of wine, and pour a glass which is then presented as a gesture of goodwill to their incoming family member.

WINE WITH YOUR WEDDING

Business Partner: Stacey Cornelius

First Mountain Tasting Room

Another popular ritual is blending of wines, which usually takes place after the ring exchange. An empty carafe called a “Marriage Carafe” and two full wine glasses are placed on a small table near the couple. The couple blends the wines together in the carafe, the two pour the blended wine back into the glasses, and then toast each other.

Perhaps an intimate wine tasting with your wedding party before the big event is more your style. Who doesn’t enjoy wine with friends and family while getting ready for the big event? Your rehearsal dinner or reception will be the talk of the town if you include a wine pairing with the meal. Regardless of how a couple chooses to use wine as a part of their celebration, it will definitely add a touch of elegance.

Ansley d J es

Imagine meeting your future spouse in first grade. That’s exactly what happened to James and Ansley ! Way back in first grade they created a strong friendship which carried them through high school and into college at the University of Georgia. The couple began dating the summer before their senior year. James and Ansley knew as they drove home after their second date with huge smiles on their faces that they had found their forever. Throughout their four years of dating, they enjoyed attending Georgia football games, playing golf, and raising their golden retriever, Maverick.

When it came time to propose, James asked Ansley’s father for permission, purchased the perfect engagement ring, and reached out to Ansley’s cousin, Mary Ellen Baker to plan a surprise engagement. James knew the location had to be North Campus. He planned a trip to Athens telling Ansley they were there to celebrate her birthday. Mary Ellen, who owns Georgia Grace Weddings, helped James book an amazing photographer and they put their plan into motion. Before Ansley knew it, James was on one knee as both of their families watched from a nearby building.

Ansley & James knew they wanted a classic wedding with simple and clean designs. The most important factors to them were floral design and including small details that would express their personalities and interests. Mary Ellen went from proposal planner to wedding planner, and helped the couple choose a dream team of vendors which started with their venue, The Farm at High Shoals. Before they knew it, James and Ansley were surrounded by their friends and family on a beautiful day in May.

Looking back on their wedding day, they quickly agree their first look was one of the best moments because they were able to share their personal vows to each other all alone. James also puts the moment he saw Ansley turn the corner to walk down the aisle at the top of his list.

From their romantic outdoor ceremony, to their picturesque cocktail hour on the venue’s island, to their dance party reception featuring the band, Az-Izz...the whole day was truly one no one will ever forget.

Av ie & C n

Connor and Averie’s love story began at the University of West Georgia. They went to high school together but didn’t cross paths until college. They remained friends for a while, but as time went on they knew their was an undeniable spark between them.

A week after getting engaged, Averie found White Fox Cottage and was drawn to its simple elegance. They had decided that a spring or summer wedding fit them best and White Fox was the perfect canvas for Averie’s bright floral inspiration. Choosing wedding colors can be tricky, but they decided on pinks, corals, whites and lots of greenery. These colors represented Connor and Averie’s fun and positive personalities and suited them so well. Weddings by Epic brought Averie’s floral dreams to life. Wedding planning comes with lots of choices and hard decisions, but looking back it’s the memories made that are so special. Averie and her dad Michael had a surprise dance which included family and the wedding party. It was the talk of the night. Getting off the dance floor was the most difficult task, but they ended with Chick-fil-A sandwiches which was a great send off! This night will be unforgettable to them thanks to great vendors, family and friends who helped make it the night of their dreams.
