2 CLAUD BUTLER
PRO L OGUE Claud Butler is located in the historic steel town of Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire. The company can trace its history and experience in Cycles back over 135 years. The story began in 1880 when Fred Hopper established a cycle repair business in a former blacksmith’s shop in Barton-on-Humber, no more than 12 miles from our current location. Bicycle repairs soon gave way to manufacture and the business flourished. By 1906 F. Hopper & Co. was employing over 400 people, and by 1912 the company had developed export markets in Japan, India, South Africa and Australia. Shortly afterwards the company acquired the Elswick Cycle Company located near Newcastle, and in 1913 its name was changed to Elswick Hopper Cycle and Motor Company. In 1974 Elswick Hopper purchased Wearwell Cycles, a company so long established that reference to it could be found in the Bicycle Yearbook of 1872. In 1978 the Falcon Cycle Company was also acquired, and for some time it was operated as a subsidiary company.
In 1982 Elswick-Hopper Cycles and Falcon Cycles merged, and during the following year major changes took place in products, management and in the market. Initially the merged company was known as Elswick-Falcon Cycles, which was subsequently shortened to Falcon Cycles. Falcon Cycles limited can thus trace its heritage back to four of the eldest established cycle manufacturers in Britain F. Hopper & Co., Elswick Cycles, Coventry Eagle Cycles and Wearwell Cycle Company. Following acquisition by Tandem Group plc in November 1995, the company has gone from strength to strength. The company was then restructured in 2013 and is now named after it’s flagship brand Claud Butler. Throughout its long history, Claud Butler has maintained its progressive approach, and its willingness to utilise developments in new materials and design. As a result, the company’s range of cycles and accessories are proving increasingly popular throughout the world. The company dedicates it’s business to the Independent Bike Dealer networks with brands such as Scorpion, CBR and the flagship brand Claud Butler. From children’s bikes to mountain, touring, city, BMX, men’s bikes, women’s bikes, sports bikes and specialist lightweight racing thoroughbreds. Claud Butler creates all these and more, and into each go the care and craftsmanship you would expect from a company with over a century of experience, an enviable reputation for quality and an Olympic pedigree.

M OU N TAI N Our Mountain Bikes are broadly split into three categories to better identify their suitability for the type of riding you are likely to be doing: ATB, MTB and Performance.
ATB: FOR ROAD AND LIGHT OFF ROAD USE Some riders simply want the comfort and durability that a Mountain Bike design provides without needing all the high tech add ons. The leisure ATB is an ideal compromise utilising the latest Mountain Bike style gears to make light work of short uphill stretches. The generous profile tyres give great road holding and models with suspension forks also afford more comfort. MTB: FOR MOST RECREATIONAL OFF ROAD USE Mountain bikes have durable light Aluminium frames, powerful brakes for control and a wide range of gears for varied terrain. The riding position is semiupright so that you can clearly see the trail ahead. Front suspension is very important for comfort and control at speed when travelling over difficult ground. These bikes also feature performance off road tyres paired with strong double wall rims to ensure they can cope with difficult terrain.

PERFORMANCE: FOR THE MORE DEMANDING OFF ROAD RIDER At this level the design challenge is to provide maximum strength using the lightest components. Performance Mountain bikes have light Aluminium frames including hydro-formed tubes for extra stiffness and strength, powerful disc brakes for scrubbing speed, the lightest performance multi-speed gear systems and the ultimate performance off-road tyres. Front suspension really helps to ensure that the rider is in complete control in the most difficult terrain. These performance bikes are designed for and by, the most demanding off-road riders.

E X PL OR ER The Explorer range combines the conventional geometry of the Hybrid and the poise of the Mountain Bike and offers the best of both worlds. A wide spread of gears combined with 700c wheels and a low centre of gravity makes the bikes feel fast on tarmac, but with a semi off road tyre tread, gives you the option to take to the hills and trails if the mood takes you.

The bikes have hydro-formed top and down tubes for a more modern and elegant look and we’ve lengthened the head tubes slightly, to give a more comfortable riding position. We have repositioned the calipers of the disc brake equipped models to the chain stay to make it easier to fit mudguards and a carrier rack if desired and added a new and more sporty looking diamond frame at the higher end of the ladies range to cater for the more serious rider.

TREKKI NG The emphasis of Trekking bikes is on comfort, visibility and protection from the elements. Most of them are fitted with 700c wheels and with wider tyres and rims. These tyres are generally multi condition, in that they have a smooth centre line for efficiency on tarmac, but are capable of a little riding on unpaved surfaces. They are fitted with gears which have a wide spread of ratios for effortless cycling.

The riding position is more upright too, giving good visibility in traffic. These bikes are often “equipped�, meaning that they often come factory fitted with mudguards, carrying racks and adjustable rise stems for added comfort. All in all, the trekking bike is the best all-rounder there is. It suits the majority of riding that you might wish to do. It is perfect for tarmac riding, even on longer journeys, and yet it is more than capable of being taken onto canal towpaths and forestry tracks.

WANT TO RACE? The bikes have a top tube routed rear gear cable to keep it out of the mud, and a flattened underside to the top tube for comfort when you need to shoulder the bike. WANT TO CHECK OUT THAT BRIDLEWAY YOU ALWAYS PASS ON YOUR ROAD RIDE? All bikes are fitted with Kenda Kwick CX tyres which offer a good mix of speed on tarmac, but added bite and cornering grip off road.
NEED A WINTER ROAD BIKE? Simply switch the tyres to a road tyre from our parts and accessory range, (or maybe even a second set of wheels) add mudguards and you have a competent road machine.

Should any original component prove defective in terms of workmanship within its warrant period, Claud Butler will replace it. Warranty periods for components are as follows: Rigid frames and forks:- Lifetime Warranty All other components including carbon fibre products:2 years from date of retail purchase. This warranty does not include labour and transportation charge. The company cannot accept any responsibility for consequential or special damages. This warranty applies only to the original retail purchaser who must produce proof of purchase in order to validate any claim. This warranty applies only in the case of defective components and does not cover the effects of normal wear or damage caused by accident, abuse, excessive loads, neglects, improper assembly, improper maintenance or the addition of any item inconsistent with the original intended use of the bicycle. No bicycle is indestructible and no claims can be accepted for damage caused by improper use, competition use, stunt riding, ramp jumping, or similar activities. Claims must be submitted through your retailer. Your statutory rights are not affected by the foregoing.
54 WARRANTY
Paint finish is covered for a period of 2 years against any manufacturing defects. The defect must not be due to any external influences such as accident damage, climatic, thermal, chemical or industrial pollution, insufficient care or maintenance. This must be verified by your retailer at the time of inspection. Claud Butler bicycles conform to national safety standards, please refer to the sticker fitted to the bike for the specific safety standard employed throughout its design and construction. All information and specifications within this brochure are correct at time of going to press. Claud Butler reserve the right to amend or improve specification without prior notice.
