CLAUDIA CIARPELLA PRODUCT DESIGNER
ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Claudia, i am an italian product designer established in Copenhagen. I like working as a designer because it is a challenging job: there is always something new to learn and to work on. I am really fond of travelling and nature (my next dream travel is Iceland!) that I impress in my memory through huge pictures albums. Here in Denmark, I also found out my passion for the radio being a speaker at Radiopizza, the radio of italians in Dk.

D2 DOMESTIC DIGITAL PIANO Master degree project in collaboration with KORG Italy, the Italian department of Korg Japan, multinational company for electronic musical instruments. I decided to work on the music field to explore how design can affect such a technical sector.
Sara STUDENT
Gianluca AMATEUR BAND
ANALYSIS I started my analysis following the WH questions: WHat, WHo, WHere identifying 4 typical piano-users with different needs and habbits.
Giovanni PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN
Christina TRENDSETTER
CONCEPT D2 is a customizable piano that can be implemented while the musician ability grow up and arranged in a way so that it can best suit the user style and type of music.
DEVELOPMENT Willing to be more friendly - especially to a non professional user - the piano takes inspiration from the electrodomestic appliances language. For the interface, I implemented a touch system instead of switches. A digital Oled-based screen replaces the traditional music sheet.
PROCESS The design process has seen several phases: First, the acquisition of internal know-how that includes learning how technically a piano works and from which parts it is composed. Second, I acquired the manufacture know-how visiting the manufacture companies (Extrusion and Metal Processing, Plastic molding, Painting, Assembly plants) Third, the review with internal musicians and technicians who were giving me a feedback on the feasibility of my project.
FLEXIBLE APPLIQUE Clip is the result of a project made In collaboration with ULTRALUCE, a light company who produce LED powered lighting system. www.ultraluce.it
CONCEPT Clip takes inspiration from a simple hairclip. The flipping movement is transferred to the lamp: in this way it can
provide two different lighting conditions based on the different reflection of the Led onto the wall surface. When the light source is located closer to the wall, it creates a strong and
focused lighting that acts as a traditional home lighting, when it is farther produces a soft, diffused light, suitable for relaxation and intimacy. The lamp is made of polycarbonate.
TECHNOLOGY To supply the led situated on top with electricity, I used the screen printing technique which consists of a conductive printing made of silver paste. The two silver stripes placed along the sides of the lamp are not just decorations but functional conductors carrying electricity to the lamp’s led.
PROTOTYPE With the help of a led technician I build up a working prototype (shapewise it is referred to the first version) to test the effectiveness of the electrical system and the handiness of the flipping movement.
OUTDOOR PUBLIC FURNITURE Multigeneration Park is the result of the bachelor degree project made in collaboration with conlastic during the internship at GP designpartners in Vienna. The aim is to create public furniture for all, allowing differently aged people to share the same spaces. www.conlastic.com
PLAYGROUND
HI-ACTIVITY AREA
RELAXING AREA
ANALYSIS I identified 3 different areas: the playgroung (designed for kids), the hi activity area where to do sport and the relaxing area where to sit and rest. The common language of this family of products make the diferent areas, homogeneous. A subsequent analysis compares the new product with the traditional available furniture.
VOILA’: ROTATING BENCH
BALILLA: FOOTBALL DOOR
PROTOTYPE Two products of the family won the SUNLAB Competition and had been prototyped to be presented at Rimini Outdoor Fair.
Making the prototype I was able to experience the process especially about drawing communication and technical details. Made of steel pipes and rubber.
CHILDREN’S TOY I worked as a freelance for Clementoni, a company who produces children’s toys. Those are two projects I did for them together with Heyteam Design Collective. www.clementoni.it *designed with HeyTeam Design Collctive
CONCEPT I was asked to draw different vases with the shape of vegetables for this gardening toy. The aim was to give personality to each charachter.
After having sketched several solutions we choose three subjects with the company and modeled it in 3d.
PROTOTYPE The toy has first been prototyped through 3d printing and then industrialized for production.
CONCEPT I was asked to draw an activity gym for small kids. The top part is interactive: there are two side musical button and stars roll when the central handle is pulled.
CHILDREN FURNITURE Artù is a kid’s furniture system. It includes four pillows and a small table, stacking all the pieces they can build a tower, the scene to make a story around. Artù aims as well to teach kids to tidy up in a playful way. SUN 2010 competition. *designed with HeyTeam Design Collective

SAND BUCKET School Project: The task was to innovate an ordinary object, making it more interesting for the user. I was given the sand bucket.
ANALYSIS I started the analyis researching about behaviour, so how kids use the sand bucket; looking for interesting products that are more developed than the classic basic sand bucket; finding out problems to solve.
CONCEPT I found out that kids get easily bored about carrying stuff and about simple toys. That’s why I transformed the classical bucket in a bag: the body of the bucket (made of soft HDPE) can be folded and flattened, while the handle can be extended to be worn as a shoulder bag.
Littletraveler KINDERGARTEN PLAYGROUND Little Traveler is a collection of four playground toys based on the transportation topic. The wide visibility, in order that adults can look after kids, makes them especially suitable for schools. *designed with HeyTeam Design Collective
SCREWABLE TRESTLE Vito takes inspiration from the carpenter’s clamp: screwing the legs on the dedicate holes, the top will be tighten and fixed to the structure. *designed with HeyTeam Design Collective
DESIGN COLLECTIVE Since the 3rd year of university, I have been working with my friends Paolo and RIccardo to build the HeyTeam, a young design collective. Together we build our office in a container and our website, did competitions, exhibitions and self production. Moreover we worked for companies like Clementoni, Sige and Macagi www.heyteam.it
