01 Mersad: urban observatory DESIGN YEAR: Graduation project

L O C A T I O N : Amman,Jordan

PROJECT BRIEF

Numerous issues envelops Amman, from Economical difficulties, infrastructure, environmental to uncontroled urban sprawl. My project is a Regional Urban Observatory, that doesn’t only benefit Amman but acts as a module for the region itself. Encouraging crtical thinking, giving the tools and training needed for urban research and development promoting sustainability while providing a platform for debates and initiatives concerning the city.

THE SITE

An abandoned scar in the city, left by developers. Stratigic location, on the split point between East and West Amman, joining 3 neighborhoods. The site itself is a 9000 sqm, 40m depth pit, that holds the memory of 3 eras. in which there was a Byzantine grape press, a Roman quarry site and now an abandoned investment.

CONCEPT

Water shortage being one of the main issues in our city, that has been lately incountering flash flods. Mersad provides a 3 dimensional solution, a pop up parking, that holds a water tank underneath, a big water reservois that benefits from the site’s natural edges an Urban observatory that exhibits the issues and an experience were the rawness of the scars left is open for the visitor to experience.

Inspired by “POP-UP Third Nature architecture office in Denmark have presented the idea of a pop up parking structure, that acts as a water reservois, parking and urban space, due to the climatic nature of the city and flash flods. the edges of the land are of 3 types, the back area towards the upper street is surrounded by rock from 3 sides which acts as a natural water reservoir. One side is rubble while the other is a dam structure left by the previous investors. Natural edges drove the segmentation of the land, two reservoirs, the biggest benefiting from the rock formation and slope of land, while the smaller acts as an outlet, a pop up paring structure, and an exhibition . the middle area has been left raw, to show the overgrown scar with the possibility of inputing removable structures, to benefit the nearby community by providing workshop spaces.

02 Stalasso shading and rain collection DESIGN YEAR: 5th SEMESTER:2ND

12

L O C A T I O N : Amman,Jordan

OVERVIEW

Jordan being the 5th water scarce country in the world more concious decisions should be taken towards water collection and awerness. SABE’s terrace lacks greenary , our design proposes greenary with rain collected water for irrigation while the structure itself will also work as a shading element. GJU’s logo acted as base for the basic geomtry of the structure while triangles where integrated to strengthen the structure itself, fractals and L-systems inspired the trellis pipage system design forming a shaded green oasis

RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS

Research involved rain collection systems, trellis structures and the type of plants that can be used in our area and use the structure. coding algorithms of triangles derived from squares which resemble a truss structure that is self supporting and light at the same time. Growth patterns and how can they be adapted to a trellis structure to hold itself while acting as a collection pipe at the same time,

block 01 salalem :rethinking the commercial 03 DESIGN YEAR: 2nd SEMESTER: 2nd

L O C A T I O N : Amman,Jordan

PROJECT BRIEF

located in a commercial strip envoloping old reidential neighborhoods, the aim of this project was to re-think how the commercial block how it affects the area around it, and what defines it.

THE SITE

Wadi Saqra street, towards the old Amman downtown, in between two of the oldest inhibited mountains Jabal Al Weibdeh and Jabal Amman. The main street itself has developed with time to a commercial strip excluding the residential houses on the slope of the mountain on both sides. hence disconnecting them and making the area conjusted in the morning and deserted at night,

CONCEPT

since it is hard to maintain the commercial function of the street without making the gap between “Up and Down bigger, I intoduced the idea of an urban stairs to act as a linkage, where underneath it, it will hold workshops for the nearby residence; and on top it there will be commercial retail shoops selling the good of the workshops. a winwin solution.

Project Brief:

Rethinking the residential complex, within one of the the modernity movements and in respect to the site. With the community in mind, we had to design 3 types of affordable living units for midincome families; 80 m2, 120m2, and 160m2 in addition to a co-op market and any extra functions that might add to the sense of community.

The Site:

located on one of the bussiest streets in Amman, Wadi Saqra street also acts as a boarder between east and west Amman. The site itself is surrounded by a good sum of dangerous activities especially towards the main street or lower grounds.

Concept:

Influence the social petterns and interactions within this context, by taking the layers present in this community and their overlapping to create an inclusive, safe and healthy place.

The primary access and circulation principles relate to the historic residential complexes of the city , establishing the central court as a focal node of everyday domestic life. The system of staircases branching outwards from the main court establishes a potential for constantly changing patterns of connectivity and movement between units and spatial pods generating the dynamics for an intricate interactivity; multiplicities of experiential and programmatic plots within semi-private domains. Looking In: Towards the enclosed space (courtyard) by making the core circulation open to it, and the main living spaces situated towards it. Looking Out: Towards the street - eyes on the street, commercial space looking out, while it is occupied most hours of the day. with balconies also looking out and the courtyard open visually out. The facades to the north stand out as compact and precise surfaces, the wall openings and the rising silhouette give the facades a dynamic character. On the contrary, on the south side, the balconies, facing the courtyard, appear freely in different positions on the façade. Access to all residential units [lifts or stairs] is enabled through the main court .The movementscheme establishes the atrium as the urban frontier and communal forum of the complex, activated constantly. The scheme ensures that the residents’ perception does not categorize the atrium as a high-end backyard of poor relevance to their daily living routines. Programmatically, the court acts as a raised datum detached from the disturbances of city life. The perception of the court as a reference zone is encouraged.

INTERIOR AND RENOVATION: BEIT IBRAHIM HASHEM

Project Brief:

House of Ibrahim Hashim-Beit Ibrahim Hashem- is a 2 floors house built on an inclined triangular land, situated between two streets in Jabal Amman area completed circa 1928 it was the home of the former prime minister at that time “Ibrahim Hashim” and now it is right beside the German Jordanian’s School of Architecture and Built Environment (SABE) The project was to find use of the lower shops (situated on the main street) as they are now abandond and tofollow a certain architecture movement while doing so .

The Site:

Jabal Amman area in the Center of Jordan’s capital, Amman. Situated between the Rainbow street and downtown Amman, the area itself has been abandond long time before till the university started investing in the nearby buildings; Therefore it has always beena troublesome area, with theft, drugs and other types of dangerous activities.

Concept:

Working on the environmental movement, my main idea is up-cycling and recycling, focusing on one of the shops being an organic study cafe with flexible gallery space and display for the student’s work through out the semester. hence i’m trying to use as much old materials found in ibrahim hashim as possible and as much waste materials from the university itself

C REFUGEE CAMP UNWOMEN CARAVANS

collabritive project between gju students and al zaatari camp refugees L O C A T I O N : Al Zaatari Refugee camp, Jordan

The task was to make the area of the UNWOMEN caravans more “Homey” and child friendly , However the challenge was that eveything has to be pinned down and that no greenary is allowed to be planted. I was reponsible for designing the children board games to be drawn on concrete on the ground as well as one of the caravan’s designs that read “Damascus is in the soul” in Arabic Calligraphy.
