Every season new trends in color and design arrive in home decor. There is a reason some looks never go out of style‌they are timeless. Just because a look transcends time doesn’t mean it has to be stuffy or old. Rather, timeless is chic, beautiful and reassuring. A truly pretty look, these gorgeous florals are soft and romantic, adding a delicate beauty to any room that will last today and into tomorrow.

More than just the latest fad, the farm to table trend has become a revolution of sorts, and it justs keeps growing. We’re getting back to basics, exploring simpler times when food was local and our meals were planned around seasonal items. Farmer’s markets are all the rage from New Jersey to California

and shopping them helps us to feel connected to our communities and inspires us to create fresh healthy meals for our loved ones. Art is a great way to bring the trend home. Kitchen and dining room walls can now be a reminder to take time to enjoy the good, and simple things in life.

How did you become an illustrator? When I was in art school I was commissioned to draw a series of book illustrations for a local author. That was the first time I realized getting paid to draw was an actual thing. I went on to get my MFA in Illustration from Savannah College of Art & Design and took off from there.

If you weren’t an illustrator, what would you be doing? I’m a big foodie. I’d buy a food truck and park it on a mountain. All you can eat burritos for hikers at the top! A

Illustration is really on trend - why do you think that is? Young artists coming out of art school are tech savvy and taking advantage of design software to create art that is fast to develop and adaptable. There are so many outlets for independent artists to get their work out to the public and young illustrators are putting themselves at the front of that movement - using social media sites like Facebook and Pinterest, and customizing their own products to sell on sites like Zazzle, Café Press, Society6, and Etsy.

B

What advice would you give an illustrator starting out? I learned a ton from exploring new techniques and making mistakes. Don’t be afraid to try new things and fail. Make that a part of your development. Also, create a ton and learn to edit yourself. Don’t let one ugly piece in your portfolio hurt your chances of getting work.

almost everyone is an artist; some are sculptors, others painters, jewelers or dancers. The man selling me soup at the night market is also a lead musician at the village temple. Yanik, my host’s son, is a famous Balinese dancer, and every woman knows how to craft the beautiful daily offerings made of palm leaves and flowers. What would the world look like if ruled by artists? Probably something like Bali! From the beauty and kindness of its people, the color of the spices, the fabrics and the daily offerings, to the green of the rice paddies, the rock-carved temples and the Ikat weavings of Tenganan village, Bali was a bath of inspiration. My morning bike rides allowed me to appreciate early day life in Bali. On those rides I was greeted by children traveling with their brooms so they could help clean their school in the morning. Then I would ride back to the homestay and have a delicious fruit breakfast. Working from my terrace-studio I watched skilled carpenters build a roof with traditional tools; a multitude of finely bent posts created the most exquisite pattern. I was charmed by the sparrows and dragonflies chasing bugs, butterflies feeding on beautiful flowers, and geckos and lizards passing by. All of this was part of the beautiful routine that made my stay in Bali so magical. On weekends (although in Bali that concept doesn’t exist - they work everyday and relax everyday) I would go off to explore temples, museums, gardens and admire artisans at their craft. I also hired Gede, a nephew of the family, to teach me Indonesian once a week after school. Balinese children are trilingual early in life. The speak their mother tongue, Balinese, then learn the national language Indonesian at school and also English. It is a real blessing to be able to find yourself in a completely different culture and see how other people have created their world. The omnipresent beauty of nature and architecture greatly influenced my work. The bright colors I used to paint my Ornithology Collection were strongly influenced by the Javan kingfisher bird. The intricacy of stone and wood carvings greatly inspired the companion motifs and damask I have drawn for the Coutellerie Collection and also the Fancy Corkscrew tiles.

What’s all the rage? Greige of course. One of the hottest trends in color is greige, a combination of gray and beige blended into a perfect neutral shade. With both the cool tones of gray and the warmth of beige, this color is an amazing fit in the home. A fresh alternative to more traditional neutrals, greige is soothing and ethereal, pairing incredibly well with shades of yellow, black and soft greens for a look that makes your say “I’m home.”

Why does collaborating with artists work? It’s all about communication. You get to see your ideas through different eyes and you feel the collaboration within the art. It’s double the satisfaction!

How did you get started in this industry? Years ago I started a small greeting card company with my sister that became a stationery manufacturing company. Throughout the years I’ve evolved into what I do today, art directing for home decor products.

How long have you been creating art? Since I can remember I’ve loved drawing, creating and the challenge of finding something different and fresh. When it appeals to others, it’s even better.

How would you describe your studio? Fun! Always, always, always have fun - that’s what sparks creativity. Drama is checked at the studio door.

B

When you are stuck for inspiration what do you do? That never happens! I don’t remember ever feeling stuck there’s always something new to do. But if you’re ever truly stuck, put that project aside and start something new. There’s always a list waiting to be done.

Meet the new home decor addicts‌teenagers. The under 18 crowd is design savvy and they know what they want. Influenced by design shows, magazines and celebrities, being on top of the hottest trends is the name of the game. Kids love the idea of creating

How do you stay on top of market trends? Gretchen: You have to love design and home decor to be in this industry, so being on top of trends is an important part of what we do. We attend major gift and licensing shows in Atlanta, New York, Chicago and both Maison & Objet and Ambiente in Europe. Then there are the magazines, and the shopping and the blogs ‌ and then... we take all of this information and share it with our artists and our customers.

What would your customers say about working with you? Kat: That we are approachable, deadline driven, adaptable and creative. Those are really four things that we strive for every day. When it comes down to it, our job is to deliver incredible art and designs to our customers, so we do whatever it takes to make that happen.

B

How do your work with your artists? Gretchen: Our job is to communicate with, guide and inspire our artists. We want them to be successful! We work closely with our artists to help develop their licensing portfolios so that they can create art and designs that our customers (and their customers!) will want to put on their products.

C

What is the best part of your job? Kat: I love seeing the samples of finished product, especially at retail. It is such a thrill to know that you worked on a project that has made it to retail. Gretchen: I really enjoy collaborating with our artists, designers and our licensees/manufacturers to develop successful products. Seeing art come to life! Nothing is more exciting than seeing Wild Apple art on something in a store! (Except maybe sending pics and samples to the artists! Love hearing their excitement!)

What is Wild Apple’s role in the Art Copyright Coalition? Wild Apple was a founding member in the early 2000s. Currently, I am the president of the ACC.

How does the Art Copyright Coalition fight copyright infringements? The ACC battles illegal copies in several ways. ACC members travel to China twice a year to walk the Canton and Jinhan Fairs in order to search out counterfeits and confront the infringers. Using a combination of education, persuasion, embarrassment, threats, and persistent presence, the ACC has seen a significant reduction in the amount of stolen art & design over the last two years. The ACC has also worked with trade show management to force infringers to remove product from their booths. We have an active communication network that alerts members to infringers and potential infringers. Members are active in using the ACC template for a Cease & Desist letter. In some cases individual members take legal action against copyright violators.

What is in the future for the Art Copyright Coalition? In addition to continuing our ongoing activities, the ACC has an important and growing area to address. The amount of counterfeits on the popular Alibaba website and its subsidiaries (Taobao, Tmall) is astounding, not just in art & design, but across all product categories. Alibaba’s recent IPO has put pressure on the company to clean up the infringement problem, and they have put a procedure in place to challenge copyright violators. However, it is no easy task working through the red tape and bureaucratic labyrinth. The ACC needs to help and encourage its members through the process.

Please support the ACC by visiting www.artcopyright.net. www.wildapple.com
