Teach With Us! Derek Anderson Instructor, Light Commercial HVAC Certificate Program students’) technical growth that leads “I enjoy theirto(thefinancial independence. ” This is the reason that Derek Anderson has been teaching with the Center for Continuing Education for over ten years! He believes that as competition in the global markets continues to increase, many might find themselves left behind. With the influx of mergers and acquisitions, coupled with reduction in workforce policies, skill sets that were viewed as valuable are now obsolete. The recession has caused a transformation in the service industry. While it was commonplace to be trained on the job to some degree, it is now essential to secure professional credentials to work in its respective industry. HVAC is no different; the minimum requirement to work in the industry is an EPA certification that covers Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. However, that will only allow you to handle refrigerants. Becoming familiar with a host of theories, such as psychometrics, thermodynamics, heat load, calculation, duct design and Ohm's law, is necessary in understanding how to apply proper techniques and principles that will ensure the safety of the public at large. HVAC credentials may start with EPA certification. However, many employers are requiring third-party technician competency certification. The scope of the industry covers certifications, diplomas and degrees from Associates to Masters, but to operate and own a HVAC company, someone must secure a state air conditioning license by taking the six-hour exam. The license requires both practical and formal education. There is something for everyone who takes advantage of securing credentials in a market that is expected to grow 36% in the next eight years.

In case of a weather related closing, or any other type of emergency closing, the University has an extensive media contact list for such emergency situations. For information about all radio and TV outlets that will be contacted upon closing, please visit the University’s main webpage at www.clayton.edu. If the institution remains open, we recognize that there may be special circumstances that pertain to individual students that are more serious than those that apply to the majority. So, students are advised to use their best judgment about their safety and that of their families in those situations, and to consult with individual faculty members about making up lost time. In the event that other instructional sites are closed, every effort will be made to contact students and instructors by phone and/or email.
