What is Georgia Work Ready? To successfully compete in a global economy, companies must have access to long-term, quantified labor pools. Georgia Work Ready was designed to build the nation's best workforce and ensure companies have the talent they need to stay ahead of the competition. It is based on a skills assessment, certification and skills gap training for job seekers and a job profiling system for businesses. Building on a strong foundation, Georgia Work Ready includes a pathway for communities to certify a skilled workforce and demonstrate their commitment to improving their high school graduation rate. By identifying both the needs of business and the available skills of Georgia's workforce, the state can more effectively generate the right talent for the right jobs. The Center for Continuing Education is your resource for obtaining workforce training skills. We offer quality instruction in computer applications for those who complete this basic training or for those of you who have mastered the basics and are ready to move into more advanced training. Inclement Weather: In the case of any weather that might cause a disruption in the normal events, Clayton State University has an Emergency Weather Plan that includes the Office of University Relations contacting a wide variety of Metro Atlanta news media outlets that report weather-related closings. In case of a weatherrelated closing, or any other type of emergency closing, the University has an extensive media contact list for such emergency situations. For information about all radio and TV outlets that will be contacted upon closing, please visit the University's main webpage at www.clayton.edu.During any potential emergency weather situation, information about Clayton State’s plans will also be available on the University’s web page and through the University’s main telephone number (678-466-4000). At times of bad weather or other emergencies, University officials make decisions on whether or not to close the campus based on public safety reports and other considerations. In such cases, the safety and security of the majority of students is a prime consideration. If the University is closed, then classes are cancelled for all students. If the institution remains open, we recognize that there may be special circumstances that pertain to individual students that are more serious than those that apply to the majority. So, students are advised to use their best judgment about their safety and that of their families in those situations, and to consult with individual faculty members about making up lost time. In the event that other instructional sites are closed, every effort will be made to contact students and instructors by phone and/or email. Students and Instructors Praising iLearn for Math Success! Janet Winkler, Executive Director for the Center for Continuing Education is very excited about the progress students are making both in the math curriculum developed by iLEARN, a think tank educational company. Math Success offered through CE as Math Success classes as well as in Math 97a Learning Support course. She reports that non-traditional students in both classes have told her how beneficial the courses have been. One student reported “I understand fractions for the first time in my life!” Another expressed appreciation for the fact that she no longer has to worry about being embarrassed in class since all instruction is provided one-on-one with the computer and headphones- yet an instructor is always available to answer her questions.

Kathy Garrison, Interim Director, Center for Academic Success says “Students, who in the past have been intimidated by math, are being inspired to work harder with iLearn’s self-paced, mastery approach.”

"I have always feared Math and all the components to it. I just couldn't get it. This term being introduced to Math through iLearn has made me conquer my fear of Math and actually grasp the different concepts of it. Though I've had to repeat a few lessons, it was well worth it.

I think iLearn should be taught on all levels of Math courses; it is fantastic! I certainly hope that you continue teaching through iLearn, and I just wished it would have been available years ago. Keep up the good work, iLearn! It has been most beneficial to me." -Avery Roebuck

GONE with the WIND

From its publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind has won acclaim for its depiction of Georgia during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Join Peter Bonner – author, lecturer, founder of Historical & Hysterical Tours, and recognized expert on Gone With the Wind – as he reveals the true stories from Jonesboro and the Atlanta area that provided the inspiration for Margaret Mitchell’s best-selling novel. While researching for a book on the Battle of Jonesboro, Peter Bonner noticed a number of local recollections that seemed very familiar to characters and events depicted in Gone With the Wind. Further research led Peter to a letter written by Margaret Mitchell in 1936 in which she stated, “. . . all the incidents in the book are true.” Join Peter Bonner on Sunday, May 15 & 22 from 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM, as he shares these fascinating true stories of a bygone era. You are sure to enjoy these fact-filled lectures with a focus on the human side of the story by an entertaining historian who states that, “History doesn’t have to be just a bunch of boring dates!”

Gone With The Wind – True Stories from Jonesboro At the time of the publishing of her book in 1936, Margaret Mithcell stated that the incidents recorded in it were true. However, this fact would be overlooked until 1996 (60 years Later) when Peter Bonner discovered the connection while researching data for a book about the Battle of Jonesboro. Hear about the Civil War battle that changed the course of history (Jonesboro) and the real life connections to Margaret Mitchell's famous work. Presented by Peter Bonner, internationally known storyteller and the recognized expert on the Gone With The Wind connections. 114CLEI311 Sun May 15 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, 1 session $20 CE Main Campus with Peter Bonner

Gone With The Wind – True Stories from the Atlanta area Beginning with a short synopsis of the first presentation, Peter will once again enthrall the audience with his Gone With the Wind connections/ Peter will take the listerners to locations in and around Atlanta to not only tell the true stories but give connections to other parts of the GWTW legacy. This will be the only time the information will be shared prior to the publishing of Peter's second book. 114CLEI312 Sun May 22 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, 1 session $20 CE Main Campus with Peter Bonner

Digital Photography I

Would you like to take better pictures, consistently? Do you want to get more organized with your digital photo collection, or edit your digital images to make each one look its best? In just two Saturday sessions, this hands-on course covers the skills that are needed to become a better digital photographer.

Whether you are brand new to the digital world, or have recently jumped in, this course will take the guesswork out and help you become comfortable with this new technology that has opened up a whole new world of photographic possibilities. The course will teach you how to use your digital camera to create great photos in a variety of conditions, how to manage your digital photo files, and print your pictures efficiently from digital sources.

It begins with camera skills. The course explains the purpose of those unfamiliar controls found on digital cameras, and how they can be used to get better results. Students will learn how to avoid exposure mistakes and how exposure controls can be used to create dramatic photographic effects. You will also learn valuable shooting techniques: how to choose the right lighting, when and how to use flash, and easy techniques for better photo composition. The second skill is organization. Students will learn how to manage a growing collection of images on the computer, how to save steps when downloading images from the camera and how to back up photo collections for safekeeping. You will also learn software tools for "tagging" images so they are easy to find later and how to automate the process of emailing images.

Fantasy Inspired Cakes Teen Cake Camp (12-16) Teens learn how to read a recipe, pick ingredients, use kitchen utensils including whisks, measuring cups, spoons, mixer and also use a decorating bag, icing tips, create a rose, work with fondant and proper refrigeration for certain icings. Cleanliness and cooperative team work is also taught. Of course fun is a prime ingredient as well! Fantasy is the theme for this five session class. We'll take Color Concepts from the Twilight and Alice in Wonderland films to create a topsy turvy cake and sculpt fantasy gumpaste flowers in deep plums, blacks and silver. Supplies may be purchased from the Instructor before or at class for extra baked goods, cupcake filling tip, icing bags, icing, powdered sugar, luster dusts, decorating tips and artist brushes. The topsy turvy cake created is a "dummy cake" on styrofoam forms and embellished with gumpaste, royal icing and fondant. We will work on this cake all week. These are the display cakes you see in professional bakeries. The gumpaste flowers can be stored up to a year. The cake you create in class will last for display at least a year! 114CYOU201 Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri Jun 20-24 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, 5 sessions $149 CE Main Campus with Kelly Frosting
