Prepare for a new career in the healthcare industry! With a growing population of retiring senior citizens, from 400,000 today to 1.6 million in the next 30 years, metropolitan Atlanta is facing the need for more healthcare workers to care for this older population. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that occupations in the healthcare industry are projected to be some of the fastest growing sectors in the job market over the next five to ten years. The Atlanta Regional Commission reports an estimated growth of 275,000 new jobs in the healthcare industry alone in the metro Atlanta area in the next three decades. Clayton State University Center for Continuing Education, along with partners Condensed Curriculum International (CCI), Boston Reed College, and Gatlin Education, is proud to offer programs to train you for these crucial jobs in today’s workforce. Our on-campus programs include Medical Coding Specialist, Orthopedic Technician, Clinical Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, and Nurse Aide Training. We also offer a wide variety of training courses online which include Hospital Coding & CCS Prep, Medical Transcription, and others. Most of our programs prepare students for certification in specific areas of the healthcare industry to give greater credibility and clout to the training provided. If you are seeking a new career in a growing field, you may want to consider training for a healthcare career! View our upcoming courses in the catalog, and attend our upcoming information sessions to learn more about these training programs. Our building and offices will be closed the following dates: December 24 - January 2, January 17, May 28-30 Inclement Weather: In the case of any weather that might cause a disruption in the normal events, Clayton State University has an Emergency Weather Plan that includes the Office of University Relations contacting a wide variety of Metro Atlanta news media outlets that report weather-related closings. In case of a weatherrelated closing, or any other type of emergency closing, the University has an extensive media contact list for such emergency situations. For information about all radio and TV outlets that will be contacted upon closing, please visit the University's main webpage at www.clayton.edu.During any potential emergency weather situation, information about Clayton State’s plans will also be available on the University’s web page and through the University’s main telephone number (678-466-4000). Please do not call the Office of Public Safety,

or the Office of University Relations. At times of bad weather or other emergencies, University officials make decisions on whether or not to close the campus based on public safety reports and other considerations. In such cases, the safety and security of the majority of students is a prime consideration. If the University is closed, then classes are cancelled for all students. If the institution remains open, we recognize that there may be special circumstances that pertain to individual students that are more serious than those that apply to the majority. So, students are advised to use their best judgment about their safety and that of their families in those situations, and to consult with individual faculty members about making up lost time. In the event that other instructional sites are closed, every effort will be made to contact students and instructors by phone and/or email.

I learned so much throughout the process that I am sure we will be able to implement in our programs here at Clayton State. LERN has so many procedures and practices that help enhance the quality and growth of the programs. It is my hope that we will be able to utilize many of LERN’s proven techniques for program planning and management to take our own programs to new levels of quality and success!” -Seth Davis

• We applaud Jeniveve Crichlow-Eason, who successfully completed the Web Design Certificate Program offered by the Center for Continuing Education. “I have always been interested in Web Design, so when I saw that it was offered, I jumped at the chance to take the course. I was very surprised how easy and interesting the course was. I was skeptical that I would be able to make an effective web page after such a short time (8 to 10 weeks), however, it was true. My teacher was very good at teaching how to create a web site from the ground up and we were also taught how to compete in today’s web market. I am very pleased that I took this course!” -Jeniveve Crichlow-Eason • Karen LaMarsh joins our team as Director of Professional Development and Training and has been elected President-Elect for GAEA.

Clayton State University Offers Innovative Approach to Teaching Math and Increasing Student Success Rates Janet Winkler, Executive Director, Clayton State University Center for Continuing Education, is passionate about improving the passing rate for math students served by the University. Having just completed a pilot course using this new approach, she reports that the adults who participated were in need of math remediation for a variety of reasons. Some of these students needed to improve basic math skills for workwhile others needed to understand new math concepts as preparation to take the COMPASS test to enter the University. Most of the students had not been in school in a number of years and found the class to be highly effective as well as a nonthreatening learning environment. Ms. Winkler is working with the Provost of Academic Affairs, Dr. Michael Crafton, Dean of the College of Information and Mathematical Sciences, Dr. Lila Roberts, Interim Associate Vice-President for Enrollment Management, Dr. Mark Dadonna, and Interim Director of Learning Support, Ms. Kathy Garrison to determine how best to provide this new curriculum to students who need to pass the COMPASS exam. The ultimate goal of their efforts is to help improve student success rates for graduation. The new curriculum was developed by Dr. Robert Collins, Founder and CEO of an education think-tank company called iLearn. Dr. Collins has spent his working life in the field of education researching how learning takes place and turned his knowledge into practical methods for providing individualized, online math instruction that is targeted to each student’s gaps in knowledge with pinpoint accuracy. The pilot course offered in the fall through the Center for Continuing Education was delivered in a classroom setting with a qualified math instructor who was able to provide individualized assistance and instruction to each student as needed. Using the self-paced computer curriculum gave the instructor the freedom to work one on one with students rather than trying to teach an entire class of students at varying levels of math skills. The students demonstrated exceptionally high rates of engagement and success in learning by doing. As a result of this success (often for the first time in their lives) students’ motivation and self-esteem soared. One of the adult students who made the most improvement during the course commented to me that she found working the problems on the computer to be very relaxing!” said Ms. Winkler.

11

believer in its ability to change students’ lives. Ten years ago at another university, she conducted the first pilot project in the nation to address the remediation needs of disadvantaged high school students who tested below a 9th grade level. Over a seven week period, for 30 minutes a day and a total of ten hours of instruction, students improved on average by 66%! What amazed her as much as the improvement in math skills was the total transformation of their demeanor, self-esteem and behavior! Her favorite story involved a student named Amos who hated math, was frustrated with school and wanted to drop out. By the end of the seven weeks, he showed a 90 percent improvement! Feeling confident in his studies for the first time in his life, he asked Ms. Winkler for assistance in getting into college. Since that first project, thousands of students have made outstanding progress in learning math. Now that is a success story!

Math Success! Do you struggle with math concepts? Are you preparing to take the COMPASS, SAT, OR GED? Even students with “math phobia or math anxiety” find this new approach to learning math a rewarding experience! This course is totally self-paced and individualized. Since instruction is delivered in class on the computer with headphones, students enjoy the experience of never being embarrassed in class. The instructor is available to answer any questions or help with any problem just like a private tutor. As you move through the program, you will discover that your motivation to learn becomes exceptionally high because you are learning and understanding the conceptsgaining confidence every step of the way! Each student is continually assessed and taught the concepts they need to understand. You will not waste time working problems you already understand! Based upon years of research on how people learn, the adaptive and supportive features built into the computer curriculum ensure students are able to quickly experience high levels of success. Use the program during the class and for homework- and up to one year at home. 12 sessions. 113CACD113 Tue, Thu Jan 25 - Mar 3 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM $299 CE Main Campus with Daryl Stone 114CACD113 Tue, Thu Apr 5 - May 12 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM $299 CE Main Campus with Daryl Stone

Do you want to get more organized with your digital photo collection, or edit your digital images to make each one look its best? In just two Saturday sessions, this hands-on course covers the skills that are needed to become a better digital photographer. It begins with camera skills. The course explains the purpose of those unfamiliar controls found on digital cameras, and how they can be used to get better results. Students will learn how to avoid exposure mistakes, and how exposure controls can be used to create dramatic photographic effects. You'll also learn valuable shooting techniques: how to choose the right lighting, when and how to use flash, and easy techniques for better photo composition. The second skill is organization. Students will learn how to manage a growing collection of images on the computer, how to save steps when downloading images from the camera, and how to back up photo collections for safekeeping. You'll also learn software tools for "tagging" images so they are easy to find later and how to automate the process of emailing images. The third skill is image editing. The course will help you choose the right software for your needs. It demonstrates how to improve any image with a basic edit (brightness, contrast, color balance, retouching) by doing the right steps in the right order. It also covers the powerful RAW file format, and how RAW impacts the editing workflow process. Please bring your camera, the instruction manual, and all your questions. If you have a laptop with Adobe Photoshop Elements (version 4 or higher), bring it to class and practice the computer skills as they are demonstrated! 2 sessions.
