MYSTERIES ARE THERE TO BE SOLVED. AREN’T THEY?

Shadow Doctor: The Past Awaits Adrian Plass Jack has been working with the Shadow Doctor for a little while now. He thinks he might just be getting to grips with the Doc’s unusual approach to helping with people’s deep problems. Then, visiting the highly respected leader of a large Christian organisation, Jack sees his friend go on the attack. However, the encounter reveals secrets about the Doc’s past that are beyond anything Jack could have imagined. Perturbed, he makes a list of all his unanswered questions. Where does the Shadow Doctor’s unusual

name come from? Why is he so stubbornly reluctant to speak about faith in terms that normal churchgoers would understand? Most all, Jack is desperate to pin down just what the Shadow Doctor actually thinks and feels about God. And there is one more issue that Jack feels particularly keenly. How will Doc respond to hearing that, having met a young lady named Aelwen, Jack is deeply in love for the very first time?

Book extract: Locked In by Victoria Arlen My life has completely fallen apart, and I lie here trapped inside my own body. Fighting the good fight each day. Constantly fighting the pull to give up. Yet, in spite of the “hopeless” prognosis I often hear, I am able to find plenty of things to be grateful for. Starting with the simple fact that my mind is now working enough that I can reflect. And the more I think, the more the list grows. I’m not dead . . . right ? That’s a BIG win!

SAVE £2

£7.99 Locked In Victoria Allen Paralympics champion and Dancing with the Stars contestant Victoria Arlen shares her courageous and miraculous story of recovery after falling into a mysterious vegetative state and how she broke free, overcoming the odds and never giving up hope, eventually living a full and inspiring life. RRP: £9.99 | 9781788930673

It might seem that starting with “I’m not dead” is really scraping the bottom of the barrel—and hey, that may be true! But it’s a start—a good start—and it was one for the top of the list. Then I begin to think how that simple hospital room has turned into a makeshift “home.” And when I’m stable, my parents create a hospital at our home. Whether in the hospital or at home, each place is bursting with love. I have this amazing, dedicated family around me day and night, and they are 100

percent committed to my every need. But reality frequently smacks me across the face, and it is sometimes really hard to be grateful. I’m a prisoner inside my own body. Everything is disconnected—my body doesn’t feel like it belongs to me. I try to wiggle a finger, nothing. I try to move my eyes to see out the window, nothing. All I can do is stare straight ahead. I have no control over my eyes, and my vision oftentimes is distorted. I try to open my mouth and scream, nothing. It feels as if I’m being constantly electrocuted. I will later learn that my nerves are misfiring due to my lack of movement, and that there is a war raging inside my nervous system, spinal cord, and brain. Breathe. Just breathe. Find your place, go to the lake. Forget, just forget, for one moment. Breathe, I know it hurts, but breathe. But when seizures strike, I can’t breathe, my body convulses, machines beep, and I feel as if I’m being struck by lightning. I want to pass out and escape this torture, but I can’t do anything except bear the pain. As the seizure subsides, my heart races and my head spins. My body relentlessly fights against me. It is a vicious, violent, and horrific cycle. I’m continually pulled underwater, never reaching the surface. How can I live like this? How can I break out of this prison? I need a miracle. Please, God. I need a miracle.

No Neutral Ground Pete Portal

Children of the Himalayas Diane Bell

An Open Door Maud Kells

The extraordinary story of one man’s journey to bring faith and hope to the places where it is needed most - among gangsters and drug addicts.

On 12th December 1999, middleaged social worker Diane Bell was stunned by a dream from God that would transform countless lives.

“I was aware of a slight unease. In all my years at the hospital, I had never had a hoax call. Suddenly out of the darkness ran two masked figures in camouflage clothing pointing something shaped like a gun, covered in leaves. ‘You won’t scare me. You won’t get the better of me.’ flashed through my mind as I reached out to grab the weapon …”

No Neutral Ground is the gripping account of Pete Portal’s move from London to Manenberg, of addicts and gangsters meeting Jesus and being transformed, and how he went from living with a heroin addict to helping establish a church community - and all the heartbreak and failure along the way. This is a story of mighty works of God, as well as relapse, hopelessness and despair; the miraculous and the mundane, heaven and hell, all balanced on a knife edge. Offering searing insight and an inspiring vision of faith, Pete asks why anyone would choose this way of life, if giving up our lives for others is worth it - and what the church could become if we were willing to risk it all to reach the forgotten and the lost. RRP: £13.99 | 9781473697379

Called to offer family-based care to street kids in Nepal, cancer, devastating earthquakes and lurid child trafficking allegations were among challenges to be overcome in making this life-giving vision a reality. Partnering with associates locally and abroad, Diane cofounded WIN Nepal to rescue these vulnerable children afflicted by domestic violence, crushing poverty, alcoholism and sexual exploitation. Facing such immense needs, she would need every ounce of her professional experience to help others restore their futures and break painful cycles of abuse. Children of the Himalayas tells an incredible story of God’s faithfulness and provision to Diane and WIN Nepal, and inspires with where God could take you. Join them in discovering His heart for the most vulnerable in our world.

When twenty-five-year-old Maud Kells gave up her home in Ireland to replace martyred missionaries in Congo she was acutely aware of the risk she was taking. Despite the state of the war-torn country, her own reserved nature and the objections of her family, she chose to follow the God who promised ‘I am with you. That is all you need.’ This is the remarkable story of an ordinary woman who decided to walk through the door God opened for her, whatever the cost.

Plugged In Dan Strange

Am I Just My Brain? Sharon Dirckx

Home for Good (updated edition) Krish Kandiah

Be equipped to engage with culture and use it for God.

Modern research is uncovering more and more detail of what our brain is and how it works. We are living, thinking creatures who carry around with us an amazing organic supercomputer in our heads.

Tying in to a nationwide joint campaign by the Evangelical Alliance and Care for the Family, Krish Kandiah wants us all to take seriously Jesus’s call to ‘suffer the little children’ by engaging with the needs of the many thousands of children up and down the country who are in care and whom the church could and should be helping.

Whether it’s TV boxsets, Instagram stories or historical novels, we all consume culture. So it’s important that we are neither bewitched by it—buying into everything it tells us—or bewildered by it—lashing out in judgement or retreating into a Christian bubble. Dan Strange encourages Christians to engage with everything they watch, read and play in a positive and discerning way. He also teaches Christians how to think and speak about culture in a way that plugs in to a bigger and better reality—the story of King Jesus, and his cosmic plan for the world. It’s possible to watch TV and read novels and play video games in a way that actually feeds our faith, rather than withers it. It’s even possible for you—yes, you—to be that person who starts off talking to a mate about last night’s football and ends up talking about Jesus. RRP: £7.99 | 9781909919419 6

But what is the relationship between our brains and our minds—and ultimately our sense of identity as a person? Are we more than machines? Is free-will an illusion? Do we have a soul? Brain Imaging Scientist Sharon Dirckx lays out the current understanding of who we are from biologists, philosophers, theologians and psychologists, and points towards a bigger picture, that suggests answers to the fundamental questions of our existence. Not just “What am I?”, but “Who am I?”—and “Why am I?” Read this book to gain valuable insight into what modern research is telling us about ourselves, or to give a sceptical friend to challenge the idea that we are merely material beings living in a material world. RRP: £7.99 | 9781784982751

Krish and his wife Miriam have adopted and fostered children themselves and their experience and that of the many others in this book - is very different from the popular myth which suggests social services seek to prevent Christians from getting involved. Krish argues that whatever the state’s stance may be, it is a part of our calling as God’s church to get involved where it’s hardest, and to help these children out of the tough realities they find themselves in. This book makes a compelling case that the church can and must make a difference in these children’s lives, and asks us all to consider our response. RRP: £13.99 | 9781529355291

7 Myths about Singleness 7 Myths About Singleness Sam Allberry If marriage shows us the shape of the gospel, singleness shows us its sufficiency. Much of what we commonly assume about singleness—that it is primarily about the absence of good things like intimacy, family, or meaningful ministry—is either flat-out untrue or, at the very least, shouldn’t be true. To be single, we often think, is to be alone and spiritually hindered.

SAVE £3.51

£7.99

But the Bible paints a very different picture of singleness: it is a positive gift and blessing from God. RRP: £11.50 | 9781433561528

‘I used to be a lesbian.’ Jackie grew up fatherless and experienced gender confusion. She abused marijuana, loved pornography, and embraced both masculinity and homosexuality with every fibre of her being. She knew that Christians had a lot to say about all of the above. But was she supposed to change herself? At age 19, Jackie came face-to-face with what it meant to be made new. And not in a church, or through contact with Christians—God broke in and turned her heart towards Him right in her own bedroom in light of His gospel. Read in order to understand. Read in order to hope. Or read in order, like Jackie, to be made new.
