Who is Sara Hingle and how was your business 'These Walls' created? I am originally from Perth and studied a Bachelor of Arts (Design) at Curtin University. While working as a graphic designer I also dabbled in illustration and this ended up leading me to the east coast. I then worked as an editorial illustrator for several years and found myself being commissioned on briefs to design and create art for patterns. My love for the ‘world of pattern’ developed during this time. I had wanted to create my own line of paper and textiles for quite some time and when I found myself at the end of one particular contract, and with my youngest son off to kindy in 2014, the stars aligned and 'These Walls' was created.
What we love about your work is that it is beautifully personalised, can you explain the design process to us? My inspiration for my designs are sparked from any number of places and experiences. I try to keep my eyes open at all times, taking note of patterns and colour palettes in architecture, nature, Instagram, wherever. Once I am ready to start a new collection, I create a mood board from all of my collected inspiration and from there I begin to create artwork by painting and drawing the basis for the patterns. Once I feel I have enough for a pattern, I scan and begin to tweak and refine the pattern in Photoshop and also use this rather handy program for creating the colourways. I like, for any design within the one collection, to be able to sit comfortably alongside another - creating a cohesive and complimentary story and palette.
With a business name like 'These Walls', we have to ask... If your walls could talk, what would they say? My walls would speak of a home that is a combination of busy and relaxed and messy but well contemplated! As a young family who have just renovated, our walls could tell some entertaining tales and we look forward to the many more stories to come.

Where are your products produced & printed?
