the dream team. Meet Alex and Sally Thompson, the talented mother and daughter team behind The Bedhead Co. A bespoke bedhead business filling the gap in the upholstery market, The Bedhead Co. gives customers the unique opportunity to design their own bedheads online, at the click of a button.


Tell us about your business and how it began. We have always had a love of interiors and beautiful fabrics but the idea developed when I was looking for a custom made upholstered bedhead for my bedroom. I wanted the freedom to design it myself, but as a young professional I couldn’t afford to engage an interior designer. After going through the process of creating my bedhead, we found that a lot of people we knew wanted that final decorative element for their rooms at an affordable price point but didn't know where to start. After identifying this gap in the market, we began manufacturing bedheads for our friends and family. We enjoyed the creative process and wanted to channel that into a business that we could run together. You have discussed finding a gap in the upholstery market. What is your business point of difference that closes this gap? The Bedhead Co. offers affordable bedheads at the click of a button. The fact we are a mother-daughter-duo is also a point of difference, it’s nice running a family business. My legal background has assisted in creating and developing the business itself. Although the creative design side is a completely different set of skills from my primary job, I do find this and the design process the most rewarding part of The Bedhead Co. It is refreshing to be able to transition from corporate to creative. From a design perspective, mum (Sally) has the benefit of few more years lived and a real talent with interiors and design. Mum hails from country Queensland and has a background in journalism and art history. She is fortunate to have worked with some leading interior designers on various projects. What products do The Bedhead Co. offer? The Bedhead Co. offers a range of bespoke bedheads, with pre-designed and customised options available. If you are looking for something specific, our custom range allows our customers to create their perfect bedhead from a range of sizes, patterns and designs (customers can even provide their own fabric). Additionally our Bambino Bedheads range for kids allows parents and children to design their own bedheads together. What is the inspiration behind your bedhead and textile designs?

There is great appeal in being able to design your own upholstery. The Bedhead Co. have made curating your own bedhead simple, with their online three step process. 1. Select one of The Bedhead Co.’s beautiful handpicked fabrics. 2. Choose a carefully curated upholstered bedhead style. 3. Leave it to The Bedhead Co. team to create the bedhead of your dreams – simple!

We love bright, bold patterns, with simple piping or studding to finish the look. Travel has been a family focus of ours both domestically and abroad. The Baja Russett is inspired by our family holidays to the snow fields of Colorado, the Henley from Alex's trip through Henley to the Cotswolds last year and the Como is inspired by our holidays in much loved Noosa, Queensland. We also love the warmth of country style and draw inspiration from our family's country heritage. We try to capture the feeling of those places in our designs, as they are homely to us and we believe that they create an inviting and relaxing space for our clients. Our main style inspiration comes from the gorgeous and elaborate bedheads and rooms by interior designer Kit Kemp for the Firmdale Hotel group. What does The Bedhead Co. have in store for 2017, any upcoming projects we should keep a look out for? At the moment we are focusing on building our client base and getting to know our customers and what they want. We are also looking ahead to our next collection.
