With the arrival of their spectacular new office space just prior to Christmas, Place Sunnybank are set to take buyers and sellers to a whole new level. It's also evidence of husband and wife, Owen Chen and Ping Han, fulfilling their business ethos of “planning big” while “focusing small” on their community. Ping tells us how she and her husband, independently awarded Queensland’s number one suburban A-List agent of the year in 2015, plan to lead the Sunnybank market and grow their Place brand.

What will your office space allow you to achieve in 2017? Apart from the gorgeous surroundings that make our clients so relaxed and comfortable, we can do the things we’ve always wanted to do including client seminars and investor information evenings. We can cater in the fully-functional showcase kitchen, which is such a bonus and a great way of extending hospitality to our guests. It’s a point of difference from our competitors that we plan to make full use of.

Place Sunnybank was a couple of years in the making. Tell us about that. Owen was extremely successful in his previous network even up to an international level but had always admired the way Place markets itself and its properties. That really appealed to him. We both knew that opening a Place business would be a family operation and would require a long-term commitment.

We just had to wait for my babies to get a little older before we both could make that commitment! So, Place Sunnybank has been about two years coming.

Both you and Owen have a range of degrees in various industries. What made you decide to turn to real estate instead as a career? Owen’s passion, despite a degree in commerce and economics, has always been real estate. He studied because his father insisted on it, which is a very Chinese thing. My background was in mechanical engineering in China and then in accounting, finance and fund management. However, once Owen began working in real estate I’d spend Saturdays with him at open houses and would pencil at auctions. I’d reached the top of my tree in my finance job, so it was a natural progression to join him in the business.

What do you see as your role in the local community? We are definitely a bridge in our community. Most of our sellers are long-term Sunnybank residents who’ve been here forever and are emotional about leaving. They’re retiring or downsizing: older people moving on. 90% of our buyers are Chinese – residents, not overseas investors - who come to the area because of the community and services that exist here. We think it’s very important to make the transition as easy and as stressfree for our sellers and buyers as possible.

What do you see as the future for Place Sunnybank? We’ve leased the adjoining office space and are currently sub-letting it. In the future, as our business grows, we will have the capacity of up to 610m2. If we focus small, we can plan big like this. We have a huge catchment in our surrounding areas and, with a high-profile Kessels Road office, can also expect to attract business from other areas including Upper Mt Gravatt and Wishart. If we continue to be a bridge in the community and focus on the best possible delivery of our services, we can expect to be using that big office space in the foreseeable future!
