LIVING SOUND Melding industrial urban design with recycled electronics and military surplus, as well as creating job opportunities for the underemployed, AMPLFY is a company with its eye on the future. Business founder and owner Brad Clair tells Places how AMPLFY’s portable speakers have taken off in a direction where style meets sustainability.


Your inspiration for AMPLFY came while working with marginalised people in Cambodia. Tell us about that. It was really experiencing an initiative that was so resourceful and successful in Cambodia that inspired me. Land mine victims from the Khmer Rouge era are being provided with low-cost prosthetics produced by 3D printers. Most cannot afford conventional prosthetics, so this is a tremendously creative and practical solution. It inspired me to think of an enterprise where my interest in electronics and speakers could intersect with a social and environmental purpose. How do AMPLFY speakers fit into design and lifestyle trends?

Tell us about the business philosophy of AMPLFY. Drawing on my interest in electronics and being mindful of the industrial waste produced in the technological industry, I recongised that recycling electronics unquestionably benefits the environment. We’re working with materials that cannot be broken down efficiently or at all over time, which is why we wanted to combine the need for recycling and repurposing those materials. We ultimately wanted speakers that are stylish and adaptable to the markets aesthetics with no compromise on sound, because music is such an important part of our lifestyle in creating the right atmosphere. But further to all of that, I wanted to create work for people who need it. You’ve linked in with an electronics recycling business called Substation 33. What’s the connection there? Substation 33 employs people who, for reasons many and varied, find it difficult to gain or keep employment. These are usually very marginalised people who genuinely need some help. So the company fulfills social and environmental criteria that are an ideal fit with AMPLFY as an enterprise.

I think the speakers have a timeless appeal, because they can be modified to suit any aesthetic environment. Customers can paint them if and as they choose to complement an interior colour palette, but they do look great just as they are. There’s no question that our speakers have a vintage industrial edge, as the speaker boxes are former ammunition cases that are military surplus. The batteries are actually more powerful than in mass-produced speakers so they can produce a lot of sound if necessary, which can be great for a entertaining. And there is a special appeal to DIY electronics pundits? We can supply our speakers ready-made by the good people of Substation 33, or as a kit for those who like to tinker with electronics. When a customer buys a kit, they are given access to assembly instructions on our website. The kits are really popular, and we’ve had feedback (no pun intended) that some customers have bought them as gifts for their partners. They are really original gifts! How have the electronics and lifestyle/design market places responded to AMPLFY? With design houses and boutiques now on board, the response has been highly encouraging. We’ve produced speakers that are technically very competitive, while also allowing customers to get behind our business ethos. They appreciate conscientious consumerism and being mindful of their social and environmental footprint, while also loving the look of our speakers. It’s rewarding to create products that serve a lifestyle and design purpose, while also ticking boxes of a higher purpose.
