INSPIRATION CASE 20: FLEXIBLE COMMUNITY ART SPACE General Information Talking about an urban space we usually imagine something steady and static. On the other side we refer to the term ‘flexibility’ to something which is easily changeable. So how can we talk about a flexible urban community space? Our inspiring example Free Zone is a place where people experiment with their imagination. And as imagination is limitless the space should be able to stretch its boundaries to meet the challenge.

Frizone (Free Zone) is a 3,000 m2 large urban spaces that includes the permanent installation “under the canopy” where 3,500 ropes in various lengths hang from the ceiling. In Copenhagen’s Frizone young entrepreneurs and artists can create common cultural experiences for the benefit of all locals. It is a busy Free Zone, where creativity can flourish without almost any restrictions. There is room for quirky ideas, diversity and entrepreneurship in high and extreme potency. It builds bridges between cultures and there is freedom to think differently and space to turn dreams into reality.

How does Frizone in Copenhagen work in detail? Frizone is located on the former Carlsberg brewery site right in the heart of Copenhagen, which has been developed by the Carlsberg foundation and the City of Copenhagen towards a melting pot of Denmark’s creative industries. In this flexible urban community space people can experiment and draw experience from their own experiments with music, theater, performance art, dance, role playing, lectures, films, etc. This space is intended to be one where new cultural values develop and pass to the city’s decision makers, and it is where local community members can challenge existing systems, think creatively and pushing the boundaries of what user-driven innovation can create trough events and activities. Anyone can book the space via Frizone’s web site, borrow the necessary equipment on the spot and start experimenting.

What does this mean for the local community? ‘Behind this door anything can happen‘ Frizone is designed as an open flexible urban space where one can book, go and play with different ideas without any hassle. Community members can simply spend their time in experimenting and testing artistic ideas. In a long period this will result in a community with creative and innovative thinking, a community which is capable to solve its own problems and to develop on its own.
