Safety is key at this time of the year and we are asking everybody involved in farming to look out for each other, particularly young and old around machinery and livestock. Carry out routine machine checks to ensure axle limits, the PTO cover, brakes, safety belt, etc are all in perfectly good working order. There is little or no point in carrying out checks after an incident has occurred. Be vigilant and stay safe. Our travels this issue has had us up North for the fantastic 174th Balmoral Show, which had over 100,000 people attend. It was great to meet so many of our readers from Ulster and as always we enjoyed the banter and hope you were happy with your goodie bag. assey Ferguson has unveiled a special edition of its best-selling MF 5600 series tractor based on the MF 5610 that accomplished the record-breaking Antarctica 2 mission to the South Pole in December 2014. The three-cylinder, 105hp tractor is equipped with a package of unique features and exclusive design attributes that reflect the many challenges of the 5,000km trek across the ice. The package on this tractor includes, superdeluxe air-suspended seat, mechanical cab suspension, Six LED lights, 540/540E/1,000rpm PTO, Massey Ferguson’s high-spec off-road audio entertainment system, Rear wiper, AutoDrive Dyna4 transmission, fenders as standard, special black paint on engine grilles and decals of the Antarctica 2 expedition partners. Each tractor will have its own special Antarctica 2 identification plate inside the cab, stamped with its special edition number. In all other ways, the tractor will be equivalent to a regular MF 5610 and built on the same production line in Beauvais, France.
The FTMTA Urges Farmers To Be Vigilant When It Comes To Farm Machinery Safety
I
t is that time of the year when silage making returns to the fore and there has already been a limited amount of activity around the country. As the season gathers momentum, it is to be hoped that this year will not add any further to the already extremely poor safety record of the agricultural workplace, which is the most dangerous working environment by far in the country. Last year was unfortunately an exceptionally bad year in this regard with thirty farm accident deaths which was the highest such figure in over twenty years and, sadly, there have already been a number of fatalities during 2015. FTMTA reiterates the calls made by it over the years for those involved in working with agricultural machinery to be conscious of, and proactive in relation to, the safety of themselves and others. The Association calls on those active in agriculture and using agricultural machinery to be mindful of their safety and that of other people.
Some small and practical steps can easily be taken to make the everyday use of farm machinery safer. Amongst other points: • Clearly understand what all controls do and how to use them before you operate a tractor or any machine • Make sure that the handbrake is working before you start any self propelled machine
Farmers Expecting Minister Coveney To Deliver On Farmers Charter
T
he IFA Deputy President Tim O Leary said farmers are expecting the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney to honour his commitment on finalising a new Charter of Rights for farmers. He said farmers were promised a new Charter to coincide with the implementation of the new CAP, which commenced on Jan 1st 2015. “Farmers are extremely frustrated with the lack of progress from

Minister Coveney in finalising a new Charter of Farmers’ Rights. It’s time the Minister delivered fair play for all farm families, as he promised in recent weeks during the by-election campaign in Carlow-Kilkenny.” Tim O’Leary said the failure of the Minister to act has allowed the negotiations on the new Charter to get bogged down on inspections, with no movement by the Department. He said, “Minister Coveney has to intervene in this logjam, resolve the
key outstanding issues, and insist that a new, improved Charter is implemented without further delay”. IFA is demanding that the new Charter incorporates fair notice of inspection, the elimination of duplication, a reduction in overall inspections as well as increased tolerances and a new yellow card system for unintentional non-compliances. The IFA Deputy President said farmers had become increasingly frustrated at the burden of bureaucracy, unannounced inspections, land eligibility and other penalties being imposed by an inflexible and unfair EU regime. Tim O Leary said that the IFA had engaged constructively with the Department of Agriculture for over a year on a new Charter to address farmer concerns. Progress has been made on many issues, including improved payment deadlines. However he said farmer patience with the process had run out over the failure of the Minister to take a hands-on approach to resolve the inspection issues.

New Telehandler Tyres For Farmers From Michelin

ichelin has extended its range of BibLoad Hard Surface tyres, unveiled last year, with the introduction of the 500/70 R24 - a new size popular on telehandlers. Designed for working on dry, wet or greasy hard surfaces, the new tyre features diamond-shaped tread blocks with seven sides and 12 distinct bevelled edges. Coupled with an enhanced sidewall protection and a wheel rim stone guard preventing damage to the edges of the rims when working on difficult terrain, the new telehandler tyre has been developed to provide better traction, stability, comfort, damage resistance and a longer service life than the XMCL model it replaces. Michelin says the diamond-shaped tread blocks ensure that whatever the direction of the machine, the tread block is always in the right position for working efficiently. Alongside it, the new lug tread pattern makes it possible to quickly evacuate any debris that may have got caught in the tread grooves, whilst also providing greater transverse adherence on slippery ground. The new tread and shoulder blocks improve resistance to wear-and-tear by providing increased rigidity to the tread in the event of lateral forces being applied, while tyre life is extended by increasing the surface area of the tyre in contact with the ground from 29 to 44 per cent, the company claims. Michelin is also extending its BibLoad Hard Surface tyres to include the 400/70 R20, ideally suited to compact loaders and backhoe loaders.

he new system is specifically designed for use with all makes and models of balers for both hay and straw. The potential to increase baler output and forage quality benefits that the Harvest Tec application and preservative system offers, has been recognised by a number of leading baler manufacturers that have adopted their own branding to show the importance they place in these products. Agco (HayBoss), Kuhn (Balers Choice), Case IH (Thirty Plus) and New Holland (Crop Saver) all offer the system as an option for their baler ranges and will have demonstration units fitted to balers on their stands and working plots. The Harvest Tec 600 Series variable-rate applicator is the most advanced moisture recognition and modular system on the market, and allows the customer to tailor the Harvest Tec equipment that’s best suited to their operation. It provides operators with greater flexibility and ease of use. The 600 Series is integrated with Agco 21/2200 series balers, Case IH LB and New Holland Big Baler and Isobus-compatible tractors, ensuring that essential application data is displayed alongside the baler information on the Isobus display in the tractor. For non-integrated balers or tractors with dual or spare Isobus connectors, there is an optional interface that enables information to be displayed on a split screen or on a separate screen,
including the Harvest Tec Touch Screen display. This can also be used to control applicators on tractors and balers without Isobus. The ability to accurately and automatically apply buffered Baler’s Choice preservative to hay and straw crops in less than ideal conditions, or in order to maximise crop yield and feed value, enables baler operators achieve high bale quality at moisture contents of up to 30 per cent, without dust and mould developing. In good conditions, being able to bale at more than the safe 15 per cent moisture content, baling can start earlier in the day and finish later into the evening, resulting in up to 30 per cent higher daily outputs and increased profitability. The Harvest Tec 600 Series system is designed specifically for use with all balers from small square, round and the highest capacity big square balers. In addition to providing accurate moisture content readings and automatic variable rate application of Baler’s Choice buffered preservative, the 600 Series can offer the operator the option to provide full bale traceability from the field to end-user, yield mapping and visual identification of high moisture content bales. Two versions of the Harvest Tec 600 Series system are available: Moisture Monitor and Moisture Pro. The 600 Series Moisture Monitor option is designed for operator’s who just want an accurate moisture moni-
tor and are unlikely to want to add any other function modules. Using star wheels located in the bale chamber that take nine readings every second, this provides an accurate record of the moisture content over a range from eight per cent to 72 per cent, accurate to one percentage point. This information is displayed on a compatible baler or tractor terminal or the Harvest Tec display. If it’s then decided that additional modules are required, these can be added, but only after a companion kit has been installed to upgrade the system to Moisture Pro. This provides the same moisture monitoring functionality, but with additional features and functionality. For round and small square conventional balers, two systems are available: the 600 Series and 400 Series. Like the systems for big square balers, the 600 Series for round and small square balers is Isobus compatible and uses highly accurate moisture sensors within the chamber to monitor crop moisture and use this information to automatically alter the application. The 400 Series uses similar technology, but is not Isobus compatible and is designed as an entry-level system for lower output round and small square balers. For the operator only producing a wrapped product the company also supplies a simple electric pumping system for fixed-rate silage inoculant application.

€10 million Competitive Fund To Support Start Ups
T
he Government will today launch a new €10million initiative to support more startup businesses countrywide. As part of the Government’s Regional Action plan for Jobs, the 31 Local Enterprise Offices and other public, private and community organisations that support the job-creation are being invited to bid for funding to create new collaborative projects. The initiative comprises two strands, which are now live, with closing date of 10th July 2015. €5million LEO fund, covering the period 2015-2017, open to groups of Local Enterprise Offices who come together to bid for funding for projects to support job-creation initiatives in their areas. Similarly, a € 5million Community Enterprise Initiatives fund, open to groups and organisations in every county of the country who come together with ideas for projects to create jobs. Both funds will be awarded on a competitive basis to the projects with the greatest capacity to create jobs.
Ireland To Get First Energy Storage Plant
I
rish firm Schwungrad Energie has announced that the first Hybrid flywheel energy storage plant is to be developed in Ireland. It is being developed in collaboration with the Department of Physics & Energy at University of Limerick and will be based in Rhode, County Offaly. It has received the support of Beacon Power, LLC, a US-based company. Approximately 30 to 40 jobs will be created during the construction phase, which is now underway. A further 10 to 15 sustainable jobs will follow. Flywheel technology produces and stores small but highly flexible amounts of power to suit grid requirements. Schwungrad received the first phase of up to €2.55m European Commission Horizon 2020 funding to assist the project in December 2014, aimed at developing a hybrid system security and reliability technology, to overcome technical barriers and enable the establishment of low carbon and efficient energy systems. Additional investment has been received from Offaly-based company, RR Projects and the European Commission, to facilitate development of Europe’s first Hybrid flywheel system service facility. Over €7m Announced To Help Resolve Inadequacies In Wastewater Treatment Infrastructure

rish Water is to invest over €7m to help resolve inadequacies in the wastewater treatment infrastructure in Clifden, County Galway. The firm confirmed €7.75m has been secured for the project. The Clifden sewerage network has already been upgraded and the construction of a new Wastewater Treatment Plant for the town is due for completion in October 2015. The EPA Urban Wastewater Report 2014 identified 44 large urban areas that did not achieve the mandatory EU water quality effluent standards and Clifden was one of the locations. Clifden Beach has also been rated as ‘poor’ in the recent EPA Bathing Water Quality Report, a report that describes many issues that contaminate beach areas, including sewage discharge, agricultural runoff and other contaminated runoff in coastal areas.

McHale Plants Sales Take To The Road For Komatsu Demonstrations

omatsu distributor McHale Plant Sales of Birdhill is taking to the road with a series of demonstration programmes in which their popular WA320 and WA470 wheel loaders and their mid-range and heavy-duty PC138 and PC210 crawler excavators will feature prominently. Part of what their sales director John O’Brien says is a programme that will see Komatsu ‘get down and dirty on site with customers where they can better evaluate the qualities of each machine’, the demonstrations will take place throughout Summer as part of what he termed ‘an elevated drive to mark our 21 years as Komatsu distributors in Ireland.’

The ties between Chamberlain and John Deere run deep. Justin Roberts investigates.
D
id John Deere save the Australian tractor industry? In the final analysis the answer must be no, but they did grant it a reprieve for a while until the Chamberlain tractor production line at Welshpool was eventually closed. The factory itself remains open and now produces farm implements and lawn care equipment but at one time it produced enough tractors to satisfy 21% of the Australian market and a large part of that success was due to the 80 series, a range that was introduced in 1975 and discontinued in 1983. To say that Alan Hawker Chamberlain had been just a farm mechanic prior to the war and that he decided to build his own tractor afterwards with a bit of help from the government is great simplification of the situation, but it is usually the story that we hear. The truth is a lot more involved and includes the fact that Bob (as he was known) Chamberlain was part of a well respected engineering family that had been producing components for the automotive industry since 1927. At the age of 19 he joined the family company as an engineering trainee and after a while began to work on the prospect of producing a tractor suitable for Australian broadacre farming. To help get an idea of what was required he spent considerable time out in the field servicing tractors from other manufacturers and concluded that, above all else, famers desired reliable engines with long service intervals and a much wider range of gears to boost productivity. In the late thirties he drew up plans for such a machine and a couple of prototypes were built but with the war intervening the project proceeded no further. However, the war did provide a positive career boost for he travelled to the US to help design the M5 light tank, an experience that exposed him to the top US automotive designers and production techniques. Returning in 1943 he once more
set about devising a tractor suitable for Australian farmers and so it was that the 40K was created in a factory that had been primarily built for making munitions by the Western Australia government. The transfer of production from the company’s original home in eastern Australia to the west coast was not without its problems, but the factory geared up to produce 60 machines a week which were readily sold until the P6 diesel powered Fordson Major arrived on Australian shores, and suddenly the 40K started piling up in the factory yard. Bob Chamberlain’s answer was twofold, produce a high powered diesel tractor and start making implements to go with it. The resulting 70hp GM powered machine and its later stable mates enjoyed good sales over the next few years and after much political wrangling and a failed approach from Massey Ferguson the company finally went public in 1963. Come 1970 John Deere was in an expansive mood and obviously considered Chamberlain a good way of getting established in the Australian Market, it therefore purchased 49% of the company’s stock and set about rationalising the company in its own image. One of the fruits of the takeover was the 4080, seen here at Malvern. This model was the first of the range and went on to be its best selling. Powered by a French built six cylinder Deere engine it provided 85 hp through its locally designed and built transmission. The rest of the tractor was all Australian although John Deere was using the established dealer network to sell its own tractors in the familiar green livery alongside the Chamberlains at the same time. Deere purchased the company outright in the eighties but due to a severe downturn in sales during the same period it discontinued the manufacture of tractors in Australia in 1986. They are gone but not forgotten.

In this issue we visited Ger Doyle from Goresbridge in Co Kilkenny to view his unique collection of scale models.
G
er works on a large mixed diary and beef farm in Paulstown, which is intensively stocked with both animals and machinery. With all calves reared on the farm to finishing, the demand for high quality feed is high. With this in mind Maize, Beet and grass silage are grown on the farm. The working fleet includes a HN 7030, NH 8560, Ford 7810, Fendt 311 LS and a JD 6620 plus the yard working JCB 413, MF 50EX and MF 240. The JBC 413 is new and is used to put up the silage, which is harvested using their own machine. Ger is not afraid of hard work and with such interest in his job its no wonder it spills into his hobby of collecting scale model tractors. Gers interest began with the high detail and robust Bruder range of tractors before the emergence of the companies now producing other high detail models with which we have become familiar such as Universal Hobbies, Siku, Britains, Replicagri, Ros and Weise toys. Ger concentrates on the Ford, New Holland, Fiat group and on Fendt tractors. This issue we will look at the blue group, with a total of 160 tractors at the moment. This range of tractors from the Ford 5000 to the New Holland T 8,390 and from the Fiat 880 to the M 160 show the history and development of the CNH business when laid out in an exhibit. One of the nicest parts of a hobby whether its gardening or collecting is the interesting people you meet, complementing your work and dedication, your attention to detail and encouraging you to build your hobby and enjoy it with your family. Gers hobby is shared with his youngest sons Jack and Eoin and supported by his wife Geraldine. Ger attends many model and toy shows with his models and of course to look out for the next new tractor. Models in the collection range include old Britains tractors and implements, standard of the shelf models and customised tractors where a standard model tractor is repainted and detailed to replicate a limited edition tractor originally produced by the company. BOBCAT 3600 & 3650 UTILITY VEHICLES The Bobcat Company has expanded its utility vehicle lineup for 2015 with the introduction of the new 3600 and 3650 hydrostatic-drive models.
T
he utility vehicles feature a new 24-horsepower Kohler diesel engine the same engine used to power the 3400 and 3400XL models. The 3600 and 3650 offer industry-leading payload and towing capacity, exceptional durability and optimal comfort year-round. Additionally, the 3650 takes utility vehicle versatility to a new level with the ability to operate front-mounted powertake-off (PTO) and non-PTO attachments. The 3600 and 3650 utility vehicles can handle and carry more materials for grounds maintenance professionals, agriculture producers or homeowners with acreage. Hydrostatic drive is ideal for tasks that require repetitive back and forth movements, such as hauling, mowing, sweeping and snow removal. Operators can drive forward or reverse by pressing their toe or heel to the travel pedal. The vehicles can drive forward to a maximum top speed of 30 mph. A hydrostatic transmission system offers operators the best of both worlds by combining smooth drivability with a durable suspension. The operator can choose the setting that matches the load requirements to achieve optimum comfort and traction without sacrificing durability. Another characteristic of the hydrostatic system is dynamic braking. When the
driver lifts the accelerator pedal, a valve in the drive motor closes blocking the flow of oil and slowing the machine down. This dynamic braking feature makes the utility vehicles easier to control when under load. To achieve industry-leading payload capacity for towing and carrying, the 3600 and 3650 utility vehicles feature independent front dual A-arm suspension with rear de Dion suspension. This feature improves the vehicle’s ride comfort and provides improved stability to haul and tow heavy loads. Operators can choose between low or high-range speeds for towing heavy loads or moving light loads at faster speeds. Transporting passengers in comfort is a key feature of the 3600 and 3650 utility vehicles. Tilt steering, ample legroom and foot space along with a three-passenger bench front seat come standard on the 3600. The 3650 comes standard with bucket seats and integrated controls for the unique Multi-Attachment X-Change (M.A.X.) system. The M.A.X. system, which provides integration and versatility not found on ordinary utility vehicles. The 3650 has the capability of powering front-mounted PTO-driven attachments, including an angle broom, mower and snowblower, as well as non-PTO attachments such as a bucket, grapple, pallet fork and snow blade. Seven attach-
ments, combined with a maximum lift height of 2 feet and rated lift capacity of 500 pounds, allow the 3650 to excel at tasks such as personal property maintenance, and moving feed and fertiliser. For even more productivity, a 60-gallon sprayer accessory can be mounted in the utility vehicle cargo box. The cargo box’s composite material makes it more durable than metallic boxes in order to handle tough loads, retain strength and look good for years. For better attachment control, operators can utilise the throttle independent of the travel control pedal. This feature allows operators to set the engine speed with a throttle rather than having to use the accelerator pedal to increase engine rpm. Separating the two functions gives operators the freedom to run powered attachments more efficiently with the rpm they require yet at low travel speeds. Hydrostatic-drive utility vehicles use a single two-speed motor with fewer parts, reducing maintenance costs for owners. A feature called automatic engine shutdown is standard for both models. The engine in the new utility vehicles will automatically shut itself down if it experiences high engine coolant temperature or high hydraulic oil temperature. These are state of the art machines ready to serve you.

We drive a VW Caddy with a difference and find it could be the alternative choice!
W
hat is it about vans? Or should I say, van-derived vehicles. I picked the up the new VW Cross Caddy and within minutes I had a smile on face driving along the M50. For some reason they seem to bring out the child in me and I was already more entertained than the previous 7 days driving a €40,000 saloon. The ironic thing is the new Cross Caddy is not all that van like inside and features the creature comforts you would normally associate with luxury saloon or MPV. Sat Nav, heated seats, cruise control and a leather multi function steering wheel are just some of the delights you get and its nice and silent on the road also. Powered by VW’s renowned 1.6TDI 102hp engine it is quiet and more than quick enough to get you in trouble. During my time with the Cross Caddy I traveled some 800 kilometers including a trip to the Balmoral Agricultural show just outside Belfast.

VW claim the Cross Caddy will return 5.8-litres per 100 kilometers and even with some spirited driving it returned just shy of that figure. So what’s so unique about the Cross Caddy and how does it differ from the Caddy Life we tested last year? Well first off you get the cool off road looks with the Cross body styling pack. This gives you revised bumpers and skirts with decent ground clearance. Although our test vehicle was not all wheel drive you can order a 4 Motion version but its probably better suited to the 2.0TDI power-plant. The wheels are 17-inch Canyon alloys that look superb against the metallic paintwork and the tinted passenger windows give you a touch of privacy when in the rear. Inside you get ample space as you would expect from a vehicle of this size and a 7 seat option is available for an additional €810 over the basic price of the vehicle which is €36,745. Annual road tax is at the rate of €280 and you get a massive boot that grows
further by simply folding the rear seats forward or removing them altogether. Access is superb thanks to the sliding side doors. I really enjoyed my 7 days with the Cross Caddy. It drives well and has plenty of aids such as Park Assist, Auto dimming rear mirror, and the all-important Electronic Stability Programme to ensure confidence. Some might say it’s a little bit pricey against similar sized SUV’s but few will offer the practicality the Caddy can. If you want to work your vehicle day in and day out, use it as a family wagon on weekends with the dog and bikes loaded up, I think the Caddy becomes the perfect all-rounder. If you are keen to stand out from the norm then this could be the vehicle for you. The Cross Caddy can be viewed at commercial dealerships nationwide and we would urge you to take a test drive. Who knows you might even get that uncontrollable grin appearing on your face!

that the company has adopted for its high-horsepower tractor ranges. It has the highest conversion efficiency in the industry of 95 per cent and has multiple advantages for customers. First of all, it’s an evolution of the Stage IIIB EcoBlue solution, so there’s no change in the way the machine operates. It’s highly efficient with low fuel and AdBlue consumption, and because of the simple installation, it’s able to deliver the same or more power than its predecessor. The best-in-class cab design makes the T9’s impressive proportions shrink around the operator and is packed with features that make operation easy and comfortable. The SideWinder II armrest provides four paddle controls for the remote valves, that fall immediately to hand, with the remaining four valves either controlled by the CommandGrip or jointly by the CommandGrip and an additional two paddles. Some of New Holland’s customers expressed a preference for paddles to control remote valves, so they added a two-paddle pod to raise the number of paddle controlled valves to six. The upgraded T9 also introduces a new PTO gearing that delivers 1,000rpm PTO speed at 1,800 revs instead of the 2,000 of its predecessor. STUDENT OF THE YEAR Edward Payne, Ballymoe, Castlerea, Co Roscommon is the 2014 winner of the Teagasc Student of the Year award. In congratulating all of the finalists, Director of Teagasc, Professor Gerry BoyIe said that he was impressed with the high calibre of student receiving the awards. “You have done extremely well and made full use of the opportunity that the education courses provide. It’s a proud day for you and your families. I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of my colleagues in the Teagasc education service, in the Teagasc colleges, the private colleges and through the advisory service in the regional education centres. I would also like to thank FBD for their ongoing and continued support for the awards. FBD have been a constant for the last 30 years, supporting excellence in agricultural education.” The students receiving awards have been chosen from those who have completed the level 6 agricultural training programmes with Teagasc in 2014. he awards, sponsored by FBD Trust for the 30th successive year, were presented by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD in Dublin recently. Edward Payne completed a level 6 Specific Purpose Certificate in Farm Administration at the Agricultural College in Mountbellew in Co Galway. Edward jointly manages the family farm with his father. Originally a suckler/sheep farm five years ago, the decision was made to convert to dairy farming and 140 dairy heifers were purchased. Edward now manages the dairy enterprise which has expanded to 260 cows. He is convinced of the need to use genomic bulls and in 2014 the replacement heifer calves had an EBI of 202. He aims to maximize milk from grass with concentrates kept to just 0.5 tonne per cow per annum. He measures and budgets grass weekly and has an ongoing grass reseeding programme. Edward’s goal is to establish another dairy farm in the next 5 years. He works very closely with his Teagasc Adviser, Seamus Nolan and is involved in 2 farmer discussion groups. Speaking at the event, Minister Simon Coveney congratulated the 13 finalists who were chosen from almost 800 students who completed agricultural training programmes with Teagasc in 2014; “I congratulate all of the finalists on reaching this stage of the competition. It is a great achievement and a proud day for you and your families. The influx of so many enthusiastic, well trained young people is a very positive development for the agricultural sector, which will benefit greatly from your skills, knowledge and enthusiasm in the years ahead. Minister Coveney added “I would like to express my appreciation to Teagasc for their strong commitment to agricultural education and to FBD Trust for their ongoing spon-

sorship of these awards, which are now in their 30th year”. The continuing positivity toward agricultural education is something I strongly support. The First Runner up Award was presented to Michael Kennedy, Bridestown, Glenville, Co Cork. He completed a level 6 Advanced Certificate in Agriculture (Dairy Farm Management), at the Teagasc Agricultural College in Kildalton. Michael now manages the home dairy herd of 110 cows as his father is in fulltime employment off the farm. Michael’s priority is to lift the current herd EBI without compromising fertility. He is putting a big emphasis on his HerdPlus report and particularly the EBI sub –indices for fertility etc. He is applying knowledge gained at Kildalton to measure grass weekly and utilise the grass wedge for grass budgeting. He is also using the Teagasc eProfit Monitor and maintains a comprehensive set of performance records. He is involved in two discussion groups and utilises the local Teagasc advisory service. The Second Runner Up award went to James Kealy, Bendenstown, Rathoe, Co Carlow who completed a Level 6 Specific Purpose Certificate in farm administration at the Teagasc Regional Education Centre, in Tinahely. James is not originally from a farming background being a 7th generation carpenter. He bought 16 acres of land and developed a passion for farming and grew the farming platform through leasing arrangements. James started a suckler herd in 2008. He drew up a 5 year plan as part of his Green Cert course and converted to milk production as a new entrant. He is now milking 80 cows and would like to expand to 120. Herd EBI of replacement heifers is 160. James is involved in 2 discussion groups and works closely with the Teagasc education and advisory services.

Slurry Mixing Pump: Flemings have introduced a new value for money high output slurry mixing pump to the UK and Irish market for 2015, The SP100 is a value for money no frills high output fully galvanised mixing unit for farms with no requirement for a top-fill facility. Recent in-house tests have shown a fuel consumption of approximately 13L of fuel per hour on a 95HP tractor working at 540 revs.

W
hat’s better, a chance to save time or money? Why not both? Blaney Agri have achieved this with the unrivalled SwathAir silage conditioner, commonly known by farmers as a waffler or a Swather. But those who were lucky enough to see the machine at the nationwide demo tour events or at the recent Balmoral Show can appreciate it is more than just a machine to turn the grass over. Blaney Agri engineers have developed this machine to address the problem of drying grass for better quality silage in short windows of good weather. This all sounds simple, but given our unpredictable weather, if cut grass gets rain after tedding, the drying process will become more laborious and time consuming. This combined with raking can mean more water and dirt is introduced to the sward. The theory behind the SwathAir machine is that it is better to make the silage higher rather than wider meaning if it rains there is less surface area exposed, going back to the theory of the hay stack.
So what’s the problem? Producing high quality silage is now more important than ever given the cost of supplementary feed. Considerable volumes of water are put into silos or bales when unwilted grass is ensiled. This encourages extensive fermentation, which is difficult to control, and produces excessive effluent taking with it much of the valuable nutrients required for the animals performance, affecting your profit.
So how can you make better silage? The Blaney SwathAir is developed to maximise air induction and to turn swards, to dry the damp grass underneath, touching the ground, which has not benefited from the wilting process. An innovative “flick-out”TM rotor is also available which teases apart the longer grass leafs, creating an optimized sward structure for air circulation, enhancing the rate of drying. So when Blaney development engineer Dave Wills was asked how is this possible, he stated that, ‘By accelerating the centre of the sward, and separating the grass from its parallel mowed position to an alternate pattern introduces more stalk gaps for improved wind drying and less damage caused by unforeseen rain compared to condition spreading. Results have shown 75% less effluent comes from wilted grass using the SwathAir than direct cut silage. Baled silage where the Blaney SwathAir has been used on the sward should result in 28% dry matter (DM) compared to 19% DM for untreated grass.’ Dave continued to state that, ’Blaney’s Sward Rebuilding TechnologyTM ensures that round bales are packed fuller for a better shape. This will result in up to 30% less bales and greatly reduce unnecessary wrapping costs per hectare.’ So in simple terms, you will get better quality silage in less time, and as you can see from the photograph, better, more compact bales. What makes the Blaney SwathAir unique? This is the only machine on the market that can offer an extra sward conditioning process to crack up the ligaments in the stalks and assist in further removal
of the grass’ water retaining waxy coating. The unique body, developed through ongoing research and simulation can be adjusted according to the weight of grass to ensure optimum sward rebuild, by breaking up the plugs in the grass and teasing them out. This helps create a sward ideally suited to the baler. The doors have been developed for better sward control, while the wheels are larger lower ground pressure tyres suited to softer ground conditions. The 2.5m SwathAir Pro has options that make it capable of working with up to 30ft swards, while the 2.2m model is capable of working with up to 16ft swards. An adjustable angle head-stock moves the position of the sward on the ground after conditioning. This is extremely beneficial when working in wet ground conditions where it is necessary to transfer the grass/straw across onto drier ground. 90% of all baled silage in Ireland is currently harvested by contractors, with little grass being ted. The farmer usually wants the grass left lying for it to dry and then needs it lifted before the next rain shower. But with contractors under increasing pressure to keep everyone happy and get grass baled and wrapped before it rains, this means it’s up to the farmer to make a difference and make the most of his silage crop. Experience shows that consistently good silage results from attention to detail at all stages of silage making – in the field, ensiling and at feed out. A
pproaching the busiest period of the year for mechanised activity on Irish farms, the association suggests that it is an opportune time for farm machinery businesses to consider implementation of the FTMTA ProDealer credit policy. The policy is designed to improve the cashflow position in the farm machinery industry by tackling the longstanding issues around credit in the sector. The viability and sustainability of the farm machinery sector overall and of many individual businesses is endangered by inadequate control of credit. Many dealerships have levels of outstanding debtors that are totally disproportionate to their turnover. As well as the amount owed, there is a substantial problem with the age of some of the debt. Such a situation, in the long term, benefits neither supplier nor customer. It is in the interests of FTMTA members’ customers that a viable, local farm machinery industry continues to exist to deliver the support that they require. The association has calculated that it is costing many dealerships up to 20% of the book value of their debtors to collect the money owed. This is made up of staff costs, cost of money and write-downs. It is unlikely that any sector can take such a cost and the machinery trade certainly cannot. The sector is one of tight margins with limited availability of working capital and much reduced credit from suppliers at the
wholesale level. The benchmark figure to gauge the health of the farm machinery sector has traditionally been the registrations of new tractors. A look at the current numbers gives an indication of how challenging an environment the farm machinery sector is. The registrations of tractors in 2014 were the highest that they had been since 2008, but were still considerably less than half of what they were in 2008. The situation deteriorated in the first four months of 2015, with registrations down 7% compared with last year. The FTMTA policy allows for the provision of credit, but on an agreed basis. A detailed document in relation to the FTMTA ProDealer credit policy has been prepared, which contains step-by-step guidelines as well as templates for the documentation required to implement the policy fully and successfully in a farm machinery business.
