Launch of EnviroCom Awards 2014

An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Carrie Smyth and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Chamber President Dr Josephine Browne officially launched the 2014 EnviroCom Awards in April. The Awards, which are free to enter, are open to any business irrespective of size or sector, agency or non-profit organisation operating in the county.

Speaking at the launch, Eoghan Lehane of the Commissioners of Irish Lights said that “The Award recognised Irish Lights’ delivery of environmentally responsible Marine Aids to Navigation for over 20 years while at the same time maintaining the very high reliability required for a safety-critical marine navigation service.”

The Awards, which have been rewarding excellence in environmental management since 2007, are organised by the Chamber with support from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council

Margaret Coles, Green Business Officer Dún Laoghaire– Rathdown County Council, who sits on the judging panel, commented that “When selecting winners for the Envirocom Awards entries are assessed in terms of their innovation, replicability, environmental, social and economic benefits to their communities .”

Organisers of the EnviroCom Awards called on businesses and communities to “enter the Awards and showcase how they save money, and are sustainable by keeping environmental protection on the radar.” The Awards were officially launched at the offices of the Commissioners of Irish Lights, who won an EnviroCom Award in 2013 for their innovative programme to save energy, reduce operating costs and increase the reliability of their service by using renewable energy technologies and LED lights to power lighthouses and navigational buoys.

6

Previous winners include Vodafone, JC Decaux, UCD, SpecSavers, Aidan Fitzgerald Hair Salon, Seapoint Rugby Club and the Stillorgan Village Centre. There are no entry fees for the EnviroCom Awards and applications must be received by Friday, 27th June 2014. ‘When to start Junior Infants?’ Dilemma Sharavogue Junior School has been established for 31 years. Small classes of 10 – 14 children with mixed age groups enables the children to grow in confidence and learn with enjoyment. We follow the Department of Education National Curriculum and continue to employ the Montessori principles of teaching enabling each of the children to move at their own pace. For children born between March and June – the question of whether to start them in Junior Infants at 4 years or 5 years always brings lots of discussion.

and concentration which with an additional year are more developed and make for an easier transition into the next stage.

For many developmental milestones, we find that every child is different. Even within the same family, one child may walk or talk many months before the next, In Sharavogue, we have a unique Transition Class (T1) in so many of the quoted milestones for children are our Junior School. generalisations. Likewise there are no hard and fast rules for sending your child to school at 4 or 5. The T1 class was set up almost 8 years ago as a bridging class between the Senior Montessori class and the Advantages Of Starting School At 5 Years Junior Infants. It is particularly suited to children who • Physically – With the additional 12 months of have their 4th birthday from March onwards and whose growing and developing, the children are more parents are facing the dilemma of whether they are able for playground situations which can often be ready for Junior Infants. one of the most daunting things about starting school. The (25% of their lives to date!) of social interaction children all move at their own pace as opposed to a rote with their peers, teachers and the world around learning format. Making Home Improvements By Helen Cassidy Decorating Decorating is the one task that even the most DIYphobic can turn their hands to. More importantly, it is relatively cheap and can make a huge difference to your home. Here are a few hints on how to go about it. Preparation Whatever kind of decorating you are doing, proper preparation is essential. If you are decorating a wall that is already papered, the old wallpaper needs to be completely removed. Tear off the outer layer and then use a steamer to remove the last traces of the inner layer. If you are painting the wall, remove any last traces of paste with a proprietary detergent. Untitled-1 1

25/10/2013 18:36

If you are painting woodwork for the first time, apply knotting solution to any knots and then seal the wood with undercoat or watered down emulsion. When reglossing woodwork, sand down the old paintwork to give the coat something to key to. Fill in any holes, cracks or gaps with decorator’s filler; this comes in tubs or tubes and can be applied with a mastic gun. Allow to dry and then sand down before painting it. Also fill in any holes or cracks in plaster before painting. If you are not confident in the accuracy of your brushwork, apply masking tape to the unpainted edge making sure there are no creases in the tape. Don’t forget to thoroughly cover all exposed surfaces with dust sheets before you start decorating Wallpapering Wallpaper is expensive, time consuming to apply and can be overwhelming if used to decorate the whole room. It makes sense to just paper one wall as a feature wall. Before you start, make sure you have the right equipment, a pasting table, tub for the paste, large pair of sharp scissors and papering brush. A tape measure and craft knife are also useful. Hang your first piece into the corner of the room. Measure the drop against the wall and mark the point where you will cut across the roll. Use a spirit level to mark a vertical line just less than a paper’s width from the corner. Apply plenty of paste to the back of the paper, folding it as you go to keep the piece to a manageable length. Line up one edge of the sheet with the vertical mark and then use the papering brush to smooth it evenly against the wall and press it into the corners. Score a line along the corners with a fingernail, peel the paper back slightly and cut along each score mark. The paper will now fit perfectly. Repeat the process by butting each new drop against the edge of the sheet you have already laid.

12

Emulsioning Upmarket brands of paint such as Farrow and Ball are very popular right now, but they are also very expensive. Much of their appeal lies in the traditional colour palette they employ, so a more cost effective option is to have Dulux colour match paint mixed up in the exact shade you want. Start at the top and work your way down, so do the ceiling first and then the walls, leaving the woodwork until last. Using a roller to cover the bulk of the area is much quicker and you will get a more even finish. Usually you can get away with just one coat too. Money spent on a high quality brush is never wasted. Don’t overload the brush with paint and reload it frequently. Use slow careful strokes into the corners; your strokes should all be in the same direction. If you do slip, just wipe off the excess paint with a damp cloth. Always apply two coats with the brush. If all of this sounds just a little too much – get in the professionals!

Recipe

Recipe: Chicken Caesar Salad

d n’s

p This is one of the classic salads; it was actually invented in Mexico by a chef named Caesar! The addition of chicken turns it into a great light lunch. It is one of my favourite salads and is often on my menu for lunch.

Method:

INGREDIENTS

- 2 cooked chicken breasts lettuce - 2 x Baby gem lettuce or 1 x Romaine - 150g Mayonnaise - 8 anchovies - 2 tbsp Worcester sauce shaving - 100g grated parmesan plus extra for - 2 cloves garlic - Juice of 1 lemon - Salt & pepper le with - Croutons – cube stale bread and drizz 150C t abou at oven an oil, season and bake in until golden and crunchy

1

Place the mayonnaise, garlic, anchovies, Worcester sauce, grated parmesan and half of the lemon juice in a food processor. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust with the remaining lemon juice, salt and pepper.

2

Cut the root end of the lettuce off and separate the leaves; leave out any soft outer leaves and use only the more yellow inner leaves which are crunchy and sweeter. Place the leaves in a mixing bowl and spoon in as much sauce as you like to coat the leaves – toss them in the bowl until coated. Slice the chicken and warm in an oven for 2-3 minutes. Place the coated leaves in a serving bowl and sprinkle the croutons over. Then add the strips of chicken, the anchovies and shave extra parmesan over the top.

Money Finance Lifestyle

By Brian Cunneen of O’Neill / Cunneen / McCarthy Solicitors

The What, Why and When of Wills Our suggestion for this month is that you make a Will It looks like the economy is finally turning a corner and that things are getting better so, plan ahead and make a Will! What is a Will? A Will sets out how you would like to dispose of your property on your death to your loved ones. Your Will appoints one or more people to manage this process after you have passed away. There are very strict rules as regards what is a valid Will, so consult a Solicitor. Why? A Will is the only way to ensure that whatever you leave is distributed with minimum delay. It makes sure that your wishes are known and followed. You can, subject to certain rules (see below), control who will inherit. Perhaps you might like to leave specific assets (e.g. jewelry) to someone, make provision for a family member with a disability or maybe leave a charitable donation.

half of the estate. If there are children, the entitlement is one-third of your estate, but your children are not necessarily entitled to the rest. However, if you don’t have a valid Will, you will die “intestate”. The rules on intestacy are totally different. If there are have no children, on intestacy, your spouse/ civil partner inherits your entire estate. If you have children, your spouse/civil partner will inherit twothirds, and one-third is divided equally between your children. These two sets of rules apply even if you have been separated (physically but not legally) for many years from your ex and you haven’t put the paperwork in place! Everyone’s circumstances are different and the above is therefore general information only and not legal advice. For further information please obtain legal/ tax advice.

Alternatively you may want to appoint guardians for children to look after them and make the “big decisions” if something were to happen to you. For any deaths (or indeed gifts made) after 6th December, 2012, children will pay CAT Tax at a rate of 33% on anything they inherit from parents above a threshold of €225,000. For inheritances by siblings, nieces/nephews, grandchildren (and potentially parents) the threshold is €30,150. For everyone else, the limit is €15,075. Gifts or inheritances between spouses/civil partners are exempt from CAT. Don’t forget that even if you are in negative equity, your Mortgage Protection Policy could potentially discharge your mortgage if you die. With careful Tax and Estate planning, you could minimise any Tax your beneficiaries might have to pay.

Purchase And Sale Of Private Property Landlord And Tenant Law Trusts And Family Property Arrangements Wills • Probate Corporate And Commercial

When? If you already have made a will-up date it! It is generally recommended that people make fresh Wills when financial (moving house) or particularly family situations change (divorce/ separation, birth/ adoption etc.). Legal Right Share & Intestacy If you make a valid Will, your spouse/civil partner is entitled to a minimum “Legal Right Share” of your estate. If there are no children, this entitlement is one-

Shankill man raises funds for the Irish Cancer Society sessions at three week intervals and is due to finish in the middle of May 2014. What has really blown me away is the fact that I am experiencing VERY little reaction to my chemotherapy. Most of the medication I take counteracts the side effects of chemotherapy. I am really impressed that this is the way it is. These results could only have been achieved by the considerable time and effort that must have been put in by countless doctors, nurses, researchers, volunteers etc in the past. These days, cancer is not spelt ‘CANCER’, it’s spelt ‘cancer’, it doesn’t even begin with a capital ‘C’ any more. Thanks to all this effort in the past, I am effectively living a normal life. I am symptom free apart from being occasionally tired and breathless. I want to do something positive to ensure that this valuable work continues, so that people who are affected by cancer in the future will be able to avail of the best support services that can be provided.

Patrick Faull, IT/Typing trainer from Shankill was diagnosed with cancer early this year. Some people would have struggled with the news, but Patrick has decided not to let it beat him. We asked Patrick to tell us about his story so far. In early January 2014 I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. As you can imagine it came as a great shock. However, in the end the news wasn’t nearly as bad as it could have been. After my treatment I am expected to achieve complete remission. My form of lymphoma is very treatable and responds very well to conventional chemotherapy. Everything has gone swimmingly; I was diagnosed within a week, seen by the consultant within another week, and commenced treatment less than ten days later. My treatment includes six chemotherapy

My goal is to raise over €5,000 for the Irish Cancer Society. My campaign will run until June 2014 and I am doing this through two events. The first event was a sponsored head shave which raised the first €1,700. I supported Today FM’s Shave or Dye campaign by shaving my hair and beard at the end of February. The second event will be a sponsored hill walk in the Wicklow Mountains, which will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2014. This walk will start from the Wicklow Gap car park at 11am. This walk is suitable for most people, both young and old and weather permitting will give spectacular views over the Wicklow mountains. Please bring a packed lunch, suitable walking boots and appropriate wet weather gear. It’s not suitable for babies in wheeled buggies. Donations will be taken on the day. For more up to date information please check the website below. Why not come and join me on the day. You can donate as well as take part in the walk by going to www.mycharity.ie/event/patricks-hairraising-event. Many thanks for your support and remember - I have lymphoma but it doesn’t have ME.

From the very beginning I felt that I had made the right choice with Des and he surely proved it. You couldn't find a better agent, ever.
