The show will also see the return of the History of Silage Machinery demonstration. Precision chop demo, silage wagon demos, Forager demos & numerous other vintage silage demos will take place on the day The show is to include a grand finale BIG CUT with all machines in attendance including as many single chops as possible will be given the opportunity to cut the large 25 acre field. The club is currently looking for unusual or historic silage machinery, and owners of such machinery are encouraged to get in contact.

Welcome to Issue 260 of Farm & Plant Buyers’ Guide. It’s hard to believe that we are in business over ten years and in this time we have never had a chance to attend the Bannow & Rathangan Show. Over the years we have heard great things about it but for one reason or another we never seemed to be able to trade at this historic event. This year things changed and for the 65th anniversary of the show Farm & Plant were on site to meet and greet some 20,000 show attendees. The weather was good and we had a fantastic day! From now on, expect to see us in the Sunny Southeast for this superb event. Next on our hit list is of course the Tullamore Show taking place on August the 10th. This single day event is one of the largest shows we attend and in this issue the organisers are advising people to pre purchase tickets online to skip the queues. FTMTA Farm Machinery Show 2015

he FTMTA Farm Machinery Show, Ireland’s largest dedicated farm machinery event and also the largest indoor agricultural event in Ireland, will return to Punchestown Racecourse on February 5th, 6th and 7th, 2015. The exhibitor application pack for the Show will be issued later in the summer and will automatically be sent to all exhibitors at the most recent FTMTA events. Czech Ambassador Attends Zetor Dealer Conference

etor main dealers from all parts of Ireland recently took part in a one-day sales conference held at the Killeshin Hotel, Portlaoise at which the Guest of Honour was Czech Ambassador to Ireland, Mrs. Hana Mottlova. Welcomed by our sales director, John O’Brien, Mrs. Mottlova opened the conference and spoke to a packed attendance about her objective to foster closer trade links between the Czech Republic and Ireland and the important contribution Zetor was making. In that regard she praised the work being done by McHale Plant Sales and its dealer organisation in promoting sales of Zetor tractors in Ireland and in furthering the position of a brand that has been part of Ireland’s farming landscape since the 1940s.

At the event, delegates were given an overview of the tractor market pointing to the growth in sales that has taken place in recent times in line with the improving agricultural economy. Growth was forecast to continue, with tractors in the 100 120hp segment likely to show the greatest growth in sales. In this regard, with their significant experience, the expansion that is taking place within the Zetor model range

Urgent Action Demanded From Minister On Beef

FA National Livestock Chairman Henry Burns has accused the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney of not taking the beef crisis seriously and failing to tackle the factories over the way they have abused farmers this spring and torn up the Quality Payment System by imposing dual base prices, new and additional weight and age specification price cuts. Henry Burns was speaking following a Dail debate on the beef crisis, which Minister did not attend because he was travelling in the USA. He said the Minister needs to urgently address the domestic crisis in the beef sector with the factories as otherwise he will not have a viable and sustainable beef sector to promote overseas. “Minister Coveney fails to understand that for Ireland to have a strong beef export sector, we must have a profitable farm sector with viable prices for producers.” Henry Burns said IFA has repeatedly requested Minister Coveney to intervene with the factories and insist that they honour the agreement they entered into with farmers on the Quality Payment System. IFA has also demanded that

the Minister remove the roadblocks impeding the live trade to Northern Ireland, which is vital for price competition. Minister Coveney needs to be much more proactive and supportive of the live export trade, essential for price competition in the sector. The Livestock leader said the Dail debate was helpful in

continuing to highlight the problems and the inaction of the Minister on the factories and the beef crisis. However, he said more TDs needed to get involved and reflect the real income in livestock as opposed to blindly defending their Minister when it is clear urgent action needs to be taken.

Simon Coveney To Keep Position

esponding to the Cabinet recent announcement, IFA President Eddie Downey said he and his Association look forward to working closely with the Minister for Agriculture and he wished Simon Coveney continued success in the position. The IFA President said “There is a long agenda of serious issues impacting on the incomes and wellbeing of farm families that needs to be urgently addressed.” The IFA President noted that the role in agriculture is a very demanding job and he said that farmers will expect Minister Coveney to ensure his additional Defence portfolio does not leave any issue of concern to farm families neglected. Eddie Downey wished the Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Tánaiste Joan Burton and the newly appointed Cabinet and Ministers well, and said the IFA looks forward to the Government’s continued support for farm families and the agriculture sector.

FENDT 1000 VARIO The Fendt 1000 Vario is a complete newly developed standard high-horsepower tractor from the Fendt brand.

ith a new power class from 380 – 500 hp, it has been specially designed as a powerful draft tractor for the global market. It looks amazing with its compact design and the new x5 S cab, including the award-winning, fully integrated Fendt Variotronic. In addition to compliance with the legal regulations of emissions Stage 4 / Tier 4 Final, AGCO/ Fendt has equipped its new 1000 Vario tractor series with the latest engine and transmission technology. The new Fendt high-horsepower tractor will be available from dealers in the fourth quarter of 2015. The Fendt 1000 Vario is a standard tractor, which, like all Fendt series, is distinguished by ease of operation and simple handling. It has a maximum height of 3.60 metres and an unladen weight of 14 tonnes. Compared to conventional design concepts in the 500 hp power class, it is considerably lighter, more manoeuvrable and has better visibility, which makes it clearly more versatile. The Fendt 1000 Vario is designed for a wide range of applications: despite being developed for heavy-duty field work, it is absolutely roadworthy, with a top speed of up to 60 km/h. Thanks to newly developed, large tyres (diameter at rear up to 2.35 metres) and flexible ballasting, the high-performance draft tractor is highly efficient in putting power to the ground. Together with the integral tyre pressure regulation system VarioGrip, this enables a significant increase in pulling power. The Fendt 1000 Vario was developed for the international market. With a 60-inch track, it has also been designed for row crop markets, such as North America or Australia. The rear power lift is available in an American version with a quick-hitch frame or swinging drawbar. The new high-horsepower tractor is also available as a pure draft tractor in a version without a rear power lift or, optionally, with a reversing driver station. The well-known x5 cab from the Fendt 800 Vario – 900 Vario series has been completely redesigned and, as the x5 S cab, now offers considerably more working comfort and improved climate control. The interior panelling has an easy to clean soft-touch surface with a pleasant feel. For enhanced operating comfort, the cockpit now swings parallel along with the steering

wheel. Due to the size of the Fendt 1000 Vario, the side windows and windscreen have been lowered by another 80 mm for optimal sightlines and a generous sense of space. Furthermore, additional storage spaces have been integrated in the cab and there are more drink and document holders. The driver door to the cab is 85 mm wider. There are two different positions possible for the step treads, so the entry steps can be adapted to the tyres. Roof work lights with cross-wise illumination, which prevents shadows on the roof of the cab, provide especially precise illumination. The integral lights on the bonnet give the Fendt 1000 Vario a new, powerful look. A powerful air-conditioning system with twin blowers and its own fresh air blower ensures perfect climate control. A new, higher air flow, evaporator and 16 air nozzles create a pleasant climate in the cab and provide uniform, low-draft ventilation. Twelve integrated air nozzles in the steering column and an optional heated windscreen made of laminated safety glass ensure a clear view. The 300° windscreen wiper with integral spray nozzle in the wiper arm, familiar from the 800 and 900 Vario, ensures a free view to the wheel arches in all weather conditions, and is assisted by an additional 250° wiper including spray nozzle on the right side window. A camera integrated in the Dieselross emblem on the bonnet offers best visibility to the front mounting area. An optional leather seat with heating and active climate control ensures the best sitting comfort. The new passenger seat can be used as a fold-down table and has a clamp fitting for documents. Additional sockets on the right-hand side open a host of possibilities in terms of power supply and data exchange with implements and external terminals. Furthermore, an active cooling function has been integrated in the side compartment in the new x5 S cab. The Fendt 1000 Vario will be available in four different power configurations: Fendt 1038 Vario (380 hp), Fendt 1042 Vario (420 hp), Fendt 1046 Vario (460 hp) and the top model Fendt 1050 Vario with a maximum output of 500 hp (to ECE R24). The design of the block construction unites maximum payload with optimal manoeuvrability. The high-horsepower tractor is equipped with a compact 12.4 litre six-cylinder engine

from MAN. The powerful, quiet engine proves itself more than 25,000 times every year in the commercial vehicle sector. High torque, which is already available in the low speed range, gives the vehicle high driving dynamics. The engine is compact, the common rail high-pressure injection ensures outstanding atomisation and combustion and therefore low fuel consumption. The time-tested, stepless Vario transmission has been further developed to the transmission-rear axle module TA 400 (transaxle) for an output of up to 500 hp. It has hydrostatic-mechanical power-splitting and is marked by extreme profitability, maximum efficiency, long lifetime and reliability. The rear PTO, which features a direct drive from the engine through to the PTO gearbox, has outstanding efficiency. The tractor-management system TMS, with automatic maximum output control 2.0, automatically controls the ground speed and engine speed dependent on load. The effect: the target speed is reached quickly and kept constant, driving is more dynamic, even under load, and, when required, immediate acceleration is possible through the kick-down mode. To meet country-specific market demands, the Fendt 1000 Vario will be offered with a top speed of 40, 50 or 60 km/h. A comprehensive chassis and safety concept (VarioGrip, Fendt Stability Control, independent wheel suspension, dual-circuit brakes, Reaction steering system, assistance systems for deceleration and brake light) guarantees maximum safety on the road and in the field. The new Fendt 1000 features high-capacity hydraulics with two highly efficient hydraulic circuits. Two independent axial piston pumps can meet the demands for different flow and pressure levels in the two circuits according to need. Thanks to filter monitoring, the maintenance interval for the hydraulic oil is 2,000 operating hours or 24 months. This long interval further reduces maintenance costs. The transmission and hydraulic oil supplies are separate. The oils cannot mix, which guarantees active transmission protection. It is therefore possible to use bio-hydraulic oils for the working hydraulics. The lower links at the rear can be brought into park position without requiring tools and there is more clearance between the lower links and the drawbar.

Strong Interst From Overseas At Recent Plant Auction

cHale Plant Sales registered a strong online presence of overseas buyers for their second used equipment auction which took place at their Birdhill headquarters recently. Buyers from the UK, Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary and from as faraway as the USA and Middle East took part in the event through iBidder, supplementing a strong local attendance of bidders who journeyed to Birdhill for the event. Reaction was described by McHale Plant Sales Equipment Sales Manager, Denis McGrath as ‘very good and positive’ with roughly half of the 200 lots going under the hammer with negotiations ongoing for a number of high ticket items. What was described as ‘a good mixture of lots’ included landscaping and farming equipment, general construction and quarry equipment plus some interesting commercial items such as cars, van and trucks with the majority fetching good ex-VAT prices. Examples included a 1997 Fermec 860 sold for €11,500, a 2002 JCB 3CX sold for €23,000. a 2006 Hitachi ZX130LC sold for €33,000 and a NewHolland T6050 tractor sold for €32,000. Their next auction, for which lots are now being accepted, is planned for the Thursday, 2nd October next.

Northern Ireland Faces Skills Shortage In Construction

new survey has revealed that Northern Ireland’s construction sector has experienced its fourth successive quarter of growth. However, the sector also continues to face a skills shortage. According to the latest RICS Construction Market Survey (Q2 2014), a majority of sub-sectors within the industry experienced growth in the second quarter of the year, with the overall growth in workload rising at its fastest pace since the end of 2004. Respondents also commented on a skills shortage in relation to quantity surveyors, other construction professionals and blue collar workers. Commenting on the findings, RICS Northern Ireland Director, Ben Collins, said: “Northern Ireland chartered surveyors saw their workloads rise for the fourth quarter in a row, with evidence of growth broadbased in the sector, and private commercial work in particular seeing strong rates of expansion. “As the recovery continues, firms are reporting evidence of skills shortages emerging. We are also getting indications from local third-level education establish-

ments that enrollment levels for construction-related courses are at low levels. With skills shortages emerging and the pipeline of professionals potentially hampered by fewer students enrolling on construction related courses, this gives us real cause for concern. “It highlights the need for the construction sector to think seriously about how to attract, retain and progress more people, particularly women, in the sector. Figures suggest that women make up just 11% of the construction sector, with

Further Calls To Protect Poolbeg Chimneys

here have been further calls made to protect Dublin’s Poolbeg chimneys from demolition. Last week, it was reported by the Irish Times that the iconic structures could be destroyed because ESB believe the volume of structural and repair works needed to keep the chimneys standing might not make the best use of resources available. Following the announcement, there were calls to save the chimneys and this stance has since been repeated by Fianna Fáil. The party’s Group on Dublin City Council has requested that Dublin City Council now initiate a process of listing the Poolbeg Chimneys on the city’s Record of Protected Structures. Fianna Fáil Group Leader, Paul McAuliffe, said: “It would appear that the ESB may be in a position to demolish the structures without consulting any outside body and we believe that they should be retained and incorporated into to any future plans for the area.” Local Fianna

Fáil Councillor for Pembroke and South Dock, Frank Kennedy, added: “I’m dismayed to hear that the ESB is contemplating knocking down the Poolbeg chimneys. These are an iconic image of Dublin City and Dublin Bay that mean a great deal to so many the capital’s residents, especially to those living by the sea in Sandymount and

Ringsend. “Having grown up under their shadow, I can’t imagine the strand without the famous Sandymount Stacks. Dublin City Council should do everything in its power to ensure the preservation of this great landmark.” The Poolbeg power station has not been operational since it closure in 2010.

he date is 1972, Ford had introduced its turbo charged 7000 the year before of which they boasted that at 94hp it was the most powerful tractor generally available at the time. Massey Ferguson had broken new ground with it’s 91hp articulated 1200 and David Brown offered their top of the range 1212 at 71 hp. None of these tractors, or any of their contemporaries, offered much in the way of driver comfort except for padded seats that bounced and cabs that varied in effectiveness at excluding gentle side winds. However, over in Scandanavia things were different, quite quite different in fact, for that year a young engineer by the name of Hannu Niskanen had settled upon creating a six wheeled tractor as part of his engineering degree thesis that took tractor design by the scruff of the neck and shook it up to a degree that had probably not been seen since Mr Fergusson had introduced his linkage system that was guided by engineering principles rather than the simple desire to replace a horse with an engine. The result of Hannus’s work was the Valmet 1502, a remarkable tractor whose most obvious feature is the third axle, making it a purpose built six wheeled machine although initially the front wheels were not driven. To realise its true genius however we must look

beyond it’s space age appearance and consider instead the geometry of its layout and to help us understand just why it is so special we can turn to the words of the designer who not only played a significant part in the development of Valmet/Valtra tractors but was also a great chronicler of the company’s history. “The secret of the smooth ride was the positioning of the drivers seat at the centre of gravity (sic) of the even sided triangle formed by the front axle suspension point and bogie beam bearing points. At that precise point vertical movements are at a minimum.” In other words the driver was placed where the least movement would be felt due to the rear four wheels being mounted on a bogie that was attached to the transmission at the point where the drive shafts would normally emerge. In fact it wasn’t even a single bogie but two individual beams, one each side of the tractor and the effect was indeed to produce a ride quality that simply wasn’t available in any conventional machine of the time, and not a coil spring in sight! The axle geometry was not the only feature that contributed to the vehicles handling for the small wheels ensured that directional stability was also maintained which was important as this tractor was intended

as much for forestry work and hauling logs to the processing plant as it was for farming. The 1502 came with another great innovation and that was a cab designed to look after the driver rather than just be a roll cage with windows. Valmet had been somewhat ahead of the game when it came to ergonomics and the large cab with a flat floor, heating and oversized roof to provide shade were novelties for the time. The six cylinder engine was also new and laid the foundation for all subsequent Sisu diesel motors with a 1.1 litre per cylinder format that is still present in their latest engines. At 150hp it was also packed a great deal more power than the competition at the time so what became of it? Unfortunately, it’s introduction in 1975 coincided with the oil crisis and at 7.5 tonnes in 6WD form it was a heavy machine to drive around with a consequent thirst for fuel. The exact number that were actually made is a matter of debate but it amounted to only a few dozen although it’s spirit lived on in various forestry forwarding tractors. Sadly, Hannu Niskanen passed away earlier this year but his contribution to the success of the company as well as his development of this forward thinking vehicle is not forgotten by Valtra who have published several of his books charting the history of tractor production in the Nordic countries.

NEW HOLLAND SKID STEER New Holland continues to impress as they upgrade to Tier IV in the construction skid steer loader range.

nvestment continues within CNH as New Holland upgrade to Tier IV Final mid-range models in the line of skid steer loaders and compact tracked loaders. Some models in the New Holland Construction 200 Series of compact machines will now benefit from three Tier 4 Final compliant models, including the new L216 skid steer loader. Others, for the time being, will continue to offer fuel-efficient Tier 4 Interim engine configurations. This new generation of skid steer and compact track loaders maintains the same compact dimensions of the previous models while delivering more power and torque than before. The two mid-size models of the New Holland Construction skid steer loader range meet the stringent Tier 4 Final emission standards with a diesel oxidation catalyst-only solution that delivers considerable benefits in fuel saving, performance and maintenance convenience. The L220 model gets tougher with a four-cylinder, turbocharged 67 hp engine which delivers a 12% increase of horsepower and it is tuned for a robust 22% boost in peak torque to 208 Nm and a rated operating capacity of 905 kg. FCI NEWSLETTER Trailer Road Traffic Regulations Set To Change

huge amount of any contractors’ time is spent pulling trailers on the public road. The rules for pulling a trailer are outlined as follows according to the Road Safety Authority:

“There are three main legal instruments regulating trailers in Ireland currently: 1. The Road Traffic (Construction and Use of Vehicles) Regulations (or C&U Regulations) outline the maximum weights and dimensions for trailers. 2. The Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations (or CE&U Regulations) outline the braking and other requirements for trailers. 3. The Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) Regulations (or Lighting Regulations) outline the lighting requirements for trailers. These regulations have been substantially amended since drafting and copies of the original instruments, along with detailed lists of amendments to date are available on their standards for vehicles and trailers in use section. If you’re operating a trailer, make sure you understand your in-use requirements. Furthermore, individuals engaged in the supply of trailers also have a legal responsibility to ensure that trailers and their components comply with all applicable requirements set out in Road Traffic legislation.

RANGE ROVER SPORT VERSUS BMW X5 Ian Beatty takes time out to compare two of the biggest rivals in the SUV sector.

MW is seen as the founder of the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) or Sports Activity Vehicle as they prefer to call it. Either way, they started a new segment with the introduction of the first-generation BMW X5 in 1999. Since then various other manufacturers have followed suit, designing vehicles that combine luxury motoring with off-road prowess, even if the vast majority of owners will rarely venture further a field then the school car park. BMW’s new third-generation X5 truly combines luxury and high-end technology, along with a range of powerful yet efficient engines. The BMW X5 may be seen by many as the kingpin of the premium SUV market, but competition has never been stronger. Its foremost challenger is the all-new Range Rover Sport, successful in its own right too, with in excess of 415,000 units sold since if was first launched in 2005. This new variant has been reworked from the ground up with extreme weight savings along with the addition of new engines and transmissions. Both SUV’s are on sale in Ireland with a range of diesel and petrol engines, along with an almost endless range of optional equipment to suit all budgets and tastes. The primary seller for both is their 3.0-litre turbo diesel offerings. We test drove the BMW X5 xDrive 30d in M Sport guise and the Range Rover Sport SDV6 SE to attain a better understanding of each one’s strengths and weaknesses. Both models are easily recognisable as evolutions of their predecessors, the Range Rover Sport has taken a larger step forward over its precursor which appears somewhat dated when parked alongside this sleek new model. Pricing for the BMW X5 xDrive 30d commences from €78,950, with the M Sport variant costing from €86,810. It’s effortless to inflate this price considerably when you look at the options list, our test car

Although the adaptive LED headlights are impressive and the 20” M Sport alloy wheels rather cool, it’s difficult to justify the combined €4,375 for them. The standard level of equipment should be sufficient for most, bar a few choice extras. BMW has increased the standard kit with 19” alloy wheels, automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control with braking function all included. The Range Rover Sport has two power outputs for its 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine, the 258hp TDV6 is priced from €84,360, the more powerful 292hp SDV6 commences from €95,450. It’s not difficult to top the €100,000 mark here either. Our SE model like the X5, offers a decent level of equipment as you might expect when purchasing a vehicle in this price category. Just some of its highlights include air suspension, hill descent control, heated windscreen, heated front and rear seats, 8” touch screen and satellite navigation. The interior of the X5 is spacious and secure, with familiar BMW architecture for the instrument panel and main switch gear. The 10.25” colour screen has crystal-clear clarity and is equipped with an excellent satellite navigation system that’s intuitive to use, as it BMW’s latest iDrive operating system. There’s a distinct quality feel to all the buttons and switches throughout. The Range Rover Sport’s interior feels more luxurious in comparison, there’s less clutter on the dash with all the main controls for the entertainment systems, telephone and navigation controls integrated into one easy to use touch screen. Travelling long distances in the Range Rover Sport is something you look forward to, either as a driver or passenger. The BMW’s 3.0-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine is a silky smooth unit, delivering a respectable 258hp and 560Nm of torque. It’s mated to an eightspeed automatic transmission that’s perfectly suited to this engine. It’s an efficient power horse too, and thanks to CO2 emissions of 162g/km it’s significantly less expensive to tax in comparison to its competitor, (€570 against €1,200). The 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel in the Range Rover Sport produces a stern 292hp and 600Nm of torque, despite the additional power the X5 is fractionally faster to 100km/h from a standstill. The eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is a gem of a gearbox, you rarely find yourself requiring to change gears manually as it seems to precisely select the correct gear at the optimum speed. In the real world there is very little difference in power delivery from both SUV’s each one is equipped with selectable drive modes that alter the characteristics of the engine response along with steering and throttle sensitivity. The Range Rover Sport has the edge over the X5 in

terms of handling on twisty sections of road. It glides over bumps as if they’re not there, whereas the X5 has a tendency to tramline when you meet a furrowed section of road. The optional 20” alloy wheels with low profile tyres on our test car may have added to this effect, the ride is almost certainly more comfortable and predictable when equipped with 19” wheels. Both of these premium SUV’s excel in what they are designed for, they attract attention with their large

presence, combine luxury with competent ability both on and off-road. I don’t imagine any motorist who’s auspicious enough to be in a position to purchase either of these vehicles will be anything less then impressed with their chosen chariot. If I had to pick between the two, I’d choose the Range Rover Sport, it just edges out a narrow victory margin for me with its high-class interior and driving dynamics.

he McHale Fusion 3 Plus was launched last year at Agritechnica 2013. This integrated baler wrapper is unique in that the bale is wrapped in the bale chamber with plastic instead of traditional netwrap. After the bale is transferred to the vertical wrapping ring additional film is applied to the ends of the bale, across Europe, this process is being referred to as ‘film on film’ technology. After much debate, McHale was announced as the Gold Winner for Harvest Machinery. Royal Highland Show – Edinburgh, Scotland In July, McHale received a third prestigious award for the film on film technology used on the McHale Fusion 3 Plus at the Royal Highland Show held in Edinburgh, Scotland. McHale received an award for their Technical Innovation of the McHale Fusion 3 Plus. Film on Film technology provides a number of advantages compared to the traditional method of netwrap. These advantages include: 1. Chamber Film Acts As A Wrapping Layer The plastic is added instead of the netwrap to the barrel of the bale and holds the bale together during the bale transfer. Once the bale is transferred to the wrapper the plastic used to hold the bale together, forms part of the wrapping layers and adds value as there is more plastic applied to the largest surface of the bale than with traditional methods. 2. Chamber Film Results In Better Shaped Bales When plastic is applied to the barrel of the bale it can be stretched to approximately 20%. This stretch ratio is higher than what can be achieved with net wrap

or twine and as a result the material is kept tighter which ultimately results in better bale shape. 3. Chamber Film Delivers Higher Quality Silage As the plastic is being stretched as it is being applied to the barrel of the bale it expels more air than net wrap would and as a consequence this results in better silage quality. 4. Chamber Film Makes Recycling Easier As plastic is used to both bind the bale in the bale chamber and to wrap the bale, during the winter on feed out the farmer will be left with one form of waste. This reduces the time needed to feed the bale and avoids the unpleasant and time consuming job of separating the twine or net wrap from the plastic before the plastic can be recycled. Overall, one form of waste results in feeding time being reduced.

I spoke to Trevor and Donald Lyons, who are both very happy with the progress made with the new franchises in the past year. “It’s been a good year” says Donald, “with tractor sales better than expected. We now have over 30 units out with a further five due for delivery shortly. This past few weeks have been great with no less than five tractors sold in one week”

It was fitting therefore that the two oldest brands would once more reside in the same house although in 2014 neither brand was quite the same as in those far off days. New Holland today is a tractor company, with the Ford blue on the tractor, but also selling combines, foragers and balers, in the yellow New Holland colours. Kverneland is a plough manufacturer also selling a full range of tillage equipment, a full line of grass machinery (Taarup), plus a full range of drilling, (Accord), feeding (Siloking), plus fertiliser spreading and spraying machinery (Vicon).

“When you change a major franchise it does take a little time for your customers to accept the idea. Most of our old customers understand the changes which have occurred on the manufacturing side of things and need the certainty of a local parts and back up service. We still service all brands previously sold and have a fully trained service crew here in Kilcock”.

The wet weather stopped most farm activities and brought many farmers to Kilcock where some good bargains were to be had, both in stores and in the yard. Lyons and Burton had a huge selection of machinery on display. The New Holland range of tractors alone was worth a look and indeed the Kverneland range on show was huge with many lesser known models on view. A newcomer for example was the Vicon iXter B18 Mounted Sprayer.

VALTRA TRACTORS In recent issues we looked at a little of the history of the company and how they assemble the tractors in their modern factory near Jyvaskyla in southern Finland, but what of the machines themselves?

he brand name is well known but the range itself may still be something of a mystery to many so here we look at what it is they actually produce. The first thing that sets Valtra apart from other manufacturers is that they are designed in a very Nordic sort of way. By that I mean that the company does not see a tractor as just a beast of the field but also of the forest and highway. This strongly reflects the situation in Scandinavian countries where farming will often only be a part of the owners income and so they need a machine that is far more versatile and adaptable than a standard plough based tractor. This need to be multifaceted has led to the feature that Valtra are perhaps most famous for and that is the manufacture of bespoke machines that the customer has had full control in specifying, enabling the end user to create the vehicle that best suits their operation. The two most obvious manifestations of this policy are the choice of cab and the fore end loader options. The cabs come in four basic types, the standard unit we are all familiar with, a low base version, two variations of a high visibility model and a forestry style that is fitted with polycarbonate windows in the roof and bars to give extra protection against falling timber. Add to this choice the option of reverse drive, air suspension, 50kph gearing, nine standard colours (or specify your own) and of course a range of engine sizes within each series and very soon you begin to realise that Valtraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s claim to offer up to half a million combinations may not be as far fetched as it sounds. With the need for tractors to be masters

of all trades in this part of the world it is imperative that they can handle materials as naturally as they can pull implements and so the approach to fitting a fore end loader is not that of simply bolting on a third party product but supplying an item that has been designed to compliment the tractor from the first stages of development. The tractors themselves are also designed to work with the loader which not only includes a lowered bonnet but also a support at the front of the chassis to transfer the force of the bucket straight to the front axle rather than to the mounting brackets on the side of the engine which would otherwise be the case. Increasing the power density of the engines, with four cylinders now doing the work that was once expected of six, has allowed the droop snoot as well as reduced the cost of engine manufacture although the addition of extra components associated with Tier Four emission standards has added considerably to the expense. The ability to multi task is obviously the major brief for the Valtra engineers who appreciate that the Scandinavian tractor has to be a tool fit for the many different jobs carried out on the land. The traditional farm tractor is just that, a tractor built to carry out farm tasks which leaves it somewhat lacking when it comes to forestry work which is the other great, if not greater, activity in rural areas. With a short growing season confined to the four or five months of the brief summer the rest of the year is often devoted to cutting and hauling timber out of the forests, often in the dark and nearly always on rock strewn slopes or bogs. Operating cutting arms and grapples that

are mounted on the three point linkage would be a tiresome task in a conventional tractor so reverse drive, or Twintrac as they call it, is a natural feature rather than something foreign and exotic as it may be regarded in the less extreme conditions of Ireland. Installing a transmission that is as happy in reverse as it is going forwards plus duplication of the major controls at the rear of the cab has produced two machines in one, especially when combined with the forestry cab. Indeed, it is tempting to suggest that a Valtra in this configuration is more a timber harvester capable of ploughing a field than a tractor with the ability to harvest wood, yet the effect is to bring innovation and versatility to other farming operations such as mowing, where reverse drive can be particularly effective in increasing operator comfort and efficiency in turning at the headlands due to the rear wheel steer. And itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just these extra features that place Valtra apart from much of the competition either, for any tractor that can cope with the punishment of working in the Nordic forests is going to be plenty tough enough for the average farm here on the western side of Europe. Not all the options are suitable for all the tractors across the range, forestry cabs for instance are not available for the largest S series as these are unlikely to be used on timber work being rather too large for the woodland environment. Yet they can be fitted to the A, N, and T series tractors which start at 88hp and extend up to 215hp with the S series taking the power available from a Valtra up to 370hp. The company is aware of that large gap between the top

FEATURE end T213 (215hp ) and the lower level S233 (270hp) and with a nod and wink invite us to be patient and await announcements of new models as the year progresses. In Finland and in Finland only Valtra sell directly to the end user although service is provided by appointed dealers rather than the factory. As part of this sales strategy they have a good range of tractors available for test driving at the factory and I was able to take a few of them around the short test course where the various transmissions could be demonstrated on the slopes and any fears about lack of engine braking due to the Vario transmission be put to rest. If you want to stop on a descent simply come off the throttle, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s as easy as that. Equally as impressive was the sort of lugging power from low revs that one has come to expect only from six cylinder engines rather than the four pot blocks which are used in the A and N series tractors. The torque to pull you up a slope at little more than tickover seems to appear from nowhere and the usual complaints about modern electronics making tractors far too complex must be silenced by experiencing the benefits they can bring to the performance of the machine. However, despite all the wizardry and impressive control systems of the bigger beats my heart was stolen by the smallest machine I drove. It was the A93 of just 101hp and with its generous all round vision and gentle nature it was an absolute peach to toodle about in amongst the trees. But what really struck me was the slim lines of its bonnet, reminiscent of one of its ancestors, the BM 10 which was barely a foot in width across its engine. One canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but feel that there is something more to Valtra than this heritage that they are so rightfully proud of, it is a feeling that the tractors are of a place rather than a just another universal farming machine that could come from anywhere in the world. The tractors have a character that is almost organic, a sense of emerging from the land and forests of Scandinaviaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s past and then evolving into the present where they are perhaps quite the most complete machines available to growers anywhere.

laney Agri engineers were approached by numerous farmers to design a machine that addresses the problem of drying grass for better quality silage in short windows of good weather. This all sounds simple, but given our unpredictable weather if cut grass gets rain after tedding the drying process will become more laborious and time consuming. This combined with raking can mean more water and dirt is introduced to the sward. The theory behind the SwathAir machine is that it is better to make the silage higher rather than wider meaning if it rains there is less surface area exposed, going back to the theory of the hay stack. So what’s the problem? Producing high quality silage is now more important than ever given the cost of supplementary feed. Considerable volumes of water are put into silos or bales when unwilted grass is ensiled. This encourages extensive fermentation which is difficult to control and produces excessive effluent taking with it much of the valuable nutrients required for the animals performance, affecting your profit. So how can you make better silage? Further development of the 2014 SwathAir model has further improved air induction. Comments from Blaney Agri’s test group of farmers’ highlights the need to turn swards to dry the damp grass underneath, touching the ground, which has not benefited from the wilting process. An innovative “flick-out” TM rotor is also available which teases apart the longer grass leafs, creating an optimized sward structure for air circulation, enhancing the rate of drying. So when the development engineer Dave Wills at Blaney was asked how is this possible, he stated that ‘By accelerating the centre of the sward, and separating the grass from its parallel mowed position to an alternate pattern introduces more stalk gaps for improved wind drying and less damage caused by unforeseen rain compared to condition spreading. Results have shown 75% less effluent comes from wilted grass using the SwathAir than direct cut silage. Baled silage where the Blaney SwathAir has been used on the sward should result in 28% dry matter (DM)

This will result in up to 30% less bales and greatly reduce unnecessary wrapping costs per hectare.’ So in simple terms, you will get better quality silage in less time, and as you can see from the photograph, better, more compact bales. What makes the Blaney 2014 SwathAir appear to be the best in the market? This does not just appear to be the best but the only machine on the market that can offer an extra sward conditioning process to crack up the ligaments in the stalks and assist in further removal of the grass’ water retaining waxy coating. The unique body, developed through ongoing research and simulation can be adjusted according to the weight of grass to ensure optimum sward rebuild, by breaking up the plugs in the grass and teasing them out. This helps create a sward ideally suited to the baler. The doors has been developed for better sward control, while the wheels are larger lower ground pressure tyres suited to softer ground conditions.

An adjustable angle head-stock moves the position of the sward on the ground after conditioning. This is extremely beneficial when working in wet ground conditions where it is necessary to transfer the grass/straw across onto drier ground. 90% of all baled silage in Ireland is currently harvested by contractors, with little grass being ted. The farmer usually wants the grass left lying for it to dry and then needs it lifted before the next rain shower. But with contractors under increasing pressure to keep everyone happy and get grass baled and wrapped before it rains, this means it’s up to the farmer to make a difference and make the most of his silage crop. Experience shows that consistently good silage results from attention to detail at all stages of silage making – in the field, ensiling and at feed out. In order to highlight the contribution of customers, who worked closely with BKT for the initial testing and launch of AGRIMAX tyre products, a felicitation ceremony was conducted and was moderated by Mr. Sandesh Jain, General Manager (Exports) at BKT. Customers who achieved highest sales of AGRIMAX tyres in the last decade were also commended. Agrigear was awarded special recognition for its input into the development and testing of the Agrimax tyre. Agrigear was the first ever customer of BKT for AGRIMAX radial tyres. The very first batch of Agrimax tyres manufactured by BKT was shipped to Ireland to Agrigear in May 2004. A commemorative plaque was presented to Fred by Rajiv Poddar, Joint Managing Director of BKT. “Fred has been a hands-on professional in the agricultural industry in Ireland/Europe.
