The Bisol family has been producing Prosecco since 1542. Their vineyards are located in Valdobbiadene and Coneglio, the two finest communes in this stunningly beautiful region of north-west Italy. Gianluca Bisol is currently in charge, and he has ensured that standards have remained high, despite the surge in popularity of their wines. Produced entirely from their own vinyards, Bisol is regarded by many as the finest producer in the region. Prosecco offers a completely different range of flavours to Champagne. Some of the very cheap versions can be truly awful. Jeio wines are light and fruity with a purity and elegance that sets them apart. France - Regional Wines Main à Main, IGP d’Oc

The south of France, once known for producing large quantities of inexpensive wine, has changed dramatically over the last two decades. It is now a source of some of the best value wines in the world. The French appellation system is complicated and of little interest to many of today’s wine-drinkers, who are used to buying wine by grape variety. For this reason, Searsons has created a range of single-varietal wines that show the full potential of this region. We source the wines for Main à Main from one of the finest, family-owned, producers in the Languedoc. We believe they offer great value for money for those seeking true French character in an accessible form. Jurançon, one of the lesser-known appellations of France, lies in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains, close to Lourdes. Exposition is all-important here, with the best vineyards lying in ‘cirques,’ semi-circular mountains facing south to gain maximum heat and sun. The best wine is Jurançon, a wonderfully fresh sweet wine, produced from the Petit Manseng grape variety, and made famous by King Henri of Navarre. La Cave de Gan is a co-operative, the largest in Jurançon. We have been buying wine from here for over twenty years, and are delighted that Jurançon is now becoming one of the more fashionable wines in France. France - Beaujolais Domaine du Vissoux, Famille Chermette, Fleurie

ABV

Per Unit

Our kind of people! The Chermette family has been based in ‘Le Vissoux’ in southern Beaujolais since the 17th century. Pierre-Marie Chermette took over in 1982 and began to bottle his own wine and to buy parcels of vines in the Crus villages of northern Beaujolais; Fleurie, Moulin-â-Vent and later Brouilly. In 1990, his wife Martine joined the business, bringing a formidable academic rigour and madcap sense of fun to this artisan enterprise. The team believes in traditional, natural winemaking; indigenous yeasts, little or no chaptalisation, semi-carbonic vinification, and the minimum use of sulphur dioxide. The results are wines that express the different terroirs perfectly, and are brim-full of pure fruits and a wonderful elegance. In a region that so often disappoints, these are real gems. www.chermette.fr Beaujolais, Les Griottes, Domaine du Vissoux 12.0% €11.45 The soils at ‘Le Vissoux’ are granite, quite unlike the clay soils elsewhere in the south of Beaujolais. The wine is a perfect expression of the pure joyful essence of Beaujolais; full of fresh, dark cherry and redcurrant fruits. A revelation.

The granite and manganese soils of Moulin à Vent reveal Gamay as a serious wine, in the right hands. This wine combines a structure and depth of fruit flavour not often seen in the Beaujolais region. There is juicy, meaty, dark-berried fruit and a structured minerality on the long finish.

The Quiot family have been winemakers since 1748. The core of their business is in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where they own over 100 hectares of vines, although they offer wines from many parts of the Rhône, including Ventoux. Domaine Saint Gayan, Famille Meffre, Gigondas

ABV

Per Unit

The Meffre family has been making wine in Gigondas since the 15th century. Their direct ancestor, Pierre Goubert bought this 38 hectare domaine in 1709. It has been run by the family since then. It was traditional to grow both vines and olives in his region, but the Meffres, like many others, concentrated on viticulture following the great frost of 1956, which killed all of their olive trees. In 2007, Jean-Pierre Meffre was joined on the estate by his son-in-law Christian Yves Carré de Lusançay. This is a traditional estate in the best sense, with no irrigation, and everything is done by hand. The wines are powerful and full-bodied with pure ripe fruits; prices remain very modest in comparison to some of their peers. www.saintgayan.com Côtes du Rhône, Domaine St. Gayan 14.0% €9.75 An outstanding wine at a great price. This does not fall into the light, easy-drinking style of Côtes du Rhône. By using grapes from old vines sourced entirely from Côtes du Rhône Villages vineyards, mainly Sablet, this is a full-bodied wine with guts and glory.

Rasteau, Domaine Saint Gayan 14.5% €12.45 Probably the best value wine from this estate. Made with a high proportion of Mourvèdre (27%), this is a punchy, powerful wine with spicy, meaty, ripe fruits. Considerably superior to many a Gigondas.

Azienda Zenato was founded by Sergio Zenato in 1960. Today his children Alberto and Nadia are in charge of the business. The largest vineyard holdings are in Lugana, where they were responsible for the re-birth of the region. However, they also have significant properties in Valpolicella, where they fashion a range of charming, approachable wines that are great ambassadors for a region where price often seems to count for more than quality. The Zenato flagship is Ripassa, but all the wines offer genuine value for money. In 2012 we added Custoza and Bardolino to the range; both are wonderfully fresh, fruity wines. We also introduced two new wines, Pinot Grigio, and Cormì which is made primarily from the local Corvina grape, blended with a small amount of Merlot. Argentina Luigi Bosca & La Linda, Familia Arizu, Mendoza

A ABV

Per Unit

The Arizu family, originally from Spain, first planted vines in 1901, their vineyards are located in seven prime sites in the Vistalba Valley between Maipú and Luján de Cuyo, all above 750m in altitude. In addition to a range of excellent Malbecs, we now offer a range of more esoteric wines, including a Tempranillo and a Torrontés. www.luigibosca.com.ar La Linda Torrontés, Mendoza 13.5% €8.30 Argentina's answer to Sauvignon and indeed, the answer to the yearnings of many - something different, aromatic but not too perfumed, light but not too thin - long and interesting, yet ultimately refreshing.

Luigi Bosca DOC Malbec, Vistalba Vineyard, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza 14.5% €12.95 This old vine Malbec has a wonderful elegance and depth of flavour. Fantastic aromas of cherries and ripe plum with hints of figs and some blackberry. The long spicy finish is sublime.

Luigi Bosca Gala I (Malbec, Petit Verdot, Tannat), Mendoza 14.5% €16.45 The Hard-Man. Carefully-selected Malbec, Petit Verdot and Tannat, blended into a heart-melting, stern yet gentle mouthful of ineffable character.

New Zealand Hunky Dory, Allan Family, Marlborough

ABV

Per Unit

The Allan Family recently launched a winery venture to produce smart, everyday Sauvignon with a distinctly casual feel. They source most of the grapes from two organic or sustainable-farmed sites near to their own vineyards. Their winemaking and attention to detail is reassuringly rigorous; the wine is outstanding value. Hunky Dory, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Fresh, racy, green apple fruits, with lovely citrus notes. Finishes dry and distinctly moreish.

Husband and wife team Mike and Claire Allan met at winemaking college. Having worked for some of New Zealand’s leading wineries, they bought some land in Marlborough in 1990, and produced their first wine in 1996. We have been buying their wine since their first release. In recent years, they became interested in organics and now biodynamics. They have been certified fully organic since 2011, and hope to receive biodynamic status shortly. This is a lovely couple making subtle, balanced wines that improve with each glass. www.huia.net.nz €12.05 Huia Vineyards, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 13.0% One of the best. This stunning Sauvignon is made from selected sites high up in the Wairau Valley. The cooler micro-climate intensifies the palate's citrus crispness and showcases its fresh passionfruit and melon flavours. Not as in-your-face as others, with an underlying subtle complexity.

Huia Vineyards, Marlborough Pinot Gris 14.0% €12.05 Very fulsome yet nervy, with ripe pear and orange peel, and an incredible layered palate characterised by nuts and spices. Lip-smacking.

Huia Vineyards, Marlborough Pinot Noir 13.5% €17.05 Deep, concentrated Pinot fruit, with plenty of structure and depth. Outclasses any Burgundy in this price bracket.

AloisKracher was one of the world’s great winemakers; a visionary who created a new style of sweet wine in Austria, based on fruit, finesse and balance. He insisted on vinifying individual vineyards separately, giving each wine an individual character. His wines became cult classics, loved by critics and wine-drinkers worldwide. Now his son Gerhard, who had been working with Alois since 2001, has seamlessly taken on the mantle. www.kracher.at Half
