However, for those areas with more than one season, your skin may need some help combatting the elements. During winter the air becomes much dryer, winds increase, and there’s regular chances of rain, snow, etc.

You may start to experience increased dryness in your skin during this time of the year. The weather can cause our skin to become so dry in cracks and becomes sore. Some of the places on our bodies that seem to dry out the most are elbows, knees and knuckles.

Well, in harsh weather water is pulled out of the skin and is consumed by the dehumidified wind.

Rapidly changing temperatures can also irritate the skin such as leaving the warm house to go out into the snow. Taking hot showers during the winter is also not recommended as it dries the skin. And all though a heater keeps you toasty it can dry the air in your room which again translates to dry skin.

As mentioned, the areas you may find drier than others are your elbows, knees, and knuckles. This is because the skin is always bending and stretching and needs special care.

When it comes to knuckles, our skin can be very sensitive to many household products. Ingredients in cleaning supplies can remove our natural oils from our skin. If you have dry or cracked skin on your hands it is important to use gloves when cleaning around the house to not cause further harm to the healing wounds.

Also, the material of sweaters and long sleeve shirts can rub against the elbow causing irritation to already dry skin. Make sure to moisturize completely before putting on clothing to prevent chafing.

So what are some ways you can prevent these horrors when winter comes around?

You can stay hydrated, drink water regularly.

Change your face wash to something that is mild and gentle on your skin. You want something that can seal in moisture.

You can switch your moisturizer from light too thick because summer is over and your skin will need extra emollients.
