FISHING LICENSES
Too much of the time we hear about bodies of water or fish species that are experiencing problems. It’s good that we learn about those problems because if we don’t know about them, we can’t fix them. We’re often hearing about the water being too dirty or too clear, the fish being too big or too small. It’s good to hear about bodies of water and fish populations that are recovering or have recovered. I was on one of those success-story lakes recently. I joined a couple of local anglers on Clear Lake on a chilly, blustery day when the fish shouldn’t have been biting too good, but they were. We caught plenty of eating-sized walleyes and some that were too big to eat. We caught yellow bass that were perfect for the fry pan, and we caught a bunch of nice crappies. All that action in half a day, from a lake that 20 years ago was a bullhead lake with questionable water quality. Today, Clear Lake is one of the premier fisheries in the Midwest for walleyes and muskies, with a bunch of upand-coming classes of crappies, perch and other species. Let’s check out Clear Lake.

Kevan Paul is a fishing guide on Clear Lake; Bill Bunn is a long-time Clear Lake resident and angler. They were my hosts on this trip. We started fishing a wind-protected shoreline and caught a couple small walleyes. We realized that if we wanted to have more action, we would need to fish some wind-blown areas, so we did. And the action picked up right away. We set out a spread of slip-bobbers tipped with jigs and leeches or crawlers. While those rigs floated up the ledge from deeper to shallower water, we made short casts with 1/16-ounce jigs. The walleyes didn’t show a preference: We caught’em with jigs and we caught ’em under the bobbers. Nice walleyes! Plenty of 15- to 20-inchers with some shorter ones in the mix also, which bodes well for the future of Clear Lake.
We then moved into shallow water and used 13-foot rods with a 2-foot section of line and a tiny Fire-Fly jig attached to it. We dipped this offering in pockets in the reeds and caught crappies up to 12 inches and some really nice bluegills. Years ago, these species weren’t present in Clear Lake. Now they’re there, and the population is going to get only better if anglers allow them to. We’ve got to release the majority of those crappies. Eat the yellow bass that are caught right along with the crappies. Several factors enabled Clear Lake to rebound so notably. The water coming in is much cleaner now due to a rejuvenated marsh that feeds the lake. Other water coming in is also cleaner.
Fishing guide Kevan Paul uses his skills to net a walleye in Clear Lake.
“I think, though, it’s the yellow bass that bring anglers to Clear Lake in the winter,” says Bob Jensen. “The action can be non-stop, and yellow bass are wonderful on the table.” Here, fishing guide Chris Scholl with a catfish he pulled from the ice. Scholl and partner Kevan Paul organize Iowa’s Largest Ice Fishing Tournament, the Yellow Bass Bonanza. Additionally, the west end of the lake was dredged a few years ago, creating an entirely new environment. The west end 20 years ago was a bowl 4 feet deep and covered with mud. It’s now a diverse ecosystem with depths to 25 feet and lots of structure. Vegetation is growing in the deeper water and provides lots of habitat. Clear Lake is a true success story that was created by lots of folks — professional and volunteers. Clear Lake is an example that we can create outstanding fishing and other water-related opportunities when the desire is there. And, for most of us, the desire is there. Gone are the days of visits to Grandma and Grandpa’s house — the new family get-together involves active getaways. And there is no better large-group activity than camping. Camping offers the best variety of everything — lodging, activities, even dining! And the best part about camping is that it is affordable. Whether you borrow your neighbor’s tent, own or rent an RV, or really splurge on a camping cabin, there is an option to fit every budget. McIntosh Woods State Park near Clear Lake is a perfect destination for a family looking for a variety of lodging and activities. The park has two 16-foot yurts — circular tent structures fitted with a full-size futon bed and a set of bunk beds. Nearby is the main campground with electric and non-electric campsites, perfect for parking the RV or pitching a tent. It’s nearly impossible to be bored on a camping trip — especially in a place so filled with history and activity as Clear Lake! You’ll have your choice of lake-side fun at the campground like swimming, fishing and hiking. Gather everyone together and spend the afternoon on a a boat. You can rent one at Clear Lake Boats, or board the Lady of the Lake, a gorgeous paddlewheel offering daily cruises. One of the best parts of a vacation is dining — and camping is no exception. Camping food can be as simple or as elaborate as you wish. From sandwiches to plank-grilled salmon, bagged chips to foil-roasted potatoes, there is no limit on what you can create, if you want to cook at all. With the incredible variety of restaurants in Clear Lake, you may find that the only thing you want to cook over the fire is S’mores. Unlike a hotel or resort, camping offers a vacation where families don’t have to work hard to “get their money’s worth.” Kids can run from cabin to camper to playground freely while adults gather around the fire sharing stories, plans and dreams while achieving true vacation bliss — relaxation. A multigenerational camping trip also offers something you may not often have so nearby — babysitters. Yes, a large family vacation is the perfect time to plan date nights. With so many people

A projector and camper make a fun outdoor movie experience. gathered, a couple of parents can take each night “off” to enjoy — adults only. Maybe a romantic lake cruise, followed by dinner downtown, then a little dancing at the Surf Ballroom? A well-planned multigenerational camping vacation is affordable, active and interesting for everyone involved — no matter their ages. Ready to plan your family’s camping adventure? Handy tips: • Check your bedding. An inexpensive “egg crate” mattress cover can make a thin mattress or air mattress much more comfortable. • Bring outdoor lighting. Solar-powered ground stakes are easy and inexpensive, or make your items multi-task and attach a head lamp to a full one gallon jug of water. • Be sure to let everyone know how meals will work. Will everyone gather together but bring food for their own families? Or will you assign a main dish to a different family group each night, with everyone else bringing side dishes? Advance planning saves time and money — it also stops assumptions. • Bring cards and easy-to-transport games… just in case it rains. • Don’t forget bikes and scooters for the kids. • Most importantly, pack a comfy camping chair — preferably one that reclines — to truly enjoy your relaxing vacation. Jody Halsted is an Iowa native and avid camper. She and her husband Doug have experienced all aspects of camping: from hiking in minimalism before they had kids and car camping with tents and sleeping bags to small camper and finally luxury RV camping. An authority on family travel, Jody publishes www.FamilyRambling.com, a website dedicated to living life… upgraded. She is also a regular contributor to MiniTime Trip Tips and The Scenic Route at www.GoRVing.com. www.clearlakeiowa.com
TIPS FOR THE CAMPING NEWBIE So you’re ready to do it. Really jump in and do it right. You’re ready to take your family camping. Congratulations! Camping is an incredible family activity filled with fresh air, exciting explorations, outdoor cooking and (kids’ favorites) dirt, sticks and rocks. It’s an adventure designed to bring your family closer together and leave you planning your next outing. Now, first things first: Where will you sleep? If your answer is a tent, be sure to do your research before purchasing. Consider a visit to Kramer Ace Hardware in Clear Lake where the camping experts can help you choose the perfect tent for your family. Maybe you would prefer to “glamp?” Book a camping cabin or rent a camper or RV for the weekend. Tip: Try www.RVshare.com for locally and privately owned RV rentals at affordable prices. Now that you know where you’re sleeping, it’s time to get ready. How to pack for camping: Forget suitcases — use Rubbermaid-type containers. The reasons are simple: • They hold a lot. • They are waterproof so you can leave the crates with utensils, plates, etc., outside. • Most woodland creatures can’t get into them. • They stack nicely. • You really don’t want to drag your luggage around in the dirt. Sleeping at your campsite: Kids will love “roughing it” on the ground, but a word of advice for adults: that’s only fun if you’re younger than 13. Invest in an inflatable mattress. And make sure it has an air pump — either battery powered or electric — you don’t want to try to blow one up! Bring more blankets than you think you’ll need (use Space Bags to fit them into one of the plastic containers). Bring one for under the kids’ sleeping bags, just for a bit more cushion from sticks and rocks on the ground. For the air mattress, you’ll want three blankets: one to protect it from sticks and rocks on the ground, another to go on top of the mattress (below the sheet — plastic gets cold) and the third to cover yourself. It can get cold at night! If you have napping toddlers, spend more for an electric campsite and bring a fan. Tents can get hot and muggy in the afternoon, and the bit of breeze even a small fan creates can mean the difference between naptime and a cranky child. www.clearlakeiowa.com
Your new favorite campfire treat: S’maco It’s more than a s’more….. Gather Aluminum foil, flour tortilla, marshmallows, chocolate chips and any other topping you want (peanut butter, crispy bacon, honey, shredded coconut) Create Place your tortilla on a square of foil and build your treat. If using peanut butter or honey, apply first. Layer on the goodies! Fold Fold the tortilla around the filling, then the foil around the tortilla. Heat Place in the embers of the fire (or on a hot grill) for 5-10 minutes, turning at least once. Enjoy Carefully remove smaco from heat. Let it cool (if you can!). Unwrap and enjoy the melty deliciousness!
Glamping? Be sure to ask if bedding is provided. Usually you will be supplying your own. Let the kids use sleeping bags — it’s just easy! What to wear camping: Bring two sets of clothes per day, per kid. If you don’t use them, great. But kids play in dirt, sand and water when camping, and it’s nice to be able to get them clean-ish. Pack each outfit in its own Ziploctype baggie to keep everything together, organized and create space in your packing containers. Bring warm pajamas and socks — it can get chilly at night! If you plan to hike, bring jeans, longsleeve shirts and hats to protect yourself from scratches, ticks and other woodland creepy crawlies. Don’t forget a first aid kit for any cuts and scrapes, and an inexpensive camping clothesline could come in handy for drying wet clothes. What to eat when you go camping: Follow the KISS rule: Keep It Simple Sweetie. Don’t feel like you have to cook a gourmet meal. Many campsites offer a heavy grill or fire pit, so bring easy-to-grill foods — hot dogs, brats and burgers. To cook chicken and veggies, cut them into small pieces and wrap in foil with some spices and a few drops of water. Cook over flames or in hot embers. You can even make a baked potato or corn on the cob this
Photo by Jody Halsted way. If you plan to cook over fire — maybe a breakfast of eggs or pancakes — invest in a solid cast iron skillet. Just don’t forget to bring oil for cooking! The beauty of cast iron is that it doesn’t need to be washed. Just scrape it out, maybe add water to cook out anything that is stuck, oil it and it’s ready to use again. And don’t forget the supplies for S’mores or S’macos! You’re not camping until you’ve had at least one gooey, fire-toasted dessert. Don’t forget dish soap and a rag — you may have a few things to wash. Use one of the plastic containers as a wash tub. What to do when you go camping: Sure, you can plan a few things. Maybe stories around the campfire at night or a bit of touring the local area. But the true beauty of camping is the freedom to just enjoy where you are and explore what surrounds you. Let the kids draw in the dirt with sticks or build fairy houses at the base of trees with leaves, bark and wild flowers. Fill a couple water bottles and pack a few snacks before setting out on a hike through wooded trails. Splash through creeks or go fishing. Let nature be your guide. There is a reason for the phrase “Happy Camper.” Camping is a family vacation like no other. It will bring your family closer than you imagined and create memories that will be shared around future campfires far into the future. Happy camping!

INSTAGRAM LIKE A PRO Instagram is a wonderful social media platform on many different levels. It’s a community that connects the visually creative by sharing beautiful pictures and finding new connections through hashtags. The features that Instagram has can make anyone look like a professional photographer! What makes Instagram one of the most popular social media platforms is that it’s very easy to use, and you can share your Instagram photos on other social media accounts as soon as your picture is posted. There have been many business owners who have found success and now have built their businesses around Instagram. Here’s how you can get started and Instagram like a pro. Find a unique perspective. Use your eyes before you use your phone or camera to envision a frame around your subject and visualize what angle would work best. Then take your phone out and start capturing. Use the rule of thirds. Just like in all the other aspects of photography, the rule of thirds still applies here. This will help you create a point of interest in your photos. If you have an iPhone, go to Settings, select Photos & Camera, and slide the Grid feature on. Be consistent in what and how you’re posting. Find three or four of your favorite filters and stick to them for consistency in your profile. When people find you, they like to quickly gauge whether or not they want to follow you. Keeping things consistent will help them decide if they have an interest in the photos you like to post. If you are photographing food, take a few photos from many different angles and don’t forget the rule of thirds. Photographing food from above is always a favorite.
Adjust the lighting before adding a filter. Use natural lighting whenever possible. There are many great apps that you can use to adjust lighting. My favorites are Snapseed and Aviary; these apps will save your edited photos to your phone’s library and then you can open them in your Instagram app. Add a lens to your phone. For less than $100, you can get two different lenses that attach to your phone for professional-looking photographs. My favorite is the Ollo Clip 4-in-1 lens from Amazon. Have a theme for your account. Maybe you only want to feature pictures of neat architecture you find, or only feature pictures of your dog. If you have a logo, use an app such as iwatermark to add your logo to your photos. This makes your brand more recognizable and always in front of your followers. Get close. Being close to your subject can create intimacy and emotion in your pictures. Think quality over quantity. Exceptional pictures will prompt your followers to engage. This creates community and, in the end, creates more followers. Remember, practice makes perfect. Sharing beautiful photos and glimpses into your world is what Instagram is all about. Share the beauty in your life and appreciate the same beauty in others. Alicia Schmitt is a freelance writer and photographer from north central Iowa. Neighborhood block party meets street fair Growing up, I loved when our small neighborhood would get together on holidays and have a block party. We would each bring a dish, and there would be music playing. Sometimes we’d just plan one on a weekend that didn’t have a holiday because they were so much fun. Clear Lake’s Thursdays on Main remind me of that sense of community. They’re so much more than a neighborhood block party, though. In fact, it’s more like a neighborhood block party meets street fair! It’s a great way to start off your weekend a little early. Thursdays on Main run for 11 weeks in 2016, and they have so many various activities. There are things to do for both the young and old. I’ve been on several Thursdays with friends, and we always find something new. The event was created so that local shops downtown could stay open late, and they do. You can walk up and down the sidewalk to check out the local shops. There’s also Open Air Vendors and a Farmers Market. You can find gifts for yourself and others, as well as things you didn’t even know you needed but must have. I absolutely love supporting our local vendors. The local restaurants are open for business, too, as well as numerous food trucks. The food trucks serve bbq, steak sandwiches, nachos, ice cream, Maid-Rites, burgers, dogs and more! There’s something good to eat everywhere you turn. Just past the markets and food trucks, you can find tons of cool classic cars. They’re out on display, and you can even talk to the folks who own them. It’s like having an antique car show every week. There’s even entertainment provided as you walk up and down Main Street. Every week is different, and it’s all local entertainment — singers, dance troupes, bands, karate and more. It’s fun to see the kids get involved as performers and spectators. Some of the locals bring their chairs to watch the bands, and you can see little ones dancing the night away. In the picturesque park on Main Street, they have all sorts of activities for kids such as laser tag, bounce houses, balloons and more. There are even Main Street Trolley Rides and Kiddie Train Rides. It’s a full-scale street festival every week! Then to top off the whole evening, they end the night with a movie in the park under the stars at the bandshell. Families bring chairs and blankets, and they watch a movie together. All the movies are family friendly. If you’re in Clear Lake, you simply must check out Thursdays on Main!

This annual event offers an opportunity to stroll down a vibrant main street while enjoying wine samplings, seminars and artist demonstrations, shopping, fall decor and live music at several locations. Our expanded Farmers Market section explodes with all the offerings that fall harvest brings: big, bushy mums, fresh-picked produce, pumpkins, gourds and squash. Buy some crispy, chewy bread, gooey rolls, gourmet cupcakes and other homemade goodies to snack on while you browse (be sure to get some to take home, too). Craft vendors offer handmade decorative items and jewelry made from various mediums: wood, ceramic, metal, leather — and there is even a blacksmith hard at work in the park! Be sure to head indoors, too, as our retailers have their stores brimming with exciting fall products. Climb aboard the Main Street Trolley for a fall colors tour and experience nature while touring the town in a vintage rubber-wheel trolley. Be sure to sample and vote for your favorite salsa and participate in or watch the other fun contests like the popular grape stomp, pumpkin relay and waiter race! CLEAR LAKE: WHERE Iowa resort town draws visitors to beaches and ballroom
By Katherine Rodeghier The goofy glasses got to me. Oversized, coal-black frames fastened to a fencepost along a dusty, gravel road in northern Iowa seemed funny and sad at the same time. Funny because their cartoonish outline felt so out of place on the edge of a cornfield. Sad because they marked the entrance to the site of a fatal plane crash on a fateful winter night in 1959. Clear Lake, Iowa, has a reputation for two things: 1) The lake, Iowa’s third largest, measures more than 7 miles by 2.5 miles with two state parks, beaches, campgrounds and excursions on a paddle wheeler. 2) The place where the music died, so says Don McLean in “American Pie.” The hit song references the death of rock ’n’ roll greats Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson following their performance on Feb. 2, 1959, at Clear Lake’s Surf Ballroom. The dance hall still stands, and music blasts from the stage in a couple of concerts a month. It stays true to its original ocean beach club décor of palm trees, blue sky and crashing waves. The cloud machine still works — sometimes.
A living museum of music Designated a landmark by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Surf was among the first of the big-band ballrooms to embrace rock ’n’ roll in the ’50s with appearances by the Everly Brothers, Little Richard, Roy Orbison and Ricky Nelson. Elvis, however, never entered the building. In addition to evening concerts, the Surf Ballroom & Museum opens during the day for fans who want to see its Wall of Fame with rock star memorabilia and the original 50-by-90-foot maple dance floor flanked by rows of vintage six-person booths. Visitors lovingly walk up to the stage and the payphone Holly used to call his wife on the night he died. In the graffiti-covered Green Room, “American Pie” lyrics scrawled on the wall have been signed by McLean himself. As the song goes, the loss of those three artists left a hole in the soul of rock ’n’ roll. The three, along with Dion and the Belmonts, Frankie Sardo, Waylon Jennings, Tommy Allsup and Carl Bunch, were on a 24-day tour of the Midwest called Winter Dance Party. It had been one of the Midwest’s worst winters and the heat on their tour bus had failed. Holly had had enough of the cold, so he chartered a small plane to take him and bandmates Jennings and Allsup to Fargo, North Dakota, their next stop. But Valens said he’d never flown on a small plane, so he asked Allsup for his seat. They flipped a coin, and Valens won the toss. Richardson had the flu, so Jennings gave him his seat. When Holly heard about the switch, he poked fun at Jennings, saying

he hoped his bus would freeze up. Jennings continued the ribbing, saying he hoped Holly’s plane would crash, a flippant remark he has said haunts him.
Memorial in a cornfield The plane took off from the Mason City Municipal Airport that stormy night and crashed less than six miles away in a field north of Clear Lake. Debris scattered more than 300 yards. All three, and pilot Roger Peterson, were ejected and died instantly. The crash site, now the Memorial Site, remains on private property, but signs point the way. Holly’s signature glasses show visitors where to get out and walk nearly half a mile along a barbedwire fence to the memorial where an inscribed stainless-steel guitar and three stainless-steel records stand on the spot where the plane came to rest. Visitors leave trinkets and coins, some in foreign currency. Three glass angels, each with a solar cell, light up at night. A kooky wind turbine made from Jell-O molds spins in the breeze. In 1979, a Buddy Holly tribute concert at the Surf Ballroom marked the 20th anniversary of the crash. It evolved into the Winter Dance Party now held every year on a weekend close to the anniversary. What began as a one-night concert has morphed into a four-night party that brings up to 3,200 people out into the cold of northern Iowa, including a large contingent from England, where Holly was especially popular. Tickets go on sale in October.
Clear Lake’s resort roots Iowa once had more ballrooms per capita than any other state, and the Surf is among the few that remain. The first Surf opened www.clearlakeiowa.com
THE MUSIC DOESN’T DIE in this resort town in1933 and burned down in 1947. The current ballroom rose the next year across the street featuring performances by bands led by Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Lawrence Welk. Clear Lake had its beginnings as a lake resort back in the 19th century and was on the Chautauqua circuit until 1913. Evangelist Billy Sunday and temperance activist Carrie Nation spoke here, along with William Jennings Bryant and Booker T. Washington. In the ’20s and ’30s, bootleg liquor flowed in supper clubs, dance halls and a casino. Now the town is “the Hamptons of Mason City,” jokes Tim Coffey, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce. Halfway between Des Moines
and Minneapolis, the town of less than 8,000 residents swells to 17,000 in summer. About 70 percent of its housing is owned by nonresidents. Visitors ride the Lady of the Lake paddle wheeler and frequent three beaches. Clear Lake City Beach is near downtown, Clear Lake State Park has a 900-foot sandy beach on its 55 acres, and McIntosh Woods State Park has an unsupervised beach on a peninsula that juts into the lake. On hot summer days, picnickers fill parks and campgrounds and sun lovers sprawl on the sand, a radio or smartphone playing tunes of today and days gone by, proof that the music memorialized here hasn’t died.
During her career as a travel writer, Katherine Rodeghier has visited nearly 90 countries and 48 U.S. states and has taken cruises across the globe. She resides in suburban Chicago where her travel journalism career began writing and editing an award-winning newspaper travel section. Having given up the editor’s chair for a career as an independent travel journalist, she now writes for newspapers, magazines and websites.

LADY OF THE LAKE Cruising is a labor of love on Clear Lake
Operating the Lady of the Lake boat cruise is truly a labor of love for one-half of the ownership team. Scott and Niki Monson had their first date on the boat, where Scott has been a longtime pilot. The Monsons, along with Jon Berhow, bought the cruise business earlier this year. Berhow also owns The Anchor Inn restaurant and bar. We had the pleasure of getting aboard the first official cruise of the 2015 summer season. It should have been the second launch, but Mother Nature played her tricks and created a windy, choppy lake during the afternoon. Fortunately, the wind died down and away we went. The 90-minute tour takes you along the shoreline. Scott relayed a few interesting tidbits along the way. Clear Lake once was home to a casino. During prohibition, the owner would have the alcohol taken down to the lake when inspectors were due on site. Following the visit, the booze was returned to the casino. The Lady of the Lake cruise has been around since 1987, when the then-owner bought the boat and transformed it from a ferry-boat to a cruise boat. The ferry-boat had operated on the Missouri River for a number of years. Scott seems like a natural in the pilot house. He carries the role of captain well. The boat can hold up to 150 people. We had about 20 people on our cruise. It’s a great family activity. Also, it’s a chance to get on the water for someone like me, who isn’t really a boat person. Clear Lake is home to the longest boat dock in Iowa, Scott said. As we moved along the shoreline, the Monsons’ son Cole, took in the view. This kid was hilarious. He was very serious about fulfilling his work assignments, but he also showed his kid side, taking in the beauty of his lake. Clear Lake was formed about 14,000 years ago from glaciers, Scott said. It’s become a great location for fishing. We saw several boats gathered in the middle of the water. Apparently, that spot is known for catching some of the best fish in the area. A couple of guys waded into the lake to do some fishing near home. We passed along the beach at Clear Lake State Park. The park is home to a lodge that was built in the 1930s during the Depression. The cruise gave us some beautiful views of the water. It also impresses me how the water looks when you’re on it. The lake looks like it stretches for Photo by The Walking Tourists miles and miles. More people than just boaters and us took in the fun of the lake. Some folks on a The Lady of the Lake seems to be a popular attraction. watercraft People waved as we floated along. Some kids even were also made up a sign recognizing the boat.

Feel the fresh air on your face, sway to the beach tunes on the speaker and relax into the lake lifestyle! enjoying themselves. After enjoying half the cruise on the open-air deck, we moved to the main deck. The windows open, allowing for a great view of the water. We also grabbed a couple of drinks at the bar. Niki managed the bar during our cruise. So, the entire operation was truly a family affair. Drinks and snacks are reasonably priced. The Lady of the Lake can be booked for parties, in addition to the public cruises. Check out the website for more information. They also offer a July 4th fireworks cruise (which would be cool). We’ve been told the city swells from about 7,000 to about 100,000. A children’s pirate party is offered dockside. We had a great time on our cruise. We strongly recommend checking out the Lady of the Lake for a cruise. Please remember that lake conditions can affect a cruise’s schedule. The cruise line doesn’t accept credit or debit cards. Cash only for the $14 adult ticket and $6 for children 3-12. Kids under two are free. An ATM is nearby. For more information on the cruise or the boat, visit www.cruiseclearlake.com. GOT HISTORY? Clear Lake does!
Clear Lake has a rich past that will delight the interests of a history buff or an avid student of history. The Clear Lake Historical Society is a nonprofit organization founded with the purpose of preserving and interpreting our community’s rich heritage. Letters and diaries relating to the life of the pioneers, early settlers and distinguished citizens are made available. Historical valuable photographs are preserved and accessible for the public to see. Newspaper, cemetery and school archives are kept for future reference. Help is given to citizens, churches and other groups, which are interested in preserving their archives. All of this is done with the aim to promote and preserve a vital interest in Clear Lake’s local history. Local members of the community and those who have an avid interest in the history of Clear Lake make up the core of people who keep the society active; studying everything from cemetery records to Buddy Holly to Civil War links to the Chautauqua and many topics in between. Clear Lake was called the “Saratoga of the West” during the late 19th century and for good reason; there is much to discover about Clear Lake from its beginning in 1851. Its resort atmosphere and small-town feel make it truly a treasure in north Iowa. The society maintains two locations; the primary depository can be found at the Clear Lake Public Library at 200 N. Fourth St. Hours of operation for the History Room are 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. NATURAL BEAUTY NATURE AREAS The Nature Conservancy’s Clausen’s Cove — In January 2008, Max Clausen of Clear Lake donated his 249 acres of land, including undeveloped lake shoreline, oak savannas and farmland to The Nature Conservancy to protect Clear Lake’s water quality and resources while preserving the scenic open space for the community. The Nature Conservancy permits passive use of the property including anchoring boats, swimming, hiking, bird watching, natural resource interpretation, environmental education, scientific research and scenic enjoyment. There will be a staged restoration of the agricultural farmland to native plant communities. Woodford-Ashland Lone Tree Point Nature Area and Sisters’ Prairie — This privately owned area includes a total of 291 acres of woodlands, wetlands, restored prairie and a mile of wild and scenic shoreline. The Nature Area provides habitat for bald eagles, owls, herons, wild turkeys, whitetail deer, red fox and a plethora of birds. Wildflowers carpet the woodlands in the spring. Owners are restoring an oak savanna on the west side of the property. The owners placed conservation easements on the properties to ensure they can never be developed. In 1992, the family donated the easement for the nature area to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. Owners continue to maintain and manage the area, and it remains on the tax rolls, but public access is allowed for non-consumptive uses such as bird watching, hiking, cross country skiing, wildlife observation and photography. Visitors are asked to take litter with them, stay on footpaths and observe prohibited uses of campfires, hunting/trapping and motorized vehicles so the natural integrity of the area will be maintained. In 2003, work began on the Sisters’ Prairie restoration project of over 190 acres. The wetlands and prairie habitat have a significant impact on lake water quality by filtering nutrients and sedimentation from surrounding farmland. It also provides excellent wildlife habitat. The family worked with the Cerro Gordo County office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service to ensure permanent protection as a Wetland Restoration Project. The family donated an easement to the Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board for a 1.1 mile bike trail, which meanders through the prairie. The farm and the prairie continue to be privately owned, so bicyclists and hikers are asked to stay on the trail. Cerro Gordo Wind Farm — 10586 Balsam Ave. An educational kiosk explains how wind is harvested as a sustainable energy source in North Iowa. Hoffman Prairie — At the intersection of Balsam Avenue and Highway 18 (north of the McIntosh Wildlife Area). The 37-acre example of a wet, tallgrass prairie is dotted with beautiful wildflowers in the spring and home to 150 plant species and rare butterflies. The Nature Conservancy purchased it from Larry Hoffman in 1985 and it was dedicated as a biological and geological preserve in 1986. Clear Lake Area Outdoor Classroom — 901 S. Fourth St. People of all ages can enjoy this accessible 2 ½-acre learning center adjacent to Clear Creek Elementary School. Pathways lead through prairie, woodlands and wetland areas. Here is the place to view the majestic trumpeter swans in the spring, summer and autumn. Birdhouses, bat and butterfly houses add to the attractions as well as a hibernaculum for reptiles. Ventura Cove — One of the last undeveloped lake shorelines and 26 acres of woodlands and wetlands was preserved in July 2006,
thanks to a partnership between private and public donors, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. A massive cleanup was done by volunteers and the cities of Clear Lake and Ventura and CL Tel. The INHF provided an easement to the Cerro Gordo Recreational Trails Association which raised money to construct a scenic bike trail through the woodlands. After the $1.7 million was raised, the property was transferred to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Wild turkeys, bald eagles and deer can often be seen here. Woodford Island — Scenic Woodford Island is a 3-acre island managed primarily for wildlife habitat and is an excellent spot for fishing. Bluebill Wildlife Area — A 62-acre parcel purchased from the Ia. Dept. of Transportation in 2002, this area features a 40-acre “borrow” lake stocked for fishing. Acquisition was financed by a private contribution (Rita and Al Goranson), a grant from the Ia. Dept. of Natural Resources “Fish Habitat Stamp program” (35 percent of total cost) and Cerro Gordo County Conservation “REAP” and land acquisition account funds. Located on the east side of Indigo Avenue, southeast of Clear Lake. Lon Whitney Wildlife Sanctuary — Junction of Lee and Bayside, Clear Lake. This unique woodlot was donated by the estate of Lon Whitney and is managed as an urban wildlife area. Winter Garden Park — 1220 N. 16th St. W. A thick layer of peat moss shows this 70-acre area was once a glacial lake-bed, deep beneath the waters of Clear Lake. It is a popular sledding area and provides hikers panoramic views of the Grant Wood-like Iowa landscape to the north. Zirbel Slough — 8447 200th St. This 330-acre example of the prairie marshes that once dotted the country provides habitat for a tremendous variety of waterfowl, wading birds and other wildlife. DNR Aquarium — Iowa Department of Natural Resources, 1203 N. Shore Drive. Get up close and personal with fish from Clear Lake. Open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from mid to late April (depending on the lake ice-out date) until Oct. 15. DNR staff catch the fish for the display each spring and release them before the lake freezes over. Call 357-3517 for more information.

PRAISE & WORSHIP When we finally found the Guardian Angel Roadside Chapel tucked into the woods along South 24th Street in Clear Lake, after we’d asked for directions and still drove by the unmarked landmark, we met Scott Kennedy. He was there with his nephew, an Iowa State University student from the western U.S., cleaning the chapel and grounds for a funeral the next day. It’s difficult to envision a funeral inside this miniscule place of only a few short pews. But one was planned and the mess from an invading squirrel needed to be swept and gathered into garbage bags. Although I did not see it, my husband spotted the succumbed squirrel. I was more focused on the chapel interior with its beautiful center stained glass cross crafted by a local artist and side stained glass windows salvaged from Zion Lutheran Church. The cross was designed to attract the attention of travelers along nearby Interstate 35. This truly is a functional church with altar, organ and baptismal font. I was especially delighted to find my favorite Bible verse — the scripture that has guided me through some rough patches in life — inscribed on a dedication plaque inside the entry: We know that in all things God works for good with those who love him. — Romans 8:28. Serendipitous? Perhaps. But more likely divine. It is the divine intervention of God that led Scott and others to construct the Guardian Angel Roadside Chapel in 1991 in honor of Scott’s aunt, Marguerite Williams. She was convinced that God protected her from kidnapping by a band of gypsies while growing up in Clear Lake. And later, while working at a Chicago medical clinic, Marguerite again experienced God’s protection when she encountered a gang of hoodlums. It was hoodlums, or more accurately criminals, who set fire to
