Local & fresh dominate the food scene in Clear Lake

For a town of 8,000 people, Clear Lake’s dining scene might surprise you. The farmers market is vibrant, and a wide variety independent restaurants offer every breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus everything in between. Located minutes from I-35, Clear Lake is also the perfect stop for travelers moving between Iowa and Minnesota. Even though we have since moved from north Iowa, we look back fondly on our visits to Clear Lake and love recommending our favorite food experiences to the many people who still ask us for recommendations.
ThE LAnDIng: Drive (or boat) to Clear Lake’s popular lake-side restaurant for lunch, dinner or a full breakfast and brunch. The menu offers items like burgers, kabobs, and tacos, all served in shiny metal baskets lined with newspaper. The sweet potato fries are some of the best in town. We like to wash it all down with a cold Moscow Mule on weekends as live music plays and the sun sets on the dock.
hALF MOOn Inn: Inside this simple, low-key building is one of north Iowa’s best, old-school supper clubs. The booths are comfortable, and the inside is dimly lit. We loved how our meals began with a cracker basket, and fresh bread, as well. In true north Iowa-style, Half Moon serves juicy steaks as rare or as well-done as you’d like. We especially enjoyed how the steaks swam in a pool of flavorful marinade. ThE BArrEL DrIvE-In: It’s impossible to miss this historic drive-in along U.S. 18. The sight of Cooper the Giant Chicken and a spinning barrel will tell you where to turn. Since 1958, The Barrel’s been serving crispy broasted chicken, salads with their famous French dressing, and icy mugs of root beer. When I visit, I like to order all three.
STArBOArD MArkET: This lunch-only, nautically-themed sandwich shop is famous for good reason. The sandwiches are really, really good. You’ll find classic sandwiches like the Reuben and creative combinations. I like the Regata, which combines smoked turkey, Havarti and mango chutney. Boxed lunches let you add a fresh deli salads and cookie, too. One unique item I really enjoy is their cornbread salad. The restaurant is popular, and seating is limited. If the weather is nice or the seating is full, simply walk one block away and enjoy your meal by the lake. Gluten-free options are available.
LOuIE’S CuSTOM MEATS: Pack a cooler and stop by Louie’s meats. I always appreciated how the butchers behind the counter answered all of my questions and went above and beyond to ensure customers left with the perfect cut. You may even have the honor of speaking with Louie himself. In addition to classic cuts of meats and steaks, you might also find ox tail, ham balls and fresh fish. If you don’t see it, ask. The prices and quality are remarkable. Another unique item worth trying is Louie’s unique, signature brats, with or without casings. We still haven’t found brats quite like Louie’s anywhere in the Midwest.
