Celebrating significant milestones in 2023

The Surf Ballroom marks its 75th Anniversary this summer in its current location on North Shore Drive. Opened on July 1, 1948, the year after the original Surf burned to the ground, the Surf Ballroom has secured its hallowed place in music history, drawing visitors from around the globe. (See Surf Ballroom anniversary story on the next page.)

In 2022, Clear Lake garnered national attention thanks to “The Day the Music Died: The Story of Don McLean’s American Pie,” a documentary about the 1971 hit memorializing the Feb. 3, 1959, plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. We invite you to explore sites featured in the film: the Surf Ballroom & Museum, a National Historic Landmark, and the crash site memorial five miles north of the historic ballroom in a quiet Iowa cornfield. For the entire itinerary, visit clearlakeiowa.com.

In addition to the national attention the documentary has drawn to Clear Lake, the Surf District — the area in which the Surf Ballroom is located — will receive $35.2 million in enhancements within the next two years. Projects will include a modernized, reimagined Oaks Hotel, gateway and streetscape improvements around and on Buddy Holly Place, and waterfront connections from the Surf Ballroom to the lakeshore. The Music Enrichment Center, which will be reminiscent of the original Surf, will be expanded and relocated to allow for improved performance and educational experiences.

We are also celebrating 50 years of July 4th carnival and midway entertainment with the Evans family this summer with a special opening ceremony in City Park. We hope you join us in honoring them during our weeklong July 4th Celebration. Read more about the Evans family legacy on pages 36-39.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Destination Clear Lake and find it helpful as you plan your lake trip. Explore our new lodging layout on pages 6-12 to help you easily find the best fit for your vacation and anchor your stay at the shore!

Surf Celebrates 75 Years of Keeping the Music Alive

A long, long time ago. Seventy-five years to be exact. After the original building was lost in a blaze of fire and smoke, plans were quickly put into place for a rebuild of the entertainment hot spot. Located directly across the street from its original location, the current Surf Ballroom opened its doors on July 1, 1948.

The Surf soon became a popular dance venue as people from around North Iowa ventured to Clear Lake to take a spin on the hardwood floor. When the 1950s ushered in the era of rock ‘n’ roll, the Surf Ballroom jumped on the bandwagon and booked some of the hottest up and coming artists.

After bringing in famed acts like The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Little Richard and Conway Twitty, the Surf developed into one of the premier places for artists to book on the performance circuit. No one could have predicted what was to come.

How this beautiful place filled with live music and dancing would soon be a place forever connected with tragedy and loss.

When the Winter Dance Party musicians took the stage in 1959, they played to a full house. Music lovers braved the cold,

North Iowa winter weather and came out in droves to hear Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, Dion & the Belmonts and Frankie Sardo rock the stage.

They danced. They laughed. They sang along to the music.

Little did they know that day in history would forever be remembered as The Day the Music Died.

That evening, the small aircraft carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P.

“The Big Bopper” Richardson crashed into a field shortly after takeoff. The musicians, along with pilot Roger Peterson, were killed instantly. America mourned the tragic loss.

And Clear Lake fell into music history.

The Surf Ballroom continued to book top artists as time rolled on. Up-and-coming musicians of every genre found it to be an energizing place to play. Music enthusiasts from across the globe

traveled to the iconic venue to soak in the history and relive a simpler time in their lives. When the Winter Dance Party was revitalized years later, the Surf discovered the music hadn’t died at all. It was alive inside the Surf Ballroom. Over the years, the Surf has done an impeccable job of creating music education programs for our youth. The Music Enrichment Center is a fantastic addition within the Surf family for those looking to take lessons and develop their

4 | Destination Clear Lake clearlakeiowa.com

musical ability. It energizes today’s youth, teaching them the rich history within our community.

The Surf Ballroom has been a staple in music history for decades. In 2009, it was dedicated as a historic rock ‘n’ roll landmark by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Just two years later, it was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But it wasn’t until Jan. 13, 2021, when the Surf Ballroom reached the ultimate status of being designated by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark.

This monumental title meant the Surf Ballroom and Museum had officially etched its place into American music history, ensuring the music continues to live forever.

The following year, the iconic venue became the focal point in America, once again, with the release of the 2022 documentary, “The Day the Music Died: The Story of Don McLean’s American Pie.” While much of the film was about McLean’s rise to fame, there is plenty of footage focused on the Surf Ballroom and the Memorial Crash Site. In fact, you can take “The Day the Music Died tour” throughout Clear Lake to visit the places mentioned in the film. When McLean penned the famous tune, it was to showcase the profound disappointment at the loss of innocence in America, as well as a recollection of the heartbreak felt across the country at the loss of his childhood music idol, Buddy Holly. The song quickly became a hit, breaking all the rules as it climbed the charts.

The history of The Day the Music Died has been passed from generation to generation in Clear Lake. It was the end of an era as music began to morph from the upbeat, happy sounds of the ‘50s into angsty anthems meant for social change in our country.

Who would have ever imagined a place built for dancing would become such an iconic part of music history? A place where people come together from all walks of life to learn about the past. Where they can cherish the memories of those who paved the way for rock ‘n’ roll.

For 75 years, the Surf Ballroom has been a place where everyone is connected by one thing: music.

And in Clear Lake… it lives. Forever.

Surf Ballroom

460 North Shore Drive • (641) 357-6151 surfballroom.com

Known worldwide for its place in rock ‘n’ roll history, the Surf Ballroom keeps live music alive in North Iowa. Fans and musicians alike flock to the site where the 1940s big bands toured and where Buddy Holly, JP “The Big Bopper” Richardson and Ritchie Valens played what was to be their final concert. The Surf brings generations together. Donations accepted. Guided tours can be arranged.

Fox House

449 North Shore Drive • (641) 357-6151

Dance Hall Operator and Surf Ballroom original owner/builder, Carl Fox, lived across the street from the Surf in the home he built in 1948. Lovingly restored, this vintage lakeshore home features many unique furnishings and characteristics. Like the Surf, it is as though time stood still in the home – many artifacts having remained here throughout the years, giving visitors a glimpse of life in the ‘40s and ‘50s. Tours available by appointment only.

Memorial Crash Site

Intersection of Gull Avenue and 315th Street

Directions available at surfballroom.com

After you visit the Surf Ballroom, head to the crash site to complete the final piece of rock ‘n roll history. Just a short drive from Clear Lake, you can pay homage to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson at the site of their fateful plane crash. Bring your walking shoes - it’s a bit of a hike!

Three Stars Plaza

474

North Shore Drive

Located one block west of the Surf’s front entrance, this circular park plays off of the musical significance of the Surf Ballroom and honors the final performance of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. The monument was built and dedicated in 2011 and features an art deco inspired central spindle, holding three 45 records in a position “ready to play.”

At night, it is beautifully lit with bright blue neon lights around each of the records.

High Quality H 2 O Living up to its name

Being the 3rd largest body of water in the state of Iowa, Clear Lake is a gathering place for a variety of aquatic enthusiasts. Fisherman attempt to snag the big one each year; scouring the shoreline as they search for hot spots where the bite is on. Vacationers utilize the 3600-acre space as a playground for all sorts of activities like swimming, boating, water skiing, or simply dangling their feet off the edge of a dock.

It’s common for people to spend a week at our paradise oasis. When you’re here… time moves a bit slower. Living on lake time means enjoying a brisk morning walk and soaking up the final stages of daylight as the sun descends across the water for the night.

It’s boat rides and floating in the hot sun. It’s sandcastles and grill-outs. It’s Clear Lake. And it’s magnificent. The origin of Clear Lake is thought to be dated back around 13,000 years ago, when massive sheets of ice made their way across the state. These glaciers chiseled

Iowa’s landscape, creating the mix of flatland and hills we know today. As the ice scoured the Midwest, it pushed across the countryside with unimaginable force. As the ice began to melt, the flow of the water resulted in some remarkable natural resources, creating the beautiful oasis of Clear Lake for people to enjoy.

But Clear Lake didn’t always have the reputation of being a premier vacation destination in the Midwest. Years ago, the lake was anything but clear. In fact, some might argue it was downright dirty. Knowing the economic impact of the lake on our local economy, the Association for the Preservation of Clear Lake (ASPCL) imparted drastic measures to ensure Clear Lake became everything it could be and more. In the early 2000s Iowa State University and the Iowa DNR began research into water quality and how it could be improved. Runoff from area farmland and waste from wild animals had created a mess in the water. That led to sky-high phosphorus

levels which caused vegetation and fish into a difficult degree of survival. Their recommendation included a massive dredging project. This extensive undertaking was a 4-year overhaul of the little lake, with the end result improving the watershed, vegetation, water clarity and fish habitat. The ASPCL works in conjunction with the Clear Lake Enhancement and Restoration (CLEAR) Project to ensure our beautiful lake remains North Iowa’s most valuable natural resource. This is done by sustaining a healthy ecosystem in the lake and ensuring excellent water quality. A healthy lake provides unparalleled recreational opportunities for the many residents and guests and guarantees economic benefits and stability to small businesses as well as the overall community.

In a nutshell – a clean lake is a happy lake! And we are grinning from ear to ear.

When planning a visit to Clear Lake, a definite excursion to add to your long list of fun activities is a visit to the Seawall. Located downtown near City Park, this unique stone wall stands along the shoreline, a charming location for observation and relaxation. The Seawall wasn’t always a staple of our beautiful lake community, though. In fact, way back in the early 1900s the place was home to the White Pier Dance Hall. A tornado destroyed the property in August 1931, around the same time President Roosevelt formed the Works Project Administration, or WPA. The Seawall became a construction development for the WPA and was completed by workers from the Mason City Transient Farm in May 1936. The Seawall became a popular gathering place for residents and visitors to the area. In 1999, it was extended along the shore, creating four additional blocks and a brick paver sidewalk for strolling along the water.

Over the years, the brutal Iowa winters began to wreak havoc on this beautiful display of craftsmanship. Sections of mortar began to fail, and chunks of the large rocks loosened, falling into the lake. With this architectural masterpiece in disarray, it was clear something needed to be done.

In 2021, the City of Clear Lake and a slew of concerned citizens were determined to save this cherished piece of history in

our community. Architects were called in to analyze the wall, and contractors soon began repairs, restoring it to its original beauty. It was at this time a committee was formed to begin the process of having the Clear Lake Seawall listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This would not only provide the Seawall with recognition but assist in its preservation and assure the historic property is protected for years to come.

At the time of print, we are anxiously awaiting the results of that application.

The Seawall is a focal point in Clear Lake for many reasons. The obvious, of course, is to prevent erosion.

But did you know it’s one of THE BEST places to see our incredible sunsets? During the summer months, hundreds upon hundreds of photos are taken at dusk, capturing the distinct hues of gold and orange as another day ends at

the Lake.

It’s also a primo place for selfies, family photos, senior pictures, and more! The Seawall creates the perfect backdrop to capture all your favorite moments in life! And who can pass up a picnic at the water’s edge? A fan favorite from residents and visitors alike is to grab a meal from one of our fabulous restaurants and enjoy it in the fresh air (or in the car!) with spectacular views.

So, while you’re here, make sure you add a stop along the Seawall to your “must do” list. Take in the craftmanship and beauty of this unique masterpiece. Engulf yourself within the peaceful realm of nature along the shoreline of our scenic community.

The great outdoors are beautifully simple.

The great indoors should be, too.

Decades of Fun

There’s no place like Clear Lake for the Fourth of July.

Dozens of lighted and musical carnival rides, concessions and games wrap around City Park in the heart of downtown with the beautiful backdrop of the lake. “It’s a postcard, the setup, the setting. It’s not like any other event,” said Erin EvansPhipps, who’s been involved with the carnival her entire life. “Clear Lake’s the greatest. There’s no better place to be on the Fourth.”

Erin’s family, who has owned and operated Evans United Shows for more than 70 years, travels to nearly 10 states across the country for more than 30 events from March to mid-November, including at least seven weeks in Iowa.

This year marks Evans United’s 50th annual year of bringing carnival rides

and fun to the multi-day celebration in Clear Lake that has anchored family gettogethers and class reunions for decades.

“Clear Lake’s always been special to us. We’ve made a lot of friends over the years,” said Tom Evans, who runs the family business with his wife, Nancy. “It’s a great town.”

The Evans family is the 2023 parade grand marshal during the celebration on July 4th. The theme of this year’s parade is “Decades of Fun.”

In the early 1970s, Tom’s parents, Bill and Ruth Evans, purchased several rides from the previous owner of rides seen in Clear Lake during the Fourth of July. Their first year in Clear Lake was 1974.

The next year, Tom and Nancy, who married in 1972, took over the carnival’s operations after the untimely death of his parents.

“It’s pretty impressive to look at what they’ve done over the course of all these years,” Erin said about her parents who were in their early 20s at the time. “I’m proud of them. It’s a big accomplishment what my mom and dad created.”

Evans United Shows, of Plattsburg, Missouri, was started in 1947.

Third-generation showmen Tom and his late brother, Jim, built and expanded the family carnival business exponentially in

the following decades. In 2019, the Evans family mourned the death of Jim.

In recent years, Erin, and her husband, Jason Phipps, have taken over many of the day-to-day operations.

Erin only recalls missing two Fourth of July celebrations in Clear Lake since she was born.

She and her younger sister, Emily, spent summers on the road with the carnival and Fourth of Julys in Clear Lake. Swimming

in the lake, shopping at the Ben Franklin store, eating at the Backyard Deli, and one of her favorites, enjoying Shirley Temples and onion rings at the Ritz Club.

“We grew up in Iowa,” Erin said. “It’s where we’ve spent every summer of our lives.”

Ann Owsley was their babysitter on the road in the summers. Her mother taught

with Nancy. After pursuing a career outside the carnival and helping when she could, she returned full time as Evans United’s office manager. Her son, Evan, is also involved with the carnival. They’ve hardly

missed any trips to Clear Lake for the Fourth of July.

Erin, who will be 46 this year, said her dad made sure she learned how to work. Her first job with the carnival was scooping popcorn and packaging cotton candy at about 7 years old, which then progressed to filling up drinks and then working a ticket window.

The bumper cars are where Erin met her “summertime friend” and “buddy,” Jason, who she’s been married to for more than 10 years.

Jason is the carnival manager, the one Tom counts on and has put in charge of basically everything, she said.

You won’t see the carnival in Clear Lake without the Ferris wheel, Tilt-A-Whirl Merry-Go-Round and bumper cars. The Fire Ball and Freak Out — Evans’ newest and perhaps its most expensive acquisition — have been popular rides among carnival-goers, as well.

This year, the carnival’s Ferris wheel will arrive with a new LED light package including 16 patterns that Tom said will look great on a ride that attracts people of all ages year after year.

In March 2020, Evans United Shows was forced to pause its operations due to the global COVID-19 pandemic like many in the entertainment industry.

Evans only did six shows that year, and there was no trip to Iowa. “There were a lot of people in my generation who went out and tried a different venture and left the industry after reassessing things, but I’m all in for the hard work,” Erin said. “We were very fortunate. It was a heck of a year, but we did it and we’re thankful to be back out.”

Erin and Pat Cates, who has worked with Evans United in various capacities for more than 40 years, credit the carnival’s survival to Tom and Nancy’s management. “It was rough on everybody,” Tom said. “We were open a month and waited for the curve to flatten. We were stable enough to stay in business but a lot weren’t, a lot of carnivals have quit within the last two or three years.”

Cates said the carnival’s contract with the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce for the Fourth of July is one of its longest-running.

Nancy invited Cates, a high school classmate, to spend one summer with Evans United after she lost both her

parents unexpectedly. At that time, Erin was in junior high and Emily was in elementary school.

“That year is still going on,” Cates said with a chuckle.

Cates is no longer on the road with the carnival its entire season but instead picks and chooses the handful of events she works and Clear Lake remains at the top of her list.

“It’s like coming home,” she said. “I have so many good friends there. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Cates isn’t the only friend the Evans have convinced to come to Clear Lake with the carnival for the “biggest and best Fourth of July in the United States” over the years. In fact, they’ve had many come and work and return year after year.

Alice Hanley, longtime Clear Lake Fourth of July Committee chair, said she’s honored to be among the Evans family’s wide circle of friends.

“They are generous, caring, and unpretentious, never expecting any praise or recognition. They take great pride in making a positive difference in the community. Evans United Shows makes special memories for kids and grown-ups of all ages,” she said. “It’s been my privilege to help with the Fourth of July celebration and get to know the Evans family. What can I say? I love ‘em!”

The Evans family attributes much of its

success and longevity in Clear Lake to the community — the Chamber, the businesses and the people — who have supported them over the years.

“Clear lake is a true blessing to us,” Cates said. “We have both grown together. As the celebration has gotten bigger, Evans has gotten bigger and as Evans has gotten bigger, so has the celebration. You guys know how to do it and do it right.”
