Gunner Percival Robert Dunham of the Royal Garrison Artillery was just one of many brave Jersey men who served in World War I. What marked Percival out from his comrades was his pioneering work as one of Jersey’s first photojournalists. As Morning News ‘staffer’ between 1912 and 1914 he produced over one thousand photographs that recorded the everyday lives of Islanders with vision and technique that were well before their time. This exhibition marks the passing of one hundred years since World War I by presenting a view, through the lens of one of Jersey’s undiscovered photographers, of the people whose lives would be forever changed by war. Dracula Stretching from London, through provincial England, to the mountainous wastes of Transylvania, Bram Stoker’s timeless gothic thriller embodies the struggle to break taboos, resist temptation and stop the unknown outside becoming the enemy within. As Dracula’s shadow looms large over England, a small group of young men and women, led by Professor Van Helsing, are locked in a struggle for survival where only the fittest will survive. Adapted by John Ginman, this brilliant, theatrical treatment of Bram Stoker’s adventure blends Victorian Gothic with the Contemporary, drawing eclectically on a wide range of forms of popular entertainment that were established or emerging at the time. With specially commissioned live music, powerful ensemble performances and innovative design, Blackeyed Theatre’s Dracula promised an exciting and thought-provoking theatrical experience. Samarès Manor

Jersey’s Garden Treasure

The Fascination of Herbs

The Gardens

Samarès Manor’s herb garden, the largest and most comprehensive in Britain, contains hundreds of culinary, fragrant, cosmetic and medicinal plants, from trees to small shrubs and annuals. The garden, created by renowned garden designer and author, John Brookes, contains large blocks of herbs, set within an abstract array of gravelled paths. The introduction of herbs at Samarès has helped to widen public interest in these versatile plants and encouraged people to design their own herb gardens.

Created in the 1920s by Sir James Knott and substantially restored and replanted over the last twenty years, the gardens of Samarès Manor embrace many different design styles and themes. They include a diversity of environmental conditions and plant types. The gardens evoke feelings of tranquillity and peace, whilst being stimulating, interesting and fun. ■ ■ ■ ■

The Botanical Project Samarès Manor’s response to the increased public awareness in plants and gardening has been to introduce an educational approach to the on-going development of the gardens. It has included a comprehensive programme of plant identification and labelling, together with the creation of gardens which illustrate different design themes and the effects of seasonality, climate and environment. Many tender and exotic plants that thrive in Jersey’s mild climate can be seen growing at Samarès. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

St Catherine’s Woods

Le Noir Pré

Ramsar Sites

Often known simply as “The Orchid Field”, this unique site actually consists of two distinct but adjoining wet meadows. Le Noir Pré and the smaller Le Clos du Seigneur. The site is one of the last remaining strongholds of the Jersey Orchid or loose-flowered Orchid (Orchis Laxiflora). Orchid flowering season May and June.

These are areas listed on the Ramstar List of Westland’s of International Importance which concerns the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Jersey has four! These magnificent sites are; the southeast coast of Jersey, Le Minquiers, Les Ècréhous, and Les Dirouilles, and Les Pierres de lecq (The Paternosters). These sites are truly unique and worth a visit; however, three of these sites are offshore reefs and require a trip by boat. Check out the “Activities” section of the operators who can take you on a short boat trip to see these sites. The south coast area can be walked around and guided walks are available (contact Jersey Walk Adventures – see “Activities”). Important! If you wish to walk around the area independently please seek advice first as the tide rises rapidly and you can become stranded if unprepared. Knowledge of the tides is essentially. Jersey Tourism can provide advice if necessary but recommends that you employ a guide. See “Walking” section of this guide.

St Catherine’s Woods

Also known as Rozel Woods, this woodland is set in a deep-cut, steepsided valley. A stream running through the valley floor has helped develop a wide range of habitats within the woodland.

Les Landes This coastal heathland is the most spectacular aspect of Jersey’s wild environments. Les Landes is Jersey’s largest single expanse of maritime heathland covering 160 hectares and bound by 3 km of high granite cliffs.

Val de la Mare Arboretum

Le Noir Pré

Hidden away in the north west corner of the Island next to Val de la Mare reservoir, is one of Britain’s most unique collection of trees in an arboretum called ‘The Forgotten Forest’. Planted in the late 1970s, seedlings grown from seeds gathered all over the world have progressed into an eclectic collection of mature trees. Divided into zones within the arboretum, North American maples and oaks stand near Australasian eucalyptus trees, interesting flora compliment a majestic wingnut, walnut and hickory zone. Don’t miss a giant Californian redwood specimen or the Japanese zone alongside the conifers and pines. There’s even an ‘Elm Trial Zone’ containing species of the tree which are thought to be resistant to Dutch elm disease.

Grève d’Azette – The Dicq – South East Grève de Lecq, North West

BEACH LIFEGUARDS IN JERSEY A team of professional lifeguards patrol key beaches from mid May to the end of September. Look out for the red and yellow flags which indicate the patrolled areas for swimming. Swim within the flags, but note that when a red flag is flying the conditions are dangerous and unsuitable for swimming. Jersey has some of the largest tidal flows in the world so take care when bathing or exploring the seashore. The beach lifeguard team is only too happy to advise swimmers regarding beach safety, please ask. St Brelade’s Bay has been voted one of the top 10 beaches in the UK by Tripadvisor’s Travellers Choice 2013
