DEVON BELLE 2017

THE DEVON BELLE Thursday 6 – Sunday 9 July 2017 50th Anniversary of the end of Southern Steam An opportunity to enjoy a 3 night mid-summer break in the beautiful South Devon resorts of Dartmouth and Torbay, The Devon Belle also celebrates 50 years since the end of British Rail steam in the South of England. Day 1 Thursday 6 July London to Kingswear via Salisbury and Exeter From London we take the old London and South Western Main Line through the suburbs, past Woking and Basingstoke and into the beautiful rolling countryside of Southern England for a short stop in Salisbury. As we head further west through beautiful scenery we pass through the cities of Bath and Bristol before heading south to the cathedral city of Exeter. From Exeter we head along one of the world’s most scenic stretches of coastal railway – Brunel’s South Devon Railway – which takes us along the River Exe to Dawlish Warren, runs beneath the sea cliffs to Teignmouth, and then follows the River Teign inland. We climb above the resorts of Torquay and Paignton that make up the Torbay seaside before joining the Dartmouth steam railway line and climbing high up onto the top of the cliffs and then descending into the Dart Valley at Kingswear.

12

Day 2 Friday 7 July Day at Leisure in the English Riviera The train will be at rest, but day 3 will give you a chance to explore Devon and discover some of the area’s best attractions. You can choose to explore the area independently, or join one of our optional excursions. Optional Excursions are likely to include visits to Greenway House, ‘the loveliest place in the world’, Torre Abbey House, the South Devon Railway, a walking tour of Dartmoor or boat trips from Torbay. Day 3 Saturday 8 July Optional Steam Trip to Penzance We start out from Kingswear to Newton Abbot, and then steam from there all the way up over the edge of Dartmoor to Plymouth, where we pick up a diesel locomotive to travel across Brunel’s famous Tamar Bridge into Cornwall and along the beautiful Great Western route to Penzance. Passengers will have the option to visit

www.CathedralExpress.co.uk

DEVON BELLE 2017

many of the lovely tourist attractions of Cornwall such as St. Michael’s Mount and the pretty harbour side. On the way back, we head steam hauled to Newton Abbott before a diesel locomotive takes over again for the run home. Day 4 Sunday 9 July Kingswear to London via Weymouth Steam aficionados will recognise the significance of the date as our return of the Devon Belle to the South East will be also marking 50 years to the day since the last steam ran from Weymouth to Waterloo, on 9 July 1967, and our trip will conclude by repeating this momentous day. Setting out from Kingswear, we follow our footsteps as far as Exeter then carry on up the Great Western Main Line to Castle Cary. A diesel locomotive will take the train through the heart of Somerset and Dorset to the seaside town of Weymouth, for a short break by the seaside. Finally, as the afternoon draws to a close, we replicate the last main line steam train into London Waterloo. HOTELS

This special trip was planned deliberately to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the end of Southern steam and our hope was to use a Merchant Navy class locomotive, such as British India Line, to replicate the last trip from Weymouth in 1967. British India Line is now unlikely to be ready in time, so we are pleased to announce that we have reserved Princess Elizabeth as the replacement loco. some with balconies and there’s an upscale restaurant on-site, a spa with pool, steam room and fitness room.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

TERMS & CONDITIONS We strongly recommend that all our passengers take out travel/ cancellation insurance, as charges apply should you need to cancel or postpone your trip for whatever reason, whether your plans change due to ill-health, travel issues or weather conditions. Steam Dreams cannot be held liable for additional costs incurred in making your travel plans and do advise that you do not pre-book travel or accommodation. If you do need to book accommodation in advance, we recommend that you book a rate that includes cancellation insurance should details of your trip change. Timings, routes and locomotives are subject to change as we are dependent on third parties and these are not within our control. For our Multi-day Trips Terms & Conditions, please see our full Holidays by Steam Brochure. Passenger Seating Please note all of our trains are allocated seating and your carriage letter and seat numbers will be shown on your tickets. As a general rule, seats are allocated so that parties of two are given one window seat and one aisle seat. Passengers must be aware that any seating requests must be stated at the time of booking, and that although and we always endeavour to accommodate requests this may not always be possible. Please note that the seat numbers on your tickets also indicate the direction your seat will be facing on the outward journey. F means a forward facing seat and R means a rearward facing one. The actual seats remain the same on the return journey – whether the direction of travel changes or not. This means that if the train reverses, a facing seat becomes reverse for the return journey and vice versa. If there is a problem on the day please speak to one of our members of staff on the train. Train Safety Following a general review of charter train safety, passengers must not lean out of a moving train. Windows can be open but no part of the body or any equipment, such as cameras, may be outside of the carriage. Passengers also may not linger in the vestibules at the end of each coach. Steam Dreams staff will enforce these rules and anyone found breaking these regulations will be asked to leave the train at the next station. Payment Bookings may be paid for by debit or credit cards. Debit card payments do not incur extra charges, but a 2% transaction fee is charged for credit card payments (2.6% for Amex payments), which covers the costs incurred by Steam Dreams for providing this service. Other payment methods including paying by cash or cheque* are still available for telephone bookings only and remain free of charge. *We are unable to accept payments by cheques less than 21 days prior to departure. This is to allow for postage and time to process the payment. Deposits All deposits are non-transferrable and non-refundable. Gift Vouchers, Credit Notes and Discounts All third party gift vouchers, Steam Dreams gift vouchers, credit notes or discounts must be redeemed through the Booking Office and cannot be used for online bookings. In the event of a train being cancelled or you cancelling your booking, Steam Dreams vouchers are non-refundable as a cash payment; however vouchers can be transferred for use against another Steam Dreams trip. Passengers who have booked using a

third party voucher should note that if you choose to cancel your booking within seven days of departure the third party voucher is non-transferable. Discounts may only be used against bookings made after the date of issue and cannot be retrospectively added to any previous bookings. Steam Availability Steam Dreams will use its best efforts to provide steam traction on trips rostered for steam haulage, for the sector(s) advertised as such, but this cannot be guaranteed. On occasion a diesel locomotive may be substituted, mainly due to drought, route restrictions or locomotive failure on the day. In the event that a trip advertised as being at least partially steam hauled has no steam traction, a partial refund will be offered. Occasionally on some tours it may be necessary for a part of the journey to be diesel hauled, normally at the request of Network Rail, the train operating company or the locomotive owner. Where possible we will try to make this clear at the time of booking but it may be necessary for changes to be made at a later stage for operational reasons. Diesel Assistance On steam hauled trips occasionally for operational reasons or due to adverse weather, a diesel engine may be attached to the train. General Conditions Steam Dreams will use its best efforts to ensure that the proposed locomotives, coaching stock, route and times run as advertised and we reserve the right to amend or cancel any part of the tour at any time. Steam Dreams cannot accept any responsibility for the action of third parties and strongly recommends that all passengers take out travel/cancellation insurance. Traveller Health Conditions To get the most out of our trips, passengers must be able to board the train and walk through the carriage(s) to their allocated seat unassisted.
