This incredible weekend tour traces the historic route from London along the East Coast Main Line to Edinburgh. On the return journey, passengers are offered a different view as we travel via the world-famous Settle & Carlisle Railway.

T H E C A P ITA L S E X PR E SS TO E DI N BURGH 2 022 DAY 1 – London to Edinburgh via the East Coast Main line We are planning to depart steamhauled from London King’s Cross and join the East Coast mainline, a historic route which passes Stoke Bank, the stretch on which Mallard achieved her world record speed of 126mph on 3rd July 1938. At York we have a short break before continuing with distant views of the Yorkshire Moors and the Pennines, followed by Durham Cathedral and Gormley’s famous sculpture, the Angel of the North. As we approach Berwick, the Royal Border Bridge comes into view as it curves high above the river. From here the line runs for miles along the cliff tops before descending to the Scottish Lowlands to arrive at Waverley Station.

DAY 4 – Edinburgh to London via the Settle & Carlisle Railway On the return journey, we head through southern Scotland and back across the English Border on our way to Carlisle. From here we join the world-famous Settle & Carlisle Railway which carves through the Cumbrian Mountains. This stunning journey never disappoints, with its dramatic backdrop of beautiful scenery and impressive architecture, including the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct.
Border Bridge
We end our holiday travelling down the West Coast Main Line back to London Euston hauled by a diesel or electric locomotive, arriving in the late evening.
ON BOARD ACCOMMODATION
Passengers have the choice of three classes of travel. In Pullman Style Dining, passengers are seated in vintage carriages with wood panelling, comfortable seats, table lamps and curtains at the windows. On days one and four, a welcome glass of Champagne will accompany the Full English Breakfast or elevenses. Later in the day, you will be served a set evening meal with wine and canapes. Premier Dining passengers are seated in comfortable 1960s Restaurant Cars with wood panelling and large picture windows. On days one and four, you will be served either breakfast or elevenses, accompanied by a glass of Bucks Fizz. Later in the day you will be served a set evening meal. Passengers who travel in Premium Standard will be served complimentary tea and coffee and you may also purchase food and beverages from the on-board team.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATION Passengers will have three nights in one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. You can choose to book hotels with Steam Dreams or independently. All passengers who decide to book hotel accommodation with Steam Dreams will enjoy the added extra of a dedicated representative at the hotel, transfers between the train, excursions and the hotel as well as luggage porterage. Hotel accommodation is booked on a bed and breakfast basis for all passengers. Pullman Style Dining passengers will stay at The Balmoral Hotel, an Edinburgh icon. Premier Dining passengers will stay at the historic 4 star Hilton Carlton Hotel just a two-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley station. Premium Standard passengers will stay at Premier Inn on Princes Street, which boasts views of Edinburgh Castle.
