PLUS DAY TRIPS CHRISTMAS 2015 & SPRING/SUMMER 2016
DISCOVER THE CHARM OF STEAM TRAVEL Holidays By Steam have become an increasingly popular part of the Steam Dreams programme – relaxing journeys interspersed with plenty of time at your destination in lovely hotels with interesting things to do. 2016 brings a new dimension to the steam element of our holidays as we return Flying Scotsman to the mainline, agreeing a number of trips with the National Railway Museum. These include a series of trains in May and June, not only across England, but also to Scotland, Wales and even to Ireland on the first day of our Emerald Isle Explorer from London to Holyhead! The first of these holidays with the locomotive will be a once in a lifetime 4 day trip from London to York and Edinburgh – along the route synonymous with Flying Scotsman. The locomotive joins us in York for a stunning trip along the coast to Edinburgh, with an opportunity the next day to cross the famous Forth Bridge and travel along the Borders Railway behind the locomotive. In early June, we visit Snowdonia as part of the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the end of steam on The Cambrian Coast Express. Our second ever 9 day Emerald Isle Explorer features
not just Flying Scotsman, but on the other side of the Irish Sea new locomotives as well as new destinations Wexford, Cork, Sligo and, for the first time, the option for those of you who wish to spend time in Northern Ireland to visit Londonderry, Giant’s Causeway, the North Antrim Coast and Belfast. Finally the season ends with a return to Cornwall, this year visiting Newquay and Padstow and in common with all our destinations we have selected some lovely hotels in beautiful surroundings, with visits to plenty of nearby tourist attractions and of course Rick Stein’s famous restaurant. The 2017 trip to the Highlands of Scotland and the Orkneys, celebrating the centenary of the First World War naval train, the Jellicoe Express, will also undoubtedly be a major highlight and further details will be announced over the next 6 months. This brochure also includes a resume of our Christmas programme and a preview of our 2016 Spring and Summer trips including the series of trains with Princess Elizabeth to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday and also the day trips with Flying Scotsman. We look forward to welcoming you on board.

FLYING SCOTSMAN TO EDINBURGH Saturday 14 - Tuesday 17 May 2016 What better way to travel to the Scottish capital than behind the world’s most famous steam locomotive, Flying Scotsman, as it makes an eagerly anticipated return to the mainline?
London’s Kings Cross 1923
FLYING SCOTSMAN TO EDINBURGH 2016
Even today the East Coast Main Line is known as the route of the Flying Scotsman, but for the first time in decades it will be exactly that, as the famous locomotive hauls our special Cathedrals Express. This exciting tour leaves London behind a vintage diesel, and Flying Scotsman joins us from York to Edinburgh and return. Passengers will enjoy 3 nights and 2 full days in one of Britain’s most interesting and popular heritage cities.
8
www.CathedralsExpress.co.uk
Day 2 Sunday 15 May With Flying Scotsman to the Borders and Forth Bridge or a day at leisure Passengers can make their own plans for the day or join us for an optional trip through the Scottish Borders or across the Forth Bridge with Flying Scotsman. Recently designated as a World Heritage Site, the views from on the Forth Bridge are truly breathtaking. Our route takes us around the reopened branch line through Alloa, past Stirling and then back to Edinburgh Waverley – plenty of time for dining passengers to enjoy a relaxed evening meal.
Durham Cathedral
Day 1 Saturday 14 May London to York and Edinburgh
We set off on the scenic route past the distant Yorkshire Moors, steam high over the city of Durham and its beautiful Cathedral and on to views of the Angel of the North before crossing above the River Tyne in Newcastle. If anything, further North the scenery is even better as repeatedly we enjoy views of the sea and pretty Northumbrian towns and villages as we approach and cross the Royal Border Bridge at Berwick, sure to be witnessed by a large crowd as Flying Scotsman crosses into Scotland for the first time in years. The run down into Edinburgh winds along the Scottish cliffs before the journey finishes with views of the distant Firth of Forth before emerging into the heart of the capital in Edinburgh Waverley station, close to the hotels where you can opt to stay with Steam Dreams.
The Royal Mile, Edinburgh
During the day you can join us on a scenic journey through Border Country on the longest railway to have been built in Scotland since 1901 – and the longest rail re-opening project in British history. This wonderful journey takes you across rivers and through valleys to spend some time in this beautiful part of Scotland.
FLYING SCOTSMAN TO EDINBURGH 2016
We leave London’s Kings Cross around 8.30am hauled by a vintage diesel for a quick run up the East Coast Main Line to York. Here passengers will witness the exciting sight of our diesel being replaced by Flying Scotsman as she backs on to our train, having spent the past 2 months being exhibited at the nearby National Railway Museum.
Alternatively, visit Edinburgh’s top attractions with an optional excursion to the Royal Yacht Britannia and Holyrood House.

For the rest of our journey we are never more than a short distance from the sea as we climb up and down cliffs - a dramatic backdrop for those enjoying their dinner. Day 1 Wednesday 15 June
Day 2 Thursday 16 June
The Flying Scotsman to Ireland (well, almost!) Our Irish adventure starts at London Euston and heads North behind Flying Scotsman up the West Coast Main Line. Soon the trouble and strife of modern living is left behind to make way for champagne and smiles as we head towards Wales, travelling along the scenic North Wales Coast and across the Menai Strait on Stephenson’s Britannia Bridge, and past the world famous Llanfirpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch station. Arriving early evening, we retire to our hotels for the night in North Wales. For dining passengers, hotels in North Wales will include the 5* Chateau Rhianfa, situated on the Menai Strait with views across Snowdonia and The 4* Tre-Ysgawen Country House Hotel & Spa.
For those who wish to fly direct to Ireland on Day 1, Hotels in Dublin will be provided.
We depart straight from our hotels to the Port at Holyhead for the trip across the Irish Sea to Dublin. All Explorer passengers will be looked after for the sea crossing in a private club class lounge. On arrival in Dublin, we will make the short transfer by coach to Connolly station, where the Emerald Isle Explorer awaits. We steam south from Dublin along the coastal route to Wexford and Rosslare. This new territory for our train is widely known as the most scenic line in the Irish Republic, as it hugs the cliffs and beaches of the East Coast of Ireland, passing through the famous village of Avoca, the setting for the BBC’s religious comedy drama Ballykissangel. Passengers can opt to alight the train at Wexford for their hotels or continue on to the end of the line at Rosslare where we will travel along the main road! Everyone is expected to be ensconced by early evening. Dining passengers will stay at the beautiful 4* Dunbrody Country House Hotel and the Ferrycarrig Hotel, overlooking the River Slaney. Non dining passengers will stay at the Talbot Hotel, ideally located in the heart of Wexford Town, boasting a swimming pool and sauna.

DAYS 7 & 8 – OPTION 2 a Giant Leap into the North
For those choosing this option, day 7 will undoubtedly offer an unforgettable experience. Departing by road coach to Derry, Londonderry (to give it its full name), you will have a couple of hours to spend at this walled city which is now a buzzing cosmopolitan hub of commerce and culture. You can choose to walk across the new Peace Bridge to the railway station or re-join our road coach across the River Foyle to join the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland’s Northern set at the main station for the trip to Coleraine and the Giant’s Causeway. Leaving Londonderry, the railway follows the estuary of the Foyle, hugging the cliffs before we arrive in Coleraine for the short transfer to the Giant’s Causeway by coach. After taking in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, we will be transferred to Portrush and taken by steam along the branch line back to Coleraine and across the north of Ireland back to Belfast. However, you will also have the option of travelling by road coach around the North Antrim Coast, one of the most scenic drives in Ireland. Hotels in Belfast include the Culloden Country Estate and Spa, and the city centre Premier Inn Hotel.
Day 8 Wednesday 22 June Belfast at leisure and steam to Dublin The morning offers an opportunity to visit one of Belfast’s many attractions, including the world famous Titanic Exhibition. In the afternoon we will rejoin our train and steam south across the border to the Republic of Ireland to Dublin, arriving just after tea time. Then, there will be plenty of time to explore this lively city in the evening and find a friendly place to sample a pint or two of Guinness!

Day 9 Thursday 23 June Back to the UK by sea, rail or air Those who have opted to return by sea will leave Dublin on the morning ferry and once again be hosted in a private Club Class Lounge for the crossing. On arrival in Holyhead we transfer to a waiting connecting Virgin train of modern traction to whisk us back to London for an early evening arrival in the capital. For those wishing to fly home, flights will be booked for you and charged at cost, and transfers from your hotel to Dublin Airport will be organised on your behalf. Passengers keen on flying can also choose to miss the first day travelling by train and ferry to Ireland – if you choose to do this you will be booked into a Hotel in Dublin for the night of 15th June and transferred to Connolly station in Dublin on Day 2 for the trip by steam to Wexford. If you would like help, Steam Dreams can organise your outward flights and charge them to you at cost.
We will be using the locomotives and coaches of the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland (RPSI). This thriving body of steam loving volunteers have two sets of coaches one that is allowed to operate both north and south of the border and another which is their dedicated set that only travels in the Irish Republic. The Southern Irish set of 64 seat Craven Coaches are different to those used on trains in the UK with more basic seating and décor but with a very singular Irish ambience, including the only railway bar in the world serving draught Guinness - available exclusively for Dining passengers.

The train will be at rest, but these next two days will give you a chance to enjoy the best that Cornwall has to offer.
You can choose to explore this area independently, or join one of our specially chosen optional excursions. Optional excursions will include a day trip to Padstow, a friendly harbour town where you’ll find a pretty harbour and a great mixture of houses, quays, boat slips, cafés and craft shops. Take the ferry across the river to Rock for some of the loveliest sandy beaches in Cornwall. Alternatively, visit the Bodmin & Wenford Steam Railway, a leisurely 13 mile heritage railway through scenic Cornish countryside, evocative of a 1950’s Branch Line.

Royal Albert Bridge © Paul Gerrard
We travel through the rolling downs of Berkshire and Wiltshire past the White Horses in the Vale of Pewsey and on to the Somerset Levels to Taunton. Soon, we are in Devon and racing along the famous sea wall at Dawlish, so wonderfully rebuilt after the 2014 storms. After climbing up the edge of Dartmoor we descend past Plymouth and cross Brunel’s famous Royal Albert Bridge over the River Tamar and travel into Cornwall. On this outward journey, depending on the timings of Network Rail, we will either go directly to Newquay or passengers will have the option of leaving at Truro for coaches to Steam Dreams hotels, or staying on to Penzance and being transferred by road coach to their pre-booked hotels from there.
Newquay is known as one of the nation’s favourite seaside towns, and exudes the laid back atmosphere you would expect from a town perched on Cornwall’s Atlantic cliffs and bordered by 7 miles of glorious golden sandy beaches.

TERMS & CONDITIONS voucher should note that if you choose to cancel your booking within seven days of departure the third party voucher is nontransferable. Discounts may only be used against bookings made after the date of issue and cannot be retrospectively added to any previous bookings. Steam Availability Steam Dreams will use its best efforts to provide steam traction on trips rostered for steam haulage, for the sector(s) advertised as such, but this cannot be guaranteed. On occasion a diesel locomotive may be substituted, mainly due to drought, route restrictions or locomotive failure on the day. Occasionally on some tours it may be necessary for a part of the journey to be diesel hauled, normally at the request of Network Rail, the train operating company or the locomotive owner. Where possible we will try to make this clear at the time of booking but it may be necessary for changes to be made at a later stage for operational reasons. Diesel Assistance On steam hauled trips occasionally for operational reasons or due to adverse weather, a diesel engine may be attached to the train. General Conditions Steam Dreams will use its best efforts to ensure that the proposed locomotives, coaching stock, route and times run as advertised and we reserve the right to amend or cancel any part of the tour at any time. Steam Dreams cannot accept any responsibility for the action of third parties and strongly recommends that all passengers take out travel/cancellation insurance. To avoid disappointment, passengers are advised not to pre-book transport links before final timings have been released by Network Rail. Traveller Health Conditions To get the most out of our trips, passengers must be able to board the train and walk through the carriage(s) to their allocated seat unassisted. Passengers must make Steam Dreams staff aware of any mobility assistance required at least a week prior to the date of the trip. Mobility assistance includes the use of wheelchairs, walking frames and walking sticks. Wheelchairs, walking frames and mobility scooters must be of the fold-up variety and will be issued with an identity tag before being stored in the guards van and cannot be used on board the train. If in doubt, please contact the Bookings Office for advice. During your time with us, please bring any problems you may experience to the attention of the management so that we may try to rectify them swiftly. Please note that tickets for all day trips are sent out by email unless requested to be sent by post. Brochure Accuracy This brochure was printed in October 2015. We have done all we can to ensure that it is accurate, but due to any changes made by suppliers or human error, information may alter after publication or may be unintentionally incorrect. Please find our full terms & conditions on our website www.CathedralsExpress.co.uk
TERMS & CONDITIONS
We strongly recommend that all our passengers take out travel/ cancellation insurance, as charges apply should you need to cancel or postpone your trip for whatever reason, whether your plans change due to ill-health, travel issues or weather conditions. Steam Dreams cannot be held liable for additional costs incurred in making your travel plans and do advise that you do not pre-book travel or accommodation in advance of day trips. If you do need to book accommodation in advance, we recommend that you book a rate that includes cancellation insurance should details of your trip change. Timings, routes and locomotives are subject to change as we are dependent on third parties and these are not within our control. For our Multi-day Trips Terms & Conditions, please see our full Holidays by Steam Brochure or refer to our website. Passenger Seating Please note all of our trains are allocated seating and your carriage letter and seat numbers will be shown on your tickets. As a general rule, seats are allocated so that parties of two are given one window seat and one aisle seat. Passengers must be aware that any seating requests must be stated at the time of booking, and that although we always endeavour to accommodate requests this may not always be possible. Please note that the seat numbers on your tickets also indicate the direction your seat will be facing on the outward journey. F means a forward facing seat and R means a rearward facing one. The actual seats remain the same on the return journey – whether the direction of travel changes or not. This means that if the train reverses, a facing seat becomes reverse for the return journey and vice versa. If there is a problem on the day please speak to one of our members of staff on the train. Train Safety Following a general review of charter train safety, passengers must not lean out of a moving train. Windows can be open but no part of the body or any equipment, such as cameras, may be outside of the carriage. Passengers also may not linger in the vestibules at the end of each coach. Steam Dreams staff will enforce these rules and anyone found breaking these regulations will be asked to leave the train at the next station. Payment Bookings may be paid for by debit or credit cards. Debit card payments do not incur extra charges, but a 2% transaction fee is charged for credit card payments (2.6% for Amex payments), which covers the costs incurred by Steam Dreams for providing this service. Other payment methods including paying by cash or cheque* are still available for telephone bookings only and remain free of charge. *We are unable to accept payments by cheques less than 21 days prior to departure. This is to allow for postage and time to process the payment. Deposits All deposits are non-transferrable and non-refundable. Gift Vouchers, Credit Notes and Discounts All third party gift vouchers, Steam Dreams gift vouchers, credit notes or discounts must be redeemed through the Booking Office and cannot be used for online bookings. In the event of a train being cancelled or you cancelling your booking, Steam Dreams vouchers are non-refundable as a cash payment; however vouchers can be transferred for use against another Steam Dreams trip.
