NOSTALGIC DAYS OUT & HOLIDAYS BY STEAM January 2020 Edition
WELCOME ON BOARD 01483 209 888 • WWW.STEAMDREAMS.CO.UK
Since our first trip from London to Salisbury in 1999, our aim at Steam Dreams has been to combine the magic of steam travel with beautiful countryside and exceptional on board service. Two decades later, we are proud to offer day trips to more than 35 different destinations and pick up passengers at nearly 100 stations across the UK every year (see page 30 for our full list of boarding points). All our day trip destinations are carefully selected for their cultural and historic appeal. This year’s highlights include our first ever visit to the set of Downton Abbey at Highclere Castle, a trip to Goodwood for The Revival and the return of Flying Scotsman. We look forward to welcoming you on board for an unforgettable day out.

Holidays By Steam
Carbon Offsetting For over 10 years Steam Dreams has been carbon neutral and we are proud of our commitment to the environment. Every time we run a steam charter we make a donation to carbon reduction projects, to offset the carbon emissions that steam engines produce. In order to keep all our trips carbon neutral, we ask all our passengers to contribute a small voluntary supplement towards this cause, to aid our investment to the future. To find out more, visit www.eco-act.com.

Mayflower 400 Celebrations This year marks the 400th anniversary of Mayflower’s pioneering voyage to America in 1620, with many events all over the UK to celebrate the ship and its passengers. We will be joining in the celebrations by taking our own steam locomotive Mayflower, which was named after the ship, to the key towns and cities that make up the National Mayflower trail. The main celebration will take place in Devon and Cornwall in September, as part of our four day holiday.

DINING ON BOARD

The menu, produced in our own kitchen and served from our bespoke Kitchen Car, is comprised of beloved British dishes with a modern twist, using seasonal ingredients whenever possible. Meals are served at a leisurely pace, allowing for station stops along the way and opportunities to alight the train. A single set menu is offered on board, but if notified in advance, we can cater to a range of dietary requirements, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free alternatives. On a typical day trip, you will be welcomed on board with morning pastries followed by a traditional breakfast or brunch. On the return journey, you will enjoy a delicious evening meal. On some journeys the meals offered vary due to the trip length and time of day. This year, we are running some special afternoon tours, where dining passengers will be served a Champagne Cream Tea.

MAYFLOWER 400 TO CORNWALL
24
Monday 14 th September 2020 – Thursday 17 th September 2020 Make the most of the last of the summer sunshine and join us on a commemorative trip to Cornwall to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the most famous date in the Founding Fathers’ history, when Mayflower set sail in September 1620 with a trip behind the locomotive of the same name. The journey to Cornwall promises spectacular views, with two steam locomotives double heading the train along the Dawlish Sea Wall and over the iconic Royal Albert Bridge. You will have two full days to discover the charm of Cornwall’s pretty villages, ancient history, inviting beaches and rugged cliffs. You can also join in with the Mayflower 400 celebrations in Plymouth, with a special train hauled by Mayflower across the famous Royal Albert Bridge over the River Tamar to Par.

Day 3 - Today passengers can choose to enjoy a day at leisure or travel to Plymouth with us to soak up the atmosphere and celebrations taking place. A tour of New Zealand is on most people’s bucket lists – a once in a lifetime trip. What better way to see this unique country than from the comfort of a train, with the Steam Dreams team looking after you for the whole of this amazing three week tour? For those who have never visited this beautiful part of the world – think of a combination of Ireland and Scotland, throw in a bit of Scandi with a dash of Alpine, and you might start to imagine the staggering beauty and variety of this wonderful country. Although 10% larger than the UK, the population of New Zealand is less than a tenth, with only 4.8 million people across the whole country. On top of that the Kiwis themselves are a heart-warming combination of open-mindedness, generosity and friendliness coupled with a vestige of rugged determination that built what in many ways still feels like a frontier country, far away from the madding crowd.
Kaikoura coast
The second half of our adventure takes us by ferry across the picturesque Cook Strait to South Island. Our first stop is Blenheim, in the
heart of the famous Marlborough wine region, followed by the stunning Kaikoura, nestling between the ocean and mountains. After two nights here, giving time to go dolphin or whale watching, we will steam to Christchurch for a couple of days before heading on to Dunedin, which offers the chance of an optional excursion up the Taieri Gorge Scenic Railway. Passengers may choose to return to (or remain in) Dunedin and take the train to Invercargill, before returning back up to Christchurch, with a night at Oamaru on the way. Alternatively, passengers may alight the Taieri Gorge train at Middlemarch and head for the bustling, delightful resort of Queenstown including a tour of the wondrous Doubtful Sound and an overnight stay at the lakeside town of Te Anau.
What’s included • 20 nights accommodation • Steam train travel across New Zealand • Sightseeing opportunities and excursions
