The Packhorse Gallery is of ficially open!! The Packhorse Gallery has now opened its doors to unveil a remarkable collection of art works by local artists.

The former 4000 square foot gym lay empty for 12 years but has now been transformed into a stylised art space to exhibit a variety of art work; everything from paintings and textiles to pottery and jewellery. Visitors are invited to view the various collections and there is something for everyone from moody silhouettes of jazz artists and scenic landscapes to pop culture portraits of Jessie J. All pieces are available for purchase at affordable prices. The space was refurbished in early Autumn this year and S2R moved in earlier this month. The Gallery is decked out in trendy comfy sofas and exposed light fixtures and will benefit further in the New Year from the FREE Wi-Fi the centre is installing – all in all making the Gallery a great place to relax. Support To Recovery (S2R) are a mental health, self-help and well-being charity with offices in Huddersfield & Dewsbury, The idea f the Packhorse Gallery is to help promote recovery through the use of therapeutic art encouraging individuals to express themselves through creativity. Anyone can become a member by paying a £20 member’s fee and display their work. The charity takes a 30% commission which goes back into S2R and the remaining profit to the artist. The Gallery initiative is part of an ongoing revitalisation programme being undertaken by the centre’s owners NewRiver Retail to put the Centre back on the map as an attractive and dynamic shopping destination. NewRiver Retail and the Packhorse Centre management team are working closely with local partners including S2R, Kirklees Council, Huddersfield University, Kirklees College and the HTCPL to rejuvenate and innovate the Centre.

4 • Huddersfield Eye • January 2013

The S2R Packhorse Gallery has received generous funding from Kirklees Council for an initial period of two years but the charity and gallery will rely purely on support and footfall from visitors.

As well as seating and creative stimulus, the Gallery benefits from a large expanse of open space including a blank studio space with floor to ceiling mirrors that would serve well for events, vintage fairs, antiques, visiting workshops or creative sessions. Please get in touch (below) if this opportunity would interest you. Paul Wright, who works for NewRiver Retail said:“The opening of the Packhorse Gallery is an excellent collaboration between charity, community, arts and retail situated at the heart of the town. It is the first step toward a programme of centre rejuvenation that we have planned for the Packhorse. We are committed to driving regeneration in Huddersfield. Very soon we’ll be sharing some exciting initiatives in partnership with Huddersfield University too. The talent emerging from the town is quite spectacular and we’re delighted to be able to harness this to help promote the town.” The Packhorse Gallery is located on the 1st floor of the Packhorse Centre and can be accessed via the entrance stairwell inside the centre on Market Place Mall. The Gallery will be open from 10am – 4pm daily.

Chinese New Year in Huddersfield Huddersfield will be experiencing a touch of Chinese culture this February as we celebrate Chinese New Year. Known in China as the Spring Festival, it is the most significant traditional holiday on the Chinese calendar.

Chinese people believe that whichever year you are born in, you have similar characteristics to the animal of that particular year. Ancient Chinese wisdom says a snake in the house is a good omen because it means your family will not starve.

This year the holiday will fall on Sunday 10 and Monday 11 February. Huddersfield never misses out on a good celebration, therefore there will be a variety of things to do around the town so you can get involved in the Chinese festivities.

This Spring Festival is the perfect opportunity for English citizens to learn a thing or two about a different culture and welcome the Chinese traditions into the country. If you haven’t done so already then try out something simple like eating with chop sticks or try a new dish from your local Chinese restaurant.

Although away from their families for such a special occasion, Chinese students studying at the University of Huddersfield will feel more than at home celebrating with friends at the New Year Gala taking place at St. Pauls Hall on Friday 15 February. President of the university’s Chinese Society Jian Wang and the rest of the group have organised this event for people to enjoy and experience some Chinese culture. The gala promises to have a vibrant atmosphere with Chinese performers, music, dancing and food. ‘I’ll be celebrating Chinese New Year in Huddersfield with my friends, it’s sad being away from my family but it’s nice to celebrate it in a different country and experience it with new people, especially my English friends that don’t know much about it,’ Said journalism student, Natalie Ku. The Huddersfield Chinese Community Centre are also holding an event in Huddersfield, it will be held Saturday 9 February, plans are still being finalised but for more information please ring 01484 430503. There are several myths and traditions behind Chinese New Year, this year is the year of the snake, snake years are sixth in the cycle and recur every twelfth year.

6 • Huddersfield Eye • January 2013

‘Togetherness is a key value within the Chinese community, Spring Festival is the perfect opportunity for everyone to get together and celebrate. British Chinese communities have always tried their best to provide the best festive feeling during Chinese New Year to everybody, no matter their nationalities,’ said Natalie.

Now that Christmas is behind you and no doubt you have lots of new gifts to enjoy, have you thought about clearing out some of your older items and donating them to Kirkwood Hospice?

Kirkwood Hospice has a network of 19 shops located throughout Kirklees, which support the work of the charity, raising vital funds for patient care. The shops are desperately short of good quality stock at the moment and would welcome donations of ladieswear, menswear and children’s clothing, bric-a-brac, books, videos and dvds. Donations can be taken in to any of your local shops, located throughout Kirklees, in Almondbury, Batley, Cleckheaton, Dalton, Denby Dale, Dewsbury, Heckmondwike, Holmfirth, Honley, Huddersfield, Kirkburton, Lindley, Marsden, Marsh, Meltham, Milnsbridge, Mirfield, Newsome and Slaithwaite. Alternatively, if you can’t get to a shop, the Hospice will collect your donations from your home. Call 01484-557900 to arrange a collection.

Kirkwood relies on the generosity of the public of Kirklees, both shoppers and donors. Every penny of profit raised through the shops funds patient care at Kirkwood; in-patients, day patients, home support and bereavement care. The quality of the items being sold in the shops is fantastic, all thanks to the kindness and generosity of Kirkwood’s supporters. Even if you have nothing to donate at the moment, why not pay a visit to your nearest shop. You will be amazed by the quality and value on offer! Please support Kirkwood in 2013 with a donation and help the Hospice continue to care for people in Kirklees living with a life threatening illness. Registered Charity No. 512987

Regeneration Complete Last year saw Greenhead Park’s regeneration come to an end, bringing to a close the works that took five years and £5.4m to complete.

The project was helped along by funding from Kirklees council, free supplies and labour from local tradesmen and Heritage Lottery Funding. However, arguably the most influential people in this project are The Friends of Greenhead Park. The park formally opened in September 1884, just half a mile from the town centre, but feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the town. The early park hosted concerts, flower shows and galas – just as it does today! The Friends of Greenhead Park was formed in 1993 to campaign for improvements to the park. In 2007 the group revitalised, and held a meeting that began the work that was to transform their park back to its former glory. Throughout the five years, new footpaths and lights have been installed, lakes have been reconstructed, railings reinstated, a new play area built and much more. Looking at the full list of improvements it’s easy to see just why it took quite so long. Unfortunately the Park’s 1950s original timber pavilion was beyond repair. The Friends of Greenhead Park worked hard to secure funding for a replacement, which was opened in October 2012 by Kirklees Council leader, Clr Mehboob Khan. The council put £58,000 into the replacement and Glenholt architect Ron Berry worked free of charge to get the pavilion built. Jane Griffiths, secretary of the Friends, said: “It brings to an end the building and bigger work that’s been done in the park, but there’s still horticultural work which will be on-going.”

8 • Huddersfield Eye • January 2013

Jack Haigh was a former Greenhead Park bowler and an integral part of getting the original pavilion built in the 50s. His family made a donation on the day the regeneration was completed. Jane said: “We received a donation from his family and that will go some way towards helping us with the interior works.” Since the completion of the regeneration, people have flocked to the park in their thousands to see the changes. A number of large events have been taking place, and have proved very popular. A commemorative film is to be made about the regeneration, which was filmed by Huddersfield Cine Club throughout the project.

Making Services More Accessible Work has started on an exciting new project to create a purpose-built customer service centre at Civic Centre 3 on Market Street in Huddersfield.

Huddersfield’s specially designed centre, located opposite the bus station, will enable local people to benefit from improved services and better access in a welcoming bright and modern environment. Customers will be able to access a wider range of the most popular services including information and advice on council tax and housing benefits as well as Social Services, Kirklees Passport, homelessness, tenancy relations, private sector housing and much more. The new Huddersfield centre will be a major hub of information and will offer customers self-help and dedicated access channels to complete their transactions quickly and easily, in one convenient location. The open plan centre will allow friendly and expert staff to work with the latest technologies to continue to deliver improved customer service experiences, including a queue management system and greater access to online services. The centre will have a new entrance opposite the bus station to make it even more accessible to the public.

The £1.5m investment in the new centre will be recouped in just over seven years and the project will save around £200,000 a year on existing council costs by becoming more efficient at a time when budgets are being cut centrally. Adrian Lythgo, Chief Executive said: “To improve services the new centre will be open plan and the environment more relaxed and welcoming, with a greater variety of services on offer. There will also be public access computers to enable people to access services over the web and a suite of phones with direct access to our telephone contact centre.” In the meantime, there will be no disruption to services and all will remain at the current centre located at Civic Centre 1 until the new centre opens in late spring 2013.

Over 700 families are affected by childhood cancer each year… At present, Ruddi’s Retreat can only help around 65 of them.

TO HELP MORE FAMILIES, A NEW CARAVAN IS NEEDED... AND FAST! The aim is to eventually have a full amusement park with holiday homes but the charity is run completely by volunteers who need more help.

The cost of a new caravan is around £50,000 (including fixtures, fittings & adaptations). Ruddi’s Retreat is fundraising constantly, with endless events like the big dinner on 1st March to celebrate the charity’s 1st Birthday.

You can help too by choosing Ruddi’s Retreat as the nominated charity of 2013 for your business or place of work. Fundraise while having fun by holding sponsored events, raffles, bun sales or even a bath of beans.

Day one of the Scott Hall Field transformation In late October, a team of six Rosemont volunteers, led by Team Leader Hayley Pearson spent the day at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm, Leeds at the start of a two year project to transform an overgrown field known as the Scot Hall field into a diverse woodland area.

The main task of the day was to clear the dead trees and remove invasive toxic plants like ragwort. Then the team built bonfires of all the waste materials. This was followed by the first stage of the tree replanting programme, which included the planting of lots of willow trees which will thrive well in this area. The field will eventually become a mixed woodland with native trees planted in groups which will then be managed as a traditional coppice. ‘I really enjoyed sawing the trees and raking the grass. It was an extremely rewarding day’ (Jo Ridgway) ‘It was really exciting to be the first team to make a start on this amazing project. I’m really looking forward to seeing the end result in two years time.’ (Amy Braithwaite)

‘I particularly liked the tree planting. It was great to feel that we are creating something for future generations to enjoy.’ (Geraint Jones) ‘Knowing we’d put something back into the local community gave us all a sense of satisfaction at the end of a challenging day.’ (Jill Fish) ‘I thoroughly enjoyed the day. I loved planting the willow trees.’ (Carl Tierney) ‘It was an excellent team building experience and a very worthwhile day. I would definitely volunteer to do this again.’ (Jan Pick-Katolik) ‘It was very satisfying to plant trees which will be there for many years to come.’ (Hayley Pearson) Meanwood Valley Urban Farm, Sugarwell Road, Meanwood, Leeds LS7 2QG Tel: (0113) 2629759 / www.mvuf.org.uk

Tesco Huddersfield welcomes Barry Sheerman MP to celebrate local success This year’s Tesco for Schools & Clubs promotion has been another success, seeing local schools and clubs set to receive fantastic new equipment. To celebrate, the newly refurbished Tesco store on Viaduct Street in Huddersfield welcomed Barry Sheerman MP and local schools to the store. The nationwide scheme enables UK schools and clubs to redeem vouchers from Tesco purchases for all sorts of amazing products from iMacs to drum kits and garden tools to tennis rackets. St Patrick’s Huddersfield, Moldgreen Community Primary School, Dalton Junior & Infant School, and Birkby

Infants School have received over £1500 worth of equipment thanks to Tesco customers in the local area, and were presented with an additional gift from MP Barry Sheerman. Tesco shoppers received vouchers with their purchases, which they could then donate to a school or club of their choice. These schools and clubs then chose what equipment they wanted from the catalogue to benefit and educate children. James Buckingham, Store Manager at Tesco Huddersfield said; “Tesco for Schools & Clubs is a scheme that my team are proud to be part of. Thousands of customers have been collecting vouchers to help their local schools and clubs get new equipment, showing what can happen when a whole community gets involved. We would like to thank our Tesco customers for their support.”

Bringing the Past into the Present 2013 is set to be an exciting year for IK Classics at the Carding Shed, Dobroyd Mills, Hepworth. Since the new premises opened in October last year, bringing together a selection of vintage and automotive themed businesses, things have really gathered pace. As Kerry, who manages High Society vintage clothes, explains: “There’s a lot of exciting opportunities for growth this year. Our immediate plans are to expand into menswear here in the clothes shop. We’ll also be introducing a retro magazine section as well as retro sweets and confectionary, and nostalgic toys and games. “There’s a real demand for all things vintage at the moment and we’ve seen a real boom in 40’s and 50’s revival memorabilia. Not only will High Society cater for women’s clothing but will also be a gentlemen’s outfitters and source of vintage collectables.” Kerry is also a qualified dressmaker and can carry out any alterations required on purchases and other clothing. IK Classics’ Christmas Craft Fair proved very successful, so much so that it’s back by popular demand on Saturday 2nd February 2013.

This Arts and Crafts Fair will comprise purely of artists and craftspeople that make and sell their own wares, acting as a showcase for their creative talents. The fair will also be raising funds for the Hepworth Village Hall. Kerry said, “There’s a great opportunity for us to host events here in aid of various local causes. Not only does it provide a venue to promote local talent and bring the community together but we can also work to improve local facilities too”. The Spring Fair, around Easter time, will be in support of the local preschool and on Sunday 17th March 2013 antiques dealer, Fox and Moon, who has a concession within the IK Classics complex will be holding an antiques fair there. “This year, we want to get people involved, to be inspired and stir their passions for what we’re doing here. The possibilities are only limited to the imagination. For example, we are currently appealing to local businesses to hold their corporate events and regional meetings here. It’s also a perfect venue to hold a themed celebration such as a tea dance or rock ‘n’ roll themed event. We have a wedding booked for the summer, which is really exciting. “Furthermore, our Oil Can Café is the perfect meeting place for local groups and associations, and could also be

used as a place of work for someone mobile looking to meet up with clients, or just have a space to work in that can inspire,” Kerry added. You can find IK Classics and Racing Cars and High Society Vintage Clothes at The Carding Shed, Dobroyd Mills, Jackson Bridge. You can contact The Oil Can Café by calling 01484 680300 and High Society can be reached on 01484 680400. Word About Town Sometimes an opportunity comes along that is just too good to turn down. That was my first thought when I was asked to get involved with the Huddersfield Literature Festival, which takes place next March.

Listening to authors talk about their work – whether they are newly published or of world renown – is always an interesting experience. Working in publishing for many years, I had the opportunity to accompany many authors to different festivals all over the UK, from Ways With Words in Devon to the Hay Festival on the Welsh borders and the Edinburgh Book Festival. Having interviewed Jodi Picoult last year, I’m really pleased she’ll be appearing at the Town Hall for a special postfestival event on 3 April. She’s the bestselling author of more than 20 page turners, including My Sister’s Keeper, which was made into a film with Cameron Diaz. A critically acclaimed bestselling author who won the Whitbread with her first novel, Kate Atkinson will also be taking part, as will short story writer, novelist and writer of The League of Gentlemen, Jeremy Dyson. A writer of international renown who happens to live locally, Joanne Harris has followed the global success of Chocolat with another dozen or so novels, including Runemarks and Runelight for young adults and the recent short story collection, A Cat, a Hat and a Piece of String. Another local author, Annabel Pitcher, will be following the success of her first novel for young adults My Sister Lives on the Mantlepiece by talking about her new book, Ketchup Clouds. There will doubtless be further events confirmed by the time you read this – including creative writing sessions to help aspiring new writers – so keep checking out the website at www.litfest.org.uk – and hope to see you in March.

A year in the life of West Yorkshire Dog Rescue Looking back, what impact has West Yorkshire Dog Rescue made in 2012?

Well we have rehomed over 200 dogs to happy new owners. Here are the stories of some of the dogs we have saved.

Dexter the Bulldog with terrible skin infections and allergies needed steroids and antibiotics, he had a superb nature and after 3 months of intensive care he was rehomed to a family in Birmingham with a female bulldog.

Belle the Yorkshire Terrier who had been used as a breeding bitch and was dreadfully thin with rotting teeth and mammary cancer. She had to be fed every 3 hours day and night. It took 4 months to get her fit enough to be adopted as a companion for another Yorkshire Terrier and the pair are very happy.

Lewis the 5 months old Collie who was rescued from the Stray Dog Pound after his owner failed to collect him. He had been found tied to a tree at the side of a river and was soaking and freezing. Rehomed to train as an agility dog.

Charlotte the Lhasa Apso arrived with infected skin, stinking matted fur full of maggots, rotten teeth and an understandably bad temper. Once her veterinary and dog grooming needs were sorted, she became an affectionate pet for a retired couple.

Freddie the hyper active Lakeland Terrier who was rescued from the Stray Dog Pound after his owner failed to collect him. Freddie required specialist training for 6 months and was eventually adopted by a family who are now fully occupied “playing fetch”.

Roxy who was part of an unwanted litter of 8 puppies handed to us in a cardboard box. Riddled with worms, desperately thin, terrified and unvaccinated, we sorted their problems and Roxy went to live in a country home by the coast.

We look forward to another successful year, visit www.westyorkshiredogrescue.co.uk for more information about our dogs needing homes. 16 • Huddersfield Eye • January 2013

ge Rediscover Milnsbrid r this New Yea

The lengthy works to strengthen the bridge at Milnsbridge caused a dramatic drop in sales with the usual passing trade being diverted out of the town, causing some to label it a ghost town. Thankfully now though, the work is complete and the bridge has reopened. In response to the impact this has had on local businesses, a new association has been formed to promote the town and revitalize local commerce so that it will once more be business as usual. Chairman of Milnsbridge Business Association, Chris Worsley from Milnsbridge’s Easy Fireplace, said: “Milnsbridge is used by thousands of people every week who cut through its streets. We need to promote the village in a positive way so people will not just use it as a cut through.” There are nearly 150 businesses in Milnsbridge, many of which go unnoticed by passing traffic. The Milnsbridge Business Association has been formed to promote the many reasons why passersby should stop and shop in Milnsbridge, complete with a new informative website, detailing the various businesses within the town. Chris added, “There are many ideas on the table for the future and we are hoping to have Christmas lights in 2013.’’

Lose Yourself in a Braz ilian Serenade

Botafogo offers a dining experience that is worlds away from its new premises on John William Street in Huddersfield. As you step through the door you’re immediately transported to BotafogoÊ [bota’fogu], which means “set it on fire” and is the beachfront neighbourhood (bairro) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that inspired this new restaurant. People from Rio call themselves Cariocas and they possess an internal joyfulness that is second to none. Originally from Argentina, Robert

Melman, owner of Botafogo, and his team want to bring all this energy that Cariocas have to Huddersfield. Life is all about fun and what better time to have fun than when you are sharing a meal with your loved ones? Family, friends, partner, you name it… It’s all about sharing good moments… And Botafogo lets you do just that. The colourful, rustic interior instantly lifts your spirits, and the welcoming smiles of the chefs and waiting on staff sets the tone for a relaxed and fun night out. The food and is typically Brazilian, with diners being offered skewers of grilled meats at their tables, from a

22 • Huddersfield Eye • January 2013

fixed price menu where you can eat as much as you like. Service operates on a card system, where each diner has a red and green card, to indicate whether or not they require more food. There’s a kind of ritual and showmanship to the whole affair. You feel excitement as you see another skewer appear from the kitchen and start making it’s way over to you. You wonder what it could be and wait with hungry anticipation as your dining companions are served slices of beautifully cooked meat. Sometimes you’re even required to participate by taking your individual pair of tongs and grabbing your portion as it’s sliced before you.

Food & Drink

Choose from Picanha (cap of rump), the house special, sirloin, chicken thighs, gammon, sausages, honey pork ribs and a special of the week. Delicious chips, rice and Brazilian beans are also included in the fixed price and make a perfect accompaniment to the tender meat. Once you have enough on your plate, simply turn your card to red and allow yourself time to enjoy the delicious food without being over-faced. Then, when you’re ready for more, flip your card back to green and watch as new skewers of food arrive at your table. With this unique way of dining, you’ll never be over-faced or underwhelmed,

you can control your portion size to suit your appetite and have some fun while you do it. It’s a great way of eating for both groups and smaller parties, as there’s sure to be something for everyone. It also gives you chance to try things you otherwise might not, leaving you wondering why you’ve waited so long to do so! There’s a selection of sides that can be ordered in addition to the fixed price offering, as well as delicious traditional desserts and tempting cocktails to enhance your evening. Robert and his dedicated, friendly team really have captured the heart and soul of Rio de Janeiro and brought

it to Huddersfield, to add a taste of South America to the restaurant menu. You’ll have an unforgettable experience that you’ll want to share and leave you wishing to return to your little piece of the exotic right here in the heart of Huddersfield.

Open Monday to Saturday from 5:30pm till 10:00pm (last orders) and Sunday 4:00pm till 9:00pm (last orders). For more information visit www.botafogo. co.uk, call 01484 535440 or email huddersfield@botafogo. co.uk

A Magical Evening Orlando’s Italian Restaurant on Wakefield Road, Grange Moor, has become somewhat of a local treasure, owing to the vibrant and friendly atmosphere created by owners Orlando and wife Carolina, not to mention Orlando’s legendary table magic, and of course its delicious, hearty, authentic Italian cuisine that offers excellent value. All this ensures a visit to Orlando’s is always memorable! On our most recent trip, the first thing we noted was how consistent the warm hospitality is that you receive at Orlando’s. This is a restaurant that’s run by people who are genuinely enthusiastic about offering an enjoyable dining experience. On entry we were greeted by big smile that set the tone for the rest of our evening. Our table for four was booked for 7pm and the lovely lady at front of house took our drinks order. By the time the drinks arrived we were seated. There were a wide variety of dishes to choose from, both contemporary and classic, on the a la carte menu, specials board or the set menu, which at just £12.50 offers fantastic value for 2 courses and a glass of wine. The kitchen is open-plan so you can see

the Chef freshly preparing your food, even making time to say hello should you happen to pass by. Clearly each and every diner is important to the team at Orlando’s and receives the same dedicated attention as each of the dishes that comes out of the kitchen. A friendly waiter took our order and spent a little time chatting with our group. Our food arrived piping hot and beautifully presented. We were offered condiments and our every need was catered for throughout. During the short wait between courses we were even treated to Orlando’s famous card trick. Although Orlando does not proclaim to be the next ‘Dynamo, magician impossible’, he is still a credited member of the Huddersfield Circle of Magicians, and he makes a point of visiting every table to keep them entertained whilst waiting for their food. The children, in particular, were amazed with his balloon-swallowing trick. During our meal, a young lady celebrating her birthday on a nearby table was presented with a cake, complete with sparklers, and a special birthday hat. All the staff sang ‘Happy Birthday’ and even the customers joined in, typical of the atmosphere of camaraderie that defines a visit to Orlando’s. Since the portion sizes at Orlando’s are generous, we didn’t order dessert but on hearing this Orlando insisted we try his signature Tiramisu, which

26 • Huddersfield Eye • January 2013

Don’t forget Valentine’s Day, book early to avoid disappointment! he’s obviously very proud of. And so he should be, the free portion we shared was delicious. We finished this off with a delicious Cappuccino that was decorated with a lovely chocolate heart for the ladies, which was a nice touch. All in all, we had a fantastic night with great food, great service and great atmosphere. The sign of a wonderful dining experience is when you book your next visit on the way out, which we did and recommend that you book a visit of your own too. Gift vouchers are also available, which you can purchase in confidence that the recipient will have a fantastic experience from start to finish. Orlando’s Italian Restaurant has various events and concessions running throughout the week, like the lunchtime special of any pizza or pasta for £5.95, OAP special on Friday lunchtime of 2 courses and coffee for £6.95, a special Sunday Roast menu and even a Tapas night.

You’re never more than a block away! They’re an essential part of every high street, whether you need an early morning pickme-up or are in the mood for a refreshing taste of the continent and beyond; a coffee house is never more than a block away from your town centre. And in Huddersfield we’re blessed enough to have such a rich variety of coffee shops that we thought we’d create a guide to help you decide where to go for that precious, soothing hit of caffeine.

Café Society 15 Byram Street

Neaversons 4 Byram Street

Time Circa Hammond’s Yard, King Street

Located just a stone’s throw away from St Peter’s gardens by Huddersfield Parish Church on Byram Street is the homely Café Society – a family run coffee-shop-come-café who seem keen to put customer satisfaction as a main priority.

Stepping into Neaversons Tea House is much like stepping back in time to the golden age of art deco design and style, though this isn’t a surprise considering the it’s grade II listed building was based on a 1922 design from French modernist designer Le Corbusier. The environment really contributes to the ambience of the place, which can turn ‘a quick coffee’ into a three-hour voyage into the past, forgetting all distractions in the process.

Nestled snugly behind Huddersfield’s main streets lies Time Circa. Being hidden from the hustle and bustle of the streets nearby gives the place a sense of calm, offset only by the welcome sense of national pride conveyed in its Union Jack laden décor: “someone once likened it to Charles Dickens’ Old Curiosity Shop” said co-director Andrew Dunne in an earlier interview with the Huddersfield Examiner, and you’d be hard-pushed to find a closer resemblance anywhere else around town.

Café Society boasts a menu of Cooper’s award winning espressos that could cope with the most demanding of coffee drinker, but it’s clear that their enthusiasm also rests in more culinary based treats: “We love cooking” beams their website before going on to invite customers to let them know if there’s anything they would like to be added to a menu which already offers a full English breakfast for £4.95 or a BLT for just £3. Café Society can also take pride in their “passion” in catering for glutenfree customers. This ranges from their gluten-free breakfast at £5.95, to a range of lovely cakes. All soup at Café Society is gluten-free too. Not only are Café Society’s Espressos refreshing and value at £1.20, but their attitude to their customers conveys a refreshing warmth that can so easily escape the more commonplace franchises that can be found in every city. “We never knew you were here” is a line that one of Huddersfield’s best kept secrets is all too familiar with, but given their outstanding customer service, it can only be a matter of time before Café Society takes its place among the town’s best coffee establishments.

Neaversons pride themselves on providing a rather unconventional selection of teas from around the world, most notably the ‘liquorice and peppermint’, the soothing but sophisticated ‘chocolate flake tea, and the delightfully named: ‘popcorn tea’. If you’d like to be spoilt for choice then look no further than Neaversons. They have no less than five menus based around time of day and deserts, with a separate extensive selection of teas and infusions. This is also the place to go to eat well – in the evenings Neaversons’ kitchen produces food of the highest quality, the pinnacle of which is their mouth-watering 8oz fillet of Hereford beef, with toppings, available for a justifiable £25.

28 • Huddersfield Eye • January 2013

Time Circa is a coffee house with a difference, having developed close ties to Huddersfield’s artistic community, events such as art exhibitions, live music, and poetry is regularly featured in the quirky building that also boasts a fine range of cakes. Such is Time Circa’s ties to the budding artists of Huddersfield that they have been able to begin a creative writing course, while gaining enough widespread interest to host discussion groups where wannabe Wordsworths can gain the confidence and help they need to develop. It seems that Time Circa is a place where coffee and creativity gets to go hand-in-hand.

Betting on a Good Cause On Friday 25th January, the Grosvenor Casino Huddersfield will host a fundraising event in aid of The Mayor of Kirklees Charity Appeal 2012/2013 ‘The Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Trust’. In just over 3 years The Yorkshire Regiment has disbursed £300,000 in benevolence. Over 1000 separate grants have been made to those soldiers and their families of the regiment, and its antecedent regiments, who have found themselves in difficulty or need.

The Grosvenor Casino Huddersfield has the whole package for great night out. It offers a range of experience packages that are ideal to share with friends, family or colleagues, perfect for birthdays, stag and hen parties and corporate events. They range from £15 to £30 per person and include food, a drink and gaming tuition. The Straight Flush Experience is a good introduction to gaming. For just £15 per person you get a drink, bar meal, gaming tuition and a £5 gaming chip. There is no minimum booking requirement on this option.

This assistance through The Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Trust is increasing year on year, both in the number of cases it deals with and the amount of money it spends on grants.

With The Full House Experience you can really go to town and enjoy a fantastic 3-course meal in the Casino restaurant. You will also receive a £5 slots voucher as well as the gaming tuition and a £5 gaming chip. This option is available to groups of 4 people and above.

Tickets for the ‘Fun Casino’ event at Grosvenor Casino Huddersfield cost just £12, with £10 going straight back to the charity and the remaining £2 as a catering charge for the buffet that will be provided.

For parties of 10 or more that prefer to have a buffet for their celebration, there is The Royal Flush Experience at £20 a head. This includes a drink at the bar, a buffet for the group, gaming tuition and a £5 gaming chip each.

The Fun Casino game is a roulettebased fun game with fake money and prizes handed out to the winners and runners up. Free gaming tuition will also be available on the night. The event is for over 18’s only. Tickets can be obtained from Mr A M Dyson, email: mayorkirkchcom@btinternet. com or tel: 07825 131004.

If poker is more your thing, then the Learn to Play Poker Experience is for you. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned player looking to improve, for £15 per person you will have a 2-hour learn to play session with an experienced poker dealer, a drink from the bar and a buffet for the group. This is available to groups of 5 or more.

30 • Huddersfield Eye • January 2013

Perfect for a corporate event, to reward, incentivise or celebrate, is the Poker Experience corporate package at £200 for a group of 10 people. For this you have a host for the evening, a drink and buffet for the group, a 3-hour personalised, private poker game with an experienced dealer and use of the Casino’s poker tables and equipment. If that’s not enough, events staff at the Casino can arrange any additional extras you require to make your evening even more memorable, like cocktails or champagne on arrival or transport in a limousine so you can arrive in style! Now under new ownership, Pure Fitness has ambitious plans for the future. These include replacing equipment with new, state-of-the-art exercise machines and the refurbishment of key areas of the gym. The very latest technology to be introduced from Life Fitness, the top-selling and trusted fitness equipment manufacturer, includes running machines, cross trainers and exercise bikes. These come complete with an individual entertainment centre that has the facility for you to plug in your own iPod or MP3 player, so you can workout to the soundtrack of your choice. You are also able to record your training directly from the machine via a USB bracelet, so you can track your progress. Elsewhere in the gym, the resistance room is being extended to create more workout space and make way for new weight decks. A separate spinning room will also be introduced, with new bikes and disco lights for a truly fun and exhilarating workout. There are also a variety of new classes coming soon.

New Year, New You

Even the changing rooms are being revamped and there will be a completely new steam room to replace existing facilities. All this will be overseen by personal trainer and Gym Manager, former South African rugby player, Barry Jacobsz. Barry has a very involved approach to the personalised training programmes he puts together for the gym’s members. He won’t ask you to do anything he isn’t prepared to do himself and regularly accompanies members on their workout, providing the extra encouragement and support that is needed to reach their goals. And as you may know from previous failed ‘get-fit-quick’ attempts, sometimes all you needed to succeed was that extra incentive of someone else spurring you along. Well that someone is Barry.

biceps and abs, and Thursdays shoulders and abs. The change has been impressive, with me lifting double the weights I was when I started and having a noticeable difference in my physique. Despite the focus being on upper body strength, the intensity of the training has also meant that I have maintained my overall fitness level, and I currently feel fitter than at any point in the last decade. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend using Barry for personal training at Pure Fitness. He’ll listen to what you want to achieve, create a personalized programme, and carefully explain what each exercise is achieving as you work out. You’ll see the results quickly and feel physically fitter within weeks.”

Here’s what one of Barry’s clients had to say: “I started personal training with Barry in June 2011. My initial target was to regain my fitness and strength for football following a long-term groin injury. Barry concentrated on strengthening the injured area, but also on building my core strength to prevent or reduce injuries in the future. This was coupled with a tough fitness regime to increase my overall fitness and recovery time. “Prior to my injury it had been taking me roughly 4-5 days to recover from a full 90-minute football game. Following the strengthening programme, I returned to football at the end of October 2011 and have remained match-fit ever since. My recovery time has reduced to around 24 hours, which, considering I am now 34, is the shortest it has been for around 10 years. “For the past 4 months I have been working on a strengthening programme for my upper body, 3 times a week. Each day has focused on a specific body area, so Mondays have been chest and triceps, Tuesdays back,

So, if you thought you knew all there was to know about this place then think again. Why not use the free day pass offered in conjunction with the Huddersfield Eye to check out what the new Pure Fitness has to offer for 2013. If you like what you see, then now’s the time to sign up, because through January the gym is freezing its 2012 membership prices, giving you all the benefits of the improved facilities at last year’s prices. Don’t miss out and achieve your fitness goals this year in style.

New Year, New You

Transform Your Body,

Change fe Your Li

It’s that time of year when we’re all feeling the effects of festive indulgence, coupled with the energy-sapping dark nights and cold weather comfort food. That’s why so many people make New Year’s resolutions to be healthier or lose some weight. But THIS time, with the help of Body Transformations, make a resolution you actually stick to. “Train smarter,” is the advice of budding entrepreneur and personal trainer, Kirt Nandakumar. In July last year, Kirt opened Body Transformation Gym at Turnbridge Mills on Quay Street, formerly an electrical engineers. The building was given a full refurb, complete with fully equipped gym, changing facilities and two additional rooms, the Rehab Room and Your Heath Hub, to provide a holistic approach to complete health and well being. The gym has also installed a state-of-the-art fingerprint recognition entry system, making it accessible to members 24-hours a day, perfect for those working shifts or who need a workout before or after a long commute. Kirt and his team have an ethos of professionalism and dedication, always looking to improve their qualifications and training so that they can offer consistently high standards of service to the gym’s members.

34 • Huddersfield Eye • January 2013

This approach is proving effective as the gym already boasts a 125 strong membership. Motivation is key, and Kirt likes to keep both his staff and members motivated to work hard and work smart to get the most out of their time at the gym. For example, Kirt regularly runs referral competitions, where the first member to make 10 referrals wins an iPad. Then, once those members are on board, for each month they are a member, Kirt puts money into a pot and all members that have contributed through continued membership get to decide how that money is spent, bettering the facilities for their use. Every machine in the gym has been carefully chosen for it’s special features that make training more enjoyable, such as adjustable fans on the running machines, adjustable handle bars on the exercise bikes or adjustable tension on the running machine belts. All this has come as a result of Kirt’s experience working in other gyms and identifying areas that he felt he could improve on for his own members. Body Transformation Gym also offers classes and groups for abs, circuit training, kettle bells, running, body conditioning and dietary support sessions. After building a good reputation as a personal trainer, Kirt opened his own studio. But the opportunity soon arose to occupy the building at Turnbridge Mills and Kirt’s dream became a reality.

New Year, New You

Where others may have shied away from the challenge Kirt found that by collaborating with like-minded businesses, not only could they benefit from shared clients and split the overheads associated with the building, but they could also create a unique proposition that would change the way people view a gym. ‘Your Heath Hub’ is run by Andrew and Shirley Howie, who offer herbalife products such as skincare products, multivitamins, meal replacement shakes and protein bars, as well as a green tea to aid weight loss and the 24-hour range for sports and athletes. Andrew and Shirley work with their clients on a one-to-one basis, firstly carrying out a wellness evaluation and putting together a personalised plan to meet the clients’ requirements. Clients then return at agreed intervals to monitor their progress and get information, support and advice. The Rehab Room provides a base for a whole range of complementary therapies, such as physiotherapy, sports massage, reflexology, homeopathy and a mobile beautician. These are available on request and advance booking is required. The beauty of Body Transformation Gym is that the businesses are not in competition with each other and can operate independently but can also feed into each other. To their customers, they offer a wealth of knowledge and experience under one roof, so each customer can take advantage of the particular specialism they require.

There really is a community spirit at Body Transformation Gym, of enthusiastic people looking to work together, both staff and members, supporting each other to reach individual and shared goals. Members include business people, students and even a competing athlete, all with the common ground of looking to improve their health and wellbeing and enjoy themselves while they’re doing it. Over the coming months, Kirt will be running a 1000lbs weight loss challenge, where members will combine their efforts to achieve the goal and raise money for charity at the same time. Kirt is also appealing to local businesses to hold a health awareness day at their place of work, where Kirt and his team will visit for free and individually access the workforce, helping them to address their health issues and complaints to encourage healthy, motivated staff. If you are interested in finding out more about how you could benefit from what’s on offer at Body Transformations Gym, you can ring up and make an appointment for a free day pass and meet the team, chat about your requirements, see the facilities and even do a workout.

This year, make a resolution that you actually stick to. For more information call 01484 769704, email staff@bodytransformationgym.co.uk or visit www.bodytransformationgym.co.uk

Medication-free Pain Relief After complaining about a bad shoulder to Kirt, I was offered a half hour consultation and physiotherapy massage to address the problem area, which I gratefully accepted.

The Rehab Room is one of three health and wellbeing businesses that sit within Body Transformation Gym at Turnbridge Mills on Quay Street, Huddersfield.

I’ve been plagued by pain in my right shoulder for many years, worsened by the amount of computer work I do. In the past I’ve been prescribed pain medication, which has helped in the short term but is by no means a long-term solution, so I was more than willing to explore other remedies.

It provides a base for a variety of mobile complementary therapies including physiotherapy, reflexology, beauty therapy and homeopathy. This unique offering is the brainchild of gym owner and personal trainer, Kirt Nandakumar, who has masterminded a group of heath professionals under one roof to the benefit of the gym’s members and clients.

Kirt began by assessing my posture in a standing position, to ascertain clues as to my on going gripe. From this he was able to deduce that as a result of the pain in my right shoulder I tend to use it less. This was something that had never occurred to me before and this revelation has been very useful to understand what is required for rehabilitation.

38 • Huddersfield Eye • January 2013

Next came the massage. As Kirt worked on the different muscle groups of my upper back, it quickly became apparent that the pain I’d been experiencing had created a lot of tension, but gradually I felt this alleviate until I was totally relaxed. What was really interesting was that although the pain felt very concentrated to one place, by loosening all the other muscles around it reduced the overall tension and provided a platform for healing the problem area. I would highly recommend this treatment for anyone with recurring back pain.

Great Expectations...

What does 2013 hold for you? Creating Great Expectations... and achieving them!

For most of us, the New Year begins with great expectations. It may be a resolution, a hope for better things, or plans to change. Inevitably we tend focus on what we want to do differently. But, how many of us find that those positive plans have fallen by the wayside come 1st February? What would happen if we took a different approach? Because a New Year also provides the opportunity to reflect and acknowledge what we have already accomplished!

Why Positive Change is Hard Our brains are wired to avoid change, because learning is energy-intensive, requiring new circuits to be created; referring to existing patterns doesn’t. The brain’s default is to use less energy, which means it’s much easier for us to carry on doing what we’ve always done, rather than practice the new thing until it becomes habit!

Firstly, begin with writing a list of the things you have achieved, or accomplished in the last 12 months. Then, write a second list of the things the first list has inspired you to think about…. new ideas; further developments of the original cunning plan; whatever comes to mind that you’d like to pursue this year. Finally, make a note of the reminders you can create to ensure you establish new habits that allow you to accomplish your goals. Remember, acknowledging last year’s accomplishments can go a long way to inspiring the things you can do this year. And of course, if you need support along the way, here at Success Unbridled we can provide coaching programmes and hypnotherapy to help keep you focused and on-plan! With this issue of The Eye, bring your copy along to get 10% discount off the price of personal coaching, business coaching and hypnotherapy programmes.

Whether you put it down to evolution, Mother Nature, or the power of a Higher Being, as a species we are naturally resistant to change…. and ironically we don’t like to admit it. However, what if a mere 10 seconds of reflection each day were enough to develop those new circuits in your brain? This 10-second rule is the reason that, for millions of us, posting a quote, a phrase or a reminder on our desktop, fridge or mirror is so effective in helping us achieve a goal. The simple act of repetition helps the brain develop the new circuits required to develop a new behaviour or habit. Stepping outside the comfort zone of routine is harder than we expect. Our natural inclination is to come up with the reasons why we might as well not bother going to that event in town be it weather, traffic, time, “I’d have to change my clothes”, or “I haven’t paid yet, so no big loss”. We are the masters of excuses. What if creating a new habit was easier than we think it might be? Implementing change can begin with the simple step of recognising what you are good at – then building realistic expectations from there and creating the reminders you need to accomplish them. So, rather than making resolutions this year, how about making a list of accomplishments? It’s so much more gratifying to realise all you have already achieved, rather than to see the New Year beginning with a list of what needs to be done.

Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for dealing with... Performance anxiety • Panic attacks Depression • Anxiety • Habits Addictions • Stress management Lack of confidence • Low self-esteem Weight management • Phobias

... and much more! Contact Heidi Dawson now for a

Contemporary Tailoring Online This month sees the launch of a new ecommerce website for bespoke tailor, Owen Scott. The cuttingedge site, which allows customers to purchase and make appointments online, goes live in January and marks the next step for forward-thinking business owner and experienced tailor, Scott Hufton. In just 2 years, Owen Scott has built a reputation for quality and originality, with a strong, faithful customer base. In most cases, customers will recommend their friends and family who in turn go to Owen Scott for a bespoke suit of their own. The business, named after the owner and his son, has put Huddersfield firmly on the map, not just for it’s cloth but also now for creative, bespoke tailoring. Where as before, they might have travelled to Leeds or Manchester in search of a bespoke suit, now men from those cities are going to Owen Scott of Huddersfield, thanks to his unique ideas and innovative styling. The new website will now make Scott’s designs and carefully chosen accessories more accessible to customers old and new further afield, even as far a Savile Row, London. The site also acts as a showcase of Scott’s most innovative and creative suits. The inspiration area shows some of the styles that Scott has created, highlighting the scope for a truly contemporary, bespoke suit.

“It’s all well and good saying to our potential clients that we can design something modern and different just for them. But sometimes it’s difficult for them to understand exactly what I mean without seeing some examples. By seeing the pictures on the website they might be inspired to really think outside the box,” explained Scott. The appointment facility of the site allows customers to book slots at the shop on Kings Street in Huddersfield or arrange an office visit in Leeds, Manchester or London, where Scott will go to their place of work for an initial consultation with swatch books of Huddersfield cloth and give advice on what styles will best suit body shape and what materials are best suited to complexion. Customers can choose buttons, lining, pockets and cloth from a wide selection that is also available to view online. Thanks to great supplier relationships with local Yorkshire cloth makers, bespoke suits are completed within 8 weeks of the first consultation, with first fitting at the 4-week mark. Owen Scott also carries a wide range of contemporary suits available to hire for weddings and events, from lounge suits to morning suits. The shop owns every suit on offer, nothing is outsourced, cutting out the middleman for a quick turnaround and to keep costs down. Prices start from just £85, which includes jacket, shirt, waistcoat, trousers, necktie and cufflinks.

42 • Huddersfield Eye • January 2013

Following high demand from the wives and girlfriends of its customers, Owen Scott will soon have made-to-measure ladies sports jackets available. Pictures of these will be displayed on the new website in February. See the new website now at www. owenscott.co.uk or visit Owen Scott on Kings Street, open Monday to Saturday, 9am till 5pm. Tel 01484 530123, email info@owenscott.co.uk.

Leisure

Beat the Blues January can leave you feeling a little down, after all the Christmas and New Year hype. The days can seem long, dark and cold. So here are our top tips for beating the winter blues and looking ahead to spring!

Look after your health

Eat sensibly

Avoid toxins in your diet

Have you considered taking a fish oil supplement at winter-time– as it can help regulate hormones, and beat the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Because of the lack of natural daylight at this time of year, you may also benefit from a Vitamin D food supplement.

Did you know that a lot of the vitamins that our bodies lack in the winter can be found in foods that are ripe at this time of year? Fruit and veg that is high in Calcium, Vitamin C, B, D, and A would be a great dietary choice – for example, apples, butternut squash, root vegetables, etc. Look out for colourful skins and hues.

At Xmas, many of us consumed too much caffeine, alcohol and sugar – so why not detox for a while to see if it helps your mood? Cutting back on sugar and alcohol will also help to shift any unwanted weight that has gathered recently!

Consider a SAD lamp If you feel ‘down’ at this time of year, light therapy could help. There are various types of lamps available that mimic the sun’s rays, without the UV challenges! They are placed on a desk or anywhere where you can soak up the light benefits for short periods, and really make a difference to many people with seasonal depression.

Hydrate Don’t forget to drink lots of water – it will help to curb cravings for those leftover choccies, flush out toxins, and relieve sluggishness.

44 • Huddersfield Eye • December 2012

Walk about Taking gentle exercise, such as walking, is ideal to help boost your energy levels. Just getting outside into the daylight, not necessarily sunshine, will boost your mood and help warm you up if you are feeling chilly. Dress warmly and explore your local area – if you’re pushed for time, your lunchbreak is ideal.

Leisure

This is the perfect time to explore your surroundings.

Take a break

The perfect place

Could a short break help lift your spirits? We have the ideal suggestion. Imagine wandering through the majestic Irish countryside, through glistening trees and past frozen lakes. Or remaining indoors; snuggled by the open fire where you might be lucky enough to watch the snow fall in the most idyllic surroundings. Castle Leslie Estate is nestled in amongst acres of beautiful countryside, all waiting to be explored.

Castle Leslie Estate, pictured above, is the perfect place to rediscover just how magnificent winter can be and beat the winter blues.

Castle Leslie Estate is located in County Monaghan, within 1,000 acres of undulating Irish countryside, dotted with ancient woodlands and glittering lakes; the estate offers an idyllic setting for any outdoor activity and adventure.

The current Winter Nights Promotion at Castle Leslie Estate is available up until the end of February 2013 and includes one night’s stay in either the Castle or the Lodge. The Castle exudes old world grandeur and offers complete respite from the world, while the lodge’s period features provides a cosy and charming atmosphere. This exclusive package includes a full hearty Irish breakfast, a complimentary chilled bottle of bubbly to enjoy and a box of Irish chocolates to indulge in.

Top Tips for the perfectly prepared garden! If you’ve been holding off on certain home interior improvements until the demands of Christmas are out of the way, then now’s a good time to literally get your house in order by taking advantage of the January sales. Make sure your garden is also ready for the New Year with these top tips from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS): In January, your garden could need protecting from frosts, gale-force winds and heavy rain. Check stakes, ties, fleeces and other supports for damage and consider moving plants to sunnier positions to maximize light. Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, as food is scarce for them over winter. Top 10 jobs this month 1. Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch 2. Ventilate the greenhouse on sunny days 3. Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug already 4. Repair and re-shape lawn edges

5. Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out 6. Prune apple and pear trees 7. Start forcing rhubarb 8. Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season 9. Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds 10. Prepare a polythene shelter for outdoor peaches and nectarines, to protect them from peach leaf curl

Business

The Sky’s the Limit for Moin Valli Most of us will only dream of achieving the level of business success that Huddersfield based optician Moin Valli enjoys. And he’s only 35 years old! In November his business acumen was recognised in the Huddersfield Examiner Business Awards when he was named Young Business Person of the Year. It was perhaps one of the highlights so far of Moin’s entrepreneurial journey, which began when he was 12 and worked Saturdays in his uncle’s sock factory. “I was born into a working class family in Blackburn, Lancashire,” Moin explained. “My mum and dad emigrated from India in the early 1960s to work in the cotton mill industry. We never had a lot of money and very early on I had a drive to work and earn money of my own. I remember being very proud of the first £5 I made through working in the sock factory, it gave me the bug – if you work hard for something you will reap the rewards.” Moin’s ability to spot a niche in the market was honed while he was at college when he earned extra money by reconditioning and updating personal computers, which helped to pay his way through college. When he qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Optometry from Aston University and became a fully qualified optometrist he began working as a locum for various multiple and independent opticians. His entrepreneurial drive was still there and he also set up and ran an optical recruitment agency at the same time.

“My goal is to position the Valli Group as the leading independent Opticians across West Yorkshire and eventually beyond, offering professional eye care and outstanding service in our local communities. Along with my excellent team I’m working hard to achieve this through the acquisition of further practices, growth of current practices, business development, extensive financial investment in our staff development and training and the development of niche services.”

“I always wanted to make a career out of running my own business and in 2005, when I was 27, I had the opportunity to establish the Valli Group with the purchase of the Hampshire Opticians practices in Honley, Lockwood and Meltham,” Moin said.

Moin added that the Valli Group had invested heavily in technology, optical equipment and refurbishment spending over £300k in the last six years.

Along with wife Rachel, who Moin had married the year before, the couple set about building the practices and embarked on an ambitious expansion plan. Just a year later he added Openshaw Opticians in Cleckheaton to the group. In 2009 Moin bought Optim-Eyes Opticians in Mytholmroyd, quickly rebranding it to Valli Opticians, and just two years later purchased S D Haigh Opticians in Almondbury. The last 12 months has seen this rapid expansion continue at pace with the acquisition of Mamtora Opticians in Hebden Bridge and the rebranding of the Hampshire practices to Valli Opticians. Moin said: “We have ambitious plans going forward. We are in negotiations to buy practice number eight and will launch an e-commerce website selling niche optical products in 2013.

“This enables us to offer our patients modern, high quality practices with traditional values of the very best in customer service,” he said. The Valli Group also plays a strong role in the communities in which its practices are based. The Group offers a free domiciliary service to elderly and disabled patients who are unable to visit their local practice and Moin regularly delivers talks at local schools and community groups to raise the awareness of eye health. The Group is also recent proud sponsors of local football team Honley FC. Alongside this, the Group offers a service to sufferers of dyslexia and visual stress which enhances their reading ability, a dedicated dry eye service which is the only one of its kind in the area, and specialist services in corporate, safety and sports eye wear.

Swinton Insurance Swinton Insurance was established in 1957 with Swinton Commercial following in 2004. The company has 17 employees across three Huddersfield based offices. Commercial Centre Manager Howard Scott explained ‘ Swinton Commercial is the dedicated commercial insurance division of the Swinton Group which was established to meet the ever-changing demands of UK companies. We have grown organically and through the acquisition of regional insurance brokers, building up a range of experience and expertise to tailor make comprehensive insurance policies unique to each business. ‘Swinton also provides a wide range of insurance including cover for your car, home , life and travel needs as well as specialist products such as cover for classic cars and motor bikes. ‘By developing close relationships with some of the biggest insurance brands out there, as well as specialist insurers who don’t deal direct with the public, we’re able to offer some of the best insurance deals around. Not only that: Swinton gives you more than just our cheapest motor insurance we also give you confidence that you are buying from a dependable provider, whose service you can trust.’ Howard added ‘ as soon as we became aware of the HTCPL we didn’t have to think twice about joining. With our strong presence across the whole of Huddersfield we wanted to further our support of this great town. One of our great concerns when dealing with clients is that a number using Internet sites for their insurance requirements are not always getting the correct advice and in a lot of cases not even getting the right cover. By being part of the HTCPL we want to make everyone aware in Huddersfield that there is the opportunity to have face to face meetings or at the very least a direct phone call with an advisor who can not only make sure they are receiving the best customer service but that all their Insurance needs are taken care of.’ Tel: 01484 868730, 01484 515012, 01484 530445 Web: www.swintoncommerciail.co.uk/local-offices/ business-insurance-in-huddersfield/

Forget Me Not

The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice will be opening the doors of Russell House to the children and families they care for this December. The charity, which cares for children with life limiting conditions, across Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield, will now be able to provide care and offer respite from their new, state-ofthe-art hospice. The hospice is a ‘home from home’ for the children and families with focus on doing everything possible to make children happier and more fulfilled while they are there, however long or short that may be. Just a few of the great facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, a sensory room,

a music room and bedrooms, each with their own en-suite bathroom.

spoke of his excitement for the opening:

One of the key steps towards the opening of Russell House was the appointment of the new Director of Care, Vicki Finlay.

“We are here because sadly, ordinary families face extraordinary challenges and they need and deserve our help.

Vicki has extensive experience in children’s nursing but perhaps more importantly she understands firsthand the needs of the families. As a mum herself with 3 young boys, her youngest son has a heart condition, although not life limiting she has experienced, in her words, “how it blows your world apart.”

I am delighted that our hospice will be opening its doors this festive season and we owe a great debt of gratitude to everyone who has helped the charity get to this stage.”

The charity provides care for children all year round, and with the opening of the children’s hospice, this will allow for 24/7 care to be provided within the state-of-the-art facilities that Russell House has to offer. Peter Branson, Chief Executive of Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice,

Huddersfield Spa Launches New Branding a Spa with a Heart Huddersfield based Alexandra House Spa has recently launched some new branding to demonstrate its core principles and to highlight how the spa differs from its competitors. The branding describes Alexandra House as a Spa with a Heart to show how the spa cares about every client as an individual, strives to make clients feel nurtured and nourished, wants to share a sense of belonging, tailors its treatments to clients’ needs and is filled with a warm, welcoming energy. One of the spa’s regular clients, Kate says “I love Alexandra House because it is such a calm and tranquil place. I can feel my stress

levels drop as soon as I walk in the door. Compared to the bigger more commercial spas it is a much more personal and individualised experience which means I always come back!” So, if you’re thinking about visiting a Spa and would like to go somewhere where you are treated as an individual, where the therapists really care about you, and where you can nurture your heart and soul, then visit Alexandra House Spa in Huddersfield, a Spa with a Heart. Call 01484 303786 or email info@ alexandrahouse.org.uk for more information.

The charity currently supports over 50 children and their families, but with an estimated 700 children in the Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield area who could need the charities support; the demand put on the hospice will continue to grow. It costs around £2.5million a year to run the charity, and with the opening of Russell House, this cost will increase as we help more families in the future.

Signs Express Signs Express supplied plaques for the BIG Energy Upgrade project in community homes. There were 50 plaques in total, made up of 6 different designs for different borough councils across the North of England – Kirklees, Leeds, Barnsley, Doncaster, East Lincs & North Lincs. Each plaque was manufactured from zinc in a cast style & was in-filled with enamel paint to produce a traditional effect with a long exterior lifespan. The plaques will be installed around the different boroughs to show where the project is delivering installation of energy efficiency measures and renewables to houses by adopting a whole house/ whole community approach.

Welcome Centre New member The Welcome Centre has grown from a church based multi-faith organisation.

Referrals come from over 80 local front line services, such as Gateway to Care, C.A.B., Lifeline, Housing Support Agencies, Social Workers, Probation and many more.

It has been based in the Huddersfield Methodist Mission since April 1997, having previously operated under the name of the St. Thomas’ Project from St. Thomas’ Church in Thornton Lodge from 1992-1997.

Basic food packs provided by The Welcome Centre contain sufficient food to last approximately five days and can be adjusted for individual need such as vegetarian or other dietary issues. They also provide toiletries, household packs (with pans, crockery and cutlery etc), bedding, towels, and practical clothing. Almost everything in the packs has been donated.

More than 36 people are involved, including a Centre Manager, one part-time member of staff, 25 volunteers and a Management Committee of eight local people who also work on a voluntary basis.

The Welcome Centre also offers volunteering opportunities to individuals wanting a step up into employment. Volunteers are supported to improve their skills, gain work experience with appropriate training and raise their

Heritage Health Academy New member Heritage Health Academy is a part of the Heritage complex at Wellington Mills in Lindley. As well as the Academy, the complex includes offices, luxury apartments, a spa and beauty rooms and dining facilities. Heritage Health Academy offer a range of classes, personal training, and a luxurious sanctuary consisting of a Turkish steam room, drench pan shower, dry head sauna, chill out area and private snug. Unlike other fitness centres, they do not have fixed resistance machines. Mark Foster of the Academy explains: “Fixed resistance machines only work in one dimension of movement. Each of your muscles has the ability to move in three dimensions; lifting, lowering and stabilising. It is in the two underused dimensions that muscles often become injured. When performing the same movement on a pulley machine

or on a stability ball you will challenge the muscles in all three dimensions. “Every fixed resistance machine exercise can be performed on the dual adjustable pulley, or replicated using dumbbells, barbells and bands. This is the equipment used by The English Institute of Sport and many other training institutions. Trust us to look after you. As the old saying goes ... It’s not what you do, it’s the way that you do it!” Membership starts from £19.95 per month dependent upon facilities and times, with discounts for annual memberships and no joining fee. Peak Membership allows use of all facilities at any time from 07:00 to 21:00 Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00 Saturday and 09:00 to 15:00 Sunday. Off-Peak and Student/ Senior memberships exclude the early morning (07:00 to 09:00) and evening (17:00 to 21:00) sessions.

Mark added: “Joining a health club is one of the most important decisions you will make in your lifetime. Get it right and you will inherit a healthy lifestyle, which you will be able to maintain for years to come. Get it wrong and you might never get the results you are looking for, however hard you try!” 01484 485395 www.heritagehealthacademy.

Business

How to Get Customers for a New Business You’ve taken that that big step and set up your business. Far too many new businesses assume that customers will now find their website and simply beat a path to their door. In reality, getting your first customers is hard work. So here are just a few tips to help you get customers for your new business: • Choose an effective way to promote your business and commit to it! Work out the characteristics of your target customer. What do they read? Are they on-line? What magazines / newspapers are they likely to read? What professional associations might they join? There are lots of places to promote your business – social media, traditional print, pay per click advertising, local newspapers, etc.. BUT none of these are any good if your target customer doesn’t use them!

• Check out the competition. Call them and pretend to be a potential customer to discover their prices and sales pitch. Then, be clear about your own prices. Resist the natural temptation of all new businesses to necessarily undercut your competition. Know the benefits you offer in financial terms and you can then talk about value rather than cost.

• Learn to network. People buy from people. Become an active member of business networking groups. There are lots to choose from. But, just like your other promotional activity, choose your networks carefully and find those that are most likely to work for you. • Ask for referrals. Find businesses that serve the same market as you and collaborate - make an explicit agreement to look for business you can refer to each other. • Work out the benefits your product / service delivers. Remember, in reality, there are only three benefits: Money – this will make or save you money. Time – this will save you time. Pain – this will take away some irritation, annoyance or other difficulty in your day.

• Remember, there’s always something be gained from every customer contact. Even if your proposal is rejected, make sure you ask why. Then you can fix it for the next time. • Finally, if all else fails, maybe it’s time for a reality check. Ask your network if your solution really does address their needs. If not, could you modify your offer to make it truly valuable?

So learn how to express the benefits you offer in these terms.

Bereavement

Time to Celebrate a Life Well Lived The business of death is changing and funerals are no longer the solemn occasions they once were. Most people will only arrange a funeral once, perhaps twice in a lifetime, and when that time comes, it is so important to get it right.

Even in 2013 death and dying is still such a taboo subject, and it was the aim of Independent Funeral Directors Janice Hutton and Richard Arnold to move away from the stereotype and make themselves more approachable and their premises welcoming. Gateway Funeral Services was established in Birkenshaw in September 2009, and a second branch opened in Cleckheaton in 2011. Janice has grown up, and continues to live in Shepley, and works from her office based at home. Having recently been offered the use of a chapel of rest locally, Gateway are now able to offer their funeral service to families in the whole of the Huddersfield area.

when bereaved families need emotional support as the realisation of starting a new life without their husband/wife or child suddenly becomes a reality. Without adequate support or information about the grieving process some are unable to accomplish this. In March 2012 a Bereavement Friendship group was set up to help families come to terms with their loss and provides a safe place where people can come together, and meet other people in the same situation. This is held on the first Wednesday of each month at Gomersal Public Hall from 2pm - 4pm. Gateway has continued to grow steadily, becoming one of the winners of the Telegraph & Argus Business Accelerator Awards, and it is easy to see why. The drive and passion that Richard and Janice share, ensures that every family they look after receives the best possible care, before, during and after the funeral. As for the future, we would like to be able to ensure that more families have a positive funeral experience.

As a Civil Funeral Celebrant, Janice is able to offer families an “in house” service when it comes to arranging the ceremony or service. Many families are looking to celebrate the life of the person who has died, and are beginning to take an increasing part in the ceremony. Traditional coffins are sometimes being replaced by colourful or wicker coffins and very often black is conspicuous by its absence. As a company Gateway are pleased to be able to offer families a choice of innovative ideas and offer an alternative to funeral flowers, working with “A giving tribute” to create tribute cards in memory of the person who has died, and Funeral Photography from Rachel Wallace who recently appeared on BBC 2’s “Dead Good Job”. In this time of recession, it was a bold decision to advertise funerals with a price, which has been very well received by families, who feel more comfortable talking about funerals when they know what they can have, and how much it will cost. A new website launched in November has a modern and approachable feel . Richard said “We do not talk about “a loved one”, or “the late” or even worse the ”deceased”, the person who has died is very precious to the family and should continue to be recognised as such, even after their death”. The website explains gently and concisely what happens following a death, and there is also a “Memory Page” where families who are spread all over the world can bring their thoughts and memories together, especially if they cannot attend the funeral. Following the funeral when everyone else has returned to everyday life, this is a time

Pedal For Pounds 4 Is Here! Huddersfield Town Football Club is pleased to announce the fourth annual Pedal for Pounds bike ride in aid of the ‘Keep It Up’ campaign: The Tour of Yorkshire! The ride will see Chairman Dean Hoyle, Commercial Director Sean Jarvis and Club Ambassador Andy Booth take to the roads for the fourth time on the 240 mile ride around the county to raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance charity and the Huddersfield Town Academy.

The Club’s previous three bike rides have contributed over half a million pounds to the £720,000 raised for the campaign so far since its inception in 2009.

“With the ride circling Yorkshire, we are hoping for lots of support from the many Town fans spread around the county- I think this ride will be the best one yet!”

Commercial Director Sean Jarvis commented, “Fans have been waiting since the epic Pedal for Pounds 3 ride finished to find out what the Club has in store for Pedal for Pounds 4!”

The ride will begin on Wednesday 1 May 2013, with cyclists starting the ride in Huddersfield, and ending it back in Huddersfield in time for the last home game of the season against Barnsley on Saturday 4 May.

“The aim of this season’s ride is to get as many fans, partners and sponsors as possible to take part, and really try and achieve the £1 million goal which we set at the start of the season.
