2016-17 Clemson WOMen's Golf
SEASON OUTLOOK Entering its fourth year of existence, the women’s golf program is coming off its most successful season as a program. Alice Hewson set the tone early, winning ACC and national player-ofthe-month honors after opening the season with victories in her first two tournaments. Hewson also set a program record when she shot a 65 in the first tournament of the year. Later in the season, the Tigers served as hosts for the inaugural Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee. The tournament featured 13 of the top-100 players in the nation, and the Tigers did not disappoint in front of their home crowd. Clemson finished fifth overall, ahead of No. 19 Tennessee, No. 22 Texas A&M and No. 32 Houston. The effort gave Clemson the momentum it needed to finish ahead of No. 19 Florida State, No. 37 Notre Dame, No. 39 Louisville and No. 41 Miami (Fla.) to earn a program-best sixth place finish at the ACC Championships just two weeks later. Hewson, Marisa Messana and Sydney Legacy all finished tied for 19th to lead the Tigers’ effort that would earn them their second NCAA Regional Championship bid. Prior to the regional, Hewson was named first-team AllACC and Clemson’s first ACC Freshman-of-the-Year recipient. She then helped Clemson to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Regional Championships. Over the summer, Hewson achieved her dream of not only competing for Great Britain & Ireland in the Curtis Cup, she helped lead her country to the championship of the European Team Championships. After coaching against the Tigers, first-year head coach Kelley Hester understands the type of program Clemson is and what it can become. “Honestly, I underestimated the pull that Clemson had in the world of women's golf,” admitted Hester. “From the moment the program was announced, kids wanted to go to Clemson with no history and no tradition other than what the men had accomplished. “I felt it when I was coaching in Athens and I definitely felt it when I moved to the Upstate and was trying to get things going at Furman. How could you not be excited to be at a place where kids really want to be? “Additionally, the resources that are available to coaches and student-athletes are really amazing. I believe that if the NCAA allows an athletic department to provide it, then Clemson will find a way to make it happen. As a coach, there is no substitute for knowing that you can take care of your student-athletes.” Hester leads the program following a very successful stint at Furman in which she led the Paladins to the 2015 and 2016 Southern Conference Championships and was named SoCon Coachof-the-Year each season. Under her tutelage, Furman produced the SoCon Player-of-the-Year the last two years and the SoCon Freshman-of-the-Year the last three seasons. Hester has also coached some of the top talent in today’s game. From 2005-08, Hester coached Stacy Lewis at Arkansas, where she was the 2005 SEC Freshman-of-the-Year, 2007 national champion and 2008 SEC Championship individual medalist and SEC Player-of-the-Year. Breaking onto the LPGA Tour in 2009, Lewis has won 11 LPGA events, two of which are majors. Alongside Hester is Heather Bowie Young, who assisted Arizona State to a national title before winning an individual national championship of her own at Texas. Following her college years, Young earned 28 top-10 finishes in 16 years on the LPGA Tour. Between the two new coaches and the talent that this program possesses, they are excited about the year to come. “We have an incredibly competitive group of young ladies. So far, they have been willing to do everything that has been asked of them, but I have a feeling that a few of them have an extra gear that you don't see at practice, and I'm excited to see what this group
can do in the heat of competition.” The Tigers return all but one of last year’s starters, however, they replace that void well with the addition of Ana Paula Valdes. The freshman from Morelia, Mexico joined the program as another student-athlete with experience competing on the national stage. Valdes and Hewson were both selected to represent their countries in this year’s World Amateur Team Championships. “Alice was the ACC Freshman-of-the-Year in one of the toughest conferences in golf,” said Hester. “Additionally, she is the top returner as a sophomore. She and Ana Paula represented their countries at the World Amateur, which means they are ranked in the top three in their nation. “Having two world-class players as underclassmen really bodes well for the future of this young program and gives us a strong foundation moving forward. Early indications in practice show me that we have a ton of talent. We do not have much depth, however, if we can get everyone clicking at the same time, we are capable of playing with anyone.” Hester has five other players with experience on her roster. Sloan Shanahan is Clemson’s career leader in a number of categories and she will participate in the fall before she graduates in December and moves on to the business world. She was a firstteam All-ACC selection as a freshman. Marisa Messana is a junior from Florida who was third on the team in stroke average last year when she played in eight of the 10 tournaments. She has played well in the ACC Tournament each of the last two years with a pair of to 20 finishes. She was Clemson’s top player in two of the events a year ago. Sydney Legacy came on strong last year when she joined the team in January as a junior college transfer. The junior in 2017 had a 77.07 average and finished 19th at the ACC Championship. She was also Clemson’s third best player at the NCAA Regional. Jessica Hoang and McKenzie Talbert are two seniors with considerable experience dating to he fall of 2013 when they both played in Clemson’s first tournament in Charleston. Hoang has played in 28 tournaments, more than any other Tiger, while Talbert is a veteran of 65 career rounds. Two more players join the program in January. Kennedy Swann finished second in the Texas 6A High School Tournament last year and has considerable junior experience, while Ashley Czarnecki is a transfer from Wofford who was a top player in South Carolina coming out of high school.

ROSTER Academic Excellence
Clemson’s women’s golf team has been ranked among the top 10 percent of all programs nationally in terms of APR scores each of the last two years. The women’s golf team and the Clemson football team are the only programs that can make that claim at Clemson. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2011-2012, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. The ACC has long been considered one of the most competitive in the nation on the course and that is the case in the classroom. Clemson is one of nine ACC programs to rank in the top 10 percent in APR scores each of the last two years. The others are Boston College, Duke, Florida State, NC State, North Carolina, Louisville, Miami (FL) and Virginia. Additionally, Clemson had three players named to the Academic All-ACC team last year in Alice Hewson, Marisa Messana and Lauren Stephenson. Hewson also made the All-ACC team on the course. Additionally, Messana and Sloan Shanahan were named Academic Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association. It was the third selection for Shanahan and the second for Messana, who is a 4.0 student.

KELLEY HESTER
It only took Kelley Hester five tournaments to accomplish something the Clemson program had not done in three years…….. win a tournament. The Tigers took home the trophy from the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla. on Feb. 7, 2017, a landmark day for the program in many ways. Clemson finished in a tie for first with 14th ranked Miami (FL) after identical 850 scores, but Clemson was awarded the trophy due to its better score from its non-counter on the final day. Clemson defeated a field of 16 other teams that included 11 of the top 50 teams in the nation and recorded wins over 10th ranked Kent State, 17th ranked Texas and 20th ranked and host school UCF. Seventh after the first round, fourth after the second and still in sixth place with six holes left, Clemson came back to score a school record seven under par 281 on the final day. The victory gave Hester and the Tigers three top four finishes within the first five events of the 2016-17 season. Early success was not a surprise to those who have followed Hester’s career as she had significant experience as a Division I head coach at Arkansas, Georgia and Furman prior to coming to Clemson. In her first 16 years as a head coach (entering the 2016-17 season), Hester already had 16 tournament titles on her resume, plus another 13 second-place finishes and 73 total top fives in 154 events. She had taken 12 teams to the NCAA regionals and five to the national tournament. She had coached 28 all-conference players and 16 of her players had received All-America honors. Most recently, Hester had served four years at Furman, where she took that program to a No 20 final national ranking and a
pair of Southern Conference Championships. It was the first trip to the national tournament in eight years for the Paladin program. Winning seven tournaments in two years, Hester was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year each of her last two seasons at Furman. Under her leadership, Furman produced the SoCon Player of the Year her last two seasons and the SoCon Freshman of the Year the last three. In 2016, Hester led Furman to a 20th place finish at the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore. after finishing fourth at the NCAA Bryan Regional. One of Hester’s first recruits at Furman, Taylor Totland placed 20th among the nation’s individuals in 2016 after qualifying for the NCAA Championships the year before. While claiming her first SoCon Championship in 2015, five of Hester’s student-athletes were honored on the All-SoCon Team, and three of her newcomers were named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team. Prior to the 2015 season, Hester led Furman to consecutive second-place finishes at the SoCon Championships. Hester took the helm of the Furman program after spending the previous five seasons as head coach at the University of Georgia. She led the Bulldogs to five consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and 10th and 15th-place finishes at the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Championships, respectively. In 2009, Hester, who is a LPGA Class A member, was named LPGA National Coach of the Year. Hester’s Georgia squads finished in the top-20 of the final Golfweek/Sagarin rankings in each of her five seasons, including finishing 12th nationally in 2011-12. Along with her team’s consistent success, Hester recruited, coached and developed Marta Silva

KELLEY HESTER Zamora, who was named consensus National Player of the Year in 2011. Throughout her coaching career, Hester has recruited and developed some of the top talent in today’s game. From 2005-08, Hester coached Stacy Lewis at the University of Arkansas where she was the 2005 SEC Freshman of the Year, 2007 National Champion and 2008 SEC Championship Individual Medalist and Player of the Year. Breaking onto the LPGA Tour in 2009, Lewis has won 11 LPGA events, two of which being majors. She has already been named LPGA Player of the Year twice. In five seasons at Arkansas, Hester led the Lady Razorbacks to their best team and individual finishes in school history. Arkansas posted its first top-10 effort at the 2006 NCAA Championships, and Lewis captured individual medalist honors at the 2007 NCAA Championships. The program won five tournaments had 27 top five finishes. Hester was a four-year letterwinner and three-time All-Southeastern Conference selection for Georgia from 1993-96. She was a member of Georgia team that placed fourth at the 1993 NCAAs and captured the 1993 and 1994 SEC championships. Individually, she recorded 21 top-20 finishes in 40 tournaments during her four-year career. Hester graduated cum laude from Georgia with a degree in public relations, was a two-time National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-America Scholar, served as president of UGA’s Stu-
dent-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was selected to be the first female student-athlete to the Athletic Board as a senior. After two years on the Futures Tour (1996-97), a stint as an assistant pro at Idle Hour Club in Macon (1997-99) and a season as head coach at Mercer (1998-99), she returned to the Bulldogs as an assistant coach from 1999-01. Hester was then chosen by UNLV as its first women’s golf coach in 2001 and was charged with building a team from scratch to begin competition that fall. Her efforts paid immediate dividends as Hwanhee Lee captured medalist honors at the fourth tournament in UNLV history. Though Hester left UNLV after one season, her influence continued. The team she put together earned a bid to the 2004 NCAAs where Sunny Oh, a Hester signee, won the 2004 West Regional and finished 11th individually at the NCAAs. A native of Macon, Ga., Hester and her husband Trey have a daughter, Elizabeth “Bebe”.

HEATHER BOWIE YOUNG
After 16 years of experience on the LPGA Tour, Heather Bowie Young joined Head Coach Kelley Hester and the Clemson women’s golf program as its assistant coach for the 2016-17 season. Prior to her professional career, Young was an individual NCAA Champion at Texas after assisting Arizona State to a pair of team national championships. Young turned professional in 1998 after her college career and was on the LPGA by the 2000 season. Over her 16 years on tour she earned over $3.2 million and recorded 28 top 10 finishes in over 300 tournaments. Young, who was born in Washington, D.C, had her best year in 2005 when she finished 16th on the LPGA Tour money list. She played in 25 events that year and made 23 cuts. She had 15 top 25 finishes and nine top 10s. The highlight that year took place on July 10 when she won the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. She won the event in a three-hole playoff against Gloria Park. The Clemson coach overcame a five-shot deficit in the final round to win the tournament. Among the players she defeated in that tournament were LPGA Hall of Famers Meg Mallon, Beth Daniel and Se Ri Pak. She also topped LPGA Major Champions Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel, and Suzann Pettersen. Bowie-Young finished the 2005 season second on tour in greens in regulation (,742), 11th on tour in scoring average (71.46), 11th in the Rolex Player of the Year voting, and ninth in rounds in the 60s. In 2003, Bowie-Young was a member of the United States
Solheim Cup Team. She was selected as a captain’s pick, just the third Solheim rookie selection as a captain’s pick. Respected among her peers, she served from 2011-12 and 2014-15 as a member of the LPGA Player Advisory Group. Bowie-Young had success in the Majors as well. She finished third at the Women’s British Open in 2004, sixth at the women’s PGA in 2000, 10th at the ANA Inspiration and 13th at the US Open, giving her top 15 finishes in four of the five LPGA Majors. She made 14 hole-in-one shots in her career, including one in the Evian Masters. As a student-athlete, Young helped Arizona State to National Championships in 1994 and 1995. She was an All-American each season. She transferred to the University of Texas for the fall of 1995 and won the NCAA Championship in 1997. She was an All-American both of her seasons at the University of Texas. In 1997 she was the Big 12 Champion, the Big 12 Player of the Year and the National Player of the Year. She was later inducted into the University of Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 2011 for her achievements. WALKER COURSE The 20-year dream of golfers in the Clemson family became a reality on October 5,1995. Clemson University officials dedicated a new $8.6 million conference center and a $4.4 million golf course. The conference center is named the Madren Center and is managed by the Clemson University Conference Services. The center is a spacious 56,000 square foot facility, and includes $700,000 worth of state of the art audio and video equipment. It also houses dining facilities. The facility is named after the late Claude V. Madren. He was a Charleston businessman who established a $2.5 million trust fund that will go toward the center when it matures. The golf course is named after Colonel John Emmett Walker, Sr. (Clemson ’26) who’s son Dr. John Emmett Walker, Jr (Clemson ’58) donated $1 million to the course. Colonel Walker was a member of the Clemson football team and an honor military graduate. Another family made a significant contribution to the development of the Walker Course. The Charles B. Feller (Clemson ’43) family initially gave the University $75,000 for seed money to build a golf course in 1974. After the project began, the family supplemented the effort through additional gifts totaling $80,000. The practice facility is named for Charles B. Fellers. Four of the holes are dedicated in honor of former loyal athletic administrators as the result of a $400,000 donation by IPTAY. The holes recognize the contributions of Gene Willimon, Bob Smith, Bob Moorman and Bob Jones. Moorman and Jones were Clemson golf coaches, Willimon was executive secretary of IPTAY for 27 years and Smith was a Clemson football coach and administrator for 30 years. The course features Bermuda fairways and tees and bentgrass greens. The front nine extends along Honeycutt Creek from Old Stadium Road to the Botanical Gardens. The back nine runs high atop a hill overlooking Lake Hartwell and the Blue Ridge Mountains and extends down the edge of the lake with a look resembling a links course. The scenery along the back nine is eye-catching as the course winds near the lake. The signiture hole of the course is the 17th, a par three whose green and sandtrap layout is in the form of a Tiger Paw. Television analyst Steve Melnyk says, “This course is a perfectly balanced course. It has upland pasture holes, tree-lined fairways, and lakeside vistas. These are the three elements golf course architects love most.”
Players of any skill level can enjoy the Walker Course, as there are five different sets of tees. A high handicapper can enjoy playing from the Red (4,667), Gold (5,405) or White (5,934), while the low handicapper can feel challenged by the Champion (6,560) or the Tiger (6,911) tees. After playing a round on the links, players can get a taste of South Carolina at the “Seasons by the Lake” restaurant. Located in the Madren Center overlooking the 18th green and Lake Hartwell, the restaurant features fresh products form South Carolina. The James F. Martin Inn was added to the site in July 1998. It is an 89-room Inn overlooking the golf course and lake and is connected to the Madren Conference Center. It is named for Clemson alumnus Jim Martin, who made a significant donation to the University for the creation of a faculty chair in the School of Business. Membership to the Walker Course is available for individuals and corporations on either a resident or non-resident basis. Public play is also welcome, including golf outings. For more information on the Walker Course, please visit their web site at www.clemson.edu/ conference_center or contact the golf shop at (864) 656-0236. In the fall of 2015, the Walker Course was recognized both on national and state levels as a top golf course. Golfweek rated the Walker Course as one of the top-25 collegiate courses in the country in its “Best Of” issue. Coming in at 10th on the list the course was ranked with courses from schools including Yale, Duke, the University of North Carolina and Ohio State. In South Carolina, the course was voted the best public golf course in the Upstate by the South Carolina Golf Course Rating Panel. The panel is composed of golf enthusiasts representing a diverse range of occupations, handicaps and backgrounds. The objective of the panel is to promote excellence in South Carolina golf course design and operations through competitive rankings, education and public advocacy. In determining their rating, panelists consider several criteria, including routing of the course, aesthetics, distinctiveness and the variety of shot requirements a course demands. “These kinds of rankings are a confirmation of the hard work that’s been done over the past 10 years to make the Walker Course what it is today,” said Walker Course professional Brent Jessup. “Clemson has a course to be proud of, and recognition by others gives us even more reason to be proud.”

WALKER COURSE Hole #1 Par 5 480 yards Players might want to keep the driver in the bag off the first tee with the creek coming into play down the left side for the longer hitters. An intimidating tee shot to begin the round, this shorter than average par five is a very good starting hole. You want to favor the right side of the green with your second shot due to fairway and greenside bunkers down the left side. Longer players should have no problem making birdie four with a good drive down the fairway. Hole #2 Par 4 381 yards A short par four with fairway bunker on the left and hazard down the right side of the fairway. Driver brings the creek that runs between the fairway and green into play. Three-wood is a good choice off the tee and will leave you with only 130 yards to the hole. Left greenside bunker is the target off the tee box. Green is slightly elevated from the fairway so make sure you add at least half a club to your second shot. Hole #3 Par 4 415 yards Challenging hole off the tee. A steep drop-off down the right side of the hole makes you want to keep your driver left, but two fairway bunkers guard the left side that you must stay out of if you want a clear shot to the green. Driver off the tee is a good play and will leave you with 135 yards to the hole. Be wary of over the green and right of the green because of steep drop-offs that will make it difficult to get up-anddown for your par. Hole #4 Par 3 221 yards The first really difficult hole on the course, this long par-three challenges even the best of players. Normally a three or four iron for the average hitter, you must carry your iron shot onto the green or it will end up short and roll back down the hill some 15 yards short of the hole. A long ridge running through he middle of the green separates it into two separate greens. Make sure you are on the correct side of the ridge or you will have a difficult two-putt. Hole #5 Par 5 503 yards Go ahead and rip your tee shot off this par-five. The wide fairway is very inviting to a long tee shot that will leave you with a long iron into the green. The second shot plays downhill so be sure to factor that into your club selection. The narrow but long green makes it easy to low hit long irons or woods into the green. Be wary of the huge greenside bunker short and right of the green, but also watch the drop-off to the left of the green that makes even the best short game player stress a little. Just commit to your second shot and hit a good one.

Hole #6 Par 4 415 yards Another wide open tee shot that invites players to really go after their drives. The more you can cut off towards the left side of the fairway, the shorter your approach shot will be into the green. A good drive will leave you around 110 yards to the hole. Be sure you get an exact yardage for your second shot because the greenside bunker short of the green is a tough up and down. Also long is a bad spot too because you will be chipping back to the green off a down-slope which makes it harder to get the ball to stop. Hole #7 Par 4 396 yards Don’t let the short yardage fool you on this hole. Fairway bunkers down the middle of the fairway really come into play off the tee shot, and another fairway bunker down the right side gives you very little room to bail out. There are three fairway bunkers going down the middle of the fairway, but longer hitters can aim their tee shot at the first one and easily carry it over leaving themselves inside 100 yards for their second shot. Make sure you put your ball on the same level of the green that the hole is on, because if you do not it will be a difficult two-putt. Hole #8 Par 3 213 yards Another challenging par three on the front side, this hole plays slightly downhill but the wind always seems to be blowing in one direction or another which makes it difficult to choose the right club. Normally a three or four iron for the average hitter, you must really focus on this tee shot because just hitting it on the green does not always guarantee a par. Hole #9 Par 4 460 yards Easily the most challenging hole on the golf course. A creek running down
the left side and then across the fairway forces you to keep your tee shot at the two fairway bunkers down the middle of the fairway. Only the longest of hitters can take the ball over the creek to the other side of the fairway. Three-wood is the play for everyone else and your target is the left fairway bunker. A good tee shot will leave you with around 185 yards to the green which is all carry over water. You can always bail out to the right and short of the green if you don’t think you can reach it because fairway runs all the way up on the right side. This green also has a big ridge running through the middle of it so make sure your ball is on the right side of the ridge or it will be a difficult par. Hole #10 Par 4 408 yards A relatively short hole that allows even the average hitter a good opportunity at a birdie. If you are feeling aggressive this is the hole to show it. The further right you take your driver, the less yardage you will have into the green. However there is a fairway bunker down the right side that you must carry or it will be difficult getting your second shot to the green. The green is relatively flat and is guarded by a bunker on the left and a bunker on the right that both should be easily avoided. Hole #11 Par 4 429 yards A wide open tee shot that everyone can take a rip at to try and get the ball as close to the green as possible. Watch out for the fairway bunker down the left side because it is the same yardage as everybody hits their drives. A good tee shot will leave you with 150 yards to the hole. The green is guarded by one bunker short and two bunkers long, but if you have the correct yardage these should not come into play. A relatively flat green allows for a lot of putts to be made.
2016-17 Clemson WOMen's Golf
WALKER COURSE Hole #12 Par 3 178 yards A difficult par three in which the elevation change makes it vary difficult to pick the right club. A creek running down the entire right side makes the right hole locations difficult to attack. The green has three levels, a level on the front then a raised level in the middle and then back down to another level in the back. A severe left to right slope to the left of the green will sometimes kick your ball down towards the green but more often than not your ball will be stuck on the hill and you will have a difficult up and down for par. Hole #13 Par 4 392 yards One of the shorter par fours on the course. Driver is the play for average hitters but longer hitters should hit three wood. The target off the tee is the three fairway bunkers down the right side of the fairway. The ball will land next to the bunkers and kick down to the middle of the fairway. A hazard runs all the way down the left side of the tee so be sure to keep your ball right. The green is elevated some 50 feet so be sure you take enough club on your second shot because if you miss short the ball could roll down some 30 yards. The green is thin from front to back so be sure you get the right yardage. Hole #14 Par 5 528 yards The first par five on the back side this tee shot is very challenging. There is a hazard running all the way down the left side with a drop-off that will kick your ball into the hazard on the left and a drop-off on the right side that will kick your ball into the
rough. A good tee shot will leave you inside 240 yards to the hole to reach the green in two. A greenside bunker guards the green on the left side so you must run your second shot up on the right side of the green. The green, though it might not look like it, slopes from back to front towards Lake Hartwell. A definite birdie hole that can get you back into the game. Hole #15 Par 4 361 yards Another easy birdie on the course because of its short length. You want to aim your driver over the left fairway bunker down the right side of the fairway. A good tee shot will leave you inside 75 yards for your second shot. The green slopes primarily form back to front with a ridge running across the front portion of the green that makes a good backstop for the front hole location. But when reading your putt remember that everything wants to break toward Lake Hartwell. Hole #16 Par 5 539 yards A third consecutive birdie opportunity, this par five is one of the longer ones on the course but is still an easy birdie. A steep drop-off down the left side that will kick your ball towards the hazard running down that side which makes you want to keep your drive down the right. The two fairway bunkers down the left are unreachable unless the hole is playing extremely down wind. Your target off the tee is the 250 yard pole out in the middle of the fairway. A good drive will leave you inside 250 yards on your second shot which plays uphill. The bad miss on this hole is to
the right on your second shot because you will have to flop it over the greenside bunker and then the green is running away from you towards Lake Hartwell. Hole #17 Par 3 192 yards The signature hole on the golf course which is shaped like a Tiger Paw. The four bunkers running across the back of the green makes up the toes and the green is the palm. The wind is really a factor on this hole and can make it play extremely difficult. The water that is in front of the green really does not come into play unless the wind picks up and you chose the wrong club off the tee. The green is relatively flat with one ridge running across the middle. Hole #18 Par 4 400 yards A good finishing hole with a demanding tee shot. You want to keep your drive left of the four bunkers running up the right side of the fairway. There is water right of the bunkers that have attracted many golf balls due to the wind blowing off Lake Hartwell. A good tee shot left of the fairway bunkers will leave you inside 110 yards for your second shot into this twotiered green. A bunker guards the right side of the green, but does not come into play for a left hole location. Make sure you hit your ball on the correct level of the green and this will be a good birdie to finish out the round.

BOND PRACTICE FACILITY
Steve Bond, a former Clemson golfer under Bobby Robinson in the 1970s passed away in August, 2013 after a hard-fought battle with lung cancer. Steve was very appreciative what Clemson had done for him and consequently, he and his wife Margaret faithfully supported the university that blessed him with so much. Steve’s impact on the Clemson program continues today. Prior to his passing he provided an endowment for the construction of the Steve Bond Golf Practice Range. A state of the art facility adjacent to the Penley Golf Building, it was dedicated in the fall of 2014. The Clemson program, men and women, are very appreciative of this generous act on the part of Bond and his family. The Bonds also created a department wide award that recognizes former athletes that embody the qualities that make Clemson such a special place. “Steve and I felt like there were a lot of former athletes that have gone on to do great things,” Margaret Bond said, “We wanted to do something for them.” The award is presented annually to former student-athletes who are at least 10 years removed from Clemson and will be presented at a Clemson football game each year. The recipients are given a gold ring and have their names prominently displayed on campus.
