The signs on the side of the highway as you enter Clemson say “Clemson: In Season Every Season.” From the point of view of most Clemson graduates, the seasons this slogan speaks of are football, basketball, baseball, etc. But a drive through town in the middle of spring, when the azaleas and dogwoods are in full bloom, or a walk through campus in October, when the trees are blazing in the brilliant colors of autumn, will leave little doubt that Clemson is indeed in season, every season. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and caressed by the shores of beautiful Lake Hartwell, Clemson is located in the northwest corner of South Carolina, two hours northeast of Atlanta, GA and two hours southwest of Charlotte, NC. The friendly residents of Clemson and the surrounding towns welcome visitors each year with a true dose of southern hospitality. With its college-town, lakefront setting against a backdrop of mountains and forests, Clemson is characterized by a strong sense of community, a commitment to service and a love of winning – in academics, in athletics and in life.

Since its inception in 1991, the Student-Athlete Enrichment Programs have provided student-athletes a continued commitment to excellence. Our approach is to address the total student-athlete, and we are committed to coaching our student-athletes to success in the academic, personal growth, career, and community service arenas. As an original member of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, we provide opportunities and services to address the changing needs and skills of student-athletes during college and after graduation. This program was selected for the Division I-A Athletic Director’s Association “Program of Excellence” Award, a lifetime award recognizing CHAMP/ Life Skills excellence. The Student-Athlete Enrichment Programs are housed in Vickery Hall, located in the center of campus. The $3-million structure is as impressive aesthetically as other athletic facilities. It recently underwent $300,000 in renovations to further assist our studentathletes in the classroom. But the importance of Vickery Hall to our student-athletes is not found in the structure itself, but in the many programs that the building houses. Vickery Hall opened in the fall of 1991 and was the first facility in the country constructed solely to provide academic support to student-athletes. The two-story, 27,000 square-foot building is open all day and into the evening hours to accommodate the student-athletes’ extended schedules. Our programs are dedicated to provide a holistic, educational experience by inspiring an environment of respect, integrity, and excellence. Through these services, Vickery guides and encourages each individual to reach his or her full potential as a student, athlete, and citizen.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING Clemson University has one of the finest weight rooms in the country. In 2004, the weight room was drastically remodeled, receiving a more modern and updated look as well as a more functional layout. Some of the new and updated features of the weight room include a state-of-the-art sound system, eight flat-screen plasma televisions, state-of-the-art ventilation system, new lighting system, 10 new multi-functional Clemson power racks, Mondo rubber flooring throughout entire weight room, new orange upholstery on all equipment, new paint on surrounding walls and columns, carpeting in entrances and offices and a reconstruction of the entryway walls. The nearly 15,000 square foot facility boasts over 12 tons of weight equipment and lines of Nautilus and Hammer Strength machines. The vast amount of equipment allows the weight room to be used by a number of teams simultaneously. The plush atmosphere provides an interesting contrast to the physical exertion that takes place in the facility. The Tiger Strength and Conditioning program is on the cutting edge of athletic sports enhancement. The multiple training methodologies utilized by the Clemson strength staff ensures that each athlete gets the maximum benefit from resistance training, speed development, nutritional consultation, and sports specific conditioning. ATHLETIC TRAINING Clemson student-athletes in all sports now have the luxury of one of the top athletic training facilities in the nation. In the fall of 2000, the facility completed a $750,000 renovation and was renamed the Hoover Training Facility. The spacious facility features the latest in athletic training needs. There are offices for the employees and new taping tables, the latest in rehabilitation facilities, including stationary bikes, elliptical machines and an underwater treadmill, and a large hydro-therapy area. The Hoover Athletic  Training Facility is state-of-the-art in every aspect. It includes offices for staff and physicians, an orthopedic examination room, a conference room, and library. Clemson University athletics is dedicated to creating and maintaining a positive image for the university within the surrounding communities through a commitment to service. By enabling student-athletes to identify and share their time, talents, and abilities, Clemson’s student-athletes demonstrate a commitment to the community, and also grow as engaged citizens. Headed by Linda White, the Community Relations among studentathletes has reached new highs. In the 2009-10 academic year, Clemson’s student-athletes completed a total of 5,180 hours of service, or an average of almost 11.5 hours per athlete. That’s the equivalent of 3,453 soccer matches, 7,770 basketball games, and more than 5,000 volleyball matches! Clemson’s commitment to service reaches across several initiatives for players and coaches, including Shop With A Coach, Relay for Life, Be A T.I.G.E.R. Field Day, trips to various shelters and elementary schools, as well as hundreds of other initiatives from churches to the Special Olympics. Perhaps the most unique part of Clemson’s efforts is the Be a T.I.G.E.R. program. Clemson continues to be the only Division-I athletics program that uses a comprehensive character education initiative in its outreach activities. As a member of an athletic program at Clemson, student-athletes and coaches can expect to have countless opportunities to enrich the lives of the surrounding community, a crucial part of student-athlete development.

2010 Tiger Cross Country
SEASON OUTLOOK OVERVIEW Optimism will be the watchword for the 2010 season as the Clemson cross country teams prepare to make their move up the ranks within the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeast Region. The sense of optimism that surrounds the women’s team stems primarily from the fact that Clemson returns its top six student-athletes from 2009. Kim Ruck, a track All-American and all-region performer last year in cross country, returns as the unquestioned leader of a hungry group of student-athletes. But she will not be alone, as the Tigers also return talented runners such as Jenna Baker, Stephanie Buffo, Alyssa Kulik, Lauren Reen and Sarah Turman. The women’s team will also welcome a large group of newcomers, 11 runners to be exact. Several of the newcomers could have an immediate impact on Clemson’s lineup, thus pushing the returning group to greater heights. While certainly a more tempered optimism exists within the men’s team, it still exists nonetheless. Chris Slate has the tools to be a top-15 runner at both the conference and regional level, but his supporting cast will be the wildcard in 2010. A solid recruiting class – one that includes a 2009 USA Junior Olympic champion and South Carolina’s Cross Country Gatorade Runnerof-the-Year – should bolster the team’s hopes for the coming season. Assistant coach Brad Herbster has stated his goal is for both teams to place within the top five at the ACC Championships this season. While it may sound like a lofty goal, it should be noted that Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Lawrence Johnson guided the women’s team to a pair of ACC team championships in track & field just two years after an eighth-place finish. Johnson has much of the same designs for the future of the cross country program. “I think the kids that have had a full season under Coach Herbster have grown and learned a lot about themselves, and learned about how tough the ACC is for distance runners,” Johnson said. “We are looking forward to a resurgence in our cross country program. The leaders in our program know it’s possible. They’ve seen the turnaround we’ve had with our women’s track & field program in a short amount of time. Coach Herbster has attracted the kind of student-athletes here that we’ll need to be successful. My charge to them is to work their butts off to make a move from the bottom of the league toward the top. I think it’s a realistic goal to be top five in the ACC, especially on the women’s side.” MEN The Tiger men’s team endured a difficult season in 2009, but the addition of several high-profile recruits should provide a boost to team morale for 2010. Clemson will field a roster of 11 student-athletes, and seven of them will be new to the Tiger program this season. One familiar face for Clemson cross country fans is Slate, a three-year letterman whose improvement on the track in 2010 should translate to more success in the fall. A middle distance standout by trade, Slate took his track performance to a new level this past spring after running the sixth-best time in Clemson history in the 800m and qualifying for the NCAA East Prelims. Slate was Clemson’s top runner at the ACC meet (38th) last season, as well as the Southeast Regionals. “Chris is coming off a really good track season,” Herbster said. “He will be a lot more confident this season. He should be in the mix for a top-15 finish at ACCs and Regionals. He’s got immense talent.” Other returning veterans from last year’s team are Chad Holt, Blake Kennedy and Jasen Turnbull. A native
Clemson Adds Home Course For the first time since 2006, the Tigers will play host to a cross country meet. The Clemson Invitational will be held Friday, Sept. 17 at Musser Farms, a peach orchard on university property (see photos on pg. 2). Course Specifics Name: Musser Farms (8,000m rolling hills) Usage: 240-acre fruit tree research farm Location: Nine miles from Clemson’s campus (604 South Friendship Rd., Seneca, SC 29678) Manager: Billy Newall (bnewall@clemson.edu) of Alpharetta, GA, Kennedy earned valuable postseason experience by competing in the 3000m steeplechase at the USA Junior Championships. He scored at both the conference and regional meet as a freshman a year ago. Turnbull also competed at the NCAA East Prelims in the spring in the 800m. He will provide leadership to a young team in 2010, according to Herbster. Among the eight newcomers, several will have an opportunity from the start of the season to get into the mix to contribute major points for the team. Nathan Hendershot (Pendleton, IN) was seventh at the 2009 Indiana state cross country meet, an impressive accomplishment in that the meet encompasses all classifications. He also was a standout on the track in the middle distance events. Kevin McKenna (Sloatsburg, NY) was a high school All-American in the steeplechase. Aaron Ramirez (Piedmont, SC) was the Gatorade Boys Cross Country Runner-of-the-Year in 2009 after claiming his second consecutive AAA state championship. Perhaps the most heralded incoming runner is Georgia native Ty McCormack. The North Hall High School (Gainesville) product was the 2009 USA Junior Olympic cross country champion. He also earned high school All-America status by virtue of a fourth-place 5K finish at the 2010 New Balance Nationals. “It’s exciting for us to see so many new people out there,” Herbster said. “At the end of the day, Slate will be much more challenged this season. We’ll see more confidence in the kids we have coming back. It will be great to see some leadership start to emerge, and for the kids to take pride in what they’re doing.” WOMEN The 2009-10 academic year was a breakout campaign for Ruck, a budding star in the national scope of collegiate distance running. She was ninth individually at the ACC Cross Country Championships and 11th at the Southeast Regionals last fall. The conference finish was the best by a Clemson female in 11 years, while the regional showing was best by a Tiger female in 16 seasons. Ruck’s success led to an even better showing on the track, where she was ACC indoor champion and an All-American at 5000 meters. She followed with All-ACC outdoor finishes in both the 5K and 10K. A strong student, Ruck has also been named to the AllACC Academic Cross Country Team each of her first two seasons. Clemson’s coaches feel Ruck is more than equipped

to make a run at ACC and Southeast Regional individual championships this fall. “Kim just has an unbelievable passion for running,” Johnson said. “She had a great deal of success last season, but I think even more is in store for her in 201011. She is going to be a household name, as it relates to distance running in the Southeast. We’re excited about what she brings to the table.” Herbster agreed with Johnson’s assessment, and is quick to give all the credit to Ruck for going above and beyond what is expected. “Last year was a learning curve for Kim,” Herbster said. “She gained a lot of confidence from indoor season, then took it outdoor. I was a little surprised she held it together for so long, but it’s a credit to her work ethic and the base she developed last fall.” Buffo and Kulik both made individual strides during the 2010 outdoor track season, as both qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round in the 3000m steeplechase. Kulik established the school record in the event, while Buffo is No. 2 on the all-time list. Last fall, Buffo was Clemson’s No. 3 runner at the ACC Championships and Kulik was the team’s fourth scorer. Reen was named to the All-ACC Academic Team and scored in all five meets she competed in as a first-year freshman. She was the team’s second-best runner at the ACC Championships and Southeast Regionals, finishing 37th at both meets. Baker was an All-ACC and all-region performer in 2008 for the Tigers, before a demanding academic workload took over last fall. Baker spent the summer working at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, but has returned to campus in great shape. Among the other returning runners, Turman is best equipped to contribute to the team’s success in 2010. The sophomore from Taylors, SC scored at both major meets last season and shaved nearly 30 seconds off her 6K time from ACCs to Regionals. While Clemson welcomes 10 newcomers to the roster this season, one of them will not be able to compete for the Tigers in 2010. Kate Borowicz transferred from Georgia Tech and will red-shirt while sitting out this fall. She was the 10th-place finisher last season as a freshman for the Yellow Jackets at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, NC. Borowicz was a standout at J.L. Mann High School in Greenville, SC prior to her time in Atlanta. Her twin sister competes for South Carolina. Natalie Anthony (Randolph, NJ) was a track All-American in the spring after helping Randolph High School’s 4x1600m relay to a third-place finish at the New Balance Nationals. She is firmly expected to be in the mix for one of the five scoring spots. Alyssa Henshaw (Darnestown, MD) and Lauren Hopper (Ashland, VA) could also be impact newcomers. Henshaw won four AAAA state championships with two different relay teams at Northwest High School. Hopper was a two-time All-State performer in cross country for Hanover High School. Other freshmen that could see action in the fall are Michelle Arms (Irmo, SC), Kelly Conway (Albany, GA), Julie DeLong (Avon Lake, OH), Corinne Duvall (North Potomac, MD), Lisa Girard (Greenville, SC) and Alexa Neiling (Mauldin, SC). 3

Outdoors, Clemson took home the 4x100m relay. Both relays went on Head Coach to All-America performances at the NCAA 3rd Season at Clemson Championships. 2009 SEASON REVIEW Ruck Achieves All-ACC, All-Region Status The top performer for Tiger cross country during the 2009 season was sophomore Kim Ruck. After surprising nearly everyone in the fall of 2008 with her success after walking on to the team after high school, she continued to improved by leaps and bounds in her second full season with the squad. Ruck made her season debut at the Mountaineer Open in Boone, NC on Sept. 18. She finished second in the event, leading the Tigers to a runner-up team finish. She then moved up and won the individual championship at the Charlotte Invitational two weeks later. It was the first-ever victory for Ruck, who hails from Greer, SC. Ruck had a career-best 6K time at the ACC Championships. She was ninth in the individual race with a time of 20:26.1, a personal best. Ruck fell just shy of an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, but she did earn all-region status by virtue of her 11thplace showing at the Southeast Region Championships in Louisville, KY. Armstrong Emerges as Team’s Top Newcomer Following an outstanding year as a harrier for the Clemson club team, Kelsey Armstrong moved up to the varsity level in the fall of 2009. The results were impressive, as she was consistently the team’s No. 1 or No. 2 finisher in each meet she competed. The Talbott, TN native started her collegiate career off with a bang, winning the 5K Gamecock Invitational at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC on Sept. 4. She was subsequently named ACC Performer-of-the-Week after posting a winning time of 17:51.03. Armstrong finished third and fifth at the Mountaineer Open and Charlotte Invitational, respectively. She had a personal best over the 5K Charlotte course with a time of 17:32.5. She missed the ACC and Southeast Regionals due to injury.

Injuries Limited Clemson’s Depth Although Clemson made improvements in 2009, injuries kept some of both squads’ top performers on the shelf for much of the season. The biggest injury was to Jenna Baker on the women’s team. She missed the entire season recovering from a stress fracture. Kelsey Armstrong injured her groin and also missed the league and regional meets. On the men’s team, Will Noble did not compete in a meet during the 2009 season. He was sidelined with an injured leg. Bryce Iverson (hip) struggled in his return at the ACC Championships, his only competition of the 2009 cross country season. Iverson was a former AllACC and All-Region performer. Sunde, Slate Consistent on Men’s Side The two most consistent performers last season for the men’s squad were Chris Slate and Jonathan Sunde, both juniors in the fall of 2009. Both finished among Clemson’s top three individuals in each meet during the 2009 campaign. Sunde possessed the Tigers’ top time in the 8K, having run 25:23.3 at the Charlotte Invitational on Oct. 2. Slate was the team’s No. 1 performer at both meets in Boone, NC, the Mountaineer Open and Blue Ridge Open. Slate was Clemson’s top runner on the men’s side at the ACC Championships, posting an 8K time of 24:51.3 for a 38th-place finish. Sunde was close behind in 25:19.6 and 56th place. The two were also the Tigers’ 1-2 finishers at the Southeast Regionals in November.

Regionally-Ranked Tigers Following an outstanding showing at the Oct. 2 Charlotte Invitational, both the men’s and women’s teams were ranked in the following week’s Southeast Region poll. The rankings are determined by a representative from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
2010 Tiger Cross Country
The women ranked No. 12, despite competing without one of their top harriers in junior Jenna Baker. The men were ranked No. 15 for back-to-back weeks, before falling out of the list for the Oct. 19 poll. Both teams finished the season among the top-15 teams in the Southeast Region. The women were No. 12 at the meet in Louisville, KY, while the men brought home a 15th-place finish. Men/Women Runner-Up in Columbia, Charlotte While Clemson did not earn a team title during the 2009 cross country season, the Tiger teams did collect several runner-up finishes. At two meets in particular, the Gamecock Invitational and Charlotte Invitational, both squads were runner-up on the same day. Kelsey Armstrong was individual champion at the Gamecock meet on Sept. 4 in Columbia, SC. Then, at the Charlotte meet a month later, Kim Ruck took the top individual honor. In both cases, the women’s team was runner-up. Jonathan Sunde was runner-up individually at the Gamecock Invitational, while Chris Slate was fifth. At the Charlotte meet, Sunde was 12th and two other Tigers, Chad Holt (16th) and Slate (19th), finished in the top 20 among individuals. Three Tigers Named to All-ACC Academic Team Following the 2009 season, three members of the two cross country teams from Clemson were selected to the All-ACC Academic Team. Kim Ruck led the way as a second-time selection to the squad, and she was joined by freshman Lauren Reen as well. From the men’s team, Jonathan Sunde also earned his second career All-ACC Academic nod. Ruck went on to earn All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as well.
