UCC volleyball opens season with sweep BY GARTH SHANKLIN Sports Editor
As evidenced by changes to athletic schedules across the country, colleges were not exempt from coronavirus impacts. The University of Cincinnati - Clermont is no exception. The USCAA officially postponed fall sports tournaments in July but gave schools the option to play games in the fall. While neither the men’s nor women’s team will compete until spring, UC Clermont’s volleyball team opened up play this past weekend, sweeping Alice Lloyd in three sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-17). “We started off well,” head coach Josh Hamer said. “The things that we were a little worried about were our ball control and our passing, and that did kind of show itself but we were able to work around it. The girls played really well.” Considering the circumstances, starting the season off with a win was no small feat, according to Hamer. “It’s crazy,” Hamer said. “We typically make our season schedule in the spring. I had like 35 games scheduled, then everybody started doing different things because of COVID. We were working out over the summer and the girls didn’t even know if they were going to get to play. It’s hard to stay motivated when you don’t even know if you’re going to have a season, but they did a good job.” UC Clermont plans to have games in both the fall and spring. The contest on Saturday, September 5 was the team’s fall opener. UC Clermont has another home game scheduled for Thursday, September 10th against Midway University. After that contest, the Cougars have nine straight road games before ending the fall with a Wednesday, November 4 contest at home against Saint Mary of the Woods. “The girls worked so hard all summer, I wanted to give them something for the fall,” Hamer said. “A lot of our games that dropped were

rescheduled for the spring.” That has set up a bit of a tougher slate than normal for the Cougars, according to Hamer. “You try to balance games throughout the season, but the only people playing right now are NAIA teams, and we’re kind of playing up a little bit,” Hamer said. “It’s good in the sense it’s going to get us ready for the spring, but it’s a little risky. We don’t want to be in a hole come spring.” Once the spring season comes around, Hamer expects to be facing off against NCAA teams as well as USCAA opponents. But for now, playing games in the fall has a much different offcourt look, from daily temperature checks to face mask usage to limiting the number of players seated per row in the team’s van. On the court, however, several familiar faces are leading the charge this season, starting with Zoe England. England, a Glen Este High School graduate, has earned all-American honors in back-to-back seasons. She missed out on the USCAA player of the year honor by one vote last year (teammate Kelsie Holland won the
award). “[England’s] stronger than ever,” Hamer said. “She looks very good.” She’s joined on the court by Kara Heckmuller, an Oak Hills grad who transferred into the program after spending two seasons at Manchester University in Indiana. Sarah Andrews, a sophomore who earned secondteam all-USCAA honors last season, and fellow sophomore Alaina Smith, another Oak Hills grad, have also worked to take on bigger roles this season. “[Smith] had a good start to her freshman year,” Hamer said. “Over the summer, to now, she’s just much more mature. Smarter, stronger. She’s playing well.” One of the newer players on the team this year isn’t new to fans of Eastern Cincinnati Conference volleyball. Angela Kapitula, a Milford graduate, stepped into a crucial role for the team right away. “She played six rotations for us this weekend,” Hamer said. “We desperately needed an outside who could play six rotations, and she filled that role very well. She’s not your typical fresh-
man by any means. She’s a competitor, she doesn’t have the nerves. She’s going to do great things this year.” That core group of players will look to build through the fall and spring seasons to the team’s ultimate goal: winning a USCAA title. UC Clermont has advanced to the tournament each of the past three seasons, finishing fifth in 2017, fourth in 2018, and third last year. Hamer said this year’s team hopes to skip second place and bring home the trophy. They’ll look to do so with the offense leading the way. “Offensively, this is probably the strongest team I’ve had in my time here at Clermont,” Hamer said. “There’s a big difference between this year and last year.” Hamer concluded by thanking the UC Clermont administration for helping the team figure out a way to compete safely this season. “I’m very appreciative of the administration supporting us, giving us the tools and the protocols to be able to play,” Hamer said. “They’re very supportive of athletics, I’m very appreciative of that.”
Doug Ute selected as next OHSAA Executive Director Submitted by OHSAA. The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors has announced the selection of Doug Ute as the OHSAA’s next Executive Director, making the former coach, teacher, athletic administrator, principal and superintendent the OHSAA’s 11th leader in its 113-year history. Ute is taking the OHSAA post after spending the last 20 years as a school superintendent, including nine years at Marion Elgin Local Schools and the last 11 years at Newark City Schools. He also coached and taught at Noble Local Schools in eastern Ohio and Buckeye Central High School, which is near his hometown of Bellville in north-central Ohio. Last spring, Ute announced that he was stepping down from his post at Newark to become Deputy Director of the Buckeye Association of School Administrators (BASA), which is the state’s superintendent’s association. Instead of serving Ohio schools at BASA, he will be doing so from the OHSAA. He takes over for Interim Executive Director Bob Goldring, who is the OHSAA’s Senior Director of Operations. “I have always thought like a former coach and athletic director, and the OHSAA is where I want to be,” said Ute. “I am humbled to be selected by the Board of Directors for this
position and join a great team at the OHSAA office. We are all aware of the uncertainties that are before us due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but I know that together we can and will be stronger together. My focus has always been on helping students become better people, and athletics are such an important part in that. That is true now more than ever. I can’t wait to get started and help lead our member schools.” At Newark, Ute helped create the Social, Emotional and Academic Success (SEAS) program that includes counselors, teachers and staff to discuss ways to help students succeed in life. While at Newark, a district of 6,500 students, he expanded the free lunch program, made free breakfast available to all students, and put a strong emphasis on student and family social and emotional health. The school district responded with its highest-ever graduation rate and a renewed sense of pride in the city and school district. “We are excited to have someone lead our organization with Doug’s experience, both in working with student-athletes and with his experience in the workings of the OHSAA,” said Jeff Cassella, President of the OHSAA Board of Directors and Athletic Director at Mentor High School. “The Board of Directors is confident that Doug’s leadership style and experience is a

great fit to lead the OHSAA through this unique year.” Ute began his career in 1988 as a basketball coach and part-time business teacher at Noble Local Schools (Shenandoah High School) in Sarahsville in eastern Ohio. He then went to Buckeye Central in New Washington as a teacher and coach, while also serving as the athletic administrator. In 1996 he became the principal at Marion Elgin and then took over as superintendent in 2000 at Elgin, a district of 1,500 students. Ute became superintendent in Newark in 2009. He served on the OHSAA’s Central District
Athletic Board in 2008-09 and has been the Central District’s secretary since the 2011-12 school year. Ute was a standout student-athlete at Clear Fork High School, graduating in 1980, and played basketball at Ashland University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing. He would later return to Ashland to earn a master’s degree in school administration, a graduate teaching degree in business, a principal’s license and a superintendent’s license. Ute and his wife, Kory, have four children and eight grandchildren.
