A new men’s coach will lead Amelia’s Barons BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Sun staff

A new team and a new head coach are gathering at the barony. Rick McMullen, who had previously been the girls head cage taskmaster at Amelia for several years, has now taken over as the head of the boys program. “We have a little bit of speed and shoot the ball pretty decent,” said McMullen, who will be seek-

ing the leadership of his five returning lettermen to help set the squad through its paces. Seven lettermen are gone from last year’s squad. “We have a lot of inexperienced seniors and we don’t have a lot of overall size,” he said. The Blue and White will receive leadership from senior numbertwo guard Austin Hounshell (5feet, 9-inches tall), senior numberthree guard Vernon Harris (5-10)

Tara Kaiser returns to her alma mater to bring back the Amelia varsity girls basketball program to its winning ways, which she experienced during her hall of fame prep career at the barony from where Tara Shepherd graduated in 1987. The former three-sport Queen City Conference all-star, including basketball, welcomes the return of five players who lettered a year ago. A total of six seniors graduated from last year’s contingent. “The team has good speed and good ball-handling talent,” said Kaiser, cautioning, “What we lack is size.” Kaiser will be assisted with her coaching duties by another Amelia High Sports Hall of Fame member, Mark Crouse, a 1982 graduate of AHS where he was a three-sport all-star, including basketball. A couple of standouts are expected to put Amelia through its paces – senior forward Morgan Sperry (5-feet, 8-inches tall) and senior forward Caitlin Cammeresi (5-9). Walnut Hills’ Eagles and Wilmington’s Hurricanes are the teams Kaiser expects to be the best of the teams in the Fort Ancient Valley Conference Cardinal Division chase. “We expect to give a good effort all the time and to be in every game,” Kaiser said. Lady Bulldogs are returning one starter

New coach to lead Williamsburg Wildcats

A lone starter is all Batavia can welcome back from last season’s varsity girls basketball team. That veteran is sophomore guard Holly Harris (5-feet, 7inches tall). “Holly’s our only returning starter so we are going to be a very inexperienced team,” said Beth Wolfer, head coach of the Green and White and a former New Richmond High School athletic letter earner. The Bulldogs’ mentor also expects to receive some fine contributions from senior post player Courtney Turner (5-10). “We’re going to be rebuilding. If we can have a winning season it’ll be a very good thing for us,” said Wolfer. The viewpoint from deep in the heart of Clermont County and the East Fork Valley indicates that Georgetown’s G-Women, Goshen’s Warriors, and Western Brown’s Broncos will be the class of the contenders in the Southern Buckeye Conference. “I think us, Blanchester, and Williamsburg will be important in helping decide the champion (of the National, small school, Division) in what is going to be a balanced race,” Wolfer said.

Dan McKibben is on hand for his first season as the head boys basketball coach at his alma mater where he was a Southern Buckeye Conference all-star on the hardwood in the late 1980s. He has just a trio of players with varsity experience around whom to build his team’s initial drive to returning the program into a winner. “This team has more athletes and more athleticism than its had in recent years,” said McKibben. “Our weakness is that we have one inexperienced senior, two freshmen, and one sophomore on the varsity roster. “What we’re going to be working a lot on is overcoming our inexperience and losing attitude. It’s been so long since we’ve been a winner that it’s going to take a while to redevelop a winning attitude, but these kids can do it.” The triumvirate around whom McKibben expects to lead the rebuilding process will be junior guard Elliott Young (6-feet, 2inches tall), junior number-four wing man Matt Richardson (6-3), and senior guard Jacob Simpson (5-8). “We’re going to go seven or eight deep and still be competitive. “Georgetown (National Division of the Southern Buckeye) and Bethel-Tate (American Division of the Southern Buckeye) have a lot of talent back. In our division Blanchester could be a surprise and possibly Batavia. “Georgetown has tremendous height and good point guards. Bethel has (Louie) Schaljo and (Tyler) Bullock back. “We want to be competitive in every game. We could surprise some teams along the way,” McKibben said.

Lady Wildcats are improving expectations

Ken Lowe returns at the helm of the Williamsburg varsity girls basketball program, a program that is displaying noticeable improvement each year. Helping the ‘Burg taskmaster are five starters. “This team has good chemistry and a good team mix of size and speed,” said Lowe. “The team has a better work ethic and a better understanding of the game this year. The past years the kids have been working to improve the image of girls basketball here at Williamsburg.” The Wildcats’ leader has a total of seven very experienced players from whom to choose his starting line-up. The number of veterans include senior center Darcy Little (5-feet, 10-inches tall), junior forward Samantha Davis (5-10), junior forward Rachel Meisberger (5-9), junior guard Molly Bruns (5-7), senior forward Amy Brown (510), sophomore forward Tara Dennis (5-11), and sophomore guard Heidi McManus (5-4). The first five of that contingent all earned starting roles last year. “One of the girls’ goals this year is to improve people’s outlooks and expectations and get respect about the Williamsburg girls basketball program,” Lowe concluded.

In Clermont’s county seat, just two of the nine Bulldogs who earned letters last year are among those Bulldogs back for another varsity boys basketball campaign. “We have decent size and some decent shooters, but we’re inexperienced. We have inexperienced seniors and we don’t handle the basketball really well,” said Mike Hatfield, head coach of the Green and White. “We should play very physically.” The former Glen Este High School basketball standout has two experienced cagers on whom to rely – senior forward-center Caleb Santel (6-feet, 4-inches tall) and junior center-forward Luke Bradburn (6-3). Hatfield anticipates he will also receive capable assistance on the hardwood from Nolan O’Brien, a 6-2 senior guard-forward. “I expect the league to be very strong,” said Hatfield who expects Goshen’s Warriors, Bethel-Tate’s Tigers, and Clermont Northeastern’s Rockets to be the cream of the crop in the American Division (big-school) chase of the Southern Buckeye Conference. He also believes Western Brown’s Broncos “will be down this year, but still good.” In his own National (smallschool) Division, a “better” Georgetown G-Men and Felicity Cardinals will be in the thick of the race along with Williamsburg’s Wildcats who “have a lot of good, young kids … I expect East Clinton to come along this year, too. “I hope our inexperienced older guys will help us out a lot,” Hatfield said.

BY RICHARD CRAWFORD Bethel-Tate head boys basketball coach Mike Arlinghaus has four seniors and six juniors around whom to build the success of the Fighting Tigers’ campaign. There were six seniors on last year’s team. “This is a pretty experienced team. We have our two leading scorers and rebounders back from last year,” said Arlinghaus. “We’re going to have a pretty balanced offense and we’ll have good team chemistry. “We need to work on taking better care of the basketball. We tend to make too many unforced turnovers.” The scoring and rebounding leaders upon whom the Tigers’ taskmaster is relying are senior forward Louie Schaljo (6-feet, 3inches tall), starting his fourth season on the varsity, junior forward Tyler Bullock (6-3), and senior forward Spencer Sutter (6-4). His coach expects junior point guard Garrett Lang (5-9) to be “improved.” Also in the backcourt will be senior guard Billy Sipos (5-9), a superb defenseman, and the “versatile” senior forward Kevin Poe (6-1). “I know we can improve on our assists to turnovers ratio this year,” said Arlinghaus. He said Goshen and his charges should be in the forefront of the Southern Buckeye Conference American Division run for the title. “It should be a two-horse race,” he said. “CNE could be a dark horse and then we’ll also have to watch out for New Richmond and Western Brown. “We’d like to win our side of the league and win the sectional title and get the opportunity to play in a college arena.” All-Stars Returning Louie Schaljo and Bullock.

Brad Hatfield is beginning his second season as the head coach of the New Richmond varsity girls basketball team. The Red and Black is still in a rebuilding process as the former Felicity High School and Southern State Community College basketball standout carefully guides the NRHS return to distaff basketball success. New Richmond has just two letter earners back from the 2008-09 campaign. Seven of last year’s veterans are not returning. “We should be really good with the talent of the players we have in the post,” Hatfield said. “They’re playing really well as a team and they’re ready to make the sacrifices that will be needed.” He cautioned, “We have some really young, inexperienced players on the team.” The Lions’ head honcho pointed out his top cagers in the post position will be junior Reno Frayne (5-feet, 10-inches tall) and junior Lindsey Blankenship (6-1), a transfer from McNicholas High School. Hatfield expects his charges’ toughest competition in the Southern Buckeye Conference to be provided by Western Brown’s Broncos in the American Division and Georgetown’s G-Women in the National Division. An exciting season should be ahead for New Richmond’s varsity boys basketball squad. The new team welcomes a new head coach, Brian McMonigle, one of the Lions’ and University of Cincinnati Clermont College’s alltime cage greats. He has five returning lettermen with whom to pace the Red and Black in their quest of the Southern Buckeye Conference American (big school) Division title. Four lettermen graduated. “This team has speed and some size and I expect them to be good rebounders and to be defensively strong,” said McMonigle. “We’re going to have to get stronger and work on our offensive fundamentals and transition game.” A tough twosome to lead the Lions is expected to be senior post Dylan Phillips (6-feet, 6-inches tall) and senior guard Brian Mazzaro (5-10). “I hope to establish good precedents with this team and bring some of its outstanding past into the present and future,” McMonigle said. He figures his toughest Southern Buckeye Conference opposition in the Lions’ American Division will be Goshen’s Warriors and BethelTate’s Tigers. “It’s been a lot of work and it has been a lot of fun. I want to bring this program to the best it can be as soon as I can,” McMonigle said.

Five of the nine girls who earned varsity letters a year ago return for another season of hardcourt action led by head coach Dave Fallis. “We don’t have a lot of height and size, but we have good team speed so we’re going to have to run with the ball to use that speed to our advantage,” Fallis said, adding, “Defense will be a team strength for us this year, too.” The Red and Gray has experienced talent in the quartet of junior post player Brooke Kenneda (5-foot, 9-inches tall), senior guard Emily Vanderpool (5-5), sophomore forward Cyra Jones (5-9), and sophomore guard Carolin Baker (5-4). “These girls are hungry to win,” said their coach. “We won six games last year and this team is looking forward to winning a double digit number of games.” From the Bethel-Tate perspective, Western Brown’s Broncos and Goshen’s Warriors are expectd to be the best in the Tigers’ American Division of the Southern Buckeye Conference and in the National Division, Georgetown’s G-Women should be the team to beat. Felicity Cardinals to have a rebuilding season BY RICHARD CRAWFORD

There will be a total of four varsity basketball lettermen coming back for another season under Felicity boys basketball head coach Damon Smith, himself, a former Cardinal cage standout from the early-mid 1970s. “We’re going to be rebuilding this year. We graduated four of our players from last year’s team so we’re going to be lacking a lot of experience and experienced leadership,” Smith said. “We have no experienced guards. We’re hoping for soon to be developing some experienced guards. We do have a lot of height, though.” Experienced under the basket will be senior forward Chris Shouse (6-feet, 3-inches tall) and senior forward Tyler Carter (6-4). An inexperienced big man under the board will be senior Dustin Gillam (6-5). Smith expects solid play to come from senior guard and wing Dillon Smith (5-9) and junior guard and wing Matt O’Brien (6-2). Smith expects the cream of the crop in the Southern Buckeye Conference championship chases will be Georgetown’s G-Men and possibly beyond that, Batavia’s Bulldogs, in the American Division, and Bethel-Tate’s Tigers and Goshen’s Warriors should be best of the best in the American Division. “I don’t know where we’ll fit yet in the league,” Smith said.

Goshen head girls basketball coach Shane Ferguson has a good nucleus of five letter earners back to build his season around. Six are gone. “Defense should be one of our strengths this year and the girls have a good understanding of the game,” said Ferguson. He pointed out his charges’ low point is “we’re not very tall.” Leading the Warriors in their quest for success will be senior Brooke Catauro (5-feet, 7-inches tall), senior post player Synthia Shinkle (5-9), and sophomore point guard Kelsi Steele (5-3). “We have a good mix of upper classmen and lower classmen on this team,” said Ferguson. “We’ll be competitive every day and this team will play its best and do its best every day. “It’s going to be a tough league. Western Brown and Bethel-Tate should be the best of the teams in our division of the league. We will be competitive.”

Returning varsity players to give Warriors a boost

Cardinals’ coach expects a 10-10 season

Scott Wake very happily welcomes the return of nine of the 11 Goshen varsity boys basketball players he lettered a year ago “We have four starters back who are good upperclassmen with good size. We’re also lucky enough to have five senior leaders,” said Wake. “We do have some shooters, but we’re not super quick.” The Red and Gray has some very good talent the likes of senior forward Thomas Gibson (6-feet, 1-inch tall), senior guard Derek Bunnell (6-1), senior guard Nate Godby (6-1), junior guard Nick Wake (5-8), the coach’s son, and junior center Kody Lehman (611). Lehman is believed to be the tallest high school varsity basketball player in Clermont County history. “We can be pretty good. This will be a good opportunity win the league (Southern Buckeye American Division) championship. Bethel-Tate, Clermont Northeastern and New Richmond are Wake’s choices for whom he thinks will provide the toughest competition for his charges’ road to the crown. “We’ll be very competitive. We can beat anyone on our schedule,” he said.

Toby Lewin is returning for his second season at the helm of the Felicity varsity girls basketball program. The former cross country state qualifier from New Richmond High School has seven players “with some varsity experience.” Three letter earners are lost. “We have some speed and I expect that we’ll be playing some good team defense,” said Lewin. He cautioned that his team is “still young.” The roster consists of two seniors, two juniors, and six sophomores. A foursome of Cardinals are anticipated to be the leaders of this momentum-building team – senior forward Amber McCann (5-feet, 11-inches tall), junior forward Alex Stevenson (5-10), sophomore guard Hillary White (5-0), and sophomore guard Megan Obermeyer (5-2). “We look to be improved,” said the Cards’ coach. “I’d like to think we can go 10-10. We are conditioning harder this year in order that we can play hard all four quarters this year.” Lewin believes his team can give Georgetown’s G-Women and Williamsburg’s Wildcats a run for the gold and that Blanchester’s Wildcats, too, may be a factor in the Southern Buckeye Conference National Division distaff cage war.

Dave Caldwell, Glen Este head boys basketball coach, is excited about his charges’ prospects for the coming campaign. He has five of the eight cagers he lettered last season on hand to continue the work. “We have size, experience, and depth,” Caldwell said. “We have a lot of kids back who are familiar with our program already.” Some of the tall, talented GE veterans include senior forward Kurt Wesp (6-feet, 7-inches tall), junior forward Mike Bouley (6-7), junior guard Shane Seckman (64), and junior guard Corey Goedde (6-2). There are nine juniors on the Purple and White’s roster, and Caldwell says, “This is a really good class and really good kids. This is one of those years where our size could take us to the (Fort Ancient Valley) conference (Cardinal Division) championship.” The Trojan taskmaster believes Winton Woods’ Warriors and Milford’s Eagles will be the major headaches in the Purple and White’s quest to be the FAVC-C best. “I’d like to think we have a chance of having a really good season and a winning a championship,” Caldwell said. “I am just so excited. I expect us to have a nice year.
