Lady Warriors looking for 13th straight SHL title
Experience should pay off for Western Broncos CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13 The Broncos will be playing with a new point guard this year, and Williams hopes that good decision-making will be par for the course. “We need someone to make good decisions and take care of the ball,” said Williams. “We have kids who can score, but we need to be strong with the ball and execute offensively. We must get guys used to playing in the team concept.” In the SBC American Division, Williams sees the race for the top

By Ritchie Butler The Brown County Press The Eastern Lady Warriors will be looking for their 13th consecutive Southern Hills League title under new direction this season. Gone is longtime coach Richard Kiser. Taking Kiser’s place at the helm is his former assistant, John Burrows. “We’re not going to vary too much from what we’ve been doing,” said Burrows. “I’ve coached these girls since they were freshmen. They stick together and are good kids. They get along really well.” The Lady Warriors lost two seniors from a team that finished 16-6 and won the SHL big division title a year ago. Returning for another season on the hardwood are seniors Shayla Black, Andrea Neu, Amber Yockey, Christina Burns, Emily Tatman, Haley Malott, Lauren Ballou and Leeza Rickey along with junior Allison Prine. New to full-time varsity play are juniors Haylee Neu and Andrea Tracy along with sophomores Maria Johnson and Tressie Lewis. The Lady Warriors’ strengths should be depth and experience along with a good mix of perimeter and interior play. “Amber did not play a whole lot last year due to injury,” said Burrows. “She’ll make a difference. Allison returns at the point.” “We’re quick and have some good perimeter players. We also have some size. Christina has played well this summer. I am pleased.” In the early going, Eastern is working hard on half-court defense and offensive execution. “Our half-court defense can be better,” said Burrows. “We also need to be more crisp on offense.

We should be there competing for another league title.” In the small division, which Eastern will play each opponent once, Burrows thinks all teams will be improved. “Fayetteville should be good and Fairfield will be okay, even with their lost players,” said Burrows. “Manchester has some

being a tough one. “Clermont Northeastern has everybody back,” said Williams. “Bethel has two good players back. Goshen has a good point guard. I think we can be right in the hunt.” Although the Broncos do not have one standout big player inside, they can go with a big lineup at times. “We have some options to make size overall,” said Williams. “We can go big on the perimeter. We have depth, so we will be able to mix it up. We have competition at each position for the first time.”
Rebounding is a concern, as it always is, but the Broncos held their own last season when undersized against most opponents. “I am hoping we will still be able to crash the boards,” said
Williams. “We will play up-tempo if we can. Rebounding and defense will lead to that.” In non-league competition, the Broncos will face Glen Este, Harrison, Amelia, Hillsboro, East Clinton, Blanchester and ClintonMassie. The Broncos will also play in the Brown County Tournament. “If we can be efficient and smart with the ball, we’ll look good.” The Broncos host Ripley in a Foundation Game on Dec. 1, and open the regular season at home versus Hillsboro on Dec. 4.

By Ritchie Butler The Brown County Press The Western Broncos wrestling team returns two experienced seniors in Tory Bauer and Justin Dillinger, but second-year coach Wendel Donathan will rely on a host of new wrestlers to fill out this year’s team. “We didn’t get a lot of wrestlers back from last year,” said Donathan. “But our two seniors should be gearing up for good seasons.” Bauer is No. 7 on the all-time Western win list, was a state-qualifier two years ago, and has been Southern Buckeye conference
champ for three years. Dillinger won the SBC last season and was a district qualifier in 2009-2010. “Justin has put in the time to get better this off season,” said Donathan. “Tory was a little disappointed with not making it back to state last year, so he will be motivated. They are both great kids.” Although experience is down, the number of wrestlers throughout the program is increasing. The Broncos have seven freshman on this year’s team and the younger kids are coming in to wrestle as well. “I am really excited about our

Our goal every year is to win it.” The Broncos open the season at Loveland on Dec. 10.
The Eastern Warriors, under the direction of 16-year coach Rob Beucler, are looking for ways to fill the void of losing seven seniors off a team that finished 185 and captured Southern Hills League, sectional and district titles last year. “We lost a lot,” said Beucler. “It’s hard to tell where we’ll go. We did get some of those young kids in last year and that will help.” Returning for the Warriors this season are senior Clint Black, juniors Brett Stout and Jordan Payne and sophomore Chase Lawson. “Jordan is the only player back with experience,” said Beucler. “He’s a good shooter and will have to be a leader. He will need to be our primary scorer.” “Brett will probably start. He gives us some quickness and has worked on his game this summer.” “Chase played at the end of last year. He may still split time between junior varsity and varsity.” As always, the Warriors will be strong defensively. Shooting should also be a strength of this year’s team. “We need to develop a good mental attitude,” said Beucler. Eastern also lacks overall size, which makes rebounding a concern in the early going. “We also must show patience offensively,” added Beucler. In the big school division of the SHL, Beucler sees Ripley as the team to beat. “Ripley has everybody back and a lot of weapons,” said Beucler. “They also have good depth. North Adams is young. We always have Lynchburg to worry about.” In the small division, Beucler sees Peebles, Manchester and Fairfield competing for the top spot. “Overall, the league is pretty
good and will be very competitive,” added Beucler. On the non-league slate, Eastern faces the likes of Alexander, South Point, Georgetown, Hillsboro and plays in the Brown County Tournament. “We have a tough schedule,” said Beucler. “This is probably
one of the youngest teams I’ve had. How we grow will determine where we go.” The Warriors open the season Dec. 4, when they take on Alexander at Zane Trace in the Tipoff Classic.

FHS Lady Rockets shooting for another SHL title
Experience should pay off for Western Broncos By Ritchie Butler The Brown County Press
Toby Sheets
By Ritchie Butler The Brown County Press The Fayetteville Lady Rockets are hoping to continue their dominance of the Southern Hills League small school division and claim their fourth consecutive title under coach Toby Sheets, who enters his 23rd season at the helm. “Numbers are up,” said Sheets. “We have 23 players on junior varsity and varsity, which makes for a competitive attitude.” Experience will be a definite benefit for this year’s Lady Rockets team who finished 16-6 last year, won the SHL, and lost only one senior to graduation. “Four returning starters brings a bunch of leadership and experience,” added Sheets. Key players returning for Fayetteville include seniors Shelby Sheets, Jill Ryan, Desiree Dutro and Emily Stahl along with sophomore point guard Ashley Scoggins. Shelby Sheets averaged 18.2 points per game and 7.1 assists per game last year. She is also just 517 points shy of the school’s all-time scoring record and 66 assists shy of the all-time mark. Shelby was also the District 16 Division II player of the year last season. Dutro, who will play in the post, averaged 9.2 points per game last

year. Shelby Sheets, Dutro, Ryan and Stahl were all starters a year ago. In addition to returning five players with considerable experience, the Lady Rockets will also feature juniors Brianna Plapp and Amanda O’Donnell, sophomores Cheyenne Ramey and Abbey Rowe along with freshmen newcomers Megan Eyre and Makayla Rosselot. “Adding Makayla has already been beneficial,” said Sheets. “She brings outside shooting, ball-handling and aggressive defense to an already solid lineup.”

In addition to experience, the Lady Rockets should also have tremendous depth. “I think I will be able to trust more than just six or seven players this year,” said Sheets. “Which may be a little different than in years past.” Fayetteville, with a good balance of speed, quickness and size, will use combinations of full-court and half-court defenses to force fast play. “We have pushed the ball in the preseason and will continue pushing the pace throughout the regular season,” said Sheets. “Abbey will help with that fast pace.” In the SHL, Sheets sees the big division coming down to two teams. “Eastern will be very strong,” said Sheets. “North Adams, although they lost Beasley, has a lot returning and should be good.” In the small division, Sheets thought Manchester, Fairfield and Peebles would be good. He also thought Whiteoak would be improved. “We should compete for the top spot in our division,” added Sheets. On the non-league schedule, Fayetteville will face Felicity, Williamsburg, Batavia, Bethel, Hillsboro, and will play in the Brown County Tournament.

Lady Broncos trying to overcome heavy losses
Rockets know team play the key to successful year By Ritchie Butler The Brown County Press

The Western Lady Broncos are trying to overcome heavy losses from last year’s Southern Buckeye Conference champions. They will do so under the direction of firstyear coach John Kirschner. “I appreciate the opportunity to coach here at Western,” said Kirschner. “I am excited about practice each day and I’m having a great time. We have a great staff and get all kinds of support. there is a lot of pride here.” The first task is trying to replace six players lost to graduation off a team that finished first in the SBC with an overall mark of 17-4. Kirschner, who coached the freshmen team last season, returns senior Danika Ratcliff, juniors Morgan Wright and Elizabeth Carter and sophomores Kylie Garrett and Delayne Seigla. New to full-time varsity play are seniors Calleigh Olson and Kayla Barger, junior Brittany Palmer, along with sophomores Hannah Wiesenhahn and Ty Henry. “We are young and inexperienced,” said Kirschner. “We need them to grow up quick. They have struggled, but improved, in the preseason.” Look for the Lady Broncos to play man-to-man defense and have a balanced offensive attack. “We haven’t changed a lot from last year, save a few wrinkles,” said Kirschner. “They play well together. They are tight-knit and understand team play. They accept their roles very well.” Western has a lot of young talent, so expect the Lady Broncos to have good balance offensively. “We can score, but we need the balance,” said Kirschner. “We have many threats on offense. The young kids are talented and very deep, but we must get them experience. Danika and the two juniors provide strong leadership. Calleigh leads by working hard. She can be a shut-down defender.”

The Fayetteville Rockets are hoping to build on last year’s strong finish by using defense and team play. Gone from last year’s 8-15 team are five players who accounted for most of the scoring and ball-handling duties. Returning for fourth-year coach Darryl Iles are seniors Zach Durham and Miah Call, along with junior Trevor Clark and sophomore Nick Durham. Iles. “They are wanting to be here and they show up to work,” said Iles. “They are really good at playing as a team. That’s what we’ll need. We also need the ball to fall for us this season.” Expect the Rockets to utilize their depth, quickness, defense and speed to be successful. In the early going, Fayetteville has been working on getting quality shots. Because of a lack of size, the

Rockets are also concentrating on rebounding. Look for the Rockets to use a variety of defenses and offenses, depending on the opponent. “We’ve been working in a little bit of everything,” said Iles. “We’re getting a good grasp of our offense.” According to the Rockets’ coach, the Southern Hills League will be tough. “Peebles still has a lot of players,” said Iles. “Manchester has Blevins, Fairfield has Cox and Whiteoak has Michael. We don’t have a standout, so we’ll have to work together.” In the big division, Iles sees Ripley as the team to beat. “Ripley has everybody back,” said Iles. “Eastern lost a lot, but they always play hard.”

Lady G-Men depth may lead to 11th-straight title By Ritchie Butler The Brown County Press The Georgetown Lady G-Men are vying for their 11th consecutive Southern Buckeye National
Division title this year and depth may be the key to success for 15year coach Bernie Cropper. “We have good depth,” said Cropper. “All 10 kids can play and we have experience.”
Back from last year’s 22-2 SBC and sectional champions are seniors Kirsten Grant, Amanda Jelley and Hannah Zurbuch, juniors Casey Carter and Hannah Jones along with sophomores Jesse Kidwell and
Madison Pack. “Kirsten is a good athlete and tremendous post player who will open up the perimeter with her inside play,” said Cropper. “Amanda is in her fourth year running the point. She is a leader and is working hard to get back to 100 percent. Zurbuch is a good shooter and has improved her defense and ball-handling skills.” “Carter is in her third season. She is talented, is a good shooter and passer. She was also player of the year in the National Division. Jones is our best post defender and a good post player offensively.” “Kidwell will play inside and out. She is one of our most improved players. Pack is a good athlete who is quick and a good defender.”

Blue Jays hoping experience, depth will lift them
Mike Kennedy
By Ritchie Butler The Brown County Press The Ripley Blue Jays are loaded with experienced players this season. That experience and depth is what 12th-year coach Mike Kennedy is counting on to propel the Jays to a league title. “I feel like we really have eight or nine players with varsity experience,” said Kennedy. “Five of them have a lot.” The Blue Jays lost three players to graduation off a team that finished second in the Southern Hill League with an overall mark of 13-9. Returning from that team are seniors Jay Woodruff, Jarrin Taul, Ravye Williams and DeMarco Washington, juniors Jordan Mitchell, Riley Saelens, Jesse Prince, Michael Haley and Logan perkins. New to the mix are seniors Michael Fegan, Jordan Zweigart, Johnathan Kessel and Timmy Whaley, along with sophomore Donte Bennett. Look for the Jays to use their quickness, athleticism, shooting, depth and experience on the court. “We should be able to get after it defensively,” said Kennedy. “We have depth and experience, which should help.” In the early going, the Ripley squad is working on patience, making good decisions, rebounding and taking care of the ball. “We need more patience at times,” said Kennedy. “We’re working on making the extra pass. We’re still not big, so rebounding is a concern.” In the SHL, Kennedy sees North Adams and Eastern as the teams to beat. “Hopefully, we’ll be right up there somewhere,” added Kennedy. The veteran coach also sees Peebles, Manchester and Fairfield as being very “tough.” The Blue Jays have a formidable non-league schedule. They are

The Ripley Lady Blue Jays are young this season and the new players must develop rapidly in order for the team to have success. “We have to grow up quick,” said third-year coach Chris Coleman. “We lost a lot of scoring and rebounding to graduation. We need some of the younger kids to step up and fill that void.” Gone are four senior starters from a team that finished 10-11 last season. Returning are seniors Sadie Grisham and Kelsey Carpenter, along with sophomores Niya Royal and Tori Boone. New to full-time varsity play are sophomores Shayla Henderson, Jessica Garrison, Taylor Fyffe and Kody Gilkerson, along with freshmen Kelci Bowling and Jaden Royal. “We have some quickness in the back court,” said Coleman. “We are going to try to get into transition.” In the early going, the Lady Jays are struggling defensively. “We must get better on defense,” said Coleman. “We also need better shot selection. We have to get better at rebounding.” Look for the Lady Jays to mix things up defensively and use their quickness to their advantage. “We’re going to try to mix it up and do some different things on defense,” said Coleman. “We are going to try to develop some depth

They are

Lady Broncos trying to overcome heavy losses
Rockets know team play the key to successful year By Ritchie Butler The Brown County Press

O D D P A G E S

New to the varsity team are seniors Chad Evans and Jordan Schmidt, juniors Derek Peters, David Kranz, Michael Kranz and Tanner Williams, sophomore R.J. Workman and freshman D.J. Iles. “They are wanting to be here and they show up to work,” said Iles. “They are really good at playing as a team. That’s what we’ll need. We also need the ball to fall for us this season.” Expect the Rockets to utilize their depth, quickness, defense and speed to be successful.

She is also just 517 points shy of the school’s all-time scoring record and 66 assists shy of the all-time mark.

The Western Broncos spent last season building a team underclassmen in hopes that this season they could reap the benefits. Last year’s Broncos finished 10-11 overall, 8-6 in the Southern Buckeye Conference and graduated no seniors. Returning to varsity play for third-year coach Doug Williams are seniors Cole Kirkpatrick, Kyle Puckett, Dylan Dawson, Craig Naylor and Jon Walker, along with juniors Justin Nickell, Spencer Howard, Nick Woodyard, Corey Carroll, Zach Siemer and Hiro Purdin. “Last year we spent working on individual defense,” said Williams. “This year we must work on team defense and team offense. Our depth and experience should help us do that.” New to the varsity team are juniors Sean Massey and Josh Massey. “We have talent,” said Williams. “We must put it all together.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

“I am really excited about our

program,” said Donathan. “Junior high numbers are up. The youth program is coming along. the kids are eager to learn and are working hard.” In the SBC, Donathan sees New Richmond as the team to beat. “New Richmond won the league last year and returns a lot of young wrestlers,” said Donathan. “We will make it interesting in the league.
He has a lot of talent and will

York and Sharp will need to provide leadership and give us good minutes off the bench.” “Belcher and Faul will see some time and need to give us good defense.” “Boudreau is very athletic and has worked this summer.

John Burrows

“The kids have worked hard. We’re looking forward to getting things going.” -John Burrows We are also working on conditioning to help our depth and prevent possible injuries.” The first-year head coach thinks the Southern Hills League will be competitive. “North Adams and Lynchburg are tough year after year,” said Burrows. “Their kids play pretty hard. We should be there competing for another league title.” In the small division, which Eastern will play each opponent once, Burrows thinks all teams will be improved. “Fayetteville should be good and Fairfield will be okay, even with their lost players,” said Burrows. “Manchester has some

experience and could give everybody trouble.” The Lady Warriors open the season the day after Thanksgiving when they travel to Paint Valley to take on Athens. Other non-league opponents include McClain, St. Patrick, Georgetown, and in the Brown County Tournament, Fayetteville and possibly Western Brown. “The kids have worked hard,” said Burrows. “We’re looking forward to getting things going.”

being a tough one.
