Former Ripley resident, William Coffer, Jr. receives Congressional Gold Medal

Yavonne Kemp/THE BROWN COUNTY PRESS

William Coffer, Jr. grew up in Ripley and graduated in 1948 from Ripley High School and immediately joined the United States Marines. On August 18, 2019, Coffer was presented with the Congressional Gold Medal Award.

BY Martha Jacob The Village of Ripley has yet another resident who has made American history. Former resident and Ripley graduate William Coffer, Jr. was presented with the Congressional Gold Medal on Sunday, August 18 during a special ceremony held at the Greater Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Coffer is the son of William Sr. and Sally (Rankin) Coffer and grew up in the Village of Ripley, graduating from Ripley High School. “This was a wonderful honor for my father,” said Cassandra Coffer, daughter of William Coffer, Jr. My brother Pierre

and I are all very proud of our father and the ceremony was really moving. Yavonne Kemp is a reporter for the Milwaukee Courier, a weekly newspaper, and the following includes excerpts from her story..... ... “Mr. William Coffer, Jr, received the Congressional Gold Medal for being one of the first African Americans to enlist in the military during times of segregation. Many consider Coffer to be a true American hero, and as such, he received the nation’s highest civilian honor. During a ceremony held at Greater Galilee Missionary Baptist Church on August 18, Coffer celebrated along

with friends, family and other veterans. Keeping his remarks brief, Coffer said he was honored to serve his country, he’s proud of the legacy he left as a Marine and he hopes other marines who follow in his foot-steps will continue to hold themselves to a similar standard of service.” The Ripley native enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1948 right out of high school at the age of 18. He served his basic training in Montford Point then in 1949 was assigned to Parris Island, S.C. He went on to serve in Pusan, Korea and went from Private 1st Class, to Corporal, to Sergeant to Staff Ser-

geant. He was honorably discharged from the USMC in 1952. William received his Bachelor’s/Business Administration in 1967 from Marquette University, and attended Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1953. “My father would often recite the Marine motto which says...”We fight for the right to fight,” Cassandra Coffer said in a phone interview. “He believed that motto his entire life. He also believed that all men and women are created equal. My dad is 89 now, but he is as sharp and sincere a man as I’ve ever known. This recognition of my dad was well deserved.”

When the Sardinia Fire Department disbanded and the newly formed Eastern Joint Fire & EMS District (EJFED) took over in May of 2018, the Sardinia Fire Department Inc. vowed to continue to support the new joint district, according to Tina Townes. Townes, a current Sar-

dinia council member also sits on the board of the EJFED. “The Sardinia Fire Department, Inc. organized in 1951,” Townes explained. “The organization plans on helping the new fire district any way it can.” The Sardinia Fire Department, Inc., a non-profit organization, is sponsoring a Chili/Spaghetti Dinner

set for Saturday, Oct. 12 at the fire department station, 169 Winchester Street in Sardinia. This event will run from 4 to 8 p.m. and everyone is invited to attend. “We will depend on free will donations,” Townes said, “ and the proceeds will go to the EJFED to help them purchase new equipment and other items

People walk or run for various reasons. Whether it is exercise or out of necessity, safety should be a primary concern. That is why the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding both pedestrians and motorists that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility. “Pedestrians and motorists each have an important role in safety,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “Through education and increased awareness, we can prevent tragedies before they occur.” Of all pedestrian-related crashes, 82 percent occurred in urban areas, while the remaining 18 percent happened in rural areas. Forty percent of fatal crashes involving a pedestrian occurred in rural areas. “The Patrol reminds both pedestrians and motorists that safety is everyone’s responsibility,” said Lieutenant Randy McElfresh, Georgetown Post Commander. “Follow pedestrian signs and signals, always be aware of your surroundings and watch for traffic to ensure you are seen.” Pedestrians and motorists can follow these tips to increase pedestrian
