Irene Holbrook turns 100 BY Marty Cornelison On April 5th, 1920 Irene Holbrook was the first child born to Otis Hatton and Stella Hatton in Hazard, Kentucky. Around four years old Irene contracted polio. She survived and recovered fully except for some impairment to her right leg. That was Irene’s only experience with illness for decades. According to her daughter Carol, Irene made it to age 98 without ever getting sick or taking medicine. Shortly after the stock market crashed, the coal mine where Otis Hatton worked was closed and the whole family moved from Kentucky to Adams County, Ohio. Experiences from living through the Great Depression and the historic flooding of 1937 shaped Irene for the rest of her life, and she tells stories of what it was like to her friends and family members to this day. Irene remembers that some of her relatives traveling with her came to Ohio in a covered wagon. She was ten years old. Irene stopped going to school after 8th grade because she didn’t have enough money to buy school clothes. At home in Adams County, she helped her parents with housework and with her two younger brothers, Stoner and Herbert. Herbert still lives in Portsmouth. As an adult, Irene took a variety of jobs including working at the historic Pants Factory in Hillsboro

and waitressing. She also spent some time living in Alabama and Florida, which remained one of her favorite places to vacation throughout her life. The ocean came to her in 1937, and she has enjoyed visiting the ocean ever since. With her first husband, Mose Workman, she had three children: Edna, Carol, and Mose Jr. Irene’s second husband, Luther Holbrook, passed away last year. Irene Holbrook’s legacy includes six branches of five generations of which she is very proud. Her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren number 34. It is with her large family that she likes to play her favorite games such as Aggravation and poker. The Brown County Press determines it necessary to publish that Irene knows how to play poker to protect oth-

ers from her favorite ruse: convincing players that she is a beginner, and then taking their money. When asked about the secret to a long life, Irene may reply “I take a drink of whiskey every day.” Indeed, she prefers to have a small shot of Seagram’s 7 straight from the bottle to “clear her throat” once a day. She may be on to something, Irene lived on her own for nearly 18 years, crocheting, painting, fishing, cooking, playing the piano, and actively enjoying her many hobbies. At the age of one century, she now lives in the Close to Home community in Sardinia. Happy birthday, Irene! The Press would like to thank her daughter, Carol Mitchell, for sharing Irene’s story.
