Drill: Safety changes implemented before the school does another drill
Continued from page 1
participating in the drill to rush toward the one other door they could see. “There were too many people trying to exit through one door. Staff members were attempting to direct students to other exits, but since the exit was not visible only about 60 students followed to an alternate exit,” Lilly explained in an email. Several students were treated in the school clinic after they had been bumped into or pushed to the floor, and one female seventhgrade student was taken to the emergency room at Cincinnati Children’s Hos-
pital and treated for an undescribed — due to privacy issues — injury and later released to her home. While Lilly was “disappointed” with the reaction he saw in the cafeteria during the drill, he said that sentiment was not shared with students by school staff. “I made an announcement immediately following the drill for the teachers to debrief with their classes . . . . This is a common procedure for us and is always great conversation. Students ask questions and offer suggestions that help us in future drills,” Lilly said.
Dr. Diane Bartholomew, vice president of academic affairs for Missouri Valley College, has announced the Fall 2019 Dean's List. The requirements for the Dean's List are a 3.3 or higher grade point average;
at least 12 graded hours for the semester and no "D," "F," or "Incomplete" grades for the semester. The following student from the area was named to the Dean's List:
The New Richmond Exempted Village School District began running the ALICE drills in its schools shortly after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, and this was the second drill that the middle school has held this school year; the first drill was held in September 2019. All 550 students in the middle school participate in the drills. Recognizing that the middle! school students were in a “new” building — the former New Richmond Elementary School — due to the school district’s recent consolidation and downsizing plan, Lilly said that, “We had an assembly
with each grade level within the first two weeks of school to inform them what an ALICE drill looked like in this building.” Lilly also explained that no notification is given ahead of a drill, because, “It completely compromises how students and adults behave, and the drills are not authentic.” Rather, parents are notified after an ALICE drill has happened. As school officials look ahead to how future drills are run at the school, Lilly and his team are reflecting on what went wrong during this last drill, and making changes to address those areas.
“As the administrator of this building it is my responsibility to ensure that all my kids are safe, and I unfortunately have to continue to do these types of drills,” Lilly said. “I am happy that we did the drill in our cafeteria because it demonstrated that we are not fully prepared to handle a crisis in that environment. He added, “We have already made some changes that will be put in place before we have another drill. We will have emergency exit signs clearly posted so students know where all exits are located, we will walk every student through the cafeteria evacuation procedure in smaller groups
so that all students have experienced the path to every exit, [and] we are working with our students to ensure they understand what it means to cooperatively evacuate our facility instead of running over the person in front of them to get out more quickly.” The school is also considering adding a third lunch period to the schedule to decrease the number of students in the cafeteria at any one time. New Richmond Middle School does not have another ALICE drill scheduled at this time. “We need to have time to implement some of these new procedures,” Lilly said.
