Hard to believe summer is almost over and we are just a week away from Pumpkin Run time. We have a great show in the work’s starting with our large Swap meet. During the year a lot of people comment on the variety of parts they find there. Our vendor area was a little off last year due to a run on the coast, but I think they will all be back for this year. The craft building is booked from year to year with a variety of good stuff from home made candy and pastries to jewelry and every thing in between. One lady at the Street Rod Nationals told me that she did her Christmas shopping in the craft building. The main event is the car show itself and with good weather we hope for a record crowd. For car entries, the big prize is a 1934 Ford 3 window coupe. The couple that won last years car has stayed in touch. The car is running but will not be at this year’s show. It still needs paint and a few other things. Should be there in 2020. To go with the give-a-way car there is a split the pot each day, a bean supper on Saturday, coffee and doughnuts on Sunday. A DJ Friday night and a live band Saturday night. How can you turn all that down? Join us starting October 4th and be part of the show. Fastiques Rod & Custom President

Fastiques supports local charities The Fastiques was able to present various charities checks to help their causes. This would not have been possible without the support of all the many spectators and participants of the Pumpkin Run. In 2018, the club presented the following checks: $4500 to Honor Flight Tristate

$4500 to Earth Angel Foundation of Ohio

$4500 to Hillbilly Clan #5 $1500 to St. Rita

$1000 to Saul's Homeless Shelter $65,000 to Shriner's Hospital for Children of Cincinnati.

With the 2018 contribution to Shriners, we have donated more than $1,205,000 to our local Shriners in Cincinnati to help those kids with medical concerns. Again, this is in whole to those that support what we do during the Pumpkin Run.

Passing down a

PASSION FOR FIXING CARS

Megan alley Sun RepoRteR

We inherit many things from our parents, such as physical features or traits, and some children inherit a career passion. Patrick Wethington, 17, of the village of Batavia, is one of those kids. He's studying automotive collision at Great Oaks Career Campuses because his father, Ricky Wethington, a mechanic, inspired Patrick to also want to work on cars. “I always grew up around cars, my dad was a mechanic his whole life, and I grew up working on cars with him,” Patrick said. “He was also into older cars, so I went to a lot of car shows with him. We knew a lot of people who were into cars, and that, slowly, was what built my love for cars.” Patrick is a high school senior and in his second year of studying auto collision at Great Oaks. He is also interested in studying automotive mechanics. Patrick, who has five siblings, fondly remembers spending time with his father working on cars. “I was always around my dad,” he shared. “Whenever he was home, I was right by his side, and he was always outside in the garage, so I'd go out there and I'd start working with him, handing him tools, and then I eventually started wanting to follow in his footsteps career wise. That's what he did for a living, and that's what I wanted to do.”

8 • 44 TH Pumpkin Run Nationals

Patrick was the only one of his siblings who wanted to pursue a career in the automotive field. “I always planned on going to [the] Live Oaks [campus], and vocational school, because I wanted to go to be a mechanic,” Patrick explained. “Dad really wanted to see me try body work, and then I slowly started looking into it, and I got interested in it, but he's always wanted to get me into working on cars.” All those years of working alongside his father have given Patrick the confidence to follow his passion for cars, and a skill for repairing them. “If there's a dent or something in a car, I just kind of go through my head and think about how to fix it,” he said. “If I hear a noise from a car, like something’s broken, I kind of think about what could be causing it.” While Patrick is training to work on all types of cars, he admits he has an affinity for older cars, a love that was passed down from his father, and from occasional visits to the annual Pumpkin Run. “I feel like it's a chance to look back into the past; it's history. I enjoy older cars; they're easier to work on, I like the way they look, and they're a lot simpler than newer cars; they're different,” he said. Ricky even gave Patrick his own classic car; a 1973 Dodge Challenger that Ricky bought from a customer some 22 years ago. “[The car] was pretty rough … we worked on it here and there, and the car just kind of sat there,” Patrick explained. “When I went into Live Oaks, he ended up giving the car to me, for me to fix up at

school and put my money into it, and so I've been working on it at school and getting it painted, and replacing stuff.” While some may underappreciate the value of choosing a trade career, Patrick is well educated in the benefits that an education and job in a vocational field can bring. “I feel like people think trades are a bad thing to get into because they feel that you should go and get a college degree, when there's plenty of people making really good money working on cars, and there's nothing wrong with getting into a trade,” he said. “I'm going to be graduating with zero debt, and I'll have certifications, and I'll be ready to go to work.” In fact, Patrick is already working at Airport Auto Body in Batavia. Speaking to Patrick, it's clear that he's proud to be following in his father's footsteps, and the lessons Patrick has learned from Ricky often echo in his ears. “What my dad taught me is work ethic,” Patrick said. “He's always made me be a hard worker, and to stay at it.”

Director Tim Burton created the 1989 movie's Batmobile, and he said it was his toughest challenge, according to hotcars.com. Burton is said to have worked closely with stylist Anton Furst to produce the car’s design. Burton is reported as having said, “Even after the drawing was done, though, we still were not sure how it would go over in the film. It wasn’t until we saw it in rushes that we knew it was right.” Furst reportedly said, “To me, the Batmobile was a pure piece of expressionism. I tried to give it that ‘knight in armor’ look, taking elements of the speed machines from the Utah Salt Flats, the Corvette Stingrays of the ‘50s, and combining those elements with jet aircraft components to create one cohesive machine.” 23. The 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback (Bullitt – ‘599) is significant based on its association with an important person and event in American history and culture. Additionally, it is significant due to its largely original, unrestored state that is informative to its history as a movie car and as an automotive icon that vanished from public view and was highly sought after for almost half a century. It has the incredible combination of Hollywood royalty and decades of an honest family’s ownership and the secret that engulfed its mystery. The original owner and use was as Warner Brothers “Hero Car” for a car chase scene in the 1968 movie Bullitt, and it is currently owned by the Kiernan family in Hendersonville, TN. according to historicvehicle.com

f driving was merely the functionality of getting from A to B, the Pumpkin Run wouldn't be a thing. Model T, the manifestation of Detroit, and the crooning over, "Mustang Sally," wouldn't be a thing. But the interchangeableness of car culture with American culture, is that we can go from A to B. It's the freedom, and it's the camaraderie that comes at those destination points — the cruise-ins, car shows, and community. Loren Lomasky, a philosophy teacher at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, traced this freedom, and desire to move, all the way back to Aristotle. As Lomasky explained, Aristotle felt a "self-mover" was the "crucial feature distinguishing animals from plants, and thus, higher forms of life from lower." It's not just descriptive: getting from A to B, but it is "normatively rich." That is, to move is to progress; to direct ourselves, aka, "intelligent automobility." "Because we have cars to drive we can, more than any other people in history, choose where we will live, where we will work, and separate these two choices from each other," Lomasky said. Or put even more simply, the automobile was democratizing, as Henry Ford said in 1909. And for many car lovers, it's also the aesthetic as an extension of ourselves: the fine-

tuned beauty of the engine, the curves and fins, and the sultry steel and aluminum finishes. "A truly beautiful car is one that is balanced, one that enjoys a harmonious play between its shape, detailing and mechanical underpinning, one that feels as good at the wheel, or to ride in, as it does to look at in magazines or on the road," Jonathan Glancey, architectural critic and former design editor for The Guardian, said in a 2004 article. Glancey thought the Jaguar E-Type series 1 coupe, out in 1961, was a “rolling sculpture” and one of the most beautiful cars ever made. And yes, it's British, but Glacey added that more than just a pleasure to look at, the Jaguar was a “joy to ride.” Whatever your reason for getting from A to B, and whatever beauty you decide to do in, The Sun has a few options for short road trips familiar to readers within Clermont County, and perhaps some new ideas for cruisers heading out of the area. Note: The Sun is relying on, “Shifra Stein's Day Trips From Cincinnati: Getaways Less Than Two Hours Away,” by David Hunter. Hunter said taking U.S. 52 east from Cincinnati along the river villages of New Richmond and Moscow "takes the visitor back a few more years in time." - A good place to start is at the Ross-Gowdy House Museum at 125 George St. in New

Richmond, a Greek revival building, home of Historic New Richmond, Inc., with records, memorabilia, and genealogical writings. Just five miles east, head to Ulysses S. Grant Birthplace in Point Pleasant. - Continuing along 52, through the village of Moscow and into the village of Chilo, a place one veteran steamboat captain once said had to be the "center of the universe" because of how many steamboats were in the port. But eight miles past that point, one hits the Ole Augusta Ferry, the Ohio landing for the ferryboat across the river to Augusta, Kentucky. It's a trip you can take right in your vehicle. When docking on the other side of the river, Hunter recommends The Beehive at 101 West Riverside Drive, boasting a view of the river and an early 1800s ambience. - After enjoying The Beehive's food, make a return trip on the ferry and continue 10 miles on U.S. 52 to Ripley, Ohio, home to the famed Ohio Tobacco Festival, as well as the John Rankin House, one of Ohio's most famous Underground Railroad “stations” at 6152 Rankin Hill Road, and the Ripley Museum at 219 North Second Street. While in the area, a cruiser could keep on going across the bridge to Maysville, and then Washington, Kentucky, and then head back to Manchester, Ohio. - Looking to venture beyond the southeast? Head up to Yellow Springs, Ohio for a trip befitting your 1960s cruiser with a village plucked out of the 1960s. From the county seat of Batavia, it's about a three hour roundtrip. If you start feeling funny after the commute, head to Ha Ha Pizza at 108 Xenia Avenue. The commercial district is lined with unique shops, offering artifacts, books, New Ages therapies, and items like crystals, pyramids, incense, and candles. - About 30 minutes north of Yellow Springs up US 68 is Ur-

bana, Ohio, what Hunter calls "the picture of small-town America." Carmazzi's corner store at 100 S. Main St. hasn't changed much since it opened 100 years ago, offering newspapers, toys, and old-time penny candy priced at under a nickel. And if you start missing the expansive acreage of Clermont County, head over to Robert Rothschild Berry Farm at 3143 East U.S. 36, what Hunter calls relaxing "mecca for foodies." - And we couldn't finish this sampling of possible day cruises without mentioning an admittedly lengthy trip over to Fort Knox, Kentucky. If coming from Batavia, it's more than a five-hour roundtrip. But that's worth it to drive along Gold Vault Road, passing the famed two-story U.S. Gold Depository, where a large portion of U.S. gold reserves are stored. "Nowhere else on earth is there known to be such a treasure in one spot," Hunter said. Just be sure to steer your GTO or Corvette clear of the U.S. Army's Sherman tanks. But if you're looking for something a bit more interactive, head over to the Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor off of U.S. 31/60 west, in Keyes Park. The museum boasts pearlhanded revolvers, Patton's combat jeep, and the army limousine he was in when a traffic crash ended his life in 1945. Whichever path you take, whether it's sticking to the familiarity of New Richmond, heading out to Ha Ha in Yellow Springs, or being enthralled by gold in Kentucky, remember: it's your choice.

G reen Sales Company’s inventory on line You can look for your part 24/7 by going to greensalescompany.com

If you are looking for the latest or the oldest in Ford and Lincoln-Mercury parts, Green Sales Company has exactly what you need. Green Sales Company, located at 2172 Seymour Avenue in Cincinnati, has an inventory of more than 210,000 part numbers for cars and trucks from 1950 to the present. Everything from standard hardware to complete truck cabs are fair game when you are looking for those hard to find parts. Anything a dealer may have stocked over the past 50+ years and much more is a potential find at their 107,000 sf. facility. In addition, they stock a wealth of reproduction parts, and weatherstrips from a variety of manufacturers. They also offer a large selection of remanufactured items. Even when they are not able to supply your needs the company’s research staff can help you find your part using their 3 locator systems: PartsVoice, One Touch and ADP. Since 1957, Green Sales Company has been buying and selling current and obsolete products from Ford and LincolnMercury dealerships all over the world. While focused in the United States, they have found inventories to purchase from as far away as South America, Israel and Russia. Mining companies, foreign militaries and governments, shipping companies, financiers, foreign and domestic parts distributors, private and commercial fleets are just a few of the unusual places Green Sales Company has found inventory to purchase. Although Green Sales is not a dealer, they have years of dealer experience and competitive pricing. Five of their sales

personnel have served as Ford Parts Managers or lead countermen. In fact, there is in excess of 350 years of parts experience shared between their seasoned parts staff. This, in addition to their support staff, makes them a valuable resource in providing you the parts you need. President Tim Yeomans bought into the business in 1980 before acquiring the entire company in 1990. Yeomans started his career with Chevrolet Motor Division accounting department before moving to the Parts and Service Division at Ford Motor Company where he worked for 13 years. Les Yeomans has been with the Green Sales Company for 20 years and has been the company’s general manager for 9 years. Operation’s manager, Bruce Yeomans, has dedicated his entire 17 year sales career with Green Sales. Green Sales Company’s inventory can be searched by part number night and day when visiting GreenSalesCompany.com. “It’s useful in checking our inventory and finding our basic business information but it’s not designed as a high powered sales tool,” Yeomans said. “It shows that we offer a whole lot of fun stuff. You can see pictures of everything from Ford memorabilia to rare and unusual parts and oil filters. If you are browsing on the Web, it’s something the enthusiast can enjoy.” Contact the knowledgeable sales staff at Green Sales Company Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays. Snacks to go

with you on the road By Rita nadeR Heikenfeld

Tailgating and living out of a camper is always fun, especially in the autumn. Here’s some tailgate and family friendly recipes that can be made ahead, allowing you lots of fun time outdoors!

S’MORES MARSHMALLOW POPS

These S’mores pops are just as good as the traditional S’mores that you grill over a campfire, but much easier, and can be made ahead, ready to tote! 1 bag regular or jumbo marshmallows Ingredients 1 bag chocolate morsels Graham crackers Sucker sticks

Instructions: Melt chocolate over low heat in a pan or in microwave. Pull off the heat when you can still see a little unmelted chocolate. Stir with a spoon to smooth and melt the rest of the chocolate. This prevents the chocolate from burning. Crush graham crackers into coarse crumbs. Place in small bowl. Place a sucker stick in the center of a marshmallow, dip in chocolate, then into the cracker crumbs. Let dry on parchment or waxed paper.

TIP • Try different dippers, like butterscotch or white chocolate morsels, toasted coconut, jimmies, crushed cookies, etc.

CHEESY RANCH CHEX MIX A different twist on an old favorite!

Ingredients 7-8 cups Corn, rice or wheat Chex cereals or a combination 2 cups bite size pretzel twists 2 cups bite size cheese crackers 1 package Ranch dressing mix 4 tablespoons butter, melted 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded

24 • 44 TH Pumpkin Run Nationals

Instructions: In large microwavable bowl, mix cereal, pretzels and crackers. In small microwavable bowl, microwave butter just until melted. Pour over cereal mixture; stir until evenly coated. Stir in dressing mix and cheese until evenly coated. TIP • Add a handful of nuts for added protein.

YOU DREAM IT THEY BUILD IT

BY: KARI STRUNK PHOTO CREDIT: KARI STRUNK

Ever on the road and see one of those “old timey cars” roll by? Well, from here on out we’ll refer to them as traditional hot rods. My husband cringes when I call them “old timey cars”. These hot rods are the kind that take you back to a simpler era. It was a time when cars were made of steel, were garnished with shiny, chrome moldings and sleek body lines that seemed to glide down the old country roads. They don’t make them the way they used to that’s for sure. As that hot rod passed you by, did you wonder…where in the world did they get that gem? It’s not like you can go into town and order one from the local dealership. Well, we have some locals that can help track one down for you. Yep- right here in Clermont County we have a couple of respectable gentlemen that’ll make your dreams come true. These fellas operate a hot rod fabrication shop right here in the small town of Monterey which is right outside of Owensville. Jack and Drew Strunk of Dropped Axle Productions have been fabricating custom rides for car enthusiasts across the world. They have brought many a smile to many faces. You may not have heard of them

because they have no need to advertise. They do however have a Facebook page and Instagram accounts. You can find them on Facebook at hotrodfabricator and Jack Strunk. On Instagram search for hotrodfabricator and jack_strunk. The business is run strictly by referrals. As advertising isn’t even needed, this speaks volumes and credits the quality of work performed. Continually serving repeat customers is a telltale sign of a stellar business. Once you stumble on something great, you just stick with it. They have been steadily busy since the beginning. In fact, they have a waiting list of four months. Fifteen years ago, Jack retired from the mundane work world and decided to open his own hot rod business with his son, Drew. They specialize in custom frames for Ford models from 1928-1934. As of date, they have built 175 frames over the years. Just recently, their focus has been on Chevy truck frames from ’47 and on. Other work orders include drive shafts, motor mounts and setting up and narrowing rear ends. If you’d like to meet these good old boys, stop in at The Pumpkin Run Nationals Show vendor area. The show runs from October 4-6 at the Clermont County Fairgrounds. This show is quite impressive for a small-town venue. Each year over 3,000 cars are spread over the grounds. You’ll see everything from hot rods, muscle cars, Volkswagen vans and gassers. This is a family event and will entertain all ages. Not only are there cars, but they have bands, dancing, children’s contests, swap meet and much more. Oh, yeah, let’s not forget the tasty foods! So, the next time you see an “old timey car”, think of those Strunk fellas and put your order in! You can be that person to bring smiles to many faces the next time you simply cruise down that country road.

IMPORTANT

Please refrain from “burn-outs” when leaving the show. Although many spectators line the street in anticipation, this is not a show event. Fastiques strongly discourages spinning out when exiting the show. The roads around the fairgrounds are narrow and crowded; if a car gets out of control, several bystanders could be injured. Police will issue tickets.
