LEN KOMOROSKI president, cleveland cavaliers, quicken loans arena govenor, lake erie monsters Len Komoroski was named president of the Cavaliers/Quicken Loans Arena organization in April 2003. With more than 30 years of experience in professional sports and entertainment, Komoroski’s leadership and business initiative set a solid foundation from which the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers, AHL Lake Erie Monsters and Quicken Loans Arena has flourished into one of the most successfully operated sports and entertainment organizations in the country. During the 2003-04 season, Komoroski oversaw the restructuring of how the Cavaliers approached the business community and assembled a staff featuring some of the top sports marketing executives in the industry. He directed the transformation of the Cavaliers communications efforts and called for the dramatic changes that led to developing one of the most dynamic game experiences in the NBA. Those efforts, combined with one very special NBA draft and the team’s improvement on the court, resulted in one of the top business turnaround stories in NBA history. For the 2003-04 season, the Cavaliers had the largest year-over-year attendance increase in NBA history, progressing from a leaguelow of 11,497 per game in 2002-03 to 18,288 in 2003-04 (a 59% increase). Television ratings were up 300% and featured revised broadcast agreements resulting in the largest number of locally-televised games in team history. Radio ratings also increased by more than 200% and local merchandise sales grew by 500%. Since then, Komoroski has led continued growth and development across the board, bringing the Cavs into the top tier of revenue teams in the NBA. In 2009-10, the Cavaliers experienced a history-making, record-setting regular season both on and off the court. For the first time in Cavaliers history, supported by the largest season ticket base ever, all 41 home games sold out for an average of 20,562 fans per home game and the season ended with 83 consecutive sold out games (dating back to the 2008-09 season). The streak continued into the 2010-11 season through January 21, 2011 with 102 consecutive sellouts. Under Komoroski’s leadership, the overall business success for the entire organization was recognized when, for two consecutive years in 2009 and 2010, the Cavaliers were named a finalist for Sports Business Journal’s prestigious “Sports Team of the Year” award. The award recognizes excellence and innovation in sports franchise business operations. The Cavaliers were also #1 in the NBA and #5 in all of pro sports in the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Rankings of “How Pro Sports Teams Pay Back Their Fans.” Among his many achievements at the helm of the Cavaliers business operations, Komoroski played a pivotal role in developing one of the top cable television relationships in the NBA with Fox Sports Ohio, as well as the entitlement of the Cavaliers new state-of-the-art player development facility – Cleveland Clinic Courts. In addition, he had a leadership role in the acquisition of the American Hockey League franchise, the Lake Erie Monsters, who played their inaugural season at The Q in 2007-08. In just their third season, the Monsters were named the AHL’s 2009-10 Ticket Sales Team of the year after ranking sixth in the league in average attendance. The team saw an increase in almost every ticket sales category, including season tickets, partial plans, groups and overall revenue. The Monsters were also awarded by the AHL for ‘exceptional community service efforts’ during the 2009-10 season, one of only two teams in the league to receive the honor. Very active as a community and civic leader, Komoroski is passionate about the future of Cleveland and northeast Ohio. He played a significant role on Dan Gilbert’s team in an Ohio constitutional referendum to bring first-class casino gaming to the state’s four largest cities, including Cleveland. The Cleveland casino will be developed in a truly urban setting near The Q and will bring a new vitality to the city, while adding to its stature as an entertainment destination. (Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert’s Rock Gaming partnership will own and develop the future Cleveland and Cincinnati casinos.)

HISTORY 2011-12 CANTON CHARGE MEDIA GUIDE

NAMING THE TEAM & LOGO HISTORY naming the charge watch video

Sometimes, a team’s colors and uniforms are more than just that. They’re the team’s identity. The NFL’s Oakland Raiders are often called the “Silver and Black.” Baseball fans know that the “Pinstripes” refer to the New York Yankees. Collegiately, the day after the Charge opened their inaugural season, college football fans watched the bitter perennial matchup between the “Scarlet and Grey” and the “Maize and Blue.” The Cavaliers colors are wine and gold. And the Cavaliers are known as “the Wine and Gold.” So when the Cavs’ NBA D-League affiliate was seeking its original color scheme, outfitting the team in those regal tones was the easy part. The process of actually naming the team playing in those colors? Not so much. That process included fan-voting, focus groups and man-on-the-street interviews in Canton. The Cavs conducted multiple focus groups over a month’s time. Supplied with a series of team names – generated internally and from fan voting – members of the marketing department talked with stakeholders in Canton, from community leaders to season ticket-holders. The organization also sent out their Q-TV team to do over 150 man-on-the-street interviews in two different locations simultaneously on two different days. “Knowing that Cavalier-style names were important, but also knowing that it was really important for the community to find a name that’s unique to them, we started to narrow it down,” said Tracy Marek, the Cavaliers Chief Marketing Officer. “By the time we were done narrowing it down using the focus groups, Charge was the clear-cut leader.” Although the search for a name was exhaustive, Marek adds that “Charge” was at the front of the pack right out of the gate. “We had thousands of entries and we read every one of them,” said Marek. “We made a master list of names – I’d say between 900 to 1,000 unique names – out of several thousand entries. So, on one side, we just compiled a list of those names. And on a parallel path to that, we made a list of our own names. “Looking back, ‘Charge’ was on our very first list.” “We think Charge is not only a great name for the team, but it can also help reflect an attitude and mindset for our entire community,” added Mayor Michael Healy. And so the team was named. Their logo features a swashbuckling figure, brandishing his blade above the Canton Charge wordmark – somewhat of an updated version of the old Cavalier from the ‘70s logo, escaping the constraints of the roundball and thrusting his sword forward. With the team name and colors decided, all that remained was for the actual uniforms to be designed. Utilizing the Cavaliers colors, the Charge unveiled their new threads for the inaugural season. But where the Charge breaks from their parent club in Cleveland is with a unique home “gold” uniform, which reads “Charge” across the chest. Alex Jensen’s squad will wear “wine” on the road, with “Canton” emblazoned across the chest. The symbiotic relationship between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Canton Charge is in its infancy, and team colors are just the beginning of a beautiful partnership. “In (Canton’s) case, it’s not a little brother – it’s part of the organization,” concluded Marek. “We’re not treating Canton like a separate entity. The Canton team is the Cleveland Cavaliers.”

It’s not as if Canton hasn’t seen its share of exciting roundball at the Civic Center. For years, fans have watched several future pros – including a few future Cavaliers – cut their teeth in the high school playoffs. “Every year I visit the Civic Center to watch several Sectional and District OHSAA playoff games, and I’m always amazed by how many of these local stars experience success at the college and professional level,” observed Mayor William Healy. “Former NBA stars, Nick Weatherspoon, Gary Grant, Phil Hubbard, Keith McLeod and Eric Snow all called Canton their hometown, so we are no stranger to professional basketball.” Keith McLeod, inked by the Charge on October 20, has played his share of big games at the Civic Center. The 32-year-old Canton-McKinley grad eventually moved on to win Player of the Year honors in the M.A.C. with Bowling Green, and played for four NBA teams before returning home. He recalled a big game against Jackson High at the Civic Center – avenging McKinley’s only home loss of the season. And now, some of those same hoops fans will see the Charge’s new combo-guard once again. “Around here, that’s all I’m hearing is people saying, ‘I can’t wait to get to a game,’” beamed McLeod. “I think it’s going to be real nice, and I think everybody around here is excited to see what it’s going to be like.” The Civic Center, built in 1951, has hosted – and continues to host – more than just basketball. The Canton Invaders played indoor soccer there for 13 years and the Canton Legends indoor football played there for three. Currently, indoor soccer is represented by the Ohio Vortex and indoor football, the Canton Cougars. Several WWE and ECW smackdowns have been held at the Civic Center, and the venue hosted an MMA event just two nights before the Charge opener. The 3,942-seat arena has also welcomed some of the biggest names in entertainment and politics. Comedians Jeff Dunham and Eddie Griffin have performed there recently and legends like Bob Dylan have done so in the past. And naturally, the Globetrotters make an annual stop. Rudy Giuliani and George W. Bush have spoken at the Civic Center, as has Barack Obama – who held a Closing Address Rally eight days before being elected as Commander in Chief. Of course, before becoming the everyday home of a professional basketball team, the Civic Center appreciated some updates and renovations. And the Cavaliers organization rolled up their sleeves to get them done in short order. While the Civic Center retains the special character of a proud, experienced basketball venue, several updates and a couple renovations have also readied it for the next phase of its service as home to a new pro team. A new pro-style maple court and extension baskets from Spalding were installed. The overhead lighting grid was also increased and improved. Plus, other lighting effects and physical updates in the seating area were added that will certainly create an updated look and feel to the game environment, while maintaining the great old-school vibe and closeness to the game . The fan experience at the Civic Center was also considered, and floor seating, court boxes and a VIP area were added.

CANTON CIVIC CENTER / EDGEWOOD canton civic center & edgewood community center Cavaliers Vice President of Facility Operations Antony Bonavita ran the point for most of the improvements. “We focus on great fan experiences (at Quicken Loans Arena) and we want to create a platform for that in Canton,” said Bonavita. “Similar to our Cavaliers product, we wanted to make sure that people recognize that what you see at The Q – obviously to a different degree – is what you’re going to experience with the Canton Charge.” The Charge players will also be pleased with the renovations – which were begun on September 19 and wrapped up less than two months later. They’ll see a renovated locker room. And naturally, the shower heads were adjusted for potential 6-9 power forwards. And beginning on the night of November 25, against the Champion Iowa Energy, the Charge will call the updated Civic Center home for 24 games this season. (They’ll play 24 home, 24 away and two games at the D-League Showcase.) The Charge will play their first four games – and nine of the first 13 – on the corner of Market and 12th. The Civic Center is where the Charge unveiled the finished product on November 25, but before they could take the (new) floor, they needed a place to hone their skills. And in late September, the Cavaliers and Charge settled on the spacious Edgewood Community Center as the team’s official practice and training facility. “In the Edgewood Community Center we have found the right space and amenities necessary to create a great practice and training environment for the team,” praised Charge General Manager Wes Wilcox. “And we look forward to a great partnership with Edgewood.” Edgewood Community Center has been open to the public since March 2007, with the goal of enriching the community’s physical, emotional and spiritual health – from children to seniors – through fitness, sports, arts, recreation and wellness. This year, the court was configured into a regulation NBA court. It had to be stripped down – which was a process lasting almost four weeks. It was also an 84-foot court and had to be extended to 94 feet. Lines were painted, a shot clock installed and coaches offices were retrofitted. ECC is not only where the squad will practice, it’s where a good portion of it was assembled. On November 3, 2011, the facility hosted the team’s first-ever NBA D-League Draft. Media, Cavaliers and Charge staff – along with fans and season ticket holders – watched the selections unfold in real time. And after his selection in the first round, top pick Tyrell Biggs made his first public appearance in Canton. Biggs and his new teammates will rock the Civic Center this winter as pro ball comes to Canton. The Civic Center has seen its share of legends and Hall of Famers walk through the door – from Barry Sanders to Barack Obama. Canton’s D-League hoopsters are a long way from basketball’s Hall of Fame. But as Confucius said: The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. They take that first step on November 25. “This is something that the Civic Center can be proud of long-term,” concluded Bonavita. “We certainly appreciated the great partnership with the city and the fans. We said we were going to bring a first-class product to Canton – and I think we’ve done that.”
