NORMAN A. SUGARMAN CHILDREN'S BIOGRAPHY AWARD Cleveland Public Library is proud to announce nationally recognized author and illustrator Ashley Bryan is the recipient of the 2020 Norman A. Sugarman Children’s Biography Award for his memoir,

Infinite Hope: A Black Artist’s Journey from World War II to Peace.

Published by Simon and Schuster, Infinite Hope: A Black Artist’s Journey from World War II to Peace is a touching picture book memoir about war seen through the eyes of an African American soldier. Bryan shares his experiences serving in the segregated army during World War II and how love and art sustained him. Bryan’s memoir is considered both a lesson in history and a testament of hope. This event is free and open to the public. The awards ceremony will be held Thursday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Additionally, three authors received Norman A. Sugarman Children’s Biography Honor Awards: Feed Your Mind: A Story of August Wilson by Jen Bryant August Wilson was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who had a talent for capturing the authentic, everyday voice of Black Americans. Like many of his plays, Feed Your Mind is told in two acts, revealing how Wilson grew up to be one of the most influential American playwrights. Grandma Gatewood Hikes the Appalachian Trali by Jennifer Thermes Emma Gatewood’s life as a mother of 11 kids in rural Ohio was far from easy. One day, at age 67, she decided to go for a nice long walk...and ended up completing the Appalachian Trail. A story of grit and girl power at any age, Grandma Gatewood proves that no peak is insurmountable. Library on Wheels: Mary Lemist Titcomb and America’s First Bookmobile by Sharlee Glenn As a librarian in Maryland, Mary Lemist Titcomb was always looking for ways to improve access to library resources. She set about to change the library system forever with the introduction of book-deposit stations, a children’s room, and her most revolutionary idea of all—a horse-drawn book wagon.
