“ The Library is where I got my start. This is where you make it happen—everything is here.” – Lavetta Louise Price East 131st Street Branch Patron
LEADING with Her Heart For Lavetta Louise Price, Cleveland Public Library’s East 131st Street Branch serves as a refuge, a learning center, and a place to make connections and build community. BY LAURA WALTER
L
avetta Louise Price is a woman on a mission—to start a business, to strengthen her community, and, most of all, to help others. Thanks to the resources available to her at Cleveland Public Library’s East 131st Street Branch, she’s able to accomplish all these goals and more. “This is a place where you have access to the world,” Price says. “There’s a peace in the library, a spirit of help. Anything you want to do, the staff here will help you.” While Price has patronized East 131st Street Branch since she was a child, it was only in recent years that she turned to the Library as a source of support and inspiration. Following a separation from her husband, and as her children grew older and began leaving for college, Price found herself feeling lonely and isolated at home. She sought out a place where she could be productive and interact with others in her community—and her beloved local library turned out to be a perfect fit. “I’ve been made to feel comfortable here,” Price says. “There’s a positive energy. Elsewhere, people are in a hurry or impatient, but you can take your time at the library. There’s no attitude, no negativity.
It’s really helping me toward my success.” As Price defines it, “success” means serving others, and she has a long history of philanthropic work to back it up. Price established her own nonprofit organization, Love and Care Ministries, under which she ran the Gifted Hands Summer Camp to offer children instruction in sign language. She also created Put It Down, a women’s self-esteem program based around poetry. Through Put It Down, Price helped women struggling with homelessness, substance abuse, legal issues, or family complications by encouraging them to express themselves through writing. In addition to this nonprofit work, Price has also volunteered widely, including collecting thousands of pounds of clothing for Easter Seals, feeding the homeless, and more. Currently, Price is working to launch Sadie’s Den: A Sober Club, which she envisions as an open, welcoming environment to help her fellow community members achieve and maintain sobriety. In order to support Sadie’s Den and her other endeavors, Price recently launched her own business for commercial and residential cleaning, A1 Moving and Clean Out Services. East 131st Branch proved
instrumental in assisting Price as she filed for her LLC and got the business up and running. Marina Marquez, East 131st Branch Manager, helped Price navigate this process. “She’s innovative,” Marquez says of Price. “She’s utilizing the Library and learning to use all the programs we offer to start her own business. And she’s also helping other patrons who come in, primarily women going through recovery or women who can’t get jobs because they have a record. Her whole life is dedicated to helping others. She leads with her heart.” Price credits the East 131st Street Branch—particularly the guidance she’s received from Marquez, Library Assistant Rosa Simone, and other staff members— with helping turn her vision into reality. By visiting her local library branch, she's gained computer skills, located forms and documents she needed for her business, and made connections with other members of the community. “The Library is where I got my start,” Price says. “This is where you make it happen—everything is here.”

FAREWELL to Fines Cleveland Public Library goes fine free. BY LAURA WALTER
O
n July 27, when Clevelanders flocked to the CPL150 Street Festival held in honor of the Library’s 150 th anniversary, they also had another reason to celebrate: the official start of the Library’s new fine-fee policy, which will increase public access to library resources and information. “We want to remove barriers, not block people from accessing the Library,” says Executive Director Felton Thomas, Jr. “We want to connect people to knowledge and ideas, not stand in the way. This important step will help us do our everyday work of fostering learning experiences—sparking curiosity, making connections, and building skills every day for all Greater Clevelanders.” Beginning July 27, 2019, fines are no longer assigned to overdue Cleveland Public Library materials. If an item is not returned within 28 days, however, it will be considered lost and will accrue a replacement fee. This system ensures library materials remain in circulation while also releasing patrons from the burden of overdue fines, which may have a disproportionate effect on low-income and vulnerable populations. Going fine free is a natural next step in the Library’s progression toward eradicating fines to improve access. The Library eliminated overdue fines for seniors in 1977, for children’s materials in 1978, for disabled patrons in 1992, and for young adult materials and homebound patrons in 2001. The fine-free trend is gaining traction both regionally and nationally, with libraries seeing the benefit of eliminating overdue fines for their patrons. “We’re pleased to offer our community members the opportunity to use Cleveland Public Library materials without fear of incurring late fees,” Thomas says. “Going fine free is just one way we’re committed to leveling opportunities for all patrons—and we’re proud to do so in 2019, our 150th anniversary year.”

YOUR YEAR,
Your Stories
“ It has been 39 summers since I arrived in Cleveland from Romania (Transylvania) with my family and visited Cleveland Public Library, where I went to learn English. Later, I worked as a page and, after graduating from Cleveland State University, a full-time staff member. Thank you, Cleveland Public Library, for giving me an opportunity to learn, for providing Hungarian materials to my extended family, and for offering information in many languages and services for 150 years to all of Cleveland.” –E. Baron
“ A s a student who attended Harry E. Davis Junior High School in the 60s, I was devoted to the public library [the former Superior Branch] located behind the school on East 105th Street. That library was where my classmates and I entered into daily adventures and allowed our minds to soar. It was a mysterious, quiet place, and I adored checking out books with my magical library card. I will never forget how the library made me feel, or the many classmates I met there who remain my friends to this day.” –R. Watkins
“ It is because of my parents and the Library, especially the East 131st Street Branch, that I developed a love for reading. I stopped at the branch every day on my home from school to discover new books, and then I locked myself in my bedroom to read and read and read. When I became a parent, I took my son to the Library. Now, when I can’t get out as often as I’d like, the Library even offers services for the homebound. Awesome! Cleveland Public Library has evolved so much and is a treasure trove waiting to be opened by everyone.” –M.M. Weems.

he Library’s community-based storytelling and photography projects, which run throughout 2019 as a way to celebrate and document the lives of Clevelanders, are currently in full swing—and Cleveland residents still have the chance to record their oral histories or participate in a photo shoot. Local photographers are busy capturing the city and its people for Cleveland 20/20: A Photographic Exploration of Cleveland, the citywide photography program led by the Cleveland Print Room. Participating local photographers are busy shooting in the neighborhoods and at local events throughout town, with work to be shared online and in a special Library exhibit in 2020. six stories for the radio, video, and web. All remaining oral histories recorded as part of this project will be made available on the Library’s Digital Gallery. “Our plan is to provide a snapshot of Cleveland’s people in 2019,” says ideastream producer Justin Glanville. “We aim to present the everyday experience of people across the city’s socioeconomic spectrum and to evoke compassion and camaraderie.” “We’re showing that our city is full of fascinating people,” adds Chatham Ewing, Digital Library Strategist at Cleveland Digital Public Library. “We want to remind our patrons and each other that there’s a universe within everyone, and we should respect and admire that. These interviews also help us reach across a historical gap and help us share one another’s stories—all within the context of how we value our patrons within our city.” In May, ideastream shared the first produced story, which surrounds Robert Donona, a font collector and amateur typographer. His story and others can be accessed at ideastream.org/stories-from-cleveland.

STORY EXCERPTS
Several excerpts from stories recorded as part of the CPL150 Storytelling Project appear below. Interview excerpts have been lightly edited or condensed. Who has been the most important person in your life?
“My mother. My mother was there when I was up, down, whatever. She was always there. I remember when I was a teenager, and everybody [at school] used to make fun of us… She’d say, ‘Don’t let them bring you down. You are a beautiful person. Don’t let anybody drag you down.’ I loved her to death. When she passed, I had to set an example for my daughter at that time. I told my daughter, ‘Mama’s gone from here now, but she’s still in our hearts. She’s not gone forever, she’s gone back home. If ever you want to talk to her, get her advice, you sit down and you talk to her. If you’ll be still long enough, you’ll feel her there.’” –Elaine, a patron interviewed at Hough Branch
What is your best childhood memory?
“When I would go outside, find stray cats with my best friend, and we would bring them home and dress them up like baby dolls. We knew we couldn’t keep them, but we named every single one of them. I think over the years of my childhood, we ended up with at least 30 cats and kittens. My favorite was a big fat male cat. He was an orangey color with tan stripes. His name was Mikey. We were able to keep him, but we hid him. He spent half the time at my house, half the time at her house. I think we ended up having him maybe about nine months before anybody actually realized we had this cat. We were sneaking and buying him cat food with our allowance, and nobody ever knew it but me and my best friend.” –Janice Spivey, a patron interviewed at Fleet Branch
Tell us about your time in the service and how you got to be in the Navy.
“I went downtown [to the Navy recruiting office] when I was sixteen and a half by myself. I was so small that they escorted me out, they said I’d have to bring my parents. I brought my dad down the next day, and he signed the papers. [Later], I just told my mother I had to go downtown to turn my stuff in, but it was to get on the bus to go to Chicago for training camp. I called her from Chicago and told her. She started crying. My mom never drank, but she had two doubles that day. [Laughs.] This was 1946. I was in Chicago for training, and then I got in a ship in San Diego for roughly a year and then was stationed in Cuba for six months. The day I got home, it was like 2 o’clock in the morning, and [my family] knew I was coming home. They were all sitting on the front porch, my mother, father, and sister, waiting for me to walk down the street. But I took a cab. The cab driver didn’t charge me. He said, ‘Get out of here, kid.’” –Mr. Bud, a patron interviewed at Fleet Branch

KNITTING a Community A special charitable program inspired by a late Cleveland Public Library staff member warms both hands and hearts throughout the city. BY L AU R A WA LT E R
A
cross Cleveland every year, children and adults in need are gifted handmade hats, scarves, blankets, or mittens to help them feel warm and cared for during the cold winter months. This generosity is made possible by volunteers who donate knitted items to Warm Up Cleveland, a program that traces its origins back to one very special Library employee: Diane Mathews. “She was an avid knitter,” Debbie Hajzak, Outreach and Programming Services Coordinator at Cleveland Public Library, says of Mathews. “It was woven into her identity. You never saw Diane without her knitting bag.” Hajzak and Mathews met in 1997, when they both worked in the Library’s Science & Technology department, and their friendship blossomed through a shared love of knitting. They knitted together at lunchtime, in the Eastman Reading Garden, and during special knit-ins. Mathews, who loved to knit items for her family, friends, and charity alike, also helped develop the Library’s collection of knitting-related books and materials. “Knitting was, in many ways, her meditation,” Hajzak says of Mathews. “It was her gift to others and her gift to herself. Her knitting was always with her: on breaks, in the cafeteria, in the reading garden.” Sadly, cancer took Mathews from her family and the Library too soon. She passed away in March 2010 at the age of sixty-two, a loss that deeply affected those who knew and loved her. Hajzak and others made good on their promise to collect Mathews’s yarn and other knitting supplies to form a crafting network for Library employees. In only three months, Hajzak says, about a dozen employees made 250 items from Mathews’s materials. The items were later donated to local charities, and Warm Up Cleveland was born. The project was so successful that Warm Up Cleveland went public in 2011, inviting donations of handmade items from community members outside of the Library. The public’s response was enthusiastic, and the number of items made and donated by 8

volunteers has steadily increased every year since. As of early summer 2019, Warm Up Cleveland has donated 13,599 items to charitable organizations, which distribute the hats, mittens, scarves, and blankets to people in need. While the Library will accept store-bought items for donation, the heart of the program surrounds the handmade element. “We call it Warm Up Cleveland because it’s spreading warmth. Not just the physical warmth of a hat or scarf, but the warmth that someone cares,” Hajzak says. “I know Diane thought the same way—that you’re knitting your good intentions into the item.” The response from program recipients reflects that spirit of goodwill. Hajzak fondly remembers the child who immediately started a snowball fight with friends after donning his new mittens, or the man in a shelter who delighted in trading his old hat for a bright red cable-knit cap topped with a pompom. He proclaimed his new hat superior, Hajzak recalls, “because it’s got love in it.” Today, Warm Up Cleveland donates knitted and crocheted items to nearly a dozen organizations, including shelters, refugee centers, crisis centers, and other local charities. But the warmth doesn’t end there—the Library also uses knitting to help connect patrons and enrich their lives.
Knitting for Love
By encouraging staff and the public to knit, Diane Mathews indirectly inspired the Library to develop free knitting and crocheting groups that provide instruction, materials, and camaraderie. “The knitting is the medium, and that’s why we get together,” says Eleanor Bergholz, a volunteer who established the Harvey Rice Knit and Crochet Group at Rice Branch, which is currently in its eighth year of operation. “But what we bring to it, and what we get out of it, amounts to so much more. This is really a lifeline for lots of people.” The Harvey Rice Knit and Crochet Group attracts a diverse range of patrons seeking fellowship along with knitting guidance.
“It’s a stress reliever,” she says. “If you’re constantly on your phone and you want to give yourself a break from technology, knitting is a great way to do that.” Musser and Flinn are quick to correct the misconceptions they occasionally hear surrounding knitting. For starters, this isn’t only a pursuit for women; Musser points out that many men enjoy knitting or crocheting, as well. Flinn adds that while some people feel they’re too impatient to knit, the process can actually foster patience and focus. Finally, she adds that mistakes are fixable, so new knitters shouldn’t be discouraged by a fear of failure. “This is not mass-produced perfection. It’s handmade,” Flinn explains. “People sometimes think knitting has to be an arduous thing, but it’s not. It can be simple and fun.” Harvey Rice Knit And Crochet Group Knitters of all skill levels, including first-timers, are welcome to attend a knitting group at the Library. No prior knitting experience is needed, and thanks Members describe the group as a family, a community, and a to a robust donation program, the Library is able to provide yarn place to build positive relationships. Monica Musser, Library Assistant of the Public Administration Library (PAL), located in Cleveland City Hall, was a knitting novice when she formed the branch’s knitting club several years ago. Popular Library Manager Sarah Flinn, an avid knitter, helped teach the craft to Musser and others when the PAL club got its start. Musser has since become a knitting enthusiast.

AUTHOR VISIT: GABBY RIVERA Inspiring Radical Creativity
Gabby Rivera believes it’s vital to encourage people of all backgrounds to create, daydream, and tell their own stories—and in so doing, open a radical space for creativity. As a queer, Latinx, millennial woman, she strives to be a thoughtful ally for others, she confronts privilege and power, and she asks difficult questions: What if this country made everyone—people of all colors, cultures, orientations, abilities, and genders—feel at home? What if the traumas experienced by marginalized peoples could be reconciled and incorporated into a broader, richer
definition of America? What if our non-white ancestors weren’t erased, but represented in pop culture, in our textbooks and classrooms? And what if we could privilege difference as a site of wonder, laughter and celebration, and not as something to fear? Rivera’s smart, funny, and engaging voice helps us to start imagining these worlds as our reality. Rivera is the author of the critically acclaimed YA novel Juliet Takes a Breath, a coming-of-age story starring a queer puertorriqueña experiencing one transformative summer. Rivera’s new Marvel series America stars America Chavez, a queer, Latinx superhero who
tackles America’s ancestry and ethnicity. America is also a comic book with wide appeal: it's committed to snappy one-liners, blowing stuff up, and beating up the bad guys, naturally.
