MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE
In a special youth development pilot program at East 131st St. Branch, teens join forces to develop leadership skills, improve their community, and make their dreams come true. BY LAURA WALTER BY LAURA WALTER
O
n a January afternoon at Cleveland Public Library’s East 131st St. Branch, three teenagers show off the clothing and accessories they crafted from recycled materials. Amari Fountain, 15, dons a plastic poncho trimmed with newspaper comics while Brittani Morman, 13, wears another poncho with pockets fashioned out of potato chip bags. William Sweeney, 15, meanwhile, puts on a playful wig made out of curled strips of newspaper. The teens pose for the camera, adjust one another’s clothing, and laugh with each other and the library staff. But as much fun as they’re having, they’re together that day not just to joke around— they are the Corlett Volunteens, members of a pilot program that gives teenagers the agency to create library programming and make their community a better place. In the process, they’re gaining important leadership and professional skills. “Volunteens changed how I see myself,” Amari says. “Before, I wasn’t involved in much, and now I’m much more involved in things.” Karie Felder, a branch clerk who works with the Volunteens, points out that members have the opportunity to explore their own talents. “A lot of them like to read, so they’ve started a book club. They’re also working together to put on a newspaper fashion show,” she says. “We want to put them on a positive path, and programs like this can help with critical thinking and help them prepare for college.”
Good Deeds
The Corlett Volunteens’ official mission is to volunteer to make the community a better place; create and design programs to implement at the library; facilitate library programs; assist patrons; and research and write grants for programs. “We’re trying to change the community,” explains William. “We want to add more programs at the library, like a dance program to help kids de-stress. Or if kids have a problem at home, they can come here to talk about it.” As Volunteens, young library patrons exercise their leadership 2

potential by taking on specialized roles. Amari, for example, is the group’s Coordinator and Grant Writer, Brittani is the Supervisor of the Performing Arts & Walking Club, and William serves as Secretary and Treasurer. Additional members include Zyare Acoff, Supervisor of Technology and Podcasts, and Janyce Belton, Supervisor of the Culinary Arts & Garden Club. The Volunteens hold formal meetings at the branch biweekly. Janyce, 13, says being a part of the group has taught her how to garden and build things, such as a dollhouse made from cardboard. She has plenty of additional ideas for future projects, too. “I’d like to do a cooking challenge with different age groups,” she says, “where the older kids help the younger kids.” William, Amari, and Brittani also expressed interest in volunteering at homeless shelters, organizing school supply and food drives, partnering with local schools to provide tutoring help, arranging CPR training at the branch, launching a litter patrol, transforming the branch’s basement into a boys’ and girls’ club, and more. As Branch Manager Marina Marquez explains, providing an outlet for bright, engaged teens benefits everyone. “When I first started as manager last year, I noticed that a lot of our kids had leadership qualities they didn’t know what to do with, so they were testing the adults,” Marina says. “I called a staff meeting and said that things need to change—we need to help these kids develop those leadership qualities into something positive.” The Volunteens program kicked off in the fall of 2019 and has already proven to be a successful new offering for youth. Believe it or not, it all began half a world away in Israel—yes, Israel.
From Israel to Cleveland
In recent years, Cleveland Public Library has established a relationship with the library in Cleveland’s sister city of Beit She’an, Israel. In 2018, staff traveled to Israel as part of a trip supported by the Jewish Federation of Cleveland to learn more about Beit She’an Library’s unique youth development initiative called the Beehive. Through the Beehive, teen volunteers not only are
“The main point of our delegation to Cleveland is to see if there are any similarities between Beit She’an Library’s volunteer model and here,” said Noam. “After observing all the children working together—very beautifully, by the way—I can definitely say that our model can fit here.”
Building Confidence

empowered to create and manage library programs, but they run the entire library themselves. The relationship deepened in September 2019, when Cleveland Public Library welcomed visitors from Beit She’an, again in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. The visiting delegation included Tomer Blaise and Noam Avichzer, two teenagers who serve as youth representatives and leaders in the Beehive program, as well as Library Director Eran Moskowitz and Neighborhood Liaison Orna Bader. In addition to exploring Cleveland, the delegation spent a week touring various Library facilities; meeting with youth at East 131st St. Branch; and facilitating youth-led programming workshops for teens, Library staff, and Northeast Ohio community leaders. Discussions and workshops with teens at East 131st St. Branch proved lively and educational. While the teens discussed the differences between Cleveland and Beit She’an, they also found common ground in everything from their preferred social media platforms (Instagram and Snapchat, definitely not Facebook) to their ability to assume leadership roles within their respective libraries. At one point, however, the conversation caught Marina off guard. When Tomer and Noam asked the Clevelanders about their dreams, some of the teens said the unthinkable—that they didn’t have any dreams. “It was sad,” Marina recalls. “It made me really think about how we as adults are not asking them to dream. We need to engage with our youth and learn what they want to do.” Fortunately, the visit encouraged the Cleveland teens to view themselves, their community, and their neighborhood library in a new light. Tomer and Noam prompted their Cleveland counterparts to consider how they might want to take on leadership roles within Cleveland Public Library. They also offered tips for recruiting, interviewing, and retaining new volunteers. Ultimately, they confirmed that the Beehive’s mission could also be brought to life right here in Cleveland.
The newfound friendships between the Beit She’an and East 131st St. teens didn’t fade after Tomer and Noam returned to Israel. Today, the teens stay in touch via social media, with Tomer and Noam offering encouragement and guidance from afar. “Our teens have so much to offer,” Marina says. “They were just never given a chance before. The Beit She’an delegation helped our teens develop confidence. That visit taught them they can be leaders and be responsible for things they never dreamed they could be.” Marina stressed that for a youth development program to be successful, it’s imperative to have buy-in from library staff. In particular, she credits Branch Clerks Cathy Jennings and Karie Felder, along with Library Assistants Carla Carraway and Cherita Vaughn and other staff, for helping the Volunteens fulfill their mission. That support is already paying off in tangible ways. Only a few months into the program, the Volunteens applied for and won their first grant—$1,000 from MyCom—to support their book club. The Volunteens select the titles (they recently enjoyed Dear Martin by Nic Stone and The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon) and have attracted upwards of 20 members. “This program brings people together in a positive way,” says Cathy Jennings, branch clerk who helps the Volunteens. “Libraries are safe spaces for kids, and programs like this help them prepare for the future.”
Dream Big
As closing time approaches at East 131st St. Branch, Amari, Brittani, and William put away their newspaper fashions and prepare to head home. But before they go, perhaps they could answer one last question: What are their dreams? The teens don’t hesitate. “I want to major in IT and work in technology,” William says. “I’d like to become an entrepreneur,” says Brittani, “or maybe an actress.” “And I want to be an engineer and work for NASA,” Amari adds. It seems the Corlett Volunteens have no shortage of dreams— and with the support of the Library, the staff, and some new friends in Israel, all those dreams and more just might come true.

CLEVELAND 20/20: A SNAPSHOT OF THE CITY’S CHARACTER A special photography exhibition celebrates the people, places, and spirit of Cleveland. BY LAURA WALTER
A
s the culmination of a yearlong community photography project honoring the Library’s 150 th anniversary, Cleveland 20/20: A Photographic Exploration of Cleveland depicts the essence of our city by showcasing the work of local photographers. The free exhibition is on display in Main Library’s Brett Hall through November 2020. “This exhibition shows the diversity of life in Cleveland,” says Aaron Mason, Director of Outreach and Programming Services. “The culture of our city is defined by its neighborhoods, and Cleveland 20/20 shows how these neighborhoods set the mood of the city and demonstrate our character. It’s a great slice of life.” Cleveland 20/20 displays an eclectic array of photographs showing the city’s architecture, infrastructure, transportation, and green spaces, as well as residents at work, worship, and play. In one image, a tattooed woman stands in the grass at Edgewater Park. In another, a man washes his bicycle in a Collinwood car wash. Elsewhere in the exhibit, photographs feature subjects as varied as a pallet of vegetables in an Asiatown alley, protective 4

gloves hanging on a clothesline in Slavic Village, the Goodyear Blimp disappearing behind a building downtown, and a couple dancing outside Playhouse Square. “We set out to evoke the sense of traveling through the city rather than arranging the photographs strictly by neighborhood,” says Lisa Kurzner, principal of Kurzner Arts, who curated Cleveland 20/20. “We hope all Clevelanders will come and see some landscape or milestone in these images they identify with, whether that’s a physical place or the evocation of what they love."
Portrait of Cleveland
Cleveland 20/20 was made possible through the Library’s partnership with the Cleveland Print Room, a nonprofit community darkroom, education center, workspace, and photographic gallery that spearheaded the project. In addition to local photographers, the Cleveland Print Room invited nationally renowned, Jamaica-born photojournalist Ruddy Roye to play a featured role in the project, both artistically and in terms of community engagement and education.
Roye, who is based in New York, explored and documented Cleveland throughout 2019. When visitors step into Brett Hall, they’re greeted by Roye’s nearly life-sized portrait of boys posing with bicycles in a cemetery. Among other photographs, he also contributed striking, large-scale portraits that invite visitors to engage with their fellow Clevelanders. The portraits offer a way, Kurzner says, “of portraying the everyman of Cleveland, which is important.” On his approach to documenting Cleveland, Roye explained in his artist statement that he “wanted to treat one of the most segregated cities in the United States as if it were a person.” “The turning point for me was when I began to sit with residents of the city, learning from them their history, walking with them to photograph their stories,” he continued. “I began to slow down. I found myself photographing less but reaching for a deeper meaning behind the stories I was trying to document.” Library patrons can learn more about Roye and his process by viewing filmmaker Robert Banks’s film Ruddy 20/20, which plays on a continuous loop in a separate room in Brett Hall. This 15-minute film documents Roye’s process and philosophy surrounding his work in Cleveland, showcases some behind-the-scenes moments from the creation of his photographs, and includes his forthright observations about the city and its residents.
“One of our greatest strengths as an organization is to honor and recognize talent in our community by preserving and displaying their work,” Mason explains, adding that all photographs in the larger Cleveland 20/20 project, including thousands not on display in Brett Hall, will be added to the Library’s Photograph Collection. “The work generated by this project goes hand in hand with the work of other Cleveland Public Library departments, such as the Ohio Center for the Book and the Cleveland Digital Public Library.” “Libraries are a civic commons in the 21st century, and having an art exhibit here gives people the space to consider the culture and to consider change,” Kurzner adds. “In the process, we were able to show off the skills and potential of photographers in the Cleveland community while also giving young people a voice by putting cameras in their hands.” Kurzner is referring to the student photographers invited to participate in Cleveland 20/20 through the Cleveland Print Room’s Teen Institute. Including teen photographers not only helped capture the perspective of the younger generation, but it also provided promising young photographers with valuable experience, skills, encouragement, and validation—in short, to give them a voice.
Showcasing Local Talent
The offerings in Brett Hall express the city’s story not only through images and video, but through oral histories, as well. Four digital kiosks throughout the exhibition display stories from the CPL150 Storytelling Project, a separate initiative led by ideastream to help share Clevelanders’ stories in their own words. At the kiosks, visitors can scroll through stories produced by ideastream featuring local residents. These stories are presented via both video and text and include: an amateur typographer sharing his passion for fonts, a mother and son conversing about the future, a woman reflecting on her community through the lens of her family’s jewelry shop, and more. (Ideastream-produced stories may be viewed online at ideastream.org/stories-from-cleveland.) Kiosks in Brett Hall also include audio files from additional interviews gathered by Library staff. Visitors interested in an interactive experience can share their favorite Cleveland places or neighborhoods by adding a note to a special station set up on the southeast wall in Brett Hall. Finally, racks of complimentary postcards featuring images from the larger Cleveland 20/20 project allow visitors to take a bit of the experience home with them. “There’s so much explore that we hope people come more than once to discover something new and surprising and each time,” Kurzner says.
The Cleveland Print Room recruited nearly two dozen local photographers of varying ages, races, genders, and experience levels to participate in this project. The diversity of participating artists reflects the diversity inherent in the city, resulting in a collection of photographs that portray a nuanced, multifaceted view of Cleveland.

2020 CENSUS: CAN WE COUNT YOU IN? It’s census time! Learn how to be counted and why it matters. BY LAURA WALTER
I
n the span of only ten minutes, you could read a short article, fold a load of clean laundry, do about 500 jumping jacks, or listen to your favorite song several times in a row. Alternatively, in that same brief time frame, you could fulfill your civic duty and ensure your community receives the resources it needs—all by participating in the 2020 Census. “Ten minutes is all it takes from each resident to help guarantee an accurate count of the people living in our region,” says Felton Thomas, Jr., Executive Director of Cleveland Public Library. “And that count is more important than you might think.” Obtaining an accurate count has big implications for individual communities. The data captured by the 2020 Census directly impacts the distribution of federal funds upwards of $800 billion a year allocated for about 300 federal programs and services. When local communities or states don’t produce accurate counts, portions of the funding they need could be directed elsewhere. The census also impacts congressional representation, as the data affects the reapportioning of seats in the House of Representatives. 6
UpNext March–May 2020
“Undercounted communities are disadvantaged economically and politically,” says Robin Wood, Assistant Director of Public Services. “That’s why it’s so important for everyone to participate in the census this year.”
Why Your Count Matters
A 2018 George Washington Institute of Public Policy study, “Counting for Dollars 2020,” breaks down just how much is at stake, financially, when residents aren’t counted in the census. In Ohio, the state lost out on $1,206 annually for every person not counted. (Other estimates place the amount lost as high as $1,800 per person.) That’s a lot of money not helping the people who need it—money you can ensure is directed appropriately to your community simply by participating in the census. Still not convinced? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, census data is used for a wide range of programs, services, and resources, including: designing public safety strategies; distributing medical research; estimating the number of people displaced by natural disasters; designing facilities for the elderly,
children, or people with disabilities; drawing school district boundaries; planning government budgets; planning for public transportation services; establishing fair market rents; assessing the potential for the spread of communicable diseases; providing genealogical research; and much more. Wood, who is spearheading the Library’s efforts to help all local residents participate in the 2020 Census, stresses that advocates are particularly concerned about reaching households considered difficult to count. That includes complex households, blended families, those who don’t speak English fluently, low-income residents, undocumented immigrants, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ residents, and those who are homeless or without internet access. It is important to make sure these individuals are counted, just as everyone else is, in the 2020 Census. Staff at Cleveland Public Library are stepping in to help by raising awareness surrounding the census, combatting myths and false rumors about the census, and offering assistance with the online census questionnaire. The Library also helps bridge the gap for some residents by offering free public access to computers and wifi, not to mention wifi hotspots patrons can check out to access the internet at home. “Our role is to help people fill out the questionnaire and fulfill their civic duty by being counted,” Wood says. “Fortunately, we’re prepared. Our staff already helps patrons apply for SNAP benefits, unemployment, and additional services. Assisting with the 2020 Census is a natural extension of our offerings.” This focus on the census aligns with Cleveland Public Library's yearlong Democracy 20/20 theme. For more information, please view the important dates found on this page as well as additional facts on page 8.
Census Timeline
Everyone is tasked with participating in the 2020 Census by July 31, 2020, but we strongly recommend completing it as soon as possible. Don’t wait for census staff to come knocking (literally) to follow up with you or your family—instead, fill out your census information online or by phone ASAP. Here’s a breakdown of the census timeline: March 12, 2020: Invitations to respond to the 2020 Census online or by phone are sent to home addresses. April 1, 2020: Census Day is observed nationwide. By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the census. April 8, 2020: Reminder letters, including a paper census questionnaire, are mailed out. April 20, 2020: Final reminder postcards are sent before in-person follow-ups begin. July 31, 2020: Last day to complete the electronic census form. We strongly recommend completing the census early. Not only can you rest easy knowing you’ve done your civic duty, but you also won’t be pestered to fill it out in the coming months. Visit any Cleveland Public Library location for assistance.

Per the U.S. Constitution, the census will count every person living in the country, regardless of citizenship status. Fiction: “The 2020 Census doesn’t affect me, and it won’t do any good for me to complete it.” Fact: A wide range of programs are impacted by census data, including Medicaid, Medicare Part B, SNAP, Head Start, foster care, road and bridge construction, special education grants, and more. See the section “Why Your Count Matters” on page 6 to learn more. Fiction: “I have to fill out the census by mail or wait for someone to come to my door.” Fact: In 2020, for the first time, the U.S. Census can be completed online. The census can also be completed by phone or by mail. Visit any Cleveland Public Library branch (or check out the open houses listed on the right) for assistance in completing the census online. Fiction: “I’m on my own when it comes to filling out the census information.” Fact: Cleveland Public Library is here to help! Robin Wood explains: “The Library is working with community organizations, neighborhood development organizations, church groups, and other libraries across the country to get the word out about the U.S. Census, which can vastly affect Cleveland residents and communities. If any patrons or community members have questions or concerns about the census, please stop by one of our libraries and ask. We’re here to help.”
